Fight Night Announces Paul Gorman vs Anthony Leone for Co-Main Event for February 11th, 2012

Posted on | January 13, 2012 | No Comments

Lewiston, ME (January 12, 2012) – New England Fights! And Nick DiSalvo Promotions are proud to announce the addition of a bantamweight bout between Portland, Maine’s Paul Gorman (8-7) and World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC)/Bellator veteran Anthony Leone (9-4) to their February 11th Fight Nightmixed martial arts (MMA) event at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.

“The addition of The Academy’s Paul Gorman and Bombsquad’s Anthony Leone really caps off an incredible card made up of the top talent in the Northeast,” stated promoter Nick DiSalvo.  “Everyone knows that Paul Gorman is a super dangerous fighter that is capable of winning against anyone. Paul trains with the intensity of someone fully focused on making it to the next level.  As for Leone, he’s already been there as a veteran of world-famous promotions like the WEC and Bellator. This fight is going to be white hot.”

The Gorman-Leone bout was originally scheduled to take place on FightMaine.com’s January 13th, 2012 show that was cancelled due to multiple fighters succumbing to injuries in the final weeks leading up to competition. Fight Night was able to acquire the rights to the match by working closely with the event promotions company.

“Too often today in business and politics—and especially in fight promotions—people expel a lot of energy in working against one another,” stated Fight Night matchmaker Matt Peterson. “I serve in a political arena, so I understand how nasty it can get out there. The spirit that went into preserving this fight was the exact opposite of that.  The last-minute rescue of the Gorman-Leone matchup is an example of two promotions working together. I was proud to work with members of the FightMaine.com management team to save this bout and make sure that these two phenomenal athletes will still get a chance to face off against each other and receive a paycheck in the first quarter of 2012. When Gorman and Leone enter the cage on February 11th, it will be a real testament to what is possible when fighters and fans are put first.”

“It means a ton to me that my fight with Leone is still on,” stated Gorman. “I put a lot of hard work into not just this fight, but all of my fights and it’s always a major letdown when things fall apart. Unfortunately for the fighters it’s commonplace to have our hard work go down the drain when fights are cancelled for whatever reason, so to have my fight picked-up at the last minute is huge.”

Paul Gorman has been fighting professionally for over a half-decade against the toughest competition he can find. In his expansive professional career he’s competed in regions as remote as the Pacific and faced the likes of UFC-veteran Josh Grispi, WEC-veteran Rafael Rebello, and the top featherweight and bantamweight talent in the Northeast.  The Jay Jack trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Brown Belt has tapped out black belts in MMA competition and taken local champions into the deepest rounds of their careers. He’s been training consistently at The Academy under MMA pioneer Jack and his wife, Amanda Buckner, for the better part of a decade and is committed to reaching the highest levels of the sport.

As for Anthony Leone, he’s “been there, done that” and is fighting to return there as soon as possible. Leone fought in the Zuffa owned WEC prior to the organization being collapsed into the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The WEC was the world’s premiere organization for 135 and 145-pound fighters prior to the UFC’s adoption of those weight classes, so Leone has faced world-class talent and will be fully prepared for February 11th.

Gorman-Leone will be featured as the co-main event of a packed card of over 20 professional and amateur mixed martial arts fights. Tickets for Fight Night start at only $25 and can be purchased online at www.thecolisee.com or by calling 207.783.2009.

 About Fight Night I
The inaugural event of “Fight Night,” a mixed martial arts (MMA) promotions company, will feature a Main Event professional welterweight bout between undefeated, fast-rising Maine prospect Ryan Sanders (2-0) from Young’s MMA and top Northeast middleweight Dan Keefe (7-2) out of Wai Kru/IntenZe. Promoter Nick DiSalvo has booked the Androscoggin Bank Colisee for “MMA Fight Night I,” which was the venue for the 1965 Heavyweight Boxing Championship rematch between Sonny Liston and Muhammad Ali. The 4,500 capacity arena is the premiere venue in the Lewiston/Auburn, Maine region. The facility has added over $4 million in renovations in the last four years including food court/taverns and other amenities to provide fight fans with a top-flight experience.

RISING WELTERWEIGHT STAR SHELDON WESTCOTT SIGNS WITH AGGRESSION MMA

Posted on | January 13, 2012 | No Comments

Top Canadian 170-pounder to make AMMA debut Feb. 11th

Edmonton, Alberta (Canada): Aggression MMA, one of the top MMA promotions in Canada, today announced that the promotion has signed rising welterweight star Sheldon Westcott to compete on its upcoming February 11th event. The name of Westcott’s opponent will be released shortly. As also recently revealed, also scheduled to compete at this exciting event is top Canadian welterweight Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford, rising star Tyson “The Man of” Steele, UFC vet Victor “The Matrix” Valimaki, and well-known Canadian competitors Tim Chemelli, “Big Bad” Stephen Beaumont, and Markhaile “Showtime” Wedderburn.

This event will take place at the Shaw Conference Center on Saturday, February 11th. Tickets are available over the phone at (780) 426-SOLD, or online at www.TNTTickets.ca. Many more exciting fights will be announced in the coming weeks!

“We are proud and excited to bring on a talent like Sheldon,” stated Aggression MMA Co-Owner Moin Mirza. “Having a talent like him join our roster shows that we are committed to growing MMA in Canada, and developing the best talent our country has to offer.”

Sheldon Westcott (5-1-1) is considered to be one of the most talented Canadian 170-pounders competing today, and is poised for a breakout 2012 campaign. Most recently, he competed in back-to-back fights against well-known veteran Thomas “Wildman” Denny. In their first bout, the 27-year old native of Alberta fought “Wildman” to a split-draw, which demanded an immediate rematch. This past June, Westcott got what he wanted, securing a dominant unanimous decision victory utilizing superior ground control in a highly-entertaining affair.

Now with Aggression, this blue-chip prospect is ready to leave his up-and-comer status behind and enter into the rarified air of a bona fide championship threat.

“We are very excited to showcase a fighter like Sheldon in our stacked welterweight division,” said Aggression MMA Co-Owner Harvey Panesar. “We feel that Aggression can provide the platform for all our fighters to showcase their talents and achieve their goals, and that includes Sheldon.”

Stay tuned for more details on this exciting upcoming Aggression MMA fight event! For more information, please visit our website at http://www.aggressionmma.com/

BRANDON GONZALES FIGHT OFF DUE TO INJURY; REPLACED WITH TWO UNDEFEATED PROSPECTS, GUY ROBB vs. JOEL DIAZ JR. ON SHOBOX

Posted on | January 12, 2012 | No Comments

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 12, 2012) – In what was already set to be an exciting showcase of the top young talent, on the Jan. 20 edition of ShoBox: The New GenerationTom Brown, Goossen Tutor Promotions matchmaker, has added a special 8-round super featherweight attraction between two undefeated prospects Guy Robb and Joel Diaz Jr. after Brandon Gonzales pulled out of his fight against Caleb Truax due to a leg injury.  The fight, which will be held at the Pearl at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nev. and broadcast on SHOWTIMEat 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast), is headlined by a World Championship bout between World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantamweight world champion Rico Ramos(20-0, 11 KOs), who takes on WBA interim champion and two-time Olympic gold medalistGuillermo Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 KOs).

Robb (7-0, 3 KOs), a 22-year-old out of Sacramento, Calif., didn’t step into a boxing gym until the age of 17. Short of two years into training, he competed in an amateur tournament and went home with a bronze medal and a No. 4 national ranking in his weight class.  His short-lived amateur career lasted only 25 fights before turning pro in October of 2010 where he scored an impressive first-round KO in his debut.  Now, after fighting six times in 2011, he will arrive onShoBox with a chance to shine on a nationally televised fight card.

His opponent will also be looking to extend his undefeated streak on his first TV appearance. Diaz Jr. (6-0, 5 KOs), an aggressive, 19-year-old power-punching southpaw had a much more storied amateur career than Robb, fighting to a record of 85-10 before knocking out Rene Torres with a left hook in the second round of his pro debut in July of 2010.   In his second pro fight, Diaz would be taken the distance for the first – and only – time in his short career, winning a 4-round UD over Hugo Ramos.  In 2011, he fought four times, finishing all of his opponents with fan-pleasing first-round KOs.  In his most recent victory in November of 2011, Diaz fought a battle-tested veteran of 59 fights in Manuel Sarabia.

With both fighters supremely confident with aggressive styles, they will become each other’s toughest test to date.

Opening the ShoBox telecast, undefeated Matthew Villanueva (6-0-1, 6 KOs) of Burbank, Calif. will fight Mike Ruiz (8-1-1, 3 KOs) of Fresno, Calif. in an 8-round junior bantamweight bout that is sure to open the broadcast in typical ShoBox high-octane fashion.

“I want to thank The Palms for being the host of this very intriguing World Championship bout.  The winner immediately jumps to the top of the class,” said promoter Dan Goossen.  “Although Rigondeaux has a better knockout percentage then Ramos, Rico is known for one-punch knockout power, and I don’t believe anyone at this weight can take it, including Rigondeaux.

“As for the other televised bouts, both will be exciting, aggressive fights and each of the fighters have their work cut out for them in their matchups.”

In a non-televised undercard bout, Javier Molina (9-1, 4 KOs), a 2008 U.S. Olympian will try to get back in the win column in a 6-round welterweight bout.  There will also be two other 4-round bouts featuring heavyweights and jr. middleweights.

Doors for the event open at 5:30 p.m. with the first bout at 6:00 p.m. and the televised portion of the card beginning at 8:00 p.m. (all times PT). Tickets for the event are priced at $54 and $29 and are available at ticketmaster.com and at the Palms box office.
