Trainer John Bray Teams Up With Law Enforcement

August 4, 2008 -The John Bray Boxing Club has teamed up with the Foothill Jeopardy Program for an amateur show that is scheduled to take place on Sunday, August 17, 2008. In a continuing effort to help the community in preventing violence while promoting discipline and academic success among school-age students, Bray has formed an allegiance with Officers Fernando Avila and Jose Herrera of the Los Angeles Police Department as well as Jose Jimenez who has been a longtime volunteer for the Jeopardy Program.

These gentlemen share a mutual feeling and commitment to keep at-risk youth off the streets by ensuring that these kids have a safe place to go while participating in sports activities such as boxing. Bray knows first hand how important is it to have a boxing gym or extra-curricular activity to participate in as he grew up on Delano Street, one of the most notorious neighborhoods in Van Nuys, California. Through boxing he would achieve his dream of representing the United States, becoming a professional boxer and presently, a world renowned boxing trainer.

The Jeopardy Program is within the LAPD’s juvenile division and targets children “at risk” of becoming involved in gang activity and offers them a variety of educational and physical projects; from tutoring to martial arts. Longtime volunteer Jose Jimenez and Officers Avila and Herrera have been critical components to the program’s success and have been assisting with the boxing program at the Foothill Jeopardy Boxing Gym in Pacoima.

The John Bray Boxing Club and the Foothill Jeopardy Program are hoping that this amateur show will showcase the boxing skills that these young kids have developed as well as giving them a feeling of achievement whether they win or lose.

Coach Oleson was a three year starter, two time national qualifier, and wrestled at 174 pounds all four years. He was an assistant coach for three years for the warriors. During his tenure at Waldorf, Coach Oleson has coached four All-Americans and one national champion.

9:40 Jay Jaggers- Senior-141 LBS. The Ohio State University. Jaggers became an All-American in 2007 after compiling a 5-2 mark at the NCAA championships (3/15-17/07) to finish seventh. Jaggers began and ended his national run against Harvard’s and No. 13 Max Meltzer, defeating him in the seventh-place match-up, 7-1. It was Jaggers’ first official appearance on the national stage, after qualifying for NCAAs in 2005-06, but was forced to bow out of the championships because of a knee injury. At the 2007 Big Ten Conference Championships (3/3-4/07), Jaggers recorded the fastest fall time at 25 seconds against Purdue’s Nick Bertucci and that time places him tied for seventh all-time in the OSU record book. During his redshirt-freshman campaign in 2005-06, Jaggers finished with 26 wins, which was a tie for the team best. Additionally, Jaggers’ 15 dual wins was No. 1 on the team among starters. Included in those overall wins was a first-place finish at the Michigan State Open (11/12-13/05), as well as a second-place showing at the Southern Scuffle (12/29-30/05). During that same season, Jaggers earned an individual ranking as high as seventh in the Amateur Wrestling News polls and eighth in the USA Today/NWCA/InterMat standings. Academically, Jaggers is a 2006-07 Academic All-Big Ten honoree, as well as a 2007 NWCA All-Academic Team member and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.

10:05 Mike Pucillo- Junior-184 LBS. The Ohio State University. Ohio State career/2006-07 (Freshman season) – Pucillo earned All-America laurels in his first complete season of collegiate wrestling with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA championships. Finishing the season with a 26-5 overall record, Pucillo concluded the regular season with an impressive 7-1 Big Ten ledger, which was a part of a 14-1 overall dual mark. At the national championships, Pucillo defeated Top 20 wrestlers in No. 17 Trevor Brandvold (Wisconsin), No. 9 Christian Sinnott (Central Michigan) and No. 10 Louis Caputo (Harvard). Pucillo entered the postseason with a team-best .950 winning percentage (19-1). Although seeing limited action at the beginning of the season because of injury, Pucillo did win 16-consecutive matches to begin his collegiate career at Ohio State before losing his first match of the season to No. 1-ranked Jake Herbert of Northwestern (2/4/07). Included in that 16-match winning streak was the individual title at the Las Vegas Invitational (12/1-2/06). During the Las Vegas Invite, Pucillo won via two major decisions and a fall before downing fourth-ranked Raymond Jordan of Missouri, 3-1, in the semifinals and No. 3 Tyrel Todd of Michigan, 12-6, in the finals en route to the title. Pucillo already had opened the season with a 3-2 win against Jordan in dual action (11/16/06) and later against the Wolverines in dual competition (2/11/07), defeated Todd for the second time. For his efforts in Vegas, Pucillo was awarded Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Week Honors (12/4/06). In all, Pucillo faced eight ranked wrestlers during the regular season and compiled a 7-1 mark. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Pucillo also was a 2007 Academic All-Big Ten and NWCA All-Academic Team award winner, as well as an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.

Godfrey offended by Calloway’s comments

PROVIDENCE (August 5, 2008) – NABF cruiserweight champion Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey (16-1, 9 KOs) had his nose bent out of shape, so to speak, by recent comments attributed to Rob “All American Prize Fighter” Calloway.

Calloway (70-7-2, 56 KOs) was quoted as saying, “I’ve never turned down any fight!” He went on to proclaim that he deserved a title fight because he’s the WBC Americas champion and proceeded to call out Rudolf Kraj, Firat Arslan and Enzo Maccaranelli. Godfrey took offense on two counts: Team Calloway passed on an opportunity to fight Godfrey for his NABF belt on August 29 in an ESPN main event; Calloway is rated No. 11, behind No. 5 Godfrey.

“I know Rob and he’s a great guy,” Godfrey said, “but my speed and movement would be too much for him to handle. If he wants to fight the elite guys in the cruiserweight division, he should have taken the fight against me to prove himself. I am an elite cruiserweight – No. 5 — but he didn’t take the fight.”

Despite Rob proclaiming he’d fight anyone in the world given three weeks notice, Team Calloway reportedly passed on Godfrey because Rob had a fight July 19 against Max Alexander (14-2-1), which ended in a 12-round draw. Godfrey’s only loss as a pro was a close 12-round decision in a WBC title eliminator to Kraj in Germany this past March.

Matt, second heavyweight alternate on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, had a 194-23 amateur record, capturing six national championships — four open tournaments including the 2004 Everlast U.S. Championships, plus two in the Junior Olympics – as well as a Bronze medal at the 2001 Pan-American Games, Silver in all four of that year’s national major tournaments (National Golden Gloves, PAL (Police Athletic League), U.S. Championships and U.S. Challenge) and six-time New England Golden Gloves champion.

Godfrey was a highly decorated U.S. amateur who defeated many of today’s contemporary pro boxers in the amateurs such as former WBA middleweight title challenger Randy “The Gentleman Griffin (24-2-3, 12 KOs), unbeaten heavyweight prospect Chazz “Mensa With Muscles” Witherspoon (23-1, 15 KOs), Devin Vargas (16-0, 7 KOs), Corey “Black Ice” Cummings (16-3, 12 KOs), Leonard “Haitian Sensation” Pierre (18-3, 13 KOs) and John Johnson (12-2, 10 KOs).

KALIESHA WEST CALLS OUT NABF #1 CONTENDER TERRI LYNN CRUZ!

August 4, 2008 — Top bantamweight contender Kaliesha “Wild Wild” West (10-0-0, 2 KO’s) is calling out NABF #1 contender Terri Lynn Cruz (16-5-2, 7 KO’s) after recent news surfaced that Cruz would be fighting for the NABF Female bantamweight title on September 11, 2008 against Marianne Churbirka (4-4-0, 3 KO’s). What is surprising to West and her team is that Cruz who is the #1 contender for the NABF bantamweight title, balked at an offer to fight West in July and is now scheduled to challenge Churbika who is not well known and hasn’t fought since 2006.

According to boxrec, West is currently the #2 contender in North America and feels like she is being ducked. Coming off an impressive knock-out win against Elizabeth Cervantes just proved that she is one of the elite female boxers in the sport and should be in a title bout. West is only the second boxer ever to knock-out Cervantes next to Melinda Cooper. Cruz is ranked #6 by the WBC while West is ranked #10 respectively.

Kay West would like no more than a fair chance at a shot for the title as she has earned it. For Terri Lynn Cruz and her managers to take a fight for the title against a boxer that hasn’t fought since 2006 is uncalled for. West would like to give fans a fight that is fair and good for women’s boxing, which is the top two bantamweight fighters in North America battling for the vacant NABF Female bantamweight title.

“Cowboy Up: An Intimate Journal of a Championship Season”

Wrestling fans don’t let the title “Cowboy Up” deceive you in to believing that you won’t relate or enjoy this book due to the program that Parrish writes about. It matters not which school you root for or where you send your checks of support. While it does focus on Oklahoma State University’s Cowboy Wrestling Program, you’ll find it’s more about Wrestling as a sport and the people that embrace its constant demand for excellence. You’ll wolf this book down chapter by chapter like a hungry wrestler not worrying about making weight.

While reading Judge Parrish’s prose, embracing his observations and delighting in his ample helpings of glimpses behind the scenes I found his book was more about the heart of a wrestler. Our community hopefully will read this book with an open mind. No doubt there are those of you out there that bleed the colors of your collegiate programs so much so that you wouldn’t think of touching this book. That’s too bad. This book will help you recapture why you first fell in love with this sport.

You’ll enjoy “Cowboy Up” for its unique insight into the hidden humorous side of Steve Mocco, the pain, injuries and anguish endured by Johnny Hendricks, the almost religious like leadership of Chris Pendleton, the fanatical embrace of the wrestler and the program by it’s supporters. “Cowboy Up” shoots in deep, with a vice like grip that grabs on to your ankle and hangs on to the truth of the matter. We see him as a proud father to his young son Joseph, and witness his late night phone calls from the road to his patient and loving wife Toni. To read “Cowboy Up” is to better know the man. Like many others in his position that endure the “Season”, Smith’s softly spoken words often echo loudly for all to hear. I’ve heard many fans, coaches and athletes say “I have a better understanding of wrestling because of John Smith”.

Wrestling is hard and we need to understand that, embrace it and encourage all that goes in to making a wrestling champion.
