Former German Champion, Juergen ‘The Rock’ Hartenstein, co-featured in Kansas

Philadelphia, PA. 3rd September 2008

Former BDB (Germany) super middleweight champion, Juergen ‘The Rock’ Hartenstein (11-13-1), is back in action this coming Saturday against Puerto Rico’s number 1 rated, Carlos ‘Baby Sugar’ De Leon Jnr. (20 -2-2 with 13 KOs), at the Zeferino Entertainment promoted fight night at the Prairie Band Casino & Resort, Mayetta, Kansas.

In 2006 Hartenstein moved from his home town of Munich, Germany to Philadelphia in the hope of resurrecting his once glorious career. The award winning film ‘Comeback’ documents Hartenstein’s preparations for his return to the sport after a three year sabbatical as well as his journey across the Atlantic and his first fight on American soil against Max Alexander at the Blue Horizon.

He lost and it looked like his American dream may be over before it had even started. Not so, various local promoters like what they see in the plucky German and decided to give him another chance.

His next two fights against Cullen Rogers and Jacob Rodriguez didn’t go well either as he lost both of them.Then after his controversial ‘loss’ against Khalil Farah at the Blue Horizon back in January this year, Hartenstein, who at the time was training himself, decided that if he was going to get back to winning ways he would need some serious professional help.

In May 2008 he found just that when he recruited famed trainer Willie Folks as well as moving to new training facilities at the Legendary James Shuler Memorial Gym. Training alongside current IBF cruiserweight champion, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, USBA heavyweight champion ‘Fast’ Eddie Chambers, USBA light heavyweight champion, Yusaf Mack and sparring with notable fighters Gee Culmer and Jamaal ‘Da’ Truth Davis, Hartenstein has come on a pace and has quickly rediscovered the skills that took him all
the way to a challenge for European Title against Silvio Branco in 2002.

Hartenstein vs De Leon is co-feature to the David Medina vs Steve Walker WBC USHBC Middleweight Title fight on Saturday 6th September.

JOSH “THE PUNK” THOMSON EAGERLY AWAITS NEXT FIGHT

Strikeforce lightweight champion, Josh “The Punk” Thomson (15-2) is eagerly awaiting his next fight when he squares off against Ashe Bowman (12-4) at the Playboy Mansion September 20, 2008.

Working hard during this training camp, Thomson’s been sparring with Rob “Razor” McCullough at his training facility in Huntington Beach CA and Trevor Prangley out in Idaho. “Training camp is going great. I’m working out with some of the best fighters in the sport.” mentioned Thomson, “I get back home next week and will continue to work hard at my gym, (AKA) American Kickboxing Academy with my trainers Javier Mendez and Bob Cook.”

Riding a 7 fight wining streak, Thomson looks to continue his winning ways. “I’ve been feeling great since I won my title. I’m confident in my ability to put on a great show. I’m excited and I’m ready to go.” said Thomson. “Bowman’s a tough fighter with a good record, but he will have his hands full come September 20th. It’s going to be a great night of action.”

STAR BOXING’S YOUNG STAR RAYMOND SERRANO ANNIHILATES OPPONENT IN VERY FIRST ROUND

BRONX, NY – (Aug 31, 2008)– Raymond Serrano (7-0, 5KO’s), Star Boxing’s 19 year old welterweight phenomenon, scored a first round knockout over veteran Jimmy LeBlanc (11-15-4, 3KO’s) Friday night at the New Alhambra in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Serrano came out very aggressive and started landing big shots against his opponent. Serrano seemed to be on a completely different level then the much more experienced LeBlanc as he continuously teed off on his opponent with huge over hand rights. Serrano dropped his opponent three times before the referee called a halt to the contest at 2:37 of the very first round. “I felt great coming in,” said Serrano. He was looking to box so I knew right away I was going to have to put a lot of pressure on him. I knew after I hit him with the first big right hand that it would only be a matter of time before I stopped him. It was great fighting here in Philadelphia, and I want to thank everyone who came out to see me tonight. I am going to enjoy the holiday weekend and then I will be back in the gym on Wednesday. I am looking to fight hopefully at the end of September maybe early October, whatever my promoter Joe DeGuardia and Star Boxing put together for me I will be ready to go.” Serrano improves his record to 7-0, 5KO’s.

Please Pray for Alex Ramos: Champion for all ex-fighters – now fighting for his own life

Hundreds of phone calls each year come into the (805) 955-9064 home of former USBA middleweight champion Alex Ramos.
MOST are from current or retired boxers that have fallen on hard times.

MANY of these calls from Alex’s boxing brothers can’t or won’t even be followed up with a “thank-you” call after receiving that much desired help, yet one thing is for sure…

ALL these calls will be answered.

Since forming the Retired Boxers Foundation in 1995, proudly serving as the non-profit organization’s president since day one, Alex Ramos has devoted his life to helping his fellow retired boxers in need.

While having to rely on miniscule funds raised from not enough fundraisers and donations, the “RBF” has been able to literally come to the aid of thousands of hurting fighters. This was as much a part due to the relentless efforts of the committed five-time New York Golden Gloves champion, as it was to his infectious smile, his warm personality and gigantic, lovable heart; which drew many willing resources from outside boxing.

Surprisingly, and embarrassingly, support from within boxing – a sport and business that Ramos has embraced since he first entered a Bronx gym, along with his father, at the age of eleven – has been virtually non-existent.

The RBF’s Executive Director Jacquie Richardson, a Simi Valley governmental worker, is the backbone of the organization.

One of the many RBF hats that Richardson dutifully wears is that of “Surrogate Mother” to the forty-seven year-old former middleweight contender who sometimes needs to be prodded to takes his pills, make his scheduled doctor visits, or simply insist on his taking a much needed walk if the always-hyper Ramos’s stress level soars while spending countless hours manned at his computer answering the endless drove of emails.

“Mama Jacquie” as she is affectionately called sensed something wasn’t right, after not hearing from Alex since Thursday evening and realizing his email had not been checked for close to fifteen hours.

Those of us dearly close can expect calls usually every fifteen minutes!

Nervously calling upon Alex’s apartment complex manager, a conscientious check found Ramos unconscious, barely breathing and in near-death condition. Rushed to a nearby hospital and feverishly worked on for over an hour in order to be resuscitated, Ramos spent the day in critical condition with a grim prognosis.

After battling for many hours Alex has been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He is currently on a respirator; his condition has been stabilized, but has not regained consciousness and is in a drug-induced coma, to rest his brain.

Latest word is that Alex’s eyes are following the direction of light from his doctor’s flashlight and they may plan to take him off the respirator sometime tomorrow, although he is still unconscious.

Alex Ramos is a credit to boxing and has been a shining star of hope for so many downtrodden warriors who had mistakenly thought that they were forgotten…NOW is their time to say “THANKS”.

We all need to help Alex, with our prayers and our hope.

I haven’t met anyone, in or out of boxing, who is so dear, so genuinely warm and caring, and so deeply motivated and passionate for the cause, as Alex.

I love him like a brother, and hope you will say a prayer for Alex Ramos.

“Steel Pole” Tops Butler to Remain Undefeated

RAMA, ON – Greg “The Steel Pole” Kielsa (7-0, 3 KO’s) remained unbeaten, putting in his most complete professional performance to date in outclassing a tough Jerry Butler (7-5, 7 KO’s) over eight rounds en route to an impressive unanimous decision Friday night at Casino Rama’s Rumble at Rama V.

Kielsa’s superior conditioning, footwork, and combinations carried the day, proving simply too much to overcome for Butler, who came in to the contest having stopped every foe he’s defeated.

“He was like a tank in there,” a victorious Kielsa said of Butler after notching his seventh win in as many pro fights.

“But I came in to the ring in great shape and was able to execute my gameplan.”

The Bialystock, Poland native, who now resides in Brampton, Ontario, then set his sights on Canadian heavyweight champion Raymond Olubowale, who followed Kielsa’s win with his own unanimous decision win, a six round nod over Demetrice King.

“I’ll fight Raymond in a heartbeat. I’ll fight him next week.”

Olubowale seemed more than up to the challenge, throwing down a gauntlet of his own.
“Greg isn’t even close to being in my class. I’ll beat him up like a schoolgirl”.

“The Canadian Kid” Successfully Defends Title at Casino Rama

November Unification Bout with WBA Champ Caballero Looms

MNJIKANING (RAMA), ON (Friday, August 29th, 2008) – Once again, “The Canadian Kid” Steve Molitor (28-0, 11 KO’s) made being a world champion look deceptively easy, turning back the determined challenge of Ceferino Labarda (18-1, 7 KO’s) via a tenth round technical knockout Friday night in the main event of Rumble at Rama V, at Casino Rama.

Like his previous four title defenses, the IBF Junior Featherweight champion demonstrated a rare brilliance in every facet of the sweet science, punishing the previously undefeated Labarda with crisp hooks, crosses, and debilitating body shots.

After needing a couple of rounds to get in a rhythem, Molitor began landing bombs with both hands, gradually wearing down the resolute Labarda, flooring him in the ninth before a punishing flurry prompted referee Charlie Fitch to step in and stop the fight.

Official time was 2:34 seconds of the tenth round.

“It was definitely one of my best performances,” a triumphant Molitor told the media after the fight. “I didn’t go out to try and stop him. I just went in and put my punches together. I knew once I hurt him to the body in the ninth he was going out.”

The Molitor victory paves the way for Casino Rama and Orion Sports Management to close the deal on one of the biggest fights in Canadian boxing history – a title unification bout between “The Canadian Kid” and WBA champion Celestino Caballero, of Panama, on November 21. That superfight depends on Caballero successfully defending his title on September 18 in Panama against lightly regarded Elvis Meija.

“We’ve crossed one hurdle, now we await September 18,” said Allan Tremblay, President of Orion Sports Management. “I’ll be sitting ringside in Panama with a contract in my pocket for Caballero to sign.”

Pending sanctioning by the IBF, WBA, and the Ontario Athletic Commission, a Molitor-Caballero showdown at Casino Rama would be the first title unification bout ever on Canadian soil, and the most significant bout in Canada since the 1980 Roberto Duran vs. Sugar Ray Leonard blockbuster at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium.

“The Rumble at Rama series has established Casino Rama as a world class venue for elite championship boxing, and is immensely succesful,” said Jeff Craik, Casino Rama Vice President, Marketing. “Bringing a Molitor-Caballero unfication bout to the Casino Rama ring would be unlike anything we’ve ever seen in Canada before.”

In addition to Molitor’s convincing victory over Labarda at Rumble at Rama V, Canadian Heavyweight champion Raymond Olubowale avenged a brutal KO loss to Demetrice King, earning a hard fought six-round unanimous decision over the Michigan fighter. Heavyweight Greg Kielsa topped tough Jerry Butler over eight exciting rounds. Two Montreal fighters retained their NABA belts. Super featherweight Beniot Gaudet outlasted iron-chinned Alejandro Barrera over ten thrilling rounds, while Olivier Lontchi eeked out a split decision draw over upset-minded Eduardo Garcia.
