HATTON WARNS BROOK: TRAINING AND BECOMING A DAD IS TOUGH
Posted on | January 20, 2012 | No Comments
Manchester man says Kell’s preparation may suffer in big fight build-up
Matthew Hatton has warned Kell Brook that becoming a father for the first time will hurt his quest to win the battle of Britain’s best Welterweights.
Hatton and Brook clash at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on March 17 live on Sky Sports, where the spotlight will be on the unbeaten Sheffield star in his biggest headline show to date. Hatton believes that the pressure to perform coupled with becoming a Dad for the first time could be too much for the 25 year-old.
Both men are due to have baby girls in the build-up to the fight – with Kell’s partner Lindsey due in mid February and Hatton’s partner Jenna early March. But while Hatton has already experienced training for a fight while become a father, he believes Kell’s plans could be thrown into chaos as he enters parenthood.
“Jenna and I have gone through it all before so there will be nothing new there for us,” said Hatton. “But for Kell it’s a new experience becoming a father for the first time. It’s absolutely amazing of course, but it’s a real shock and it takes some getting used to. It can be a really difficult period and it’s hard to stay focussed on the training. But sometimes in life there are more important things than boxing and being a father is one of them. When you bring kids into the world you have to provide for them so it’s a motivation for the training and the fight as you are doing it for their future.”
Jenna is due to give birth to a baby girl on March 4, just 13 days before he meets Brook in the huge Welterweight clash at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield, live on Sky Sports. Hatton has been in this situation before when Jenna was carrying their son Jack as he was preparing to face Craig Watson for the Commonwealth title in Manchester in 2008.
“It wasn’t a great performance against Craig,” admitted Hatton. “Jack was about three months old then so it was a difficult time and it definitely affected my performance – and it will have an effect on Kell.”
While Hatton has learnt how to juggle preparing for fatherhood and preparing for a major fight, Brook faces the same scenario for the first time and Hatton says it will be a tricky time for the unbeaten Sheffield star.
“Our baby girl is due on March 4, but Jack was two weeks late. If she goes two weeks over with the new baby it’ll be the day after the fight, so she’s sweating a bit. Jenna’s a massive support for my career and she represented Great Britain and England in a number of swimming events so as an athlete herself, Jenna knows the dedication involved and the pressures you are under ahead of competing. She was never a boxing fan before we met but she loves her boxing now and she’s more keen on Saturday Fight Night than me to be honest!”
Jenna has left her part-time job as a learning mentor for kids in Salford to go on maternity leave, and as she gets close to her due date, Hatton said he may be tempted to include her into to his preparation.
“She’s quite big now, I think she’s up to about Cruiserweight so we’ve been having a laugh about that around the house!” said Hatton. “I’m into camp now, roadwork is underway and I start sparring next week so I had a good Christmas but it’s great being back in the gym and we’re just going to start upping it and upping it as the weeks go on, but the start has been fantastic.”
Tickets priced £30 (tiered), £40 (tiered), £60 (tiered/floor) and £100 (ringside) are available from the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield Box Office on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.
VIP tickets have now sold-out.

The night of fights are being promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions.
Here’s what each fighter had to say on Thursday:
RICO RAMOS:
“A lot of people are doubting me for this fight but who cares? It’s me and him in that ring. I came to keep that title. I’m the WBA champ and I will stay the champ.
“It’s hard work to stay the champion. I put a lot of hard work and dedication into this. I’m still moving, man. I’ve got my son, he’s two, that keeps me motivated. I’ve got my fans, my friends, my family, it all keeps me motivated.”
GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX:
“Of course I should be the betting favorite. What should I expect from Ramos? He has to worry what to expect from me!
“I’m very happy for the opportunity to win a title with less than 10 pro fights. I’m ready for the challenge.”
GUY ROBB:
“Boxing came into my life at a perfect time. I was getting in a little trouble but I was on the verge of getting in big trouble. I was introduced to Ray Woods and I was intrigued by who he was (Diego Corrales’ stepfather and original trainer).
“Boxing was fun when I started. But I didn’t like getting tired and beat on so I realized I had to give it 100 percent. It took over my life.
“This fight will be action-packed. He’s aggressive but I plan to beat him up. It should be a brutal fight.”
JOEL DIAZ JR.:
“I don’t want to rely on just one punch. Yeah, I can brawl but I can box. If I have to stay in his face and throw punches all day, fine. But I’m ready for anything.
“I can’t wrong go with this opportunity. I took it on two weeks notice. I’m going to show everybody what I got. With all the people watching, you don’t want to look bad.”
MATTHEW VILLANUEVA:
“I’ve got to get this victory, that’s first. But if I can do it in big fashion, a KO, even better. I believe I can knock him out.
“I’ve sparred Ruiz before and I believe I got the best of him. It was my reach, my aggression, my power. And now, I’m even more conditioned than I was when we sparred.”
MIKE RUIZ JR.:
“This is do or die. It sucks when you don’t put your hand up at the end of a fight (like my last outing). I’ve gotta do this.
“I feel good. I feel I’m two or three times better than when we sparred the first time. The sparring sessions were pretty even but now I’m sharper.”

New Jersey (January 20, 2012) – A date has been set for the highly anticipated WBC world championship fight between, Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan (37-4-1, 27 KOs) and Japan’s undefeated WBC bantamweight champion, Shinsuke Yamanaka (15-0-2, 11 Kos). The showdown will take place on April 6, 2012 inTokyo, Japan. On the line will be Yamanaka’s WBC Bantamweight title.
Promoter Gary Shaw confirmed, “The date has been agreed upon for April 6. Darchinyan will have to travel into unfamiliar territory and show the world why he’s one of the best fighters walking the earth. Capturing a world title in three divisions will put Vic in the history books as one of the greatest.”
Darchinyan, determined to make history stated, “I’m going seize this opportunity the WBC has given me with everything I got. My heart and soul will be poured into this training camp and I’m going to be in the best shape of my life. My team and I are ready for war! Nothing is going to stop me from bringing home that third world championship.”
Darchinyan’s manager and advisor Elias Nassar went on to say, “I want to thank Gary Shaw for putting this fight together. He works hard behind the scenes and needs to be commended for his efforts. Yamanaka is a young hungry fighter, but I believe Vic’s experience and power will be the keys to him being victorious. I want to also thank the WBC and Team Yamanaka for giving Vic this opportunity. Team Darchinyan is ready to go.”
