Khan-Barrera headlines Mar. 14 PPV show also featuring Cook-Martinez title fight

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 4, 2009) – Former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli has been working on a unique training method for his March 14th WBO cruiserweight title fight against NABO title-holder Ola “Kryptonite” Afolabi, headlined by the showdown between 22-year-old lightweight prospect Amir Khan and Hall of Fame bound multiple world champion, “The Baby Faced Assassin” Marco Antonio Barrera, on pay-per-view love from The M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom.

WBO No. 1 contender Maccarinelli (29-2, 22 KOs) recently revealed his secret for his clash with No. 2 rated Afolabi (13-1-3, 5 KOs), who now has famed trainer Freddie Roach working his corner, for their vacant WBO cruiserweight championship bout – a dozen beer barrels. The Welshman has been lifting, not draining, them to improve his strength and conditioning.

Integrated Sports is distributing three 12-round championship bouts featured on the “Khan-Barrera” pay-per-view card, presented by Frank Warren, in North America for live viewing at 4 PM/ET – 1 PM/PT on cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, DirecTV and Dish Network in the United States, as well as Viewer’s Choice, Shaw Cable, Star Choice and Bell TV in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. Veteran blow-by-blow announcer Ian Darke and color analyst, former WBC lightweight champion Jim Watt, will be calling the action from ringside for Sky Box Office and Integrated Sports PPV.

The Ring No. 6 rated Maccarinelli balances half-full kegs over his head to increase his core muscle power, in addition to beating car tires with a sledgehammer. “I’ve tried lifting weights before but it’s not really my kind of thing,” Mazzarinelli explained. “So, when a pal of mine suggested something a bit different, I jumped at the chance. It’s a bit tempting to crack open one of the barrels after a hard day’s training, but I’ll leave that until after the fight.

“I’m desperate to get in the ring and take out all my frustrations on Afolabi. 2008 was a bit of a disaster after I lost to David Haye and then couldn’t win back my WBO title. But 2009 is going to be my time. I hear that Afolabi is a bit of a nightmare and dangerous, but that’s just what I wanted. I want to face the best and beat the best, so as far as I’m concerned, bring on the 14th. I am going to unleash hell once I get between those ropes.”

The 12-round main event finds Khan (19-1, 15 KOs), 2004 Olympic silver medallist, defending his WBA International lightweight crown against WBO No. 1 ranked Barrera (65-6, 43 KOs).

In addition to Khan-Barrera and Maccarinelli-Afolabi, another terrific fight will be shown on PPV as WBO super middleweight champion Nicky “Cookie” Cook (29-1, 16 KOs) defends his title belt against undefeated No. 1 contender Roman “Rocky” Martinez (21-0-1, 12 KOs).

As much as any sport, mixed martial arts fans have a high rate of participation in the martial arts that make up the sport they love to watch. Most will never rise to the level of their favorite fighters, but many still want to take part in the same training as the fighters they follow.

Knee injury puts UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon into submission until 2010

E. BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (March 4, 2009) – UFC lightweight prospect Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon (18-4, 5 KOs, 13 submissions) will undergo knee surgery this Friday, sidelining the 24-year-old Brazilian Jui-Jitsu specialist until next year, at Sullivan Orthopedic Care.

Lauzon has had problems in the past including arthroscopic surgery on the meniscectomies of both knees. This time, however, Lauzon needs ACL surgery on his right knee, in addition to having his meniscus repaired.

The ACL caused Joe’s knee to slightly shift, effectively destroying his meniscus. “The doctor could stop operating after repairing the meniscus,” Lauzon explained, “but it would just happen again. ACL surgery should fix it, but I’m in for a very long rehab, and my knee may never be the same again.”

Lauzon, star of The Ultimate Fighter 5 television reality show, will be off of his feet for a month to a month-and-a-half. He will not be allowed to do even the simplest training for 4-5 months, more intense in nine months, and projected back fighting between 12-14 months.

“Every time you fight,” Joe added, “you are taking a gamble with your body. During my fight with Jeremy Stephens, I didn’t notice it so much during my fight, but afterwards I was limping pretty good. I chalked it up to normal soreness and took a week off training because of the stitches in my head. When I tried to go back to training, just warming-up, my knee locked-up and I couldn’t move it at all. An x-ray and MRI later revealed I had a badly torn meniscus and a likely torn ACL. I go this Friday for very serious surgery and then I face a long rehab. I am super confident, though, that I will return better than ever. I’m only 24 and have a lot more to accomplish in this sport. This is just a bump in the road.”

Babe Wood to be posthumously inducted into CES Ring of Honor

PROVIDENCE (March 3, 2009) – The late Charles “Babe” Wood will be posthumously inducted into the CES Ring of Honor during a special ceremony Friday night (March 6) at “Mayflower Madness,” promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., in historic Plymouth Memorial Hall.

“Mayflower Madness” is the first in a 4-fight arrangement, “The Radisson Hotel Plymouth Harbor Fight Series,” scheduled in 2009 at Plymouth Memorial Hall and promoted by CES.

Promoter Jimmy Burchfield, president of CES, established the CES Ring of Honor in 2005 to honor inductees for their special accomplishments and contributions to New England boxing. During a blistering two-day U.K. media tour, superstars Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Ricky “Hitman” Hatton set the tone for their world junior welterweight “The Battle of East and West” championship set for Saturday, May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and broadcast live on HBO Pay-Per-View. The fighters started in Hatton’s hometown of Manchester and finished yesterday in London. They were joined by their respective trainers Freddie Roach and Floyd Mayweather, Sr, as well as US-based promoters Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer. RICKY HATTON

“I appreciate Manny traveling all of this way to come to England and especially Manchester to help promote this fight. He’s a great fighter and I am looking forward to the challenge.

“This is a fight between two nice men, but there is nothing nice about either me or Manny when we get inside the ring.

“I’m in fantastic condition already. That just shows how much I’m up for this fight.

“Manny shuffles in and out and tries to bring you onto the punch. I have good footwork and I think I can bring him on to my shots.

“Sometimes he comes in square and goes for broke which leaves him open to be hit. If he leaves himself open there is no reason why I shouldn’t be confident.

“Manny has been floored by body shots and might be vulnerable there. Two of the big keys will be my size and strength.

“He did beat Oscar who is bigger than me, but he had nothing that night. If I had boxed Oscar then I would have beat him even quicker.

“We both have great fans and we will be fighting our hearts out for them that night. I want to do the U.K. proud and come home victorious.”

MANNY PACQUIAO

Note: This was a first time visit for Pacquiao to the U.K. and he was quite excited to be visiting the country. Thinking he was coming into the opponent’s territory, Pacquiao was very surprised to see his Filipino people every place he went during his stay. Inasmuch as the Manchester press conference was open to the public, literally thousands of Filipinos came early to wait for their native son, who is easily the most popular figure in his country today. They gave Hatton’s hometown fans a run for their money and Pacquiao was overwhelmed by the support. The same phenomenon occurred in London, when Pacquiao attended Sunday Mass at Westminister Cathedral, a community event the same day, and a visit to the Philippines Embassy immediately following the press conference.

“This is my first time in England. I am very surprised and overwhelmed by the turnout of all of the Filipino people. I would like to thank everyone for turning out.

“I was surprised to see so many of my people in Manchester. I think Ricky Hatton was surprised to see them too. Although it is Hatton’s place, I think Manchester is now ‘Mannychester!’

“The fight will be a great challenge because Ricky is a great fighter. It will be a once in a lifetime fight, the kind you only see once in boxing history.

“This is a smart match. For Ricky and me because of our styles. He is smart and strong too.

“I know what Ricky’s weaknesses are and I have begun to train for them. His strength is his left uppercut, but I can handle that, too.

“Hatton hits very hard, has a strong left hand and a good uppercut too. I must and will train very hard.

“My trainer Freddie Roach is my best friend.

“I feel strong at 140, 145, 147. The weight is fine for me.

“Hatton is bigger than I am but this isn’t about big. It’s about punching hard and being effective.

“There is a respect for Hatton and his team but in the ring it is all different. There are no timeouts.

“Like all of my fights, I dedicate this fight to my country. I remember as a little boy. I ate one meal a day and sometimes slept in the street. I will never forget that and it inspires me to fight hard, stay strong and remember all of the people of my country trying to achieve better for themselves.
