settepani knocked outOn the non-televised undercard of the Hitz Boxing in Association with Banner Promotions’ Fight Night at the Horseshoe ESPN Friday Night Fights event on Friday, August 19 at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana, former world champion Montell “Ice” Griffin (50-8-1, 30 KOs) of Chicago notched his landmark 50th professional victory with a hard-fought unanimous decision over former world title challenger Deandrey Abron (15-10, 10 KOs) of Youngstown, Ohio. The two light heavyweights traded bombs throughout, but Griffin had the faster, more accurate hands. The scores were 80-72 x 3.

Secret Service agent and undefeated super middleweight Mike “Cujo” Kurzeja (5-0-1, 4 KOs) of Chicago fought his usual back-and-forth war on his way to a highly entertaining unanimous decision (40-36 x 3) over Sydney Ohio’s Jeremy Wood (1-4, 1 KO). Kurzeja’s aggressive style always makes for a good tussle and give respect to Wood, who clearly showed up with winning on his mind.

Russian prospect Evgeny Gradovich (11-0, 6 KOs), of Arapahoe, North Carolina via Igrim, Russia, outworked Providence, Rhode Island veteran Robert “Don’t kurzeja in action 2Lose” DaLuz, (13-39-3, 9 KOs) in a solid eight-round featherweight contest. Gradovich mixed his shots well to the head and body and won by shutout scores of 80-72 x 3.

Lafayette, Louisiana’s Chris Singleton (3-0, 2 KOs) dropped Toledo’s Gabriel Morris, (4-12-2) in the first round of their junior welterweight four rounder, but had to work hard the rest of the way to score a unanimous decision, as the capable Morris made it a fight. The scores were 39-36, 38-37 and 40-35.

Indianapolis featherweight Dwayne “The Ghost” Wisdom was impressive in his pro debut, as he stopped Chicago’s formerly undefeated Paulie Settepani (1-1, 1 KO) at 1:13 of round three. Awkward and powerful, Wisdom moved in and out firing haymakers and hitting pay dirt often enough to leave the unsuspecting Settepani out on his feet.

Rockford, Illinois junior middleweight “Bazooka” Joe Linenfelser (10-1-1, 6 KOs) outworked shopworn veteran Ruben “Modern Day Warrior” Galvan (27-18-4, 10 KOs) en-route to a four-round unanimous decision. The scores were 39-37, 39-37 and 40-36.

Seda_SilveiraThis past Friday, August 19, a delirious crowd of more than 3,000 people watched an exciting night of Universal Promotions, in association with Gary Shaw Productions, boxing at the Juan “Pachin” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.

In the main event, former world title challenger and Team Puerto Rico’s most experienced member, Cesar “Junito” Seda, Jr. (21-1, 15 KO’s) put on a strong display of boxing skill against Mexico’s Jose Silveira, dominating over 10 rounds of by scores of 100-90 in a 10-round bout.

Seda had control at all times. He imposed pressure, used his lateral movement and connected with heavy combinations to the face and liver of the Mexican. Silveira showed his manhood and sporadically attacked Seda, but without success because of Seda’s excellent lateral movement.

This was the Seda’s first fight Seda at 120 pounds.

“I felt good. This was a good fight for me because I stayed active and worked for 10 rounds, with a strong opponent,” said Seda, post-fight. “The next step is to follow the path that leads me to become a world champion at 115 lbs.I’m ready for big challenges.”

pedraza salcedoThe co-feature of the night was surprisingly action-packed as rising star José “Sniper” Pedraza (4-0, 3 KOs) scored an exciting, but dominant six-round decision over Pedro Salcedo (4-4, 2KO’s).

The judges saw Pedraza win, unanimously, by scores of 60-54 x3.

Pedraza hit Salcedo with strong combinations to the body and face.Salcedo showed his skills and heart by attacking Pedraza, but found little success against his superior foe.

The final round was particularly exciting, as Pedraza fired heavy combinations and wounded Salcedo repeatedly.

“I’m very happy for this achievement.Thank God we reap victories in professional boxing.Salcedo was a strong opponent who showed his skill and worked hard. This fight was great for me because I work six rounds for the first time. That experience helps me for future fights,” said Pedraza after the battle.

In other undercard fights, Josean “Pride of Ponce” Serra improved his record to (7-0, 5 KO’s) by knocking out a game Alberto Medina (0-7) in the fifth with a body shot.

In addition, Edgardo Rivera (6-1, 5 KOs) defeated Kelvin Galarza (5-2, 1KO) by TKO in the fifth round of their lightweight bout.

Bayamon’s Hector Rosario (7-1-2, 5 KO’s) won by TKO in the third (1:08) over Daniel Rodriguez (0-3). This fight was at a catch weight at 162 pounds.

Ennis Destroys Manning in Two Rounds

By Tony Penecale (Ringside)

Returning from a 10-month hiatus, Derek Ennis was brutally destructive in getting himself back in the win column, flooring the overmatched Todd Manning five times before the referee stopped in contest in the 2nd round.

Ennis, 156, Philadelphia, was last seen getting starched by Alphonso Williams in a bout he was controlling at South Philadelphia’s New Alhambra arena. It was a more focused Ennis who stepped in the ring and Manning, 158, Wheeling WV, never knew what hit him.

From the opening moments, the talent gap between the fighters was evident as Ennis was much faster and he took advantage, blasting Manning with combinations to the head and body. Ennis landed a sizzling right hand and Manning was down for the first time. A few seconds later, Manning found himself on the canvas again, courtesy of a right hand to the body. After valiantly pulling himself up, Manning ran into another series of punches, including a right hand that deposited him on the canvas again moments before the bell rang, saving him for the time being.

While many in the crowd curiously wondered why Manning was allowed to continue, they were happy to cheer the ring card girl one more time. Ennis made sure they wouldn’t see her again, as he finished the job shortly into the second round, flooring Manning two more times with body shots, finally forcing referee Hurly McCall to halt the contest.

Ennis now improves his record to 13-2 (10) while Manning falls to 6-4-2 (3).

In other bouts:

Anthony Gatt won a sloppy and ponderous decision over Kevin Hood in a heavyweight contest. In their first meeting in November, the four-round bout ended in a draw. Gatt had been idle since but Hood was on the losing end of two TKO defeats.

Gatt, 214, West Chester PA, found success early, clubbing Hood, 209, Lancaster PA, with a series of power punches and staggering him with a solid hook late in the round. Gatt was unable to build on his momentum and the bout became a sloppy affair with Gatt landing the harder shots and Hood countering with volleys of light, cuffing punches. By the 4th round, both combatants were dead tired, as they each tried to close the show with arm-weary punches.

The judges favored Gatt’s heavier blows, awarding him the decision by scores of 40-36 (twice) and 39-37. Gatt raises his record to 6-0-1 (4) while Hood runs his winless streak to four and is now 5-9-1.

Shannon Anderson wasted no time in dispatching John Fleming in just over a minute. Anderson, 176, Coatesville PA, attacked the southpaw Fleming, 176, Winston-Salem NC, at the opening bell and within seconds had him trapped in the corner where he unleashed a flurry of right hands. Fleming tried to fight his way out but after fielding two flush right hands to the head, he slumped to the canvas. Anderson attacked again and had Fleming back on the canvas within seconds, forcing Hurly McCall to save him from additional punishment.

Anderson improves to 4-1-1 (2) with the win while Fleming remains winless at 0-2.

In a bout of unbeatens, Coy Evans and Jason Rorie fought to a spirited four-round draw. Evans, 124, Philadelphia, boxed smartly in the opening round, countering the aggressive Rorie, 128, Greensboro NC, with straight right hands to the head and body. Rorie started asserting himself more in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, using his advantages in size and strength to back up Evans and land hard single shots. Rorie seemed to tire near the end of the 3rd round and allowed Evans to regain momentum and control the pace over the final stanza.

The three judges all differed in opinion with one seeing Rorie winning 39-37, with another tallying an absurd 40-36 in favor of Evans, while the deciding judge had it a stalemate at 38-38. Evans is now 2-0-1 and Rorie is 1-0-1 (1) and a rematch is a possibility.

The opening bout of the evening was a rockin’ affair as local favorite Travis Thompson, ignited the crowd with unanimous decision over Elisa Castillo. Thompson, 133, Pottstown PA, charged out at the opening bell, firing wild haymakers, and backing Castillo, 133, Bronx NY on his heels. Castillo was able to land several counter punches and Thompson rallied the crowd, slipping several shots, using the dip-low defensive style made famous by Pernell Whitaker.

More impressive than his defensive prowess was the offensive explosion Thompson started the 2nd round with, flooring Castillo with a big right hand. While still dazed, Castillo was able to avoid most of Thompson’s follow up attack and even landed a few shots of his own. Over the final two rounds, it was mostly Thompson throwing and Castillo catching, with both fighters receiving a standing ovation at the bell.

The judges all scored in favor of Thompson with verdicts of 40-36 and 40-35 (twice). Thompson improves his record to 3-2 (2) while Castillo drops to 2-3.

The card was promoted by Greg Robinson’s Power Productions Inc. The next show will be an outdoor event on Friday, August 1 at the Oaks Sports Extreme Complex with Rasheem Brown and Rashiem Jefferson in the co-features.

Dana White Shakes Up The Twitterverse With ESPN Feud

Posted on | August 21, 2011 | No Comments

Is Zuffa President Dana White just a clown without the face paint and the funny outfit?

By: Rich Bergeron

The fallout from the UFC’s recent blockbuster deal with FOX gave Zuffa President Dana White a chance to blast some of his haters on his Twitter page. Flexing his new network TV deal muscles, White chose to put another network in his sights: ESPN. Responding to a fan’s tweet about ESPN including a boxing knockout in their nightly top 10 plays list, White Tweeted:

“ESPN always hated us and now they hate us more now that we are on FOX. They canceled my int next week for UFC Rio Fuk ESPN”

Seeing as ESPN is owned by Disney, it makes sense that White’s brash attitude and rough language might offend the ownership. Still, it’s hard to believe that translates into the whole ESPN organization hating the UFC as a whole. This is just another example of White’s penchant for verbally attacking the media. Whether or not his interview cancellation had anything to do with the FOX deal, flying off the handle over it is pretty pathetic on his part.

The fact is ESPN was one of the earliest major sports networks to embrace MMA. For a company that regularly markets boxing on their long running Friday Nigh Fights series, their decision to cover MMA on a regular basis helped elevate the sport and Zuffa to a higher level of respectability. White is simply biting the hand that feeds him and acting like he is God’s greatest gift to mixed martial arts.

Maybe “The Baldfather” expects ESPN to kiss his ring now that he has the FOX deal to brag about. ESPN was probably never in the mix to land the kind of deal FOX wound up with anyway, though they do broadcast UFC events overseas. The bottom line is White’s little Twitter tirade amounts to biting the hand that feeds him. It’s another “We don’t need Coke, Coke needs us” moment.

The UFC definitely revolutionized the sport of MMA, but Dana White ought to remember that he would still be a boxercise instructor if it weren’t for the Fertitta brothers and their piles of money. Unfortunately the public seems to love his schtick and considers him to be the face of the organization. His ego obviously thrives on being the foul mouthpiece of the organization, but a little humility would do him and Zuffa good. The reality behind the Dana White myth is that he’s a sideshow and a circus clown who fell into a gold mine and started trying to make people think he invented gold. He’s quick to fly off the handle on anyone who doesn’t worship him to his satisfaction. The more powerful and successful the UFC becomes, the more credit he seems to get even though it’s his staff and the majority ownership’s investments that truly built the company into the powerhouse it is today. Zuffa’s success is not at all something White should be allowed to claim as his own. If anything, the organization is doing well in spite of White rather than because of him.

The most telling aspect of Dana’s Twirade is that he seemed genuinely upset that ESPN wouldn’t give him more face time. ESPN’s MMA Live show frequently discusses Zuffa happenings for the majority of the air time the show gets on the network. Guest analysts and interviewees are typically associated with the UFC or Strikeforce in some capacity. If the network really hates the UFC they have a funny way of showing it. The more likely scenario is they hate Dana White, and that’s not so hard to believe considering how the guy’s own mother feels about her famous son.

Undefeated Edwin Rodriguez Body Attack Stops Traietti in Two

WORCESTER, Mass. (August 20, 2011) – Hometown hero Edwin“La Bomba” Rodriguez remained unbeaten, stopping intra-state rival Chris Traietti in tonight’s Broadway Boxing main event, presented by DiBella Entertainment, in the 400th professional boxing show ever held at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Displaying more boxing skills and patience under for his new head trainer Ronnie Shields, Rodriguez outclassed a game Traietti (10-3, 6 KOs), who is an Iraq War veteran and college graduate.Edwin dropped a few right-handed bombs on Traietti in the opening round and a devastating right hand to Traietti’s ribs (left) left him unable to breathe properly and unable to answer the bell for the third.

“”That was my signature punch,” Rodriguez said about his damaging right to the body.“He’s a tough guy. I have a good trainer, Ronnie Shields, who worked with me on my jab and it was working good tonight. I want to fight for a world title soon.”

The 26-year-old Rodriguez, the reigning WBC USNBC super middleweight champion, is rated # 8 by the International Boxing Federation and #9 by the World Boxing Association, as well as #12 by the World Boxing Council and #13 by the World Boxing Organization.

Unheralded junior lightweight Ryan “Polish Prince” Kielczewski (11-0, 2 KOs) stamped himself as an action-packed fighter to watch, after belting James Lester (9-6) around the ring from the opening bell for eight full rounds. The fan favorite Kielczewski won an eight-round decision by lop-sided scores of 80-69 and 79-20 twice.

Ray Lopez: “Ready or Not, Here I Come.”

Posted on | August 20, 2011 | No Comments

Ray Lopez(left) will face Andrei Arlovski(right) on August 27th at ProElite

When Pro Elite announced a bout between former UFC Champion “The Pitbull” Andrei Arlovski and Ray Lopez as the main event for its August 27th event in Honolulu, Hawaii, many fight fans headed to their nearest laptop to look up the latter. “Who is Ray Lopez?” was the thought that came to mind for many. A quick scan of his record showed that he is a three-time King of the Cage veteran with a 6-1-0-1 record who has finished five of his six victims in decisive fashion, and is coming off a first round knockout victory in his last bout. Outside of that info…there just wasn’t a lot of info out there.

So…who is Ray Lopez? Ask, and ye shall receive.

The 24 year-old Lopez has a very eclectic background when it comes to his combat sports training. He grew up in fighting basically his entire life. In fact, his dad is a belt-holding martial arts instructor. During his adolescence, Lopez tried his hand at different sports. He played some football, but was deemed too violent for the gridiron. He then tried his hand at soccer, but, again, he was just too violent for the sport. Then came wrestling…and that didn’t work out either. The six-foot, 220-pounder was trying to find his niche in the professional sports world. And that’s when he discovered MMA.

Growing up, Lopez fancied himself a tough guy and did a lot of street-fighting. Eventually, though, he found his way to the Extreme MMA gym in Holland, Michigan, where he began to train with Gary Weighman and Andy Jamrog. It was life-changing, and there, he found his true calling.

In an interesting twist, Lopez actually started in cagefighting first before getting into professional boxing. After alternating wins and losses in the squared circle, he began to dabble in Muay Thai and judo, as well as boxing. Lopez has even made his way to Dan Severn’s famed training camps up in Michigan. He is intent on being as complete a mixed martial artist as he can be.

“I never got into fighting to be famous,” explains Lopez. “I’m not trying to get rich off it. I just do it because I like hitting, and I like getting hit.”

Now, Lopez has been given the biggest opportunity of his career, as he will face “The Pitbull.” Though Arlovski has faced some tough times recently, Lopez is taking the fight as seriously as he can. “To beat Arlovski, for me, it would mean a lot to me, just because of who he is. He’s one of my idols, and watching him fight helped get me started in MMA. I have a lot of respect for him. I never would have expected an opportunity like this, but whether or not I’m ready, it’s time to show the world who Ray Lopez is.”

As for the specifics of the fight itself, Lopez has his eyes wide open. “Every time that I think an opponent is going to try to take me down, he doesn’t, even if he’s a wrestler. With Arlovski, he’s got a background in standup and ground, so, really, it can go anywhere. So I’m ready for a war. I’m just going to be ready for my opportunity to strike.”

Fighting in Hawaii for the first time is a big deal to Lopez. “I would like to thank Pro Elite for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to show the Hawaiian fans my skill set. I’ve heard they are very knowledgeable, and love a good scrap. So I’m going to do my best to put on a great show for them.”

And if all goes as plans, when the night is over, fans won’t have to look up Ray Lopez to know who he is. He’ll have already shown them.
