Artemio Reyes Upsets 2008 U.S. Olympian Javier Molina in Co-Feature

Catch the Replay on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME EXTREME®

NEW YORK (Oct. 29, 2011) – Middleweight prospect Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales won an eight-round split decision over veteran Ossie Duran by the scores of 77-75 two times for Gonzales and 78-74 for Duran. In the co-feature, Artemio Reyes scored the biggest win of his young career by upsetting 2008 U.S. Olympian Javier Molina by the scores of 78-74 twice and 77-75 in an eight round welterweight bout from Bally’s Grand Ballroom in Atlantic City, N.J.

In an extremely tight main event, Gonzales (15-0-1, 10 KOs), of Sacramento, Calif., threw crisper, cleaner punches in the early going. In a solid third round where Gonzales was able to successfully stick-and-move, he suffered a cut beneath his left eyebrow that didn’t seem to faze him throughout the fight.

By the middle of the bout, however, Duran (26-9-2, 10 KOs), of Paterson, N.J., began to stack rounds by pushing the action with constant pressure and a hard jab. He displayed his experience advantage over Gonzales by catching him with hard shots from odd angles.

Gonzales’ trainer Virgil Hunter had strong, inspiring words for his young fighter entering the sixth round. Gonzales, 27, responded by boxing and moving. He landed punches in combinations to stop Duran’s momentum.

To the pleasure of the crowd, the fighters fought the final two rounds as if they needed the points to win. At the final bell, SHOWTIME analyst Steve Farhood scored the fight 78-74 for Duran while boxing expert Antonio Tarver scored the fight a draw.

“We expected an all-out brawl coming in,” said Gonzales. “The 10-month layoff didn’t make it any easier. Virgil (Hunter) said I had to step it up those last three rounds and that’s exactly what I did. I listened to my corner and stayed compose and let my hands go first. I think it was a great victory tonight. I hired the best trainer in boxing in Virgil Hunter. We pulled it out.”

The opening bout featured the tale of two game plans: The quicker Molina (9-1, 4 KOs) of Norwalk, Calif., wanted to use his jab and box while the hard-hitting, slower Reyes (14-1, 11 KOs) of San Bernardino, Calif., wanted to apply pressure to keep Molina off his bicycle. However, Molina only dictated his game plan in round one before Reyes dictated the final seven sessions in a toe-to-toe thriller.

Molina snapped his quick jab and kept his distance for the first three minutes of the contest but capitulated to Reyes’ desire to close the space between them from the second round on. Molina tried to punch with the older Reyes – but with little efficacy.

Reyes smothered the shorter fighter and Molina could not shake Reyes’ pressure. With no room to work, Molina tried to brawl with Reyes but had no room to work. He threw ineffective arm punches with his oft-injured right hand paving the way for Reyes to dominate most of the fight.

Reyes’ father has been in a coma since a tragic car accident in 2008 left him in a vegetative state. “Fighting 4 Pops” is his life statement and those words are written into his trunks.

After his emotional win, Reyes said of the fight, “We trained hard, ridiculously hard. It was insane, man. I didn’t stop punching the entire time. We knew it was going to be a long fight, you know, eight rounds. It was a good fight. We trained hard.”

The telecast will replay on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME EXTREME and be available on SHOWTIME On Demand from Oct. 31 through Nov. 13.

Curt Menefee called the ShoBox action from ringside with Farhood and Tarver serving as expert analysts. Gordon Hall is the executive producer of ShoBox with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

DANNY DOWNES AND BEN ASKREN COMPETE IN THE LAST TWO BIG ROUFUSPORT BOUTS OF 2011

Posted on | October 28, 2011 | No Comments

Description: Description: Description: Description: Roufusport Logo - White

(Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA): It’s been quite a year for Roufusport. Nominated for the “Gym of the Year” at the 2011 World MMA Awards, the fight team will be represented on both the UFC and Bellator fight cards this Saturday, and they will be the last two big fights for the camp this year. At UFC 137, Danny Downes will look to get his first UFC victory against Ramsey Nijem, while Bellator Welterweight Champion Ben Askren will defend the strap against Jay Hieron at Bellator 56.

For Downes, his first foray into the Octagon was an extremely tough one, as he took on grizzled contender Jeremy Stephens on short notice in his last bout. In the end, it was a tough decision loss for the Irish fighter, but he proved his mettle by making it through the bout. In fact, Stephens caught the 25 year-old in a kimura arm-lock that had the crowd gasping. Now, Downes has the opportunity to possibly erase that memory from the minds of the fans.

“It’s important for me to prove that I belong in the highest level of MMA competition,” says Downes. “I got in this business to be elite, not to waste time and play games.”

Having a full training camp for this bout should make a difference.

“Camp was great. My opponent is a wrestler, so I worked a lot with my Olympian/NCAA champion Ben Askren a lot to get ready. And the fans can expect entertainment, a brutal knockout, and then a charming post-fight speech.”

Speaking of Askren, the undefeated welterweight will face what is probably the stiffest trial of his young career in “The Thoroughbred” Jay Hieron. A 26-fight veteran who has competed in both the UFC and Strikeforce, Hieron has a solid experience edge on the former NCAA wrestling champ. Askren, however, is unfazed. After sending Nick Thompson into retirement in his last scrap, the recent Roufusport import has a clear perspective on this Saturday’s fight.

“Jay Hieron is my toughest test to date, but I think I am more than prepared to handle him.”

It’s no secret that the ground is Askren’s domain, but he has been working on rounding out his game.

“I am just working on getting better and making myself a complete fighter.”

And the champ is very clear on his plans for his opponent this Saturday.

“Complete domination.”

Big 12 Bound, W Virg.Turnbull won’t look past this Season, Talks to Takedown

October 28, 2011 11:47 AM

IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference Board of Directors have voted unanimously to accept West Virginia University as a full conference member effective July 1, 2012. The Mountaineers will begin competing in the Big 12 beginning with the 2012-13 athletic season.

West Virginia is the second new member to join the Conference since it began in 1996 after the addition of TCU earlier this month.

“The Big 12 Presidents and Chancellors are excited to welcome another outstanding institution to the Conference,” said Burns Hargis, Chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors and President of Oklahoma State University.

Dr. James P. Clements
“The addition of West Virginia, while expanding the reach of the Big 12, brings an impressive institution with esteemed academics and a proud athletic tradition into the Conference. This is another step in building a strong foundation for the future of the Big 12.”

“The Big 12 is a perfect fit for West Virginia University,” said WVU President Dr. James P. Clements. “It is a strong conference that, like WVU, values quality academic and athletic programs, and has a great tradition of success. This is a very exciting time for WVU and Mountaineer nation. I am confident that the future of WVU athletics has never been more promising.”

West Virginia University, located in Morgantown, sponsors 17 varsity sports. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, football, soccer, swimming & diving and wrestling. Women’s sports are basketball, cross country, gymnastics, rowing, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field and volleyball. The Mountaineers also boast a co-ed rifle squad. The Big 12 sponsors every sport the Mountaineers participate in except rifle and men’s soccer.

“We are excited to add West Virginia to our exceptional lineup of Conference members,” said Big 12 Interim Commissioner Chuck Neinas. “They bring an excellent overall athletic program to the Big 12 and allow the league to expand into an area that boasts a passionate group of fans and alumni throughout its region.”

Since its inception 15 years ago, the Big 12 has won 42 team national championships and 492 NCAA individual crowns. In addition, more than 3,700 student-athletes have earned All-America First Team accolades for their play on the field with more than 500 being recognized with Academic All-America honors.

Beginning with the 2012-13 season it is expected that the Big 12 Conference will be comprised of 10 Universities – Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech and West Virginia. The Big 12’s footprint will encompass five states with over 36 million people. More than 4,100 student-athletes from across the United States and around the World compete annually in the 23 sports sponsored by the Conference.

Schedule
West Virginia Director of Athletics Oliver Luck has announced today the 2011-12 wrestling schedule, which features five home matches at the WVU Coliseum.

“Coach Craig Turnbull has continually put together one of the top schedules in the country and this upcoming season is no different,” says Luck. “Given the success of the team over the years, we are able to find top-notch opponents that want to wrestle against us to receive quality competition. We are looking forward to watching the team excel this season.”

The schedule is highlighted by two non-conference meets against Big Ten foes Penn State and Michigan State, ACC rival Maryland and NWCA foe, Rutgers.

“We believe we have put together a very competitive schedule that will meet our needs and have our guys prepared to be able to pursue all of their goals at the end of the season,” says Turnbull. “The schedule is not put together to ensure that we have the strongest win-loss record, although that is always our goal.”

The Mountaineers will begin their season, Nov. 6, in College Park, Md. at the University of Maryland Duals, followed by the Washington & Jefferson Tournament and the Navy Classic.

After their first three dates, WVU will take its annual west coast road trip where it will compete in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and the Reno Tournament of Champions.

“We will get out to the west coast twice this season with those two tournaments,” Turnbull says. “While we are out there, we will see many of the top teams in the Midwest along with many of the top west coast teams.”

In between their two west coast trips, the Mountaineers will travel to State College, Pa., for a highly anticipated dual meet against the Nittany Lions.

“The marquee matchup on our schedule is probably Penn State,” Turnbull says. “They are the returning national champions and will be ranked No. 1 in the country at the beginning of the season. Penn State is a great place to wrestle a dual meet. They value wrestling and they understand wrestling. They will sell Rec Hall out, and it is a great opportunity for our guys to wrestle some of the best wrestlers in the country.”

WVU’s dual meet schedule kicks into full swing on Jan. 6 with its first home matchup against the Terrapins, which is followed up a week later with a meet against Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich.

“Reigning ACC Champions Maryland will come into our gym, and that is a very good home match for us,” Turnbull says. “We will get into the Big Ten with a dual match at Michigan State.”

WVU will begin action in the Eastern Wrestling League with its dual meet against Bloomsburg on Jan. 21 and conclude conference competition with a dual meet against Cleveland State on Feb.19.

Annual meets against Clarion, Lock Haven, Pitt will be held at home, while a meet against Ohio is set to take place in Athens, Ohio.

The dual meet against the Panthers is always anticipated, and this year, it will be particularly important since Pitt is the defending EWL champion.

“The EWL is really challenging,” Turnbull says. “Pitts returns most of its team that won the league last year. First or second is generally the place we are, and this year, we would like that to be first. It is a very strong challenge with the team that Pitt is returning this year.”

The Mountaineer’s final two dates are the EWL Championships, which take place in Clarion, Pa., this season and the NCAA Championships, which will be held in St. Louis, Mo.

“The ultimate goal in putting our schedule together is that each one of our guys receives the preparation in competition and challenges throughout the year in order to place high at the NCAA Championships or winning a national championship at the end of the season,” Turnbull says.
