Posted on | November 8, 2011 | No Comments

Baltimore, MD (November 8, 2011) – Rising heavyweight stars Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell and Maurice “Freight Train” Byarm and popular contender Fernando Guerrero each announced that they’ll attend the “Boxing For Boobs” amateur show to honor Breast Cancer awareness.

The card takes place Friday, November 11 at the Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, MD and is promoted by Jake Smith’s Baltimore Boxing Promotions in association Chris Nissley. Following the show, Smith and Nissley will make a charitable contribution to the American Breast Cancer Foundation.

Widely regarded as America’s best heavyweight hopeful, Mitchell is 23-0 with 17 wins by knockout. The 29 year old Brandywine, MD native was an All-American linebacker at Michigan State and is slated to challenge Timor Ibragimov Saturday, December 10 on HBO.

A likable and personable figure outside of the squared circle, Byarm is a throwback heavyweight who makes new fans each and every time he fights. At 13-0-1 with 9 wins by knockout, the Washington, DC based fighter is working his way up the ranks and is expected to make his national TV debut in the near future.

One of the most popular regional fighters in America, Guerrero, 21-1 (16 KO’s), is a contender in both the junior middle and middleweight divisions. The Salisbury, MD based Dominican brings massive crowds each time he fights at home, in addition to making a name for himself on an international level due to his fan-friendly style.

“It means a ton to get support from the pro fighters in the area,” said Smith, who promoted some of Mitchell and Byarm’s bouts. “This is going to be a special night without question.”

Local pros, including 17-year-old phenom Dusty Harrison, Steve Wheeler and Alex Guerrero will also be on hand.

All fighters will be available to take pictures and sign autographs for ticketholders.

To help raise awareness, four local women, Chantel Fletcher, Nicole Cruz, Angie Braccia and Amy Heath will be amongst the participants fighting to help knockout breast cancer.

Tickets to “Boxing for Boobs” start at $20 and are available on Baltimoreboxing.com or by calling 410-375-9175 or 443-848-6059. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the first bout is scheduled for 8 o’clock.

The normally outspoken Pajkic, who said at his press conference in Canada on Dec, 20, 2010 “Once the day comes, if he gets enough balls to fight me, he is going to be well overmatched against me. And believe you me, Tyson Fury WILL get knocked out.” has now decided not to comment until he has ripped the title from around Fury’s waist.

His promoter Rick Smiciklas said “I’ve just talked to Neven and he said that he has no comment and is going to do his talking in the ring and he will have lots to say when he has the commonwealth belt around his waist on Saturday night.”

Neven is in the best shape of his life and there will be no excuses from him as he looks to under promise and over deliver a great fight to people watching here on Channel 5 and back home on Super Channel.”

The Kid’ comes home to the MFC: Ryan McGillivray marks return at Bitter Rivals in January

Posted on | November 7, 2011 | No Comments

Ryan McGillivray has returned to the place where his career was launched.

Coming off his appearance on The Ultimate Fighter: Season 14, “The Kid” has signed on to once again be a key figure in the Maximum Fighting Championship’s welterweight division. McGillivray (11-5-1) will make his return to the organization at MFC 32: Bitter Rivals taking place on Friday, January 27 at the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta.

“There were a lot of factors in my decision to be back in the MFC,” explained McGillivray, who has 12 fights in the MFC ring on his resume.

“I got tired of dealing with the people in other organizations. I just want to fight and the MFC is the best platform for me to do that.”

McGillivray’s opponent on the HDNet Fights card will be announced shortly, though the 25-year-old, who will be fighting in front of a partisan hometown crowd, already has his eye on a few names including those in the hunt for the MFC welterweight crown.

“You’re only as good as your last fight. Dhiego Lima and Sheldon Westcott are both doing very well, but come January I’m going to show where I belong amongst them,” noted McGillivray, who boasts nine victories via submission but is determined to show an improved overall attack.

“My stand-up has never been better. I was never known as a stand-up fighter. I’d look to take it to the ground. Now I think I’ve got a vastly underrated stand-up game.

“I learned a lot of tricks being on the show and training down at (Greg) Jackson’s. I think I’ve improved 10-fold.”

McGillivray, whose career began with a five-fight unbeaten run, has dropped just one of his last five bouts. While part of that success has come from those improved striking skills, a major element has been McGillivray’s change in mental approach. The ever-jovial personality is still there, but added in is a clearly much deeper desire to compete at an elite level.

“I’m fighting more desperately,” declared McGillivray. “Fighting has always been a part of my life, but it’s now become how I feed my daughter Peighton, pay my bills, and make my living. I think that says a lot. It’s become much more important to me.

“It’s my business and I want to increase my value. Fortunately it’s my life … it’s what I do for work and it’s what I love. It’s really given my life deeper meaning and I’m fighting with a lot more emotion.”

Tickets for MFC 32: Bitter Rivals are on sale now and available exclusively through the MFC Ticket Hotline at (780) 504-2024.

Meet Undefeated Light Heavyweight Prospect Lionell “Lonnie B” Thompson

Posted on | November 7, 2011 | No Comments

“Lonnie B” to make UK debut at EventCity Nov 12,on undercard of Fury vs. Pajkic.
London (7, Nov, 2011) Undefeated American light heavyweight prospect Lionell “Lonnie B”Thompson will make his United Kingdom debut November 12, on the Tyson FuryNeven Pajkic undercard at EventCity, Trafford Park (next to Trafford Centre) in Manchester, England. The 26-year-old Thompson (10-0, 6 KOs), who lives and fights out of Buffalo, New York, will be fighting outside of North America for the first time as a professional.

Rated as high as No. 2 in his division as a U.S. amateur boxer, Thompson was a five-time New York Golden Glove and three-time Empire State champion. Lionell also qualified and competed in the prestigious U.S. National Golden Gloves Tournament. As a member of Team USA, he boxed in Connecticut on ABC Sports, and in Romania in the Holden Belt Tournament. Lionell also capture gold medals at the Western Olympic Trials and East Olympic Trials.

Thompson, who is trained by pro boxer Ross Thompson (no relations) in Buffalo, is a graduate of Buffalo State College with a degree in Health and Wellness.

“Lonnie B” made his pro debut in 2009, stopping Zaid Malik in the opening round. Thompson has fought all over New York State, in addition to North Carolina, Delaware, Indiana and Montreal.

Hennessy Sports caught up with Lionell before he heads to the UK.

HS: Lionell how do you feel about fighting in the United Kingdom for the first time?

Thompson: “I feel good about fighting for the first time in the United Kingdom. The closest to England I’ve ever fought was in Romania when I was an amateur. Boxing fans over there are going to love me. I train hard and I’m always in top shape. I’m going to give British fans a brilliant night of boxing.”

HS: Are you excited to be fighting on a card headlined by Tyson Fury?

Thompson: “Yes, excited but not nervous. It’s a big show and great opportunity for me to be fighting on a show headlined by a great fighter like Tyson Fury. I was born to be a superstar. TV and big crowds excite me. I’m at my best when the bright lights come on. Fans there will get a chance to see an up-and-coming star, live and in the flesh, before I become a star.”

HS: What kind of style do you bring into the ring?

Thompson: “Fans can expect to see quick hands and quick reflexes. It’s going to be a one-sided fight, no matter who I’m in the ring with. I have excellent boxing skills and will execute our game plan to a tee. I guess, you can say, my style is a mix of Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Mayweather, Roy Jones Jr. and Terry Norris. I hit and don’t get hit. I come forward, can fight in the pocket, and do what I want to do in the ring. I have a hard jab, go to the body, good ring generalship and head movement, and can fight on the inside, too. I’m not cocky, just confident. I never worry about losing. The hard work is done in the gym and the easiest part is the fight.”

HS: Are you concerned about going overseas and fighting in a foreign country?

Thompson: “No. I train hard and I’ll be in great shape. I adapt well to anything, so I’m not concerned with the weather, air or anything over there. I’m ready to go.”

HS: Do you have a statement for British fans?

Thompson: “I want to tell them to get ready to see the next superstar. I’m coming to take over. Tyson Fury is a great fighter. I’m the next big thing in boxing. Get ready for me!”
