Quillin, Wolak & Teron in action on Cedric Kushner’s show at Roseland Ballroom

NEW YORK (October 8, 2008) — Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing has reached an agreement with Bob Duffy’s Ring Promotions and Irish Ropes to promote “The Grande Event” – featuring “Ireland’s” John Duddy, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin, Pawel “Raging Bull” Wolak and Jorge Luis “The Truth” Teron – Friday night, November 21 at the famed Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan.

“I’m really excited about having put together this show,” promoter Cedric Kushner said, “which features four main events on the same show. I’ve had a lot of co-operation from the managers and promoters involved with the principals on this show.

“In addition to the four principal bouts, I plan to put some of the most talented young boxers on this show as well. It’s truly going to be a Grande Event.”

The four principal fighters, or the Big Apple’s “Fab Four,” have a combined pro record of 89-1-1 with 62 knockouts. All four principal fighters are scheduled to be in 10-round bouts against opponents to be determined.

Duddy (25-0, 17 KOs), fighting out Queens by way of Derry, Northern Ireland, is on the verge of a world title fight in 2009 as a middleweight of light middleweight. He is rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Association, as well as No. 5 by the World Boxing Council and No. 7 by the International Boxing Federation. The exciting Irishman will fight in the 10-round main event.

Brooklyn middleweight “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (20-0, 15 KOs), now rated No. 26 by the WBC, is coming off of a sweet 10th-round stoppage of veteran Sam Hill last month in New Hampshire.

Poland-native Wolak (22-1, 15 KOs), now living in Brooklyn, is the New York State middleweight and Polish National junior middleweight champion. He bounced right

back from his only career loss, by 10-round decision to Ishe Smith, with a third round TKO of Chad Greenhill two weeks ago.

NABO lightweight champion Teron (22-0-1, 15 KOs), representing the Bronx, also appears to be in line for a world title shot in 2009, based on his lofty ratings in the WBO (#4, WBA (#12) and WBC (#16).

Scheduled to fight in separate four-round bouts are two New Yorkers, light middleweight Lambrose Karaolides (1-0) and pro debuting light welterweight Jonathan Gonzalez.

LAS VEGAS (October 8, 2008) – World-class junior welterweight Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi (25-1, 5 KOs) took some time off from his Las Vegas TRAINING CAMP to offer his views on subject ranging from his November 22nd showdown against Ricky Hatton to abdicating his IBF title and a lot in between.

His IBF Title

“I’m very disappointed to give up my title. I did my best to win it and was very proud to wear it. I’ve never heard of the same boxer being the mandatory twice within the same year. I worked hard to get that title, but I was committed to fighting Hatton. Me and Ricky are the top two 140-pounders and we’re fighting to see who is No. 1. We could have asked for an exception requiring the winner to fight Ngoudjo next, but neither of us (Malignaggi and Hatton) would agree, so we let the IBF title go and allowed two guys we’ve already beaten fight for it while we take care of our business. We did Ngoudjo and Urango a favor by not asking for the exception and making them wait another six months to fight. I wish them the best of luck. This is the biggest fight of my career, IBF title or no title. I’m going to show the world that Paulie Malignaggi is the No. 1 light welterweight in the world.”

Hatton’s New Trainer

“Floyd Mayweather, Sr. is putting himself in a tough situation and putting a lot of pressure on Hatton. You can’t teach dogs new tricks. He can teach him a few things in two months, but Hatton doesn’t have the talent – natural speed and defensive ability. Mayweather’s been opening his mouth and when I beat Hatton, everybody is going to say he shouldn’t have gotten rid of his trainer (Billy Graham) and blame Mayweather. When they lose it’s going to cost Mayweather a lot of jobs.”

Training Camp

“I trained in the Poconos for a while. In between the press conferences (Las Vegas and London) I worked at Gleason’s (in Brooklyn). We moved camp last week to Las Vegas for a lot of reasons. I wanted to get used to West Coast time and there are plenty of good fighters in Vegas for sparring. I spar against different styles of fighters to stay sharp. I started sparring in the Poconos and everything has been good.”

“It’s fine. I’ve been hitting hard. Everybody’s going to find out how good my hand is, especially Ricky Hatton.”

“I’m confident in myself with the experience I’ve gained. I don’t worry about Hatton, his personal life or his change in trainers. I concentrate on being the best Paulie Malignaggi as possible.”

“I’m focused on Ricky Hatton, not (Oscar) De La Hoya or (Manny) Pacquiao (Hatton has talked about fighting the De La Hoya-Pacquiao winner after Malignaggi). It’s going to be a very frustrating night for Ricky Hatton. He’ll be catching a lot. I’ll prove that Paulie Malignaggi is the No. 1 140-pounder in the world.”

Lauzon punches way to being a complete UFC fighter

E. BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (October 7, 2008) – UFC lightweight contender Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon demonstrated his improved boxing skills September 17 en route to stopping Kyle Bradley (13-6) at 1:34 of the second round on UFC Fight Night 15 in Omaha, Nebraska.

The 24-year-old Lauzon (17-4, 4 KOs, 13 submissions), star of The Ultimate Fighter 5 television reality show, is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist whose striking or punching ability has been an afterthought, at least until his fight against Bradley.

Knowing that Lauzon was a much more superior fighter on the ground than him, Bradley’s focus was to stay on his feet and Joe, who has been working hard on his boxing, obliged as the first round was more of a boxing match for the two mixed-martial-arts fighters. In the second round, however, Lauzon took down Bradley and quickly got into a mount position on Kyle’s chest, wailing away with both fists. Bradley flipped over on his stomach and Lauzon unloaded with a barrage of damaging punches until the referee mercifully halted the bout.

“I must have hit him with 6-7 solid blasts, one after the other, when I had him down,” Lauzon said. “I hit him so hard and often my left shoulder hurt a little after the fight. It was a good fight for me. I dictated the fight, stalking him around, and controlled the match. In the first round he hit me with a left hook that wobbled me a bit, but it was more because I was off balance. I do need to work more on my feet to be better balance. I worked a lot on my boxing and felt fine boxing him. I kept moving forward. He didn’t want to fight me on the ground.”

In the opening round, Lauzon brought the fans to their collective feet with a tremendous Jui-Jitsu move that just missed bringing down the house. He jumped out and tried a flying heel hook, wrapping both of his legs around one of Bradley’s legs, sweeping Kyle’s legs out from under him.
‘I was sideways in the air for a split second,’ Joe described his fan-friendly move. ‘He has to go down and it puts me in position to finish him with a heel hook. It’s a great submission move but it’s just as good as a takedown. I didn’t finish the submission but it was very close.’

Joe was coming off a disappointing loss by second-round TKO to fellow Bay State fighter Kenny Florian last April 2 in the main event on UFC Fight Night 13 in Denver.

“I went from being in the main event and losing,” Lauzon noted, “to fighting off-TV on the undercard. My name alone wasn’t enough to get my fight on TV. Now, I want a bigger fight next, hopefully January 31.”

Lauzon, whose most notable victory to date was in his UFC debut (September 23, 2006 in UFC 63) when, as a 7-1 underdog, he surprisingly stopped former UFC champion Jens “Little Evil” Pulver (21-7-1) at 43 seconds of the opening round in Pulver’s first UFC loss in eight fights.

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 7, 2008) – Nicknames such as “Pee Wee” and “Meat Truck” may not exactly strike fear into an opponent, but, make no mistake, undefeated Dave “Pee Wee” Herman (11-0), of Bloomington, Ind., and Kerry “Meat Truck” Schall (21-10), of Cincinnati, Ohio, can fight.

The heavyweights — Herman, a talented, up-and-comer and hometown favorite, and the more-experienced Schall — will collide in the main event on ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series this Friday, Oct. 10, live on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast) at The Venue inside Harrah’s Horseshoe Casino at Hammond, Ind.

ShoXC, a presentation of Los Angeles-based ProElite, Inc.’s live fight division, EliteXC, showcases young, talented fighters in tough matchups. A springboard for the future stars and champions of EliteXC, ShoXC is patterned after the SHOWTIME boxing series ShoBox: The New Generation.

Speaking of nicknames, fighters known as “Fancy Pants, “Cannibal,’’ “Storm,” “The Recipe’’ and “Bubba” will appear in the other SHOWTIME fights: streaking Mamed “Cannibal” Khalidov (17-3-1) of Olsztyn, Poland, meets Jason Guida (17-17) of Schaumburg, Ill., at 205 pounds; Anthony “The Recipe’’ Lapsley (13-3) of Fort Wayne, Ind., faces Mike Stumpf (10-1) of Crystal Lake, Fla., at 170 pounds; rugged Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko (29-5) of Omsk, Russia, throws down with Robert “Bubba” McDaniel (12-4) of Wichita Falls, Tex., at 185 pounds; and Lyle “Fancy Pants’’ Beerbohm (7-0) of Spokane, Wash., takes on Brazil’s Rafaello “Trator” Olivera (2-0) in a battle of unbeaten 160-pounders.

Ten of the 12 fighters appearing in non-televised bouts hail from Indiana: Anthony Marti (5-1) takes on Jared “The Spider’’ McMahon (8-0-1) at 140 pounds; Torrance Taylor (7-4) collides with Jeff Cox (9-6) of Cleveland, Ohio, at 150 pounds; Orville Smith (8-0) meets Matt Jaggers (7-4) at 140 pounds; Tiawon Howard (8-1) battles Hector Urbina (12-4) at 170 pounds; John Kuhner (1-0) of Columbus, Ohio, takes on Deray Davis (2-2) at 170 pounds; and Josh Barnes (9-1) faces Jeremy Norton (0-2) at 265.

The scheduled 11 fights on EliteXC’s third fight card in 15 days – the others came Oct. 4 on the CBS Television Network and Sept. 26 on SHOWTIME — are scheduled for three, 5-minute rounds.

Outside the cage, Herman is perhaps the most colorful, comical, laid-back, unconventional fighter in mixed martial arts history. He trains out of his house, doesn’t belong to a team and pays hardly any attention to MMA fights he’s not a participant in. But you can’t argue with the results. He’s perfect so far.

Herman doesn’t appear to take anything seriously, least of all himself. Hence, the six-foot-five, 24-year-old’s nickname: “Pee Wee.” Actually, he’s contemplated changing his nickname to “BlueBerry Muffin.” See, he loves his mother’s homemade pastries. But he’s no cupcake, at least in the cage.

Since turning pro in December 2006, the athletic, former Indiana-Bloomington standout wrestler with impressive striking skills and amazing knees has won eight fights via knockout and three by submission. He has never fought to a decision and only one fight has gone past the first round.

Herman is making his third start for EliteXC and second on SHOWTIME. He scored a third-round TKO (knees and punches) over Mario Rinaldi on Feb. 16, 2008, and a crowd-pleasing 2:19, opening-round TKO (strikes) over veteran Ron “H20” Waterman on June 14, 2008, on SHOWTIME.

Schall, an experienced fighter who was part of the original cast on the second season of “The Ultimate Fighter,’’ has faced some impressive competition in a 10-year career, including a fight with Fedor Emelianenko. Schall owns notable victories over Wade Hamilton and Brian Ebersole.

Not known as a heavy striker, Schall, 2-2 in his last four fights, can be expected to try and take this to the ground.

Khalidov, who is making his United States, EliteXC and SHOWTIME debut, will enter the cage with a 12-fight unbeaten streak (11-0-1). A small light heavyweight at only 195 pounds, the Chechen Top Team member Khalidov has competed exclusively in Poland and Lithuania.

A draw against Daniel Tabera in his last start on Sept. 13, 2008, ended a run of 11 consecutive victories for Khalidov, whose style reminds some of a young Mauricio “Shogun’’ Rua.

The younger brother of top lightweight Clay Guida, Jason Guida has fought some good ones since going pro in July 2003. A winner of two of his last three, Jason also will be making his EliteXC debut.

Lapsley has registered submissions in nine of his 12 victories, including a 1:34, first-round submission over Aaron Wetherspoon in his last start on Aug. 14, 2008.

An exceptional athlete, Lapsley has kept busy since turning pro. His first appearance for EliteXC will mark the 17th time he has gone to the post since June 2006.

Stumpf, who has triumphed inside the distance in six of his 10 victories, will bring a four-fight winning streak into his EliteXC and SHOWTIME debut. Perhaps his most noteworthy victory came when he scored a second-round TKO (strikes) over Dom O’Grady on June 14, 2008.

The 21-year-old Stumpf has a strong wrestling base thanks in large part to his father, who was a Division I standout in folk-style and Greco-Roman wrestling and was considered to be Olympic-caliber.

Shiemenko possesses good Muay Thai and is a tough striker with knockout capability. No stranger to winning streaks, he began his career 15-0 and enters this one having won six in a row, all inside the distance. Five of the six ended in the first round and the other was over in the second.

A well-conditioned, 24-year-old knockout artist, Shiemenko has been fighting his entire life. His biggest victory, though, came when he decided at an early age to focus on athletics and managed to stick with it.

In the Siberian city of Omsk where Shiemenko grew up, statistics indicate that 50 percent of the city’s youth are either in prison, addicted to drugs, or dead by the age of 21.

McDaniel is a serious-minded, tough Texan who has won his last two starts, including a startling 0:41, first-round submission (rear naked choke) over Icon Sport middleweight champion Kala “Kolohe” Hose in a non-title fight on June 14, 2008, in Hawaii.

A submission whiz, nine of McDaniel’s 11 victories have come inside the distance. None of his fights have lasted more than two rounds.

Beerbohm is making his sixth start in 2008 and ninth since his pro debut on Aug. 30, 2007. In his last outing, he went the distance for the first time, scoring a unanimous decision over Ed Nuno on April 18, 2008.

Olivera is a Brazilian making his debut on EliteXC and SHOWTIME.

Two Title Fights Highlight Action-Packed Fight Card

Des Moines, IA- October 7, 2008- Mixed martial arts (MMA) once again lights up the historic Val Air Ballroom on Wednesday, November 26. MCC 17: Thanksgiving Throwdown, is the third annual MCC event held on the eve of Thanksgiving. The special holiday show consistently showcases much of the top talent from throughout the year. This years show features two championship bouts, including one that will crown the vacant middleweight belt. The other title bout welcomes the return of current MCC light heavyweight champ, and WEC veteran, Chuck “The Reverend” Grigsby.

Grigsby’s preparation and WEC experience will come into play as he returns to MCC to defend his title against perhaps his greatest challenger to date. Grigsby faces Travis “Ironman” Fulton, a UFC vet credited with the most fights in mixed martial arts history. Fulton’s resume of 200 plus fights reads like a virtual who’s who of the sport, and a win by Grigsby would catapult him to center spotlight.

The evenings co-main event and middleweight title bout features undefeated prospect Zac Cummings vs. former MCC champ Mike “Mini Van” Van Meer. Cumings previously ripped through opponents like Victor Moreno and Danny Anderson in his quest for the coveted championship. Van Meer is a one man fight factory, and the match up of these two fine wrestlers combined with impressive stand and bang talents are sure to please the crowd.

Other top billed fights in the eleven bout card include Cole Jennett as he moves one step closer to a title shot when he takes on Chris Powers. Jennett’s recent loss to Mike Van Meer has fueled his competitive fire to win this bout. Jennett has expanded his training regimen and partners, and went on record stating “losing is not an option”. Powers has wins against both Brian Green and Doug Onstot and he appears unfazed by the challenge. The warrior who takes this match places himself in line for a title shot.

Fans will also line up to see proven performers including Paul “The Gingabread Man” Bird, Josh “The Bull Christensen, Jesse Lund, and Ryan Langmaid.

The third CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS mixed martial arts event was Saturday’s #1 program on both broadcast and cable in adults 18-34, men 18-34 and men 18-49 (tie), according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Oct. 4.

For the night, the prime time mixed martial arts event placed first in adults 18-34, men 18-34 and men 18-49 (tie) against such other sporting events as the Major League Baseball playoffs (cable), college football (cable and broadcast) and a competing mixed martial arts cable telecast.

CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS (S) (9:00-11:20PM) posted a 2.7/05 with 4.56m viewers, 2.7/10 in men 18-34, 2.7/08 in men 18-49, 2.9/08 in men 25-54, 2.0/07 in adults 18-34, 2.0/06 in adults 18-49 and 2.1/06 in adults 25-54.

Compared to the last CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS (July 26, 2008), CBS was up +59% in households (from 1.7/04), +75% in adults 25-54 (from 1.2/04), +100% in adults 18-49 (from 1.0/04), +150% in adults 18-34 (from 0.8/04), +93% in men 25-54 (from 1.5/05), +108% in men 18-49 (from 1.3/05), +170% in men 18-34 (from 1.0/05) and added +1.99m viewers (from 2.57m, +77%).

With the mandatory defense of his International Boxing Foundation Cruiserweight Crown being announced last week, Philadelphia’s own Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham came face to face with his Polish born opponent, Tomasz ‘Polish Warrior’ Adamek, for the first time at the annual Pulaski Day parade in New York City.

Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham (21-1, 11 KOs), an all-American boy, started boxing in the mid-1990’s whilst serving in the US Navy aboard the USS America and USS Enterprise as an aircraft refueler, will sail into battle with the former WBO light heavyweight world champion, Tomasz ‘Polish Warrior’ Adamek (35-1, 24 KOs), at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Thursday, December, 11th, 2008.

Cunningham, who was warmly welcomed by the New York Polish community was clearly enjoying his day in the Big Apple said of being on the parade.

“It ‘s a unique experience, not something you get to do that often, you know, being an American fighter on the Pulaski Day parade. It’s pretty awesome. It’s only right that I be here as I’m a recognized face to the Polish community, even have a few Polish fans, not as many as I’d like to have, but then again I do keep fighting their guys.”

“From fighting over in Poland a couple of times, I’ve grown to really respect the Polish fans, they’re so passionate. Regardless whether they’re cheering for me or against me, I can’t help but like them. It was fun and a real honor be here today”

‘USS’ Cunningham will be making the second defense of the IBF 200-pound limit title, which he won by defeating Krzystztof Wlodarczyk in Poland on May 26, 2007.

For the first defense of his crown ‘USS’ Cunningham steamed into Germany where he defeated the bookies favorite, Marco Huck, with a twelfth round technical knockout following the slickest display of boxing seen anywhere last year.

His opponent, Tomasz ‘Polish Warrior’ Adamek won the World Boxing Organization light heavyweight title in 2005 by beating Australian, Paul ‘Hurricane’ Briggs, in a bruising twelve round battle. Adamek held the title until February 2007 when New Haven, Connecticut’s ‘Bad’ Chad Dawson beat him by a narrow points decision.

The International Boxing Federation World Cruiserweight Championship Title Fight between Champion, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham and challenger, Tomasz ‘Polish Warrior’ Adamek is co-promoted by Main Events and Don King Productions, will take place at The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Thursday December 11th 2008.
