FEDOR EXCLUSIVE AS PREPARATIONS CONTINUE FOR AFFLICTION M-1 “DAY OF RECKONING” ON JANUARY 24 AT HONDA CENTER IN ANAHEIM, CA AND LIVE ON PAY-PER-VIEW

STARY OSKOL, RUSSIA (Wednesday, January 7). There are just 17 days until Fedor Emelianenko defends his WAMMA heavyweight title against former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski during Affliction M-1″Day of Reckoning” on January 24 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and live on Pay-Per-View.

Despite having recorded victories in the past over the likes for former PRIDE and interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Arlovski could pose Fedor’s toughest test to date.

Fedor has recently had verbal salvos fired at him by both Arlovski and his boxing trainer Freddie Roach. Despite being secluded for his training camp in his Russian home city of Stary Oskol — a small town in which cell phone connectivity is spotty at best and Internet access is almost non-existent — Emelianenko heard the comments and elected to respond through an exclusive interview he had with FiveOuncesOfPain.com. In addition to those responses, Fedor shares other thoughts on his career and training. Here, then, are his responses.

Question: You train in your home town of Stary Oskol, which is very isolated from the rest of the world. With so many world class camps that now have some many top coaches and training partners, why do you choose to keep things simple?

Fedor: MY TRAINING IS NOT SIMPLE. I BELIEVE I TRAIN HARDER THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD. AND THE STRENGTH AND POWER I OBTAIN CAN ONLY BE HERE IN RUSSIA. I FEED OFF MY SURROUNDINGS AND I DO NOT BELIEVE I WOULD BE AS PREPARED IF I TRAINED SOMEWHERE ELSE. I LIKE TO HAVE EVERYTHING I LOVE AROUND ME WHEN I TRAIN.

Question: During a recent press conference to promote “Day of Reckoning,” Andrei Arlovski questioned the sincerity of a statement you made last month regarding your loss at the Combat Sambo Championships. His exact quote was the following:

“After his loss in the Sambo tournament, I think he’s messed up a little bit. He says it’s not important, but c’mon, let’s be serious. He was unbeatable, like, five years, six years in Sambo, and he’s not beatable in MMA. When you lose something, of course it’s important. For me, it’s really hard to believe that he doesn’t care about it. Of course he cares. Now I don’t think he is 100 percent sure of himself.”

Fedor: MAYBE ANDREI IS TRYING TO CONVINCE HIMSELF THAT I HAVE BEEN WEAKENED IN SOME WAY. BUT IT IS NO MATTER. WE ARE NOT FIGHTING SAMBO WITH ANDREI. THE ONLY 100% I AM SURE ABOUT IS THAT I WILL BE 100% READY TO FIGHT MMA AGAINST ANDREI. AND THAT IS THE ONLY THING I CARE ABOUT RIGHT NOW.

Question: One of Arlovski’s trainers, famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach, questioned some aspects of your standup from a technical boxing perspective, most notably your footwork. Do you feel Roach’s criticisms are relevant to MMA?

Fedor: THE BEAUTY ABOUT MMA IS THAT EVERY FIGHTER HAS HIS OWN UNIQUE STYLE AND PREFERENCES. BUT IT IS NOT A BEAUTY CONTEST. WE FIGHT TO SEE WHICH FIGHTER’S APPROACH PREVAILS. BUT AGAIN, WE ARE NOT BOXING AND WE ARE NOT FIGHTING SAMBO. WE FIGHT MMA.

Question: How do you feel about an opponent’s trainer picking a part your stand-up like that?

Fedor: SOMETIMES IT IS A TRAINER’S JOB TO POINT OUT WEAKNESSES IN HIS FIGHTER’S OPPONENTS. AND SOMETIMES IT IS A TRAINER’S JOB TO CONVINCE HIS FIGHTER THAT HIS OPPONENT HAS WEAKNESSES. WE WILL SEE.

Question: If you are able to defeat Arlovski, it’s been said your next fight could come against the winner of the Barnett vs. Yvel fight. It’s also been said that you are friends with Barnett. You said you weren’t looking forward to fight Couture because he’s a friend, so how do you feel about the possibility of facing him?

Fedor: YES, JOSH AND I ARE FRIENDS. BUT ONCE AGAIN, THE BEST SHOULD FIGHT THE BEST FOR THE SPORT OF MMA. IT WOULD BE OK.

Question: Your protégé, Kirill “Baby Fedor” Sidelnikov will also be competing at “Day of Reckoning.” At only 20-years of age, do you think he’s ready for such a high-profile match against a seasoned veteran such as Paul Buentello?

Fedor: KIRILL HAS IMPROVED GREATLY WITH HIS FIGHTS IN THE M-1 CHALLENGE AND HELPED OUR RED DEVIL TEAM REACH THE WORLD FINALS. I THINK BUENTELLO IS A OOD TEST FOR KIRILL BUT I KNOW KIRILL IS READY.

Question: During some recent interviews you revealed that you weren’t looking forward to a possible fight vs. Couture because he’s a friend. But if he were suddenly to become a free agent, would you refuse the fight?

Fedor: I WOULD NOT REFUSE THE FIGHT BECAUSE I BELIEVE RANDY AND I ARE BOTH AMBASSADORS FOR THE SPORT OF MMA AND WE WOULD HELP GROW THE SPORT VERY MUCH WITH THE FIGHT. THIS WAS THE MAIN REASON WHY I WANTED TO FIGHT RANDY, EVEN IF IT MEANT TO FIGHT SOMEONE I ADMIRED.

Question: M-1 USA Vice President Jerry Millen made the statement that in a fight with Brock Lesnar, he would not make it past the first round against you. Do you agree with that assessment?

Fedor: I DO NOT LIKE TO MAKE PREDICTIONS. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN A RING. LESNER HAS SOME NATURAL TALENT. IT WOULD BE AN INTERESTING FIGHT FOR FANS TO SEE.

Question: There have also been questions raised about how much control you have over your career. Could you set the record straight and comment as to who has the final say in regard to who has final say: you or your management?

Fedor: IT DEPENDS ON THE DECISIONS. I AM NOT A SPECIALIST IN SOME THINGS. SOMETIMES I MAKE THE DECISIONS AND SOMETIMES WE MAKE THEM TOGETHER. IF I STOP FIGHTING TOMORROW, I STOP. IF I WANT TO FIGHT SAMBO, I FIGHT. IF I NEED TO FINISH MY TRAINING CAMP AND MISS A PRESS CONFERENCE, I NEED TO. BUT I AM LUCKY TO HAVE GOOD MANAGEMENT AND MY TEAM, M-1 GLOBAL. I AM PART OF M-1 GLOBAL SO IT IS EASY TO MAKE DECISIONS TOGETHER.

Question: Ideally, how many times would you like to fight in 2009?

Fedor: GOD WILLING, IT WILL BE NICE TO FIGHT 3 TIMES IN 2009 AND HAVE ONE MORE FIGHT NEW YEARS EVE.

TIJUANA NATIVE ANTONIO DUARTE TO FACE OFF AGAINST AMERICAN-BORN ALBERT RIOS FOR BRAGGING RIGHTS IN MEXICO

Seal Beach, CA (January 7, 2009)-On January 24, MMA Champion Albert Rios will face Tijuana native and the number-one ranked fighter in Mexico, Antonio Duarte at Affliction M-1 “Day Of Reckoning” at Honda Center in Anaheim, California. This is the second mixed martial arts event for Affliction Entertainment, following the incredible success of their debut MMA event, “Affliction Banned” In July of 2008. The Rios vs. Duarte bout, along with four other “Day of Reckoning” undercard fights, will air live on HDNet, prior to the start of the Pay-Per-View telecast which will feature six other fights, including the main event bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski.

“I’m the current champion in Mexico and Antonio is currently ranked number one, so it’s going to be a battle between two great Mexican fighters,” said Rios. “We were scheduled to fight in July and it was supposed to be a big event in Mexico, but now we have a bigger stage with there is a whole lot on the line. This is a big opportunity for both of us, as well as a chance for Mexico to put a stamp on the sport.”

“I feel we are very evenly matched and our styles will make for a very technical and exciting fight. We are both very aggressive and always show up in top form,” said Duarte. “I expect Rios to be at his best, as I will be, because this the most important fight in our careers. My strategy is to show up in the best condition of my life, physically and mentally, in order to give fight fans around the world, and particularly from Mexico, a great show.”

The Rios and Duarte match has been long in the making, as a previous bout between the two, originally scheduled to take place in Tijuana in July, was cancelled. Now the fight will happen on the Affliction M-1 “Day Of Reckoning” undercard, giving fight fans an opportunity to see two of the very best 145-pound fighters in the sport.

“We are extremely pleased to be hosting our second Affliction Entertainment MMA fight card, which will bring a wide variety of fighters and weight classes,” said Tom Atencio, Vice President of Affliction Entertainment. “While our first event was packed with heavyweights, I’m a huge fan of the light weight division, which often delivers a more technical and exciting fight. I’m particularly looking forward to the Rios and Duarte match, as they are the top two rated Mexican fighters in the sport today and should deliver some fireworks for Mexican and MMA fight fans.”

Although Duarte and Rios share a rich Mexican heritage and each have dreams of emerging victorious on January 24, they currently lead two very different lives.

Rios, a Los Angeles native, leads a very tangled double life. A special needs educator by profession, he splits his time between his MMA training and his Los Angeles Unified School District classroom, where he teaches students from pre-school all the way up to high school. Interestingly, Rios says his two life tracks don’t mesh, as his colleagues and even his family are unaware that his MMA training is more than just a “hobby.” Rios fears that fighting in MMA fights would be a “slap in the face” to his mother, who kept the family together after his parents divorced when he was in high school, and always told him that he needed to graduate from college and get a good job.

“I tell my colleagues that I train after school and that I love boxing, but they think it’s a hobby. My mom thinks it’s a hobby too. She thinks I should focus on my career,” said Rios. “I ran into a weird situation for my last fight in Mexico, because I have a lot of family in Mexico and I was all over the local news. My family called my mom about it, and I just told her it was a small fight and it wasn’t a big deal. She did so much, working three jobs just to put me in college. I don’t want her to think it was a waste.”

Rios first began his training in mixed martial arts in high school. One day after school, his friend Savant Young (who fought on the July 19th “Affliction Banned” show) finally him to come over to his house to train. Rios remembers, “He used to beat me up every day. We trained in his garage, on a small mat laid down on concrete with one heavy bag in the corner. It was raw.”

After a year and half of training, Rios had his first fight. Competing behind gyms and in fight clubs, Rios earned $50 a fight and $50 more if he won. “I remember one fight I broke my thumb. I made $100 and it cost me $90 for the cast. All I made was $10, but I was so happy because I won.”

For Rios, who currently trains in Long Beach, there will be added pressure on January 24 when he faces Duarte, because of his Duarte’s family’s heritage and ties to Tijuana. He also knows that come fight night the Mexican crowd will be cheering for his opponent.

“I am prepared for the Mexican fans to root against me,” said Rios. “When Oscar de la Hoya fought Julio Cesar Chavez, it didn’t matter to the crowd that De La Hoya’s family is from Mexico. They rooted for Chavez because he was representing Mexico. On January 24th, the whole crowd will be for Duarte…he’s going to have all of the Mexicans behind him.”

For Antonio Duarte, who grew up idolizing Julio Cesar Chavez, it will be his first fight outside of Mexico and the biggest showcase of his talents in his career. He will also be the first Mexican fighter fully-trained in Mexico to fight on the international stage. For the Tijuana-born fighter, the chance to come to the United States and show his skills and fighting capabilities to the world is a dream come true.

Duarte, originally from Zamora, Michoacan moved when he was 10-years-old to Tijuana, a city famous for producing great fighters, such as Erik “El Terrible” Morales and his brother Diego “Pelucho” Morales, as well as current world champion Antonio Margarito. At the age of 15, Duarte began to study Karate. Later, under the direction of Raul Arvizu, owner and head coach of Entram Academy, he began an intense MMA program which included grappling, Muay Thai and kickboxing.

After one year of training, Duarte made his MMA professional debut and has since garnered an impressive 10-1 record. Today Duarte is recognized as the lightweight champion of Ultimate Challenge Mexico and was awarded Fighter of the Year in 2007 by the Tijuana Athletic Commission, the sole authority officially sanctioning MMA bouts in Mexico.

“I feel that I have a great responsibility representing Mexico and its MMA fighters in this event and I will do so with great heart and pride,” said Duarte. “The winner of this fight will have greater opportunities and I intend to create a better future for me, as well as for other Mexican fighters…The fact that Rios is Mexican by blood means nothing to me other than he has that warrior spirit in him which characterizes us Mexican fighters. I anticipate a very tough fight.”

Regardless of backgrounds, both Rios and Duarte understand the opportunity to showcase the talent of Mexican fighters to the world on January 24, and a win by either fighter will propel them onto the world stage.

“The Hispanic population is just getting into MMA,” said Rios. “A lot of gyms in the U.S. and in Mexico are beginning to train Jiu-Jitsu and other skills used by MMA fighters and in the future there are going to be a lot of Hispanic fighters in this sport. January 24th is a big platform to show just how far Mexican MMA fighters have come.”

Lauzon headlines “UFC Fight Night” Feb. 7 vs. Franca on national television

E. BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (January 5, 2009) – UFC lightweight sensation Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon fights once again in the main event February 7, headlining “UFC Fight Night” on Spike TV against fellow Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Hermes Franca, live from the Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida.

Lauzon (17-4, 5 KOs, 12 submissions), star of The Ultimate Fighter 5 television reality show, last headlined April 2, 2008 Joe in disappointing loss by second-round TKO to fellow Massachusetts fighter Kenny Florian on UFC Fight Night 13 in Denver. “J-Lau” bounced right back this past September, registering an impressive second-round stoppage of Kyle Bradley (13-6) on UFC Fight Night 15 in Omaha, Nebraska.

“It’s kind of weird,” Lauzon said, “but I’ve gone from undercard to main event, back to undercard, and now main event again. I’m not complaining at all. This is a huge fight for me, second only to my main event in Denver, which was more personal with both of us (Lauzon and Florian) from Massachusetts.”

Former UFC lightweight title challenger Franca (20-7), fighting out of Juniper, Florida by way of his native Brazil, is a former WEC and AFC champion. His most notable victories to date include a knockout of former UFC lightweight title challenger Caol Uno five years ago and third round submission (arm-bar) Jamie Varner in 2006. In his UFC championship fight in 2007 against Sean Sherk, Franca lost a 5-round decision on UFC 73 – Stacked. In his last action (July 19, 2008), Hermes won a 3-round decision versus Frankie Edgar on UFC Fight Night 14.

“This fight will be different than the one against Florian,” Lauzon promised. “I’m going to push the pace, be more aggressive. He’s a counter-puncher who likes his opponents to come to him. He’s a good defensive fighter, very good in every way. We’re both dangerous. It’s going to be fast-paced, a real dog fight.”

In addition to starring on The Ultimate Fighter 5, Lauzon caught the attention of MMA fans around the world, when as a 7-1 underdog in his UFC debut (September 23, 2006 in UFC 63), he shockingly stopped former UFC champion Jens “Little Evil” Pulver (21-7-1) at 43 seconds of the opening round.

In the co-feature, Jr. Welterweight Steve Upsher Chambers will look to extend his unbeaten streak to seventeen as he will take part in a bout scheduled for eight rounds.

Chambers is coming off a solid victory over Ben Ankrah on December 5th at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

In that bout, Chambers showed that despite his long length, he could mix it up inside as he consistently outworked Ankrah at close-quarters to pound out the unanimous decision victory.

Chambers, 19-1-1 (1NC) with five knockouts has become a staple at The Legendary Blue Horizon has fought all but one of his fights at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

It has been fourteen months since Elad Shmouel took part on one of the greatest toe-to-toe wars ever inside the confines of Philadelphia and on February 6th; Shmouel will make his long awaited return to the ring

Back on December 7th, 2007, Shmouel and Lenny DeVictoria put on one of the greatest shows in the history of Philadelphia boxing as Shmouel battered and dropped DeVictoria over the first four rounds. It was then where DeVictoria found something deep inside of him and the tide turned as DeVictoria shockingly came back to stop Shmouel in round seven of what Philadelphia fight fans are still calling a classic.

Shmouel, 18-2-1 of Tel Aviv, Israel with nine knockouts has been thinking about that fight for over a year and there have been rumors of a rematch taking place in 2009. Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham – Wants His Cruiserweight Crown Back – Returns To Training

Former IBF cruiserweight champion, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, has returned to training at the James Shuler Memorial Gym in West Philadelphia just three weeks after losing his crown by close split-decision to Tomasz ‘Goral’ Adamek in what most media and fans alike described as one of the Fights Of The Year at the Prudential Center in Newark New Jersey on December 11th, 2008.

After chatting with ‘early bird’ gym mates, Gee Culmer, Darren Fallen and Marianne “Golden Girl” Marston, about the fight Steve got down to business. After his normal warm-up, Steve went straight into a full work-out session.

Ever willing to pass on his knowledge and experience to fellow fighters, Steve then spent a little time advising British featherweight, Marianne Marston, on reflex bag techniques. After which he took a little time to talk about his return to training. “It feels real good, I am real excited to get back into the gym. The team made me take the three weeks off, it’s good, I got a good amount of rest. But, now it’s back to the schedule of dominating the cruiserweight division. I still believe that I’m the best
cruiserweight in the world. I don’t think any of them out there can beat me. I don’t think I got beat on December 11th it’s just the points on the knockdowns. But, you know, I’m going to prove in ‘09 that I am the greatest cruiserweight in the world.”

When asked if he had any other fights in mind if the rematch with Adamek isn’t forthcoming soon ‘USS’ Cunningham replied “I want to fight by the end of April, I’d love to fight in March or early April. We’re working on that with Don King. But I pray in Jesus’ name that we get the rematch right away. The buzz is hot, everybody wants to see a rematch. It’ll be money and Television will be there, so I’m excited. I’m just praying for the rematch man. If it doesn’t come we’ve got other avenues to go. We’ll go for all of them. I say in Jesus’ name I will be the two time world champion in ‘09.

Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham is intent on getting back in the ring as soon as possible and whilst it’s clear that Steve wants the rematch more than anything else and we can only hope that Tomasz Adamek’s management and promotional team agree to one soon, but if it is not to be Steve is determined to get fighting and start shaking up the cruiserweight division as early as possible in 2009.
