BALTIMORE, MD, (February 28, 2009) Scott Wagner’s Ballroom Boxing and Chet Koerner’s TKO BOXING Promotions, have teamed up for 2009 to present six world class professional boxing events this year at Baltimore’s Michael’s Eighth Avenue as part of the nationally known “HOMETOWN HEROES TO WORLD CHAMPIONS” series.

Ballroom Boxing is one of the longest running professional boxing series in North America . The upcoming card on April 2nd will be its 93rd spanning thirteen years. Scott Wagner has created and masterminded the highly successful series since its first show on February 15, 1996.

Said Wagner “We have three exciting shows planned for this spring and if all goes according to plan Ballroom Boxing and TKO Boxing Promotions will really make its mark in this area at the same time as it establishes itself as one of the home bases for TKO.”

Ballroom Boxing has featured world champions Hasim Rahman, Kermit Cintron, Nate Campbell, Wayne Braithwaite, Vincent Pettway, Luis Collazo and has been an important part of the development of local standouts Lamont Pearson, heavyweight Tony Thompson, Darnell “The Ding A Ling Man” Wilson, and Teddy Reid, as well as featuring rising stars on their way up such as Yuri Foreman, Mike Arnaoutis, Mario Santiago, Roman Martinez and Andre Dirrell.

Ballroom Boxing and TKO Boxing Promotions first worked together on the annual Jonathan Ogden Foundation benefit boxing show this past October 30th and followed that up with an outstanding card on November 20th at Michael’s Eighth Avenue with the relationship now turning into a strategic alliance. The promoters will work together to continue to showcase the best area talent in the context of the world class professional fighters that are being promoted by TKO.

Through the years, Wagner and Ballroom Boxing have stayed away from signing fighters. Scott Wagner realized early on that if he signed a fighter and they developed into a world class prospect that in order to take the fighter to the next level that he would have to sign the fighter over to a promoter with national visibility.

Said Wagner “With this strategic alliance with TKO, I can now sign a fighter, develop him together with TKO, and if he really becomes a top pro, with TKO’s cross country reach, we can promote him nationally. Long time matchmaker for Ballroom Boxing, Chris Middendorf, is also a partner and the matchmaker for TKO. “Chris knows how the shows work here and what sort of quality that our fans demand. With him already working for both Ballroom and TKO, this will be a seamless transition” continued Wagner.

Scott Wagner has been spearheading the drive in Maryland to include MMA, which passed and went into law in January. Wagner has also planned an ambitious schedule of MMA fights this year under the name Ballroom Battlefield.

THOMSON-MELENDEZ CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH SET FOR APRIL 11TH

STRIKEFORCE Lightweight Title Fight Precedes Shamrock vs. Diaz Main Event;

NEW YORK (Feb. 27, 2009) — Strikeforce World Lightweight Champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson (16-2) and top challenger “El Nino” Gilbert Melendez (14-2) will revisit their classic, five-round battle when they collide in a rematch for the coveted 155-pound title at Strikeforce: “Shamrock vs. Diaz” mixed martial arts (MMA) event at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion on Saturday, April 11th live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

The championship bout will be the 30-year-old Thomson’s first defense of the Strikeforce (MMA) belt and an opportunity to extend his win streak to nine consecutive fights.

In their first encounter, a fight that many critics hailed as “Fight of the Year,” Thomson continually beat Melendez to the punch en route to earning the unanimous decision win at the HP Pavilion on June 27, 2008. With the victory, Thomson regained his footing amongst the world’s top-10 competitors in the sport’s 155-pound division.

The showdown between Thomson and Melendez, former training partners who hail from neighboring cities in California’s Bay Area, had been brewing for months as both fighters continued to climb the ranks in the division.

The defeat marked Melendez’s first in the Strikeforce cage. The 26 year-old had previously been on fire, winning all four of his Strikeforce starts, including a meeting with Japan’s Tetsuji Kato in the main event of the first-ever MMA affair at the world-famous Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif., on September 29, 2007.

On April 11, Melendez gets his chance at redemption.

Ironically, Thomson’s sole defeat in Strikeforce competition came at the hands of Clay “The Carpenter” Guida, the former junior collegiate wrestling star and first Strikeforce lightweight champion in history. Previously, Melendez had dominated Guida with superior striking to capture the Strikeforce title at the HP Pavilion on June 9, 2006.

The event represents the dawn of a new age for Strikeforce as it will be the first one under its new television agreement with Showtime Networks Inc. The live telecast will feature up to five fights including a thrilling main event between three-time world champion and MMA legend Frank Shamrock (24-9-1) and fellow knockout artist Nick Diaz (18-7, 1 NC) contested at a catch weight of 179 pounds.

Middleweight (185-pound limit) sluggers Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith (16-5, 1 NC) and Benji “Razor” Radach (19-4) will also meet in a featured contest.

Philadelphia’s future world champion ready for step-up battle

PHILADELPHIA (MARCH 2, 2009)—On Friday night, March 6th, another in the long line of great fighters from Philadelphia will be unleashed on the world as nineteen year-old wunderkind, Raymond “Tito” Serrano will look to keep his impressive undefeated record in-tact as he takes on Jay Krupp as the co-feature on a nationally televised show that will emanate from the Mohegan Sun & Resort in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Serrano of North Philadelphia has built up an 8-0 record with five big wins coming by knockout.

Serrano has been preparing for this fight with some intense sparring with some of the best welterweights in the world.

“I was in camp with Delvin Rodriguez (who will be fighting Shamone Alvarez in the main event on March 6th) and I have been working with Mike Jones”, said Serrano

“I am excited to be the co-main event on ESPN 2 as it’s a great opportunity to showcase my skills to the world. I have a great team around me and I have to thank my promoter, Joe DeGuardia for this great opportunity for everyone to see me.”

Serrano has one of the best young trainer’s in former Philadelphia bantamweight, Danny Davis and the trainer sees his pupil on the fast track.

“I see the progress. He is turning into a complete fighter and he is just nineteen tears old.” said Davis

“He has a great promoter in Joe DeGuardia and he is moving him well. All Raymond has to do is train and stay focused and he will be a fighter that people will have to watch out for.”

DeGuardia, who is one of the better promoters and is a former fighter himself sees a lot of promise for the young Serrano.

It will be a night of firsts for Raymond (first eight rounder, first nationally televised co-feature) against perhaps his toughest opponent to date. Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham Praises Tomasz Adamek’s Knockout Victory

Philadelphia, PA. USA – 2nd March 2009

Former IBF Champion, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham was ringside at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Friday night supporting his former foe, current champ, Tomasz ‘Goral’ Adamek, when he faced Kronk fighter Johnathon Banks from Detroit in the first defense of the IBF title.

Adamek secured the IBF and Ring Magazine Cruiserweight World titles on December 11th ‘08 with a close split-decision win over the then champion, ‘USS’ Cunningham, in one of the greatest Cruiserweight battles of all time. The fight had it all, spectacular non-stop action, drama and three knockdowns and was rightly nominated as “Fight of the Year” candidate.

‘USS’ Cunningham, who later this year is to face former WBC title holder, Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite, in an IBF title eliminator to earn the rematch with Adamek he so eagerly desires, was just as fanatical in his support for the Champion as were the Polish fans that packed the arena.

After Adamek successfully defended his title by knocking his previously unbeaten opponent out in the eighth round, ‘USS’ Cunningham, still clutching the Polish flag which he waved enthusiastically throughout the fight, said. “It was a very good win for Adamek. Banks was doing good the first four rounds, then he shut down in the fifth and Adamek stepped up and got him out of there.

Polish fans are awesome, it was a great crowd.

I want the rematch more than any other fight out there, so I’m going to do what I have to do to get it. And that is to fight and beat Braithwaite.”

On the subject of the desired rematch, it was recently announced that the Adamek-Cunningham II campaign website – www.wewantarematch.com – has broken the 250,000 visitors milestone since it’s inception just two months ago.

Don King Productions are expected to announce the date and venue for Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham vs. Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite in the very near future.

Ricky Hatton does not take on Manny Pacquiao until 2 May but, somewhat ominously for the Mancunian, round one in the build-up to what could be the defining fight of his career has gone to his opponent. The pair faced the public at the Trafford Centre in Manchester yesterday in an event designed to give Hatton momentum ahead of the Las Vegas showdown, but instead it was Pacquiao who arrived and departed to the more thunderous roars of approval.

There are some 200,000 Filipinos living in the United Kingdom and it felt as if the majority of them were in attendance to see the first appearance on these shores of the man widely regarded as being the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. They sung Pacquiao’s name, cheered whenever a clip appeared on the large-screen television showing the 30-year-old pounding one of the 53 opponents he has faced in his career and held aloft banners proclaiming their love for the man who, in December, brutally ended the career of Oscar De La Hoya. Never have Hatton’s band of supporters been so overwhelmed.

“I am amazed by the support I have been shown,” a beaming Pacquiao said. “I did not expect it because this is Ricky’s home town, where I know he is loved. I appreciate my supporters coming to see me.”

There were cheers for Hatton, too, but he was the first to admit that the afternoon belonged to Pacquiao, who last year named his daughter Queen Elizabeth in tribute to the monarch. The two fighters met later in the day at the New Inn pub in Hyde for a game of darts (both are apparently mean competitors at the oche) and will do so again in London tomorrow for a press conference, as the build-up for what could well be the most eye-catching bout of 2009 grows.

Hatton has got to this stage courtesy of his impressive 11th-round stoppage of Paulie Malignaggi in November, a performance that enabled him to speak confidently yesterday of overcoming Pacquiao on his return to the MGM Grand. “Manny will cause me problems with his speed, but I was pretty fast myself in my last fight [against Malignaggi] and with another training camp under my belt I’ll be even quicker,” he said. “I truly feel I’ve got an answer for everything and that the Ricky Hatton in this fight will prove to be better than the Ricky Hatton that beat Kostya Tszyu four years ago.” Such confidence could be deemed naive were it not for Hatton’s early preparation for what will be his second and probably last chance to be hailed the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter, having failed the first time around against Floyd Mayweather Jr 15 months ago. He is already three weeks into training with his coaches, Floyd Mayweather Sr and Lee Baird, and will depart for Las Vegas five weeks before facing Pacquiao, giving him an extra fortnight of preparation.

“I’m in fantastic condition already,” said Hatton, noticeably slimmer than he normally is at this stage. “That just shows how much I’m up for this fight. ”

Hatton pointed out that, the last time Pacquiao faced the type of front-foot pressure he plans to exert, against Erik Morales in March 2005, he lost. What is undeniable is that the “Pacman” has improved since then, culminating in his trio of wins across three different weight divisions last year, the last of which saw De La Hoya demoralised across eight rounds. Nigel Collins, the editor of Ring magazine, later described the man from General Santos City as a “package of mayhem that guarantees violence every time he fights”, and it is why he and many other observers expect him to overcome Hatton.

“I know what Ricky’s weaknesses are and I have trained for them,” said Pacquiao. “His strength is his left uppercut, but I can handle that, too.” The world and fervent supporters wait to see if that is the case.

Philadelphia’s undefeated Jr Welterweight prospect, Danny “Swift” Garcia, improves to (11-0, 7 KO’s) with a dominating performance against crafty veteran Cristian Favela, now (17-19-6, 10 KO’s).

In the early rounds, Garcia pressed the action, landing accurate jabs, followed by some impressive counter punching that appeared to dishearten the will of his opponent. As the fight went on, Danny let his hands go, throwing more and more power shots. Favela used his veteran experience and held, while momentum continued to mound for Garcia. Favela survived, taking Garcia the distance for the forth time in his career. Scorecards read 80-72 twice and 79-73.

“This fight was good for me in the sense that I got in some rounds and gained more experience,” said Garcia. “I’m looking to get right back in the ring and continue my march toward title contention.”
