Ballogou-Judah crossroads fight on “Holiday Hits”

NEW YORK (November 26, 2008) – The 12-round IBF International light heavyweight championship bout between Jaffa “African Assassin” Ballogou and Daniel Judah is a crossroads fight for both New York City southpaw in the co-feature on the third annual “Holiday Hits” pro boxing show, promoted by Bob Duffy’s Ring Promotions, December 4 at the famed Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan, New York.

Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Nagy “Dominican Dynamite” Aguilera (10-0, 6 KOs), fighting out of Newburgh (NY), headlines for the first time in the 8-round main event against 7-foot Marcellus “More Than A Conqueror” Brown (25-17-1, 21 KOs), who has been a sparring partner the past two months for former world heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman.

Togo born and Manhattan residing Ballogou (46-6-1, 40 KOs), reigning IBF Continental Africa cruiserweight champion, battles Bronx’ Judah (22-3-3, 10 KOs), in the 12-round co-feature. Ballogou, 40, also is the former WBC Latin America and WBA International super middleweight champ and ex-African light middleweight title holder. He had one world title shot, losing a 12-round decision to Frankie Liles for the WBA super middleweight belt. The 31-year-old Judah, former New York State light heavyweight champion, has been stopped only once, by Darnell Wilson, and fought draws with Glen Johnson and the late Julian Letterlough.

“Both Ballogou and Judah have a lot riding on this fight,” promoter Bob Duffy said. “This is a great opportunity for two New York fighters with the winner getting rated in the top 15 (IBF). East Coast boxing is coming back. Fewer and fewer East Coast fights have been on television because name fighters weren’t fighting each other. They are now and I hope more East Coast shows will be in television next year.”

NABO lightweight champion Jorge “The Truth” Teron (22-0-1, 15 KOs), fighting out of the Bronx, takes on Aldo “El Pato” Valtierra (24-10, 13 KOs) in a 10-round, non-title Special Lightweight Attraction. Teron, trained by former Olympic gold medalist and world champion, Mark Breland, is rated No. 4 by the WBO, as well as No. 13 by the WBA and No. 19 by the WBC. Mexican warrior Valtierra is a former WBA Fedecentro and WBC FECARBOX Central American super featherweight title-holder.

Popular middleweight George “Blaze” Walton (18-3, 12 KOs), of Harlem, meets Clarence “Sonny Bono” Taylor (13-18-3, 6 KOs) in a 6-rounder. Dublin super featherweight Eddie “Pride of Tallaght” Hyland (10-1, 3 KOs), making his much anticipated New York City debut, fights Gustavo Dailey (2-3) in another 6-round bout.

Olympic flavor to “Holiday Havoc” Saturday night at Twin River Event Center, RI

PROVIDENCE (November 26, 2008) – There’s a touch of red, white and blue this holiday season in Rhode Island as the state’s only U.S. Olympic Boxing Team members, Jason “Big Six” Estrada (2004) and Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (2008), as well as 1996 Olympic alternate Jason Pires, are all scheduled to be in action Saturday night (November 29) on “Holiday Havoc” at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

“Holiday Havoc” is promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), in association with Twin River and CN8, The Comcast Network as well as (for Andrade’s fight) Banner Promotions and Star Boxing.

The show will be taped live and air Saturday, December 13 at 7:00 PM/ET on CN8, The Comcast Network in New England and the Baltimore/Washington D.C. market, as well as Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 PM/ET on Cox Sports Television.

“We’re excited to have two Olympian, Jason and Demetrius, and an Olympic alternate, Jason Pires, all fighting Saturday night on the same card in one of the most beautiful venues for boxing, Twin River,” CES president Jimmy Burchfield said. “We also have some of New England’s most talented and entertaining prospects on the undercard. We’re honored to have teamed with the U.S. Marines ‘Toys For Tots’ program and everyone attending is encouraged to bring a toy to the show for less fortunate children.”

Estrada and Andrade are two of the most decorated U.S. amateur boxers of all-time. Estrada was 261-14 in U.S. competition and the first boxer to win both the U.S. Nationals and U.S. Challenge three years (2001-2003) in a row, in addition to a gold medal in the 2003 Pan-Am Games. Andrade, who was a 2-time U.S. Nationals and National Golden Gloves champion, captured a gold medal in the 2008 AIBA World Championships.

Estrada (14-1, 3 KOs), now rated No. 7 in the NABF, fights Philadelphia southpaw Derek “The One Man Riot” Bryant (20-4-1, 17 KOs) the 8-round main event. Bryant has beaten 2-time world title challenger Frankie Swindell and Jorge Luis Gonzalez, split with Providence’s Robert Wiggins, and fought a draw with 1996 U.S. Olympic Team captain Lawrence Clay-Bey.

Andrade (1-0, 1 KO) made his pro debut this past October, stopping Patrick Cape (4-2) in the second round of their fight in the state of Washington. “Boo Boo” is making his hometown pro in a Special Super Welterweight Attraction versus Eric Marriot (0-1).

Pires, a former USBA champion, has been inactive the past 5 ½ years to concentrate on becoming a police officer in his hometown of New Bedford (MA), as well as complete his education at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. Pires, who is matched against former IBC Continental champion Frank Houghtaling (19-14-5, 3 KOs) in a 6-rounder, has only lost as a pro to Rocky Juarez, Oscar Leon and Arthur Johnson.

Lowell (MA) super middleweight “Irish” Joey McCreedy (8-2-1, 5 KOs), of Lowell (MA), square-off in a 6-round rematch against NABC champion James Johnson (23-29-3, 13 KOs).

Also on the undercard in 4-round bouts is unbeaten Pawtucket (RI) lightweight Eddie “The Puerto Rican Sensation” Soto (9-0, 4 KOs) against Blake Franklin (1-1, 0 KOs), Warwick (RI) super middleweight Keith Kozlin (1-0) faces Eric Clinton (0-4-1), Providence junior lightweight Omar Pena (0-0-1) takes on Lindberg Freeman (0-1); Worcester heavyweight Rashad Minor (1-0, 1 KO) makes his CES debut versus Ryan Shay (3-7, 3 KOs).

WBC Title Eliminator next up against Herbie Hide

PROVIDENCE (November 26, 2008) – World cruiserweight contender Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey (18-1, 10 KOs), rated No. 3 by the WBC, became the first Sovereign Nations Boxing Council (SNBC) champion last Saturday night when he won a dominating 10-round decision against Eddie “The Iron Man” Gutierrez at 4 Bears Casino in New Town, North Dakota.

SNBC links federally recognized tribes throughout the United States and Canada. SNBC’s mission is to develop, promote and help regulate boxing in a fair and professional manner by federally recognized tribes that are sovereign nations.

Godfrey won every round on two judges’ scorecards and nine on the other (100-90, 100-90, 99-91) against Gutierrez (15-6-1, 6 KOs) in a near perfect performance.

“It was an honor for me to fight for the first Sovereign Nations Boxing Council title, let alone win the first SNBC belt because I’m Native American,” Godfrey said upon returning to his Providence home. “Finally, Native American boxers have a chance to be recognized and being the first SNBC champion is a huge honor for me.

“I threw a lot of punches, put them together, and worked on everything we had trained to do. Credit Gutierrez because he can really take a punch; I hit him with some great shots. It was a good fight for me because I got in some rounds.”

Next up for Godfrey is a recently ordered WBC title elimination bout next year against No. 2 rated Herbie Hide, former 2-time WBO heavyweight champion, with the victor facing the winner of the WBC championship bout between new defending champion Giacobbe Fragameni and the No. 1 mandatory challenger, Krzystof Wlodarczyk.

“It’s a huge opportunity for me and I’m glad to be getting another chance (Godfrey’s lone loss was earlier this year in a WBC title eliminator by 12-round decision to Rudy Kraj in Germany),” Godfrey noted. “I’m looking forward to it and can’t wait to start training again. Godfrey, reigning NABF champion, is also rated No. 11 by the WBA and IBF.

“Matt fought well in North Dakota,” Godfrey’s manager Bret Hallenbeck commented. “The other guy made it difficult to look good. He was in a defensive mode the entire fight, leaning back or covering up like a turtle. We’re waiting to learn more about the WBC eliminator against Hide. We have to see what the offers are and where the fight will be.”

Matt, second heavyweight alternate on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, had a 194-23 amateur record, capturing six national championships — four open tournaments including the 2004 Everlast U.S. Championships, plus two in the Junior Olympics – as well as a Bronze medal at the 2001 Pan-American Games, Silver in all four of that year’s national major tournaments (National Golden Gloves, PAL (Police Athletic League), U.S. Championships and U.S. Challenge) and six-time New England Golden Gloves champion.

Lauzon’s goodwill trip memorable for UFC fighter and U.S. troops in Middle East

E. BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 26, 2008) – UFC lightweight contender Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon’s recent 12-day goodwill trip visiting U.S. military troops in Iraq and Kuwait was a knockout for everybody.

Lauzon (17-4, 4 KOs, 13 submissions), star of The Ultimate Fighter 5 television reality show, was on the trip with fellow mixed-martial arts fighters Jorge Rivera and Heath Herring, as well as some models and ring card girls.

“It was awesome,” Lauzon said from home. “It was one of the happiest 12 days of my life. They kept us real busy going from one camp to another. We visited 14 camps in Iraq and Kuwait. The first hour we’d give demonstrations and the second we signed autographs and posed for pictures with them. I was thrilled to see all of them over there, away from their friends and family, but helping all of us back home. It was cool to see how excited and appreciative they were to see us. There are a lot of MMA fans over there, too.

“They watch UFC events on the Armed Forces Network, but, due to the time differences, it’s on there at 3 in the morning. They watch and then start their day at 6. The weather wasn’t bad. They say it hits 150-160 degrees in the summer, but it is dry heat like in Las Vegas, not humid like it is in Massachusetts. It was between 85 and 105, hit 110 once, while we were there but it wasn’t bad at all, especially when I got off the plane back home and it was freezing.”

The special guests got to play some poker with the troops, fired weapons a few times, drive around in Humvees, and were transported from camp to camp on Black Hawk helicopters.

“It was a long, busy 12 days,” Lauzon concluded. “But I’d definitely do it again. It’s something that I’ll never forget. I’m glad I did it.”

O’Connor going to “school” each pro fight

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (November 24, 2008) – Each fight is a learning experience for any young boxer and 2008 U.S. Olympic first alternate Danny O’Connor is no exception. His pro debut in September resulted in a second-round stoppage of Jose Guerrido, but his November 11th win against 15-fight veteran Anthony Woods was much more important in terms of 23-year-old O’Connor’s development process.

O’Connor (2-0, 2 KOs) pitched a shutout against fellow light welterweight Anthony Woods (5-11, 2 KOs), winning all four rounds on each of the three judge’s scorecards (40-35, 40-36, 40-36) at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

One invaluable lesson learned by O’Connor is that, when the action doesn’t go exactly according to pre-fight plans, adjustments must be made during the action. “It was an exciting fight to watch,” he said. “We both threw a lot of punches. He’s a tough fighter; game, coming forward throwing punches. So was I. I wanted to show more of my boxing skills than I did in my first fight. I did but not as much as I wanted to because I didn’t settled down, rather looking for a knockout, instead of boxing more. Every fight is a learning experience for me and I’m already applying what I learned from that fight in the gym. I did go four rounds and now I’m used to fighting 3-minute rounds. I can’t wait for my next fight.”

O’Connor, fighting out of Framingham (MA), won this year’s US Future Stars National Championship, in which he was named Most Outstanding Boxer, as well as the National Golden Gloves Tournament, both in the 141-pound light welterweight division. Danny’s most notable victory as an amateur was a dominating performance against eventual 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz, of the Dominican Republic, who O’Connor beat on May 29 in a USA-Dominican Republic dual meet.

Uncertain about the exact date of his next fight, O’Connor is working hard at the 401 Gym in Cranston, Rhode Island with his head trainer, Dave Keefe, who also co-manages Danny with Rob Valle. O’Connor is promoted by Seminole Warriors Boxing.

“Both Rob and I were glad Danny got some rounds in,” Keefe noted. “Seminole Warriors Boxing and our team are on the same page; knocking out everyone doesn’t always yield the best long-term results. These early fights are part of the learning process for Danny.”

LOS ANGELES, CA (November 21, 2008) – Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank announced the addition of two 12-round title fights to the December 6 pay-per-view undercard of “The Dream Match,” headlined by the 12-round welterweight collision between two of boxing’s biggest attractions OSCAR DE LA HOYA and MANNY PACQUIAO.

NABO junior welterweight champion and Top-Five contender “Vicious” VICTOR ORTIZ defends his title against JEFFREY RESTO and WBO junior featherweight champion JUAN MANUEL “Juanma” LOPEZ defends his crown against Top-10 contender and Argentinian National super bantamweight champion SERGIO “Rocky” MEDINA. Combined, these four warriors have a sterling record of 100-4-1 (69 KOs) – a winning percentage of 95% and a victory by knockout ratio of 69%.

Ortiz (22-1-1, 17 KOs), from Oxnard, Calif., a former amateur standout, is currently riding a two-year, 16-bout unbeaten streak, including 12 knockout victories. He captured the vacant NABO title in his last fight, a fifth-round stoppage of Roberto Arrieta in September. Recent knockout victories of former world champion Carlos Maussa and contender Emmanuel Clottey have raised his world rating to a career-high, No, 5 in both the WBO and the WBA. Resto (22-2, 13 KOs) is enjoying a four-year winning streak. This year, the Bronx native of both Mexican and Puerto Rican descent scored decision wins over Humberto Tapia and Hector Altorre, who had a combined record of 27-8-1 when he fought them. Resto is currently rated No. 7 by the NABO.

Lopez (23-0, 21 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico, will be making his second world title defense on December 6. The 2004 Puerto Rican Olympian has not had an opponent go the distance with him in over two years. He captured the world title in June, knocking out defending champion Daniel Ponce De Leon in the first round. He retained the title in his first defense in October against Cesar Figueroa, again by first-round knockout. Medina (33-1, 18 KOs), from Salta, Argentina, enters the fight riding a five-bout winning streak, while collecting the WBO-Inter-Continental, the Argentina National and the WBA Latin American junior featherweight titles en route to a top-10 world rating.

De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao, a 12-round welterweight battle, will take place Saturday, Dec. 6 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev. DANNY “SWIFT” GARCIA REMAINS UNDEFEATED IMPROVES TO 9-0

cozzon1 Golden Boy Promotions undefeated rising star, Danny “Swift” Garcia, improves to (9-0, 7 KO’s) as he dominated a lopsided contest against Adan Hernandez (14-6), while going the distance for the second time in his career.

Garcia utilized his superior boxing skills and punching power to take an early lead as he dropped Hernandez with a beautiful left hook that landed flush on the temple. As the bout continued, the jr. welterweight sensation continued to come forward, landing crisp combinations scoring at will. In the sixth and final round, Garcia nearly ended the contest by landing a barrage of power shots to the head and body. Both fighters were deducted one point for unintentional low blows and the score cards read, 59-52 across the board, all in favor of Garcia.

Garcia who hails from the touch streets of Philadelphia commented by saying, “Hernandez was a good test for me. As a fighter coming up, you learn more by fighting stiff competition. I thought I sat on my punches and boxed well. I’m looking forward to my next fight.”
