THOMAS “CORNFLAKE” LAMANNA SCORES KNOCKOUT IN ARKANSAS TO STAY PERFECT AT 6-0

Posted on | December 20, 2011 | No Comments

MILLVILLE, NJ (December 20, 2011)—This past Friday night in Batesville, Arkansas, Jr. Middleweight prospect Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna scored his sixth consecutive victory with a second round stoppage over Ivory Joyner to keep his perfect mark intact.

LaManna hit Joyner with a hard one-two combination that sent the Arkansas native down and the fight was waved off at 1:16 of round two.

LaManna of Millville, NJ lifted his record to 6-0 with four knockouts and is already back working for his next fight.

“It was good to fight outside the area and get the win.  It’s always good to fight on the road and gain experience”, said the twenty year-old LaManna

“We have three fights lined up for Thomas to begin the year”, said LaManna’s Father/Manager Vinny LaManna.

“Thomas will be back on January 19th in Staten Island then we have February and March dates that are tentative.  To have him get nine fights in his first thirteen months as a pro is about where both he and I want him to be”

Melson Hits the Jackpot; Knocks out Lugo in Three!

Posted on | December 20, 2011 | No Comments

Atlantic City, NJ (December 20, 2011) – Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson of New York City scored his seventh victory in as many bouts following a sensational knockout of Daniel Lugo last Saturday evening at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.

The West Point graduate outboxed his hard charging opponent over the first two frames, landing cleanly to both the body and head. In the third, Melson dominated Lugo, before unloading a straight left followed by a hard right hook which put him down for the count at 2:01. However, his most powerful moment inside the ring succeeded the bout.

After being declared the winner, Melson took the microphone and notified the crowd that he’s donating his entire purse to Justadollarplease.org in support ofAmerica’s first Clinical Trial using Umbilical Cord Cells. His post fight speech, which details how the trial could aid millions of Americans with severe Spinal Cord Injuries, clearly moved those in attendance.

He shared for the first time that the trial was scheduled to take place in January at Austin, TX’s Brackenridge Hospital, but unfortunately had to be rescheduled for the summer because of insufficient funds. Melson closed his speech by sharing that he’d continue donating his future fight purses to assist the trial.

Upon receiving applause from the audience, Melson responded with “your clapping is nice, but I don’t need claps…I need you to go toteamfighttowalk.com, click on the link to donate to justadollarplease.org and give one dollar.”

Fans quickly made their way over to Melson and made donations to help support the trial.

“This was a night I’ll never forget,” said Melson. “With the help of Johnson and Johnson matching my donations 2:1 after every single purse donated, I’ve raised about $30,000. “With the knockout punch and support of those in attendance, I feel like I hit the jackpot twice.”

Melson’s next bout is scheduled for January 21 at New York City’s Roseland Ballroom.

In association with Justadollarplease, Melson created Team Fight to Walk, whose mission is to raise awareness within the boxing community about the importance of stem cell research for spinal cord injuries. Team Fight to Walk is comprised of Melson, former two-time cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, title contender DeAndre “The Bull” Latimore, Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana, Hector Camacho Jr., 2008 US Olympian Shawn Estrada, and prospects Sid “The Messenger” El Harrak, Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin, Frank Galarza, Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien, Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Samir and Delen “Sniper” Parsley.

ANDRE WARD AND VIRGIL HUNTER: THEIR YEAR OF SUCCESS SHOULD LAND THEM FIGHTER AND TRAINER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

Posted on | December 20, 2011 | No Comments

LOS ANGELES, CA (Dec. 20, 2011) – It has been a tremendously successful 2011 for Andre Ward(25-0, 13 KOs), who after a twenty-six month journey is now the Super Six World Boxing Classic champion; the WBA champion; the WBC champion; the Ring magazine champion and the No. 1 Super Middleweight in the world.

Right there with him, is Ward’s crafty veteran trainer and godfather of 18 years, Virgil Hunter, who like Ward is soft spoken, but filled with wisdom.  Hunter recognized the talent and drive in Andre from the moment he walked into his gym.  Virgil began training the 9-year old Ward and guided him to a gold medal in the 2004 Olympics.

Andre always believed that Virgil was the man who was going to elevate his game to the highest of levels and we’ve all been witnesses to just that. This past Saturday, December 17, as Ward was presented with three championship belts and the Super Six Cup, those beliefs were confirmed more-so.

Ward decimated the gritty British fighter with a unanimous decision at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Already named Sports Illustrated’s Fighter of the Year, Oakland, California’s Ward had one word for his impressive evening and undefeated run through the two-plus year tournament: “Supernatural.”

“These are all great fighters. That’s why you don’t hear me talking badly about them before the fight. I know what I’m getting into. I just want to be a little bit better on the night of the fight.”

Earlier this year in May, Ward put on another destructive performance against former middleweight titleist and one of the hard-hitting favorites to win the tournament in Arthur Abraham.  Ward scored a near perfect shutout against the former champion in a lopsided victory that would send him to the final.

Hunter’s work alongside Ward has earned him to be named “Trainer of the Year” with Andre’s one-sided run and the culmination of his last two bouts in a tournament filled with high-profile, top-level competition, all directed by his trainer.  The man currently stands above everyone else since Andre’s upset of Mikkel Kessler and has had Andre prepared to finish his opponents with sheer dominance on his way to obtaining the WBA, WBC, Ring championship belts, along with the Super Six World Boxing Classic title.  These are tremendous accomplishments by both fighter and trainer, especially when you throw in the fact that Hunter started with Ward when he was a nine year-old and has built him into an elite world-class fighter from scratch, taking him from US Olympic Gold to a decorated world champion as a professional.

Roger Mayweather deserves credit for Floyd Mayweather, but Floyd fought only once in 2011.  Freddie Roach, the winner the past two years, has recently struggled with Manny Paquiao against Juan Manuel Marquez in his last bout and most recently Amir Khan.

There are other trainers that could deserve this recognition also, but for utter dominance of their fighters, Virgil Hunter stands alone in 2011.

Hunter, also trains Brandon Gonzales, Karim Mayfield, Michael Dallas, Marlow Moore and Heather Hartman.

Quotes from Monday’s press conference are below:

“VICIOUS” VICTOR ORTIZ

“My team kind of said it all.   I don’t need to say a whole lot.   I prepare very well.   I know I’m up against a tough opponent.  I captured the world championship and went for the best.  I’ll leave everything in the ring and bring home the victory once again.  I don’t hate anybody.  I respect all of them.  We’re here to box and fight and make a great show on February 11th.  I’m ready.

“I’m being counted out once again.  Once again, not the best of the best.  Once again, I’m too nice.  You know what, I’ll show you February 11th why Andre Berto belongs where he’s at and why I’ve made him belong there.  I don’t need to say anything more than that.”

ANDRE BERTO

“I have put in the time and worked very hard to get to where I am.

“This is a tremendous opportunity.  I’m ready to get it on.  I’ve had to improve my game.  I’ve had a hard, tough training camp and just have to stay focused and get the job done.

“I’m hungrier than ever.  I predict a win.”

RICHARD SCHAEFER (CEO of Golden Boy Promotions)

”We are definitely starting out 2012 with a big bang.  ‘Ortiz-Berto II’ is boxing at its best and the single biggest fight that can be made outside of Mayweather-Pacquiao.

“We are all very excited.  This is the first time a premium channel fight is being supported like a pay-per-view event.  SHOWTIME is planning to do a Fight Camp 360.

“Their first fight may be ‘Fight of the Year’ and both guys want to set the record straight.  The rematch might be 2012 ‘Fight of the Year.’  Both of these world champions are guaranteed to put on a great show.

The 147-pound division is the one with all the biggest names and we have two of them fighting each other.

“We’re expecting a sellout.“I really want to thank Stephen Espinoza and SHOWTIME for stepping up the way they have. This will be an incredible night of boxing.’’

STEPHEN ESPINOZA (Executive Vice President, General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports)

“I’m very excited and proud to have this as my first official press conference.  I’m more excited and more proud that this is the first fight that I acquired in my position as Executive Vice President (and General Manager) of SHOWTIME Sports and Event Programming. This fight is the most compelling, most exciting, most highly anticipated fight available.  That’s why it was my No. 1 priority from the very first minute I accepted the position with SHOWTIME…to make sure that this fight appeared on SHOWTIME.

“Not only am I excited and proud to have this as SHOWTIME programming but all of my colleagues are excited as well.  We will be receiving the support of our parent company, CBS and all of its platforms, which includes the free television network, CBS Interactive and other CBS Sports Networks. All of these plans will be developing more as time goes forward.

“When they are deserving, we’ll be airing what used to be non-televised undercards on SHOWTIME EXTREME before the telecast begins on SHOWTIME.  This will be an opportunistic play for our network based on multiple factors.  SHO EXTREME has blossomed into one of the strongest cable television and sports programming outlets. SHO EXTREME is where we replay all our boxing and MMA events, and the rest of our award-winning sports programming such as Inside the NFL, Inside NASCAR, The Franchise.

“This is going to be an amazing fight between two of the brightest young stars in the sport and that’s yet another reason why it was important for SHOWTIME to acquire this event.  These are two world-class athletes and just as importantly, if not more importantly, two world-class young men, very articulate, very personable and they are exactly the type of young men that SHOWTIME wants to be in business with.  I’m looking toward to February 11th.  It’s guaranteed to be a great.’’

ROLANDO ARELLANO (Ortiz’s manager)

“We at Team Ortiz will convey nothing but respect to Andre Berto.  We know he is a great fighter.  We know that he has the courage of a warrior with a great team.  We know that he is hungry and that his thirst for revenge is present.  We clearly understand all those facts.  The only way we know how to respect him, our sport and the fans is to prepare for this fight like never before.

“I will pledge to our fans that Victor will raise his standards in this fight like never before.  If Andre Berto thought he ran into a freight train last time, this time he will feel the (hurt) of a nuclear bomb.’’

TONY MORGAN (Berto’s Trainer)

“Berto was just out of it the last fight.  He tried to come in light.  He was completely deficient.  We found out after that he was anemic, but no excuses.  Victor fought his butt off.  I’m not making excuses.  I’m just saying Berto wasn’t 100 percent.  This time, we’ll be 100 percent and we’ll see the true outcome.  I think we knock him out.  I just hope for a good fight.”

Margules: Pulling Donovan George Was Hardest Decision of my Career

Posted on | December 20, 2011 | No Comments

donovan george banner

Leon Margules, President of Warriors Boxing and co-promoter of super middleweight contender Donovan “Da Bomb” George (22-1-1, 19 KO’s), says pulling George out of his fight against Librado Andrade was the hardest decision he’s had to make during his career as a promoter… but it was definitely the right one.

George was scheduled to face the tough veteran Andrade (30-4, 23 KO’s) in a 12-round IBF super middleweight title elimination fight Saturday night at the Froilan Lopez Baseball Field in Cozumel, Mexico, but a huge discrepancy in the size of the ring forced Margules to make a very tough call.

“The contract said (event promoter) Golden Boy will use their best efforts to get a 20’x20′ ring. The ring was exactly 15′ inside. I’ve never even heard of a ring that small. So, we talked about it as a team and decided to pull the fight. The IBF stood behind us. Donovan’s father and fiancée thanked me for standing up for them. Raul Jaimes and Robert Diaz from Golden Boy were very understanding. Even Andrade’s trainer said he would have done the same thing.”

Margules says George would have fought anyway because it’s his nature, but part of his function as promoter is to care about his fighters’ well-being. “This was the kind of thing any father would do for their kid. When I’ve got a fighter who is supposed to fight in the middle of the ring and there is no middle of the ring because it’s smaller than any ring I’ve ever even seen – it’s not right to push him out there against a world-class guy who thrives on phone-booth warfare. That’s not doing my best to protect my fighter and give him an even chance at winning every fight.”

“I do not believe Golden Boy Promotions would do something like this intentionally, but relied on others to handle obtaining an adequate ring for a world-title elimination fight”, says Margules. “The fact is, Golden Boy are very competent promoters. They told me a local promoter made the mistake. I give them the benefit of the doubt. As a company with tremendous integrity, all they need to do now is figure out how to make it right for both fighters.”

While a decision like this is not made easily or often, Margules says the congratulations and recognition he has received from other boxing insiders has been reassuring. “I haven’t heard one competent boxing guy tell me I did anything but the right thing. When my fighter gets to the venue on fight night and says ‘How am I going to fight in that ring, I thought you told me the ring would be 20 feet?’ he’s already mentally handicapped. He would have fought if we asked him to, but there was no way I was going to let him. This is the biggest fight of his life and he’s worked very, very hard to get here. There’s no way I’m going to let him risk it all in a fight when the other guy has an unfair advantage based on styles. That is why I insisted on a 20 by 20 foot ring in the contract. I would protect my fighter the same way if it ever happened again.”
