Promoter Frank Maloney returns to Robin Park Centre in Wigan, England tonight, Friday, November 7, with an evening of competitive fights, featuring the best young talent fighting out of the UK today.

British super flyweight champion Andy Bell, 11-3 (3), faces his toughest test to date in the form of ex-Commonwealth flyweight titlist Lee Haskins, 17-2 (9), who has never lost while fighting below the bantamweight division. Bell has won seven straight, including the intense firefight against Chris Edwards eight months ago to win the British belt, but has yet to meet an opponent as crafty and experienced as Haskins, who must win at Robin Park if he is to realize ambitions to compete at European level.

Featherweight Akaash Bhatia, 12-0 (3), participates in his first title bout, a scheduled ten rounder against former English super bantam kingpin Marc Callaghan, 19-14-1 (4), for the vacant British southern area crown. After having faced super feather and lightweight opponents so far in his career, Bhatia gets a rare opportunity to box in his natural weight class but can’t afford to let Callaghan, who has faced top men from super bantam to featherweight, gain confidence and become a factor in the contest.

Welter Mark Thompson, 17-1 (10), continues the busy schedule that has seen him fight six times in 2006 and on five occasions in 2007 by taking part in his fifth bout of this year when he meets hard-nosed Scotsman Craig Dickson, 15-5-1 (8), who challenged countryman Kevin Anderson for the Commonwealth title in 2006. Thompson has stopped four of his last six opponents and will be looking to make a statement in what could be his last action of 2008.

Sharp-boxing light middle Thomas McDonagh, 32-1-3 (6), takes on battle hardened veteran Michael Monaghan, 17-23 (2), who has fought as a super middle, light heavy and even cruiserweight over the last two years and could pose problems to the career 154 pounder from Manchester. McDonagh holds wins over Bradley Pryce, Eugenio Monteiro, Marcus Portman, Marcus Concepcion and Jason Rushton but must avoid engagements and box Monaghan if he is to keep on track for a British title shot.

English super bantam champ Mark Moran, 10-0-1 (3), is coming off a thrilling stoppage of Danny Wallace but gets rewarded with a dangerous non-title assignment in the form of lightweight Youssef Al Hamidi, 4-11-1 (1). At 135 pounds or below, Hamidi has gone 4-6 and his five decision losses have been by a total margin of seven points to such quality operators as Michael Hunter, John Simpson, Ricky Burns, Akaash Bhatia and Lee Cook. 26 year old southpaw Moran has never boxed above 128 pounds and will be tested by Syrian national Hamidi.

Light heavyweight Tony Quigley, 11-1 (4), brings a four bout winning streak to his contest with teak-tough opponent Nathan King, 12-11 (1), and cannot afford to make a misstep against the Welshman, Joe Calzaghe’s main sparring partner, who has never been stopped in a professional fight.

Middleweight Martin Murray, 9-0 (3), lightweight Scott Quigg, 9-0 (5), light welter Karl Place, 1-0 (1), and super flyweight Paul Edwards, 1-0 (0), all see action while cruiserweight John Lewis Dickinson and light welter Peter Jones both make their professional debut.

NEW YORK (November 7, 2008) – NABA light middleweight champion “Mean” Joe Greene has been added to the star-studded “The Grande Event” card, promoted by Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing, November 21 at the famed Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan.

Unbeaten middleweight (heading to light middleweight) “Ireland’s” John Duddy (25-0, 17 KOs), fighting out Queens (NY) by way of Derry, Northern Ireland, headlines against veteran Sam “The Punching Policeman” Hill (17-9-1, 10 KOs). Duddy is rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Organization, No. 4 by the World Boxing Council, and No. 7 by the International Boxing Federation.

Greene (20-0), rated No. 3 by the WBA and No. 4 by the WBO, will fight an opponent to be determined in an eight-round, non-title fight.

“It always feels good to fight at home in front of my family, friends and fans,” Greene said. “I’m going to put on a real good show. NABO lightweight champion Jorge Luis Teron (22-0-1, 15 KOs), fighting out of the Bronx and rated No. 4 by the WBO, fights Aldo “El Pato” Valtierra (24-10, 13 KOs) in a 10-round bout. Teron is trained by former Olympic gold medalist and world champion Mark Breland.

THE XYIENCE SAGA CONTINUES

From my window-seat vantage point on my under-booked flight back to Boston from Sunny Vegas last Tuesday morning, I counted 15 towering cranes in the skyline of the famous strip. As the economy sours, so too do the big crowds and floods of tourists once willing and able to come and dump a bunch of cash on a whim. Now they do more than bat an eye before they settle in and spend. They look for the deals and discounts casinos throw out to get people in the door, and they scrimp and they save unless it’s on the house.

The Las Vegas I witnessed is a dust bowl of desperately overbuilt dreams facing the hard reality of a looming near-depression economy. The novelty wore off for me after my first walk through the endless lavish hallways of the Bellagio hotel (see the outdoor fountain display above). What was I doing, I asked myself, as if the Alice in Wonderland feeling of my visit had finally sunk in. I wasn’t a high roller or a big spender. I was lost trying to comprehend what the grand purpose of such an overbuilt palace of business could really be. I mean, what good is all that waste of money and energy doing society? I don’t know. I don’t want to be a party pooper or anything, but I didn’t feel the magic. Maybe I should have gone to Circus Circus for that.

My visit enlightened me in so many ways to the real breadth of the problems ahead. Where we go from here, why we go there, and who we take with us are important questions moving forward. We are at a precipice where it is do or die, work as a cohesive unit moving forward or break down by infighting. The shareholders are angry, and they should be.

It appears now that Fertitta Enterprises is suffering in more ways than one with the covenants of another loan of theirs in danger of defaulting on a violation of the covenants. SURPRISE!!! SURPRISE!!! Who knew the Fertittas were capable of breaching covenants?

Upon doing some more intimate research into the history of the Fertitta brothers’ aggressive and unprecedented land grab campaigns it’s no surprised that they’ve over leveraged themselves in a market steadily losing more and more value. Their brilliant idea was to take the gambling away from the evil eyes of the strip and bring it deep into the suburbs. Red Rock Casino, Alliante Station, Palace Station, and even a $10 billion dollar vision for a super casino were all groomed to draw people away from the traditional city center with names people knew and were already tired of. The Fertittas knew the people willing to spend the most money had to have the most money. They’d want the spas and the privacy and the intimacy of an out of the way resort. An off the beaten path destination. The problem is, like prescription drugs, the problems of this bad economy have reached the suburbs, too. Everybody hurts.

www.xyiencesucks.com is now on the verge of beginning a major campaign to get the word out about the true story behind what I call “The Enron of MMA.” It’s an awful scandal perpetrated by folks who aren’t afraid to spend hundreds of millions a year on their own family’s wild, carefree lifestyle. I am building a new and improved, full force, balls to the wall legal argument that will surprise all the lawyers who have to wade through it and find out how their clients are culpable. I’ll have volumes of documented support and affidavits up the wazoo.

CALZAGHE VS. JONES TRAINER ROUND TABLE QUOTES

Canadian Heavyweight Title Fight Tops Molitor-Caballeros Undercard

Raymond Olubowale Defends Crown Against Greg Kielsa

TORONTO, ON – November 6, 2008 – While IBF Junior Featherweight champion Steve Molitor makes his last second preparations for WBA champion Celestino Caballeros on November 21, in the most important Canadian fight in over a quarter century, two of Canada’s best heavyweights will be fighting for their own piece of national boxing history.

In the most significant Canadian heavyweight title fight in years, Raymond “Mount Kilimanjaro” Olubowale (7-2-1, 4 KO’s) defends his crown against undefeated 2000 Polish Olympian Greg Kielsa (7-0, 3 KO’s) in the co-feature to Molitor-Caballero at Rumble at Rama VI, at Casino Rama, in Rama, Ontario.

“This is easily the most important Canadian Heavyweight title fight since the days of George Chuvalo,” Kielsa’s manager, James Jardine, said.

“These guys aren’t club fighters who have no business being called champions. These are true, legit contenders, whose careers will be greatly affected by the outcome.”

Kielsa, who was born in Bialystok, Poland, but now resides in Brampton, ON, is coming off an eight round unanimous decision win over iron-fisted Jerry Butler at Rumble at Rama V this past August.

“This is my biggest fight as a pro, without question. It’s all I’ve been thinking about,” Kielsa said of his showdown with Olubowale.

“Once the fight hits rounds 7, 8, or 9, I know Ray will get tired, no question about that.”

The six foot seven, 270 lb. Olubowale who once trained along side Kielsa, pays only passing respect to his former stablemate,

“Greg is only a decent fighter, nothing more or less. There’s nothing impressive about him what so ever.”

“When we sparred together years ago, I was holding my own against him, and that was without a coach, without the same amateur background, and without a fight to train for.”

“And after seeing him fight a couple of times, he’s no better now than he was back then.”

“He says a lot,” Kielsa said of Olubowale, “but he’s blind.”

“I’m a much better fighter now than I was when we sparred, but he’s just trying to build up his own confidence.”

This was my first super-fight, at this time I had only done three to four ESPN shows in Atlantic City and sent Bob Arum a letter convincing him I could handle it (little did he know I was scared to death)! Highlight of the evening–for me–was introducing old-time fighters, including Muhammad Ali who came into the ring as the final intro and went down the line like royalty to a standing ovation.

HOW MANY TITLE FIGHTS

As I never thought this would become a career, I never kept a record…have no idea…must be 500-600 fights.

BEST FIGHT ATMOSPHERE (S)

Bismark, ND…Virgil Hill was a local hero who, as an Olympic silver medalist, had captured LT HW world title and defended it, on ABC, in front of 10,000 fans and the noise was deafening…before we went on the air I asked them to show the world their appreciation for the challenger (from Africa) and they gave him a huge ovation.

When Steve Wynn opened the MIRAGE in Vegas he had Duran vs. Leonard III outdoors…December, freezing cold, tons of celebrities, fireworks–fight was horrible, event was spectacular!

Prince Nazim’s fights in England were always electric with super entrances. Most fights in the ”big room” at MSG are great with a few rare ”klunkers.” Manilla, Philippines, was insane with Manny Paquiao fighting as he is ”GOD” in that country.

HISTORY OF Let’s Get Ready To RUMBLE…

I came up with the idea of having a “hook” to bring the fans back to attention after putting them to sleep with the introductions of 15-18 officials (that nobody cares about)…something like, ”Gentleman, start your engines!” does at the Indy 500. I tried ”Man your battle stations!” and ”Fasten your seat belts!”. I settled on the “RUMBLE” line and it appears to have been a good choice! I still get a charge out of the fan reaction and I still sometimes find myself surprised that I’m actually in the middle of (and part of) a super, sports event.

BOXERS’ FIGHTS

For the past dozen-plus years I’ve done almost all of Roy Jones Jr’s fights. The same is true of Oscar de la Hoya. I almost feel like a relative at this point. I am never surprised by anything spectacular in the ring by Roy as that’s what one can and should expect from a talent like RJ.

As for Calzaghe, I think U.S. fans are still unaware of his brilliant skills. One only has to look at his number of fights and unmarked face to realize he is a hell of a defensive fighter. Add the undefeated, perfect record while competing at the world championship level for a decade and the computer spits out the word “SUPERSTAR.”

PRONOUNCING NAMES

I really butchered Manny Pacquiao’s (#1 fighter in the world today) name the first time I introduced him…Thailand loves to torture me with their fighters names and there are a few times when my brain and tongue didn’t work together.

PERSONAL MOMENTS IN THE RING

When Foreman, at age 43, knocked out Michael Moorer to win the WBA HW title, I was so choked up with emotion I couldn’t speak. Thank god the KO was so spectacular that HBO had to replay it from every angle possible (2-3 times each) giving me time to compose myself.

Duran vs. Barkley (’89) went to a split decision win for Duran…the arena PA system went dead and I was cursing out the (house) audio tech at ringside with some brutal language–all picked up on the broadcast feed. Some brilliant work in the truck, hitting the ”kill” switch prevented this verbal assault from going out over the air, but lip readers were in for a treat. I ended up shouting the scores to a hushed audience.

There are many moments with fighters…Hagler and Tyson’s intimidating intensity, Oscar’s focus, Nazim’s showmanship coming to the ring, but Larry Holmes’ was relaxed and playful before his fight with Holyfield and while I was announcing, he danced by, chuckled a ”Hey Mike” and gave me a playful ”tap” in the shoulder. A tap from a heavyweight pro fighter is pretty good SHOT to me and I was spun around but managed to hang on to the microphone, never missing a beat.

The infamous ”Fan Man” incident (during Holyfield v Bowe) was unreal! The possibility of a riot was very real, though. I went in the ring and told the crowd that everything was under control, remain calm, stay in your seats and the fight will resume shortly. I went to each corner and got Holyfield and Bowe’s people to wrap their guys in blankets (it was a cold night) as this may take a while.

We all remember the REAL riot that ensued after the disqualification of Andrew Golota against Riddick Bowe at Madison Square Garden. I couldn’t get in the ring as it was filled with rioters but I did have the microphone and tried to calm the crowd but at the same time ask for any and all off duty police in the house to come to ringside and help us out. I stayed on the PA for about a half hour. The NYPD showed up in force eventually and order was restored. As an ”official witness” at a crime scene, I was asked to stay for a statement. When I was finally taken to a room for an interview (an hour later) it was with then New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and his Police Chief. I soon discover I was kept around because they were fans and wanted to meet me!

ENTRY INTO BOXING

I loved boxing but couldn’t afford a ticket, so I figured I could get in if I was a ring announcer. I was modeling at the time and doing some commercials, so my looks really got me the job because I had no experience or vocal training.

RANDOM MEMORIES

Muhammad Ali, kissing me on each cheek and playfully whispering in my ear, ”You a ‘pretty boy’ but you still not as pretty as me!”

The late Ted Williams greeting me with a “Hi, Mike!”…OMG, Ted Williams knows my name? Same thing happened with Kirk Douglas, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eddie Murphy, Jack Nicholas, Usher, Jay-Z and George Clooney (this list is pretty long but we can’t go on and on) through the years. I am still amazed–and flattered–that I get recognized as I am still a fan having fun at the fights!

CANCER

Finding out I had cancer was, of course, a shock. But to have THROAT AND NECK cancer was unbelievable because of what I do for a living. I knew of a problem but received confirmation three days before the Klitschko-Ibragimov fight at MSG last February and I thought that was my last show as I was to undergo surgery and prepared for chemo and radiation treatments. I held off on the surgery and managed to squeeze in another payday with Marquez vs. Pacquiao. On March 20th, I went for the surgery at USC in LA and Dr. Dale Rice, one of the very best in this field, removed all the lymph nodes on my left side (neck), my tonsils and (a very small) part of the throat. When I woke up in recovery the first thing I did was speak out loud and when I heard my voice I knew I still had my larynx. Now I had to sweat out the results and, a week later, the pathology came back negative–meaning, for now, it seems they got it all, putting off radiation and other treatment. My healing process was amazing and 30 days later, I was able to get in the ring again for Calzaghe-Hopkins in Las Vegas. I am now in that five year period of check-ups before I can, hopefully, get an official ”all clear” and, with my fingers crossed, I go day-to-day, enjoying my life and my work knowing every moment is a blessing.

Calzaghe vs. Jones “Battle of the Superpowers” is a 12-round championship for Calzaghe’s Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Championship belt. Promoted by Square Ring, Inc. and Calzaghe Promotions in association with Madison Square Garden, Calzaghe vs. Jones will take place November 8, and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.

Tickets priced at $1500, $1000, $750, $500, $250 and $150, are on sale now and can be purchased at the Garden Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets or online at ticketmaster.com.

The final episode of HBO’s all-access reality series Calzaghe/Jones 24/7 debuts tonight, Thursday, Nov. 6 at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT.

All three half-hour episodes of CALZAGHE/JONES 24/7 will be presented back-to-back-to-back Friday, Nov. 7 (8:30-10:00 p.m.), and Saturday, Nov. 8 (8:30-10:00 a.m.), on HBO. All times are ET/PT.
