HASKINS AND LYON ARE MARKED MEN IN PRIZEFIGHTER

Posted on | October 6, 2011 | No Comments

Champs know that they are the men to beat in Liverpool Super Flys

Super-Flyweight title holders Lee Haskins and Craig Lyon say they know that there is a target on their chests as they enter the Prizefighter Super-Flyweight tournament on Wednesday 12 October at Liverpool Olympia, live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1 and also in 3D.

Haskins owns the British strap while Lyon is the English champion and both men are hoping to avoid a defeat like the one British Super-Featherweight Gary Sykes suffered at the hands of Gary Buckland in the semi-finals back in November.

Buckland stunned Sykes with a knockout inside the first minute and three weeks ago he double the dose by taking Sykes’ title from him on points at the Ponds Forge International Arena in Sheffield. Bristol’s Haskins took the Commonwealth title from Don Broadhurst on points in December 2009 and the 27 year-old knows that Broadhurst will be gunning for revenge.

“Of course he is going to want to fight me and beat me, but I’m ready for that,” said Haskins, who won the WBA Inter-Continental Bantamweight title in his last outing in July over in Morocco. “It’s good exposure and that’s why I’m in it. If I can beat three people on one night it’s great – it’s better than just one, plus I’ve been struggling to get fights.

“I desperately want to fight for a world title next year. Once I win Prizefighter I want to have another fight before Christmas and then hopefully it can be done against one of the champions.”

St Helens fighter Lyon claimed his English title just over a year ago and in his only defence was declared a technical draw when he suffered a cut in the third round of his fight with Josh Wale in February.

“The lads here with only a handful of fights on their records are probably the real favourites to win it because they have are closer to their amateur days,” said Lyon. “Their fights as pros have probably only been four rounds ones so they will be fast starters whereas me, Lee Haskins and Don Broadhurst have been doing eight and ten-rounders for a while. We train all the time to go the distance and pace ourselves so it is going to be a bit odd. But I’ve been working hard on the three-threes format and I reckon I’ve cracked it.”

Joining Haskins, Lyon and Broadhurst are Liverpool’s Mike Robinson, Merseyside’s third representative unbeaten 23 year-old Ryan Farrag, unbeaten fighters Nathan Reeve from Northampton and Leeds’ Terry Broadbent, and YouTube sensation Usman Ahmed.

Tickets for the Super Flyweights show at Liverpool’s Olympia on Wednesday 12 October are on sale now from Matchroom Sport on 01277 359900 priced £30 unreserved, £50 ringside and £100 VIP.

Dannie Williams a power broker in lightweight division

Posted on | October 6, 2011 | No Comments

Rumble Time Logo

ST. LOUIS (October 6, 2011) — Not only isn’t World Boxing Council (“WBC”) Continental Americas champion Dannie Williams the best kept secret in the lightweight division anymore, the southpaw is arguably the most dangerous 135-pounder in the world, recently breaking into the top 10 for the first time and shooting for the stars.

Co-Promoted by Rumble Time Promotions and DiBella Entertainment, the 27-year-old Williams has overcome numerous obstacles in his life en route to becoming a legitimate contender. No longer just a prospect, he has won 18 of 19 pro fights, 15 by knockout, and recently moved into the WBC ratings at No. 9.

At the request of his longtime promoter Steve Smith, Williams moved from the mean streets of St. Louis to Youngstown (OH). “Boxing has saved me,” the 2004 National Golden Gloves champion explained. “I turned my life around when I left St. Louis for Youngstown. I have some great people around me like (head trainer) Jack Loew, (promoters) Steve Smith, Blake Fischer and Lou DiBella, (manager/advisor) Sam Shapiro…my whole team. They really care about me and want to see me succeed.”

The only blemish on Williams’ otherwise perfect pro record was a loss by 10-round decision two years ago to Eloy Perez. Dannie, however, has been dominant in his last three fights, defeating Manuel Leyva (KO1), Oscar Cuero (DEC10) and Antonio Cervantes (KO4).

What separates the multi-talented southpaw Williams from other lightweight contenders is his pure knockout power. Fans watching his last fight on ESPN Friday Night Fights versus Cervantes got a first-hand look at Williams’ devastating power punching, realizing that he can crack with the best in the business. This sensational knockout was the No. 1 highlight on ESPN Sportscenter countdown.

“Dannie’s a fan-friendly fighter who can attract new, young fans that love to watch the violence in MMA,” promoter Smith remarked. “He just loves to knockout his opponent. Dannie has real power for a 175-pounder, never mind for a lightweight, and sometimes it’s frightening to watch him punch somebody.”

“Dannie Williams will be world champion,” Loew confidently predicted. “He has good hand speed, boxes well and can think in the ring, but he punches so hard. You have to be able to slow down your opponent to gain respect. That’s the key to having a little pop. Dannie won a lot of amateur tournaments, so he had to be a good boxer to do that, but what makes him so marketable is he’s a big puncher. Like Mike Tyson, fans love to watch a fighter like Dannie with that brutality of punching. He can hit a home run at any time and that brings a lot of excitement to boxing. Nobody who watched his last fight complained that it ended after four rounds. He deserves a shot because this kid is so exciting and, I know, Dannie’s ready right now to fight anybody in the top 10.”

Williams has some potential big-time name opponents in the lightweight division such as Brandon Rios, who Williams defeated in the amateurs, Robert Guerrero, Michael Katsidis and a host of others. None, however, are tougher tests than the ones Williams passed fighting his way out St. Louis.

“Boxing fans always like to see a knockout,” Williams commented. I can box and have speed. I train to go the distance, too, but I always want to knockout my opponent. I’m coming at you, setting them up – fast hand-speed jabs, hooks and feints – for a huge shot that, I know, will KO any 135-pound fighter in the world!. I’m in the hurt business and I’m trying to hurt you. I met with Lou DiBella last weekend and he said I have what everybody wants to see – knockout power. You either have it or you don’t, do it or can’t, and my power is always there.”

CUNNINGHAM v HERNANDEZ – JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED

Posted on | October 5, 2011 | No Comments

On Saturday night in Neubrandenburg, Germany, Yoan Pablo Hernandez was awarded the IBF Cruiserweight Title by split technical decision over 2-time champion Steve Cunningham of Philadelphia after Hernandez’s corner and doctor advised the referee to stop the bout in the corner after the 6th round.

Since the bout, in a release sent out by Sauerland Event, the Hernandez corner has attempted to take the focus away from the machinations that caused the stoppage and the score cards – with the judges voting for Hernandez being universally criticized by the media worldwide – which awarded Hernandez the belt, and have attempted to create controversy over the failure of the referee to stop the bout after Cunningham had been knocked down in Round 1, a move reminiscent of the “controversy” that some tried to create in the aftermath of Mike Tyson v Buster Douglas, Hernandez trainer Ulli Wegner is looking to divert attention away from the role played by the ring doctor Walter Wagner, who advised referee Mickey Vann that the fight should be stopped even though the cuts suffered by Hernandez were not bleeding. Cunningham responded to the tactics saying, “As soon as I read what Wegner was saying, I knew what it was – they want to take the focus off the way the fight was stopped. I am a true champion and despite the knock down, I was coming back to win that fight and they were not going to let that happen.”

In an AP report, Dr. Wagner is quoted as stating that he recommended that the Cunningham v Hernandez bout be stopped even though “the cuts weren’t dangerous but the blood could have run into his eyes and affected his vision. I think the head clashes that the referee felt were accidental weren’t entirely accidental. You can have different opinions there. Hernandez was at a disadvantage from the cuts, so I gave the recommendation.”

Let’s get this right – the doctor, who was observed at ringside cheering on Hernandez and was noted to have been keeping a scorecard together with a representative of Sauerland Event, advised the referee – who would be remiss not to take the advice of a physician – to stop the bout because, in his medical opinion (?), Dr. Wagner felt that Hernandez was at a “disadvantage”- even though the cuts ‘weren’t dangerous” – and the blood “could have” run into Hernandez’s eyes and “could have” affected his vision – even though it was clear that neither cut was bleeding when Hernandez arose from his stool?

Dr. Wagner proceeded to further question the judgment of the experienced referee Mickey Vann on the boxing (not medical) call about whether the clashes of heads were accidental or not? “Everyone knows that the referee is the one to make those calls, I am not a dirty fighter, never have been. When an orthodox and a southpaw fight, head butts are likely to happen, and with that cuts are likely also, but if the cuts were not causing a problem, the fight should have continued. The only person with a disadvantage was me, I was fighting against way more that Yoan Pablo Hernandez on Saturday night.” said Cunningham.

Dr. Wagner is no stranger to controversy – he was the ring doctor who was in the corner of Ulli Wegner-trained Arthur Abraham when Abraham was permitted to fight on against Edison Miranda, in spite of having suffered a broken jaw and with Abraham’s face being a mask of blood throughout the bout. This obviously was, in the humble and respected opinions of Herr Wagner and Herr Wegner, far less an injury than was suffered by Hernandez, as both argued that Abraham could continue but that Hernandez could not. “It’s really crazy. Abraham was allowed to fight on like a warrior despite his serious injuries and my fight was stopped due to two cuts that weren’t bleeding, I guess they liked their chances with Abraham over Miranda more than they did of Hernandez beating me” said Cunningham.

Cunningham then went on to recount how the night went, “In the first round I was feeling him out. I thought it was going well and then I got caught by a good shot and went down. I was down but not out. The knock down only me made me more determined. After the action started in the second I was back and went to work. I could feel myself getting stronger, sharper every round and I could feel him fading. I could taste a late round stoppage coming. But as you know, we didn’t get the chance to see who the best man was as they stopped it after the sixth round.”

Most neutral observers had Hernandez winning the first two rounds, with Cunningham taking control and winning Rounds 3 through 6. With Cunningham coming on and Hernandez fading, at the conclusion of Round 6, the referee asked the doctor to have a look at the cuts.

Doctor Wagner informed referee Vann that the fight should be stopped. The referee, who is in fact the final arbiter, was in a position in which he cannot, in good conscience, overrule what he takes to be advice provided by a neutral ring doctor based on what is believed to be medical opinion. Referee Vann asked “is that what you’re telling me” and then stopped the fight on the advice of ring physician Wagner. Hernandez walked to the center of the ring, without a drop of blood coming from either cut, and shrugged to Cunningham like he didn’t know why the fight was being stopped.

Hernandez wasn’t the only person confused by the decision, “I am a world champion, this is how I provide for my family and I have and always will fight to the end. Perhaps Wegner was out for some revenge after what I did to Huck, they wanted my belt and were willing to do whatever to take it” said Cunningham, before continuing “I have asked my lawyer to look what my options are, at the end of the day, no one should feel good about the way this fight ended. Hernandez and I share the same promoter and they should want to see this rectified. I have always been so proud to be the IBF Champion, they are an organization that stands behind their rules and does not get pulled into the shady politics and I respect them so much for that. I know they want their champions to earn the title, a rematch is truly in order.”
