Former Contender Star Headlines 14th Card at Patriot Center
Fairfax, VA (January 16, 2012) – Northern Virginia’s Jimmy Lange (37-4-2, 25 KOs) will defend his World Boxing Union (WBU) junior middleweight title against veteran Ruben Galvan (27-20-4, 10 KOs) of Hammond, Ind., as the Main Event of the February 11, 2012 card at the Patriot Center. Sponsored by Valcourt Building Services, the Jimmy Lange Boxing event will feature three world title fights, with tickets available for purchase at all Ticketmaster outlets.
Lange, a star on season one of The Contender, is riding a six-bout winning streak and has headlined all 13 previous pro boxing events at the George Mason University venue. The popular fighter is known for his trademark toughness, captivating fighting style and the ability to box or brawl equally well. Lange’s headlining shows have consistently drawn an impressive fan base while providing a showcase for rising local prospects and top veterans. In his last bout, he captured the WBU title with a crowd-pleasing six-round TKO over Raul Munoz at the Patriot Center on September 10, 2011. The turning point came in the fifth round with Lange’s solid right to his opponent’s chin. Lange’s left hook in round six took him down, and he finished Munoz by knocking him down two more times en route to his 25th victory by knockout.
Next up for Lange is Galvan, a Chicago-based Mexican American fighter boasting more than 50 pro bouts, who has never shied away from tough competition. Nicknamed the ‘modern day warrior,’ he has faced such notables as Jorge Paez, Paul Spadafora, Dmitriy Salita, Zab Judah, Vernon Paris and current WBC middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. over his career. In his last fight, he lost a 10-round decision to Paul Delgado, in Atlanta on December 12, 2011.
The card also features two additional world title bouts – Mike “No Joke” Stewart against Joe Wyatt for the vacant WBU welterweight belt and WBC middleweight champion Tori “Sho Nuff” Nelson of Ashburn, Va., facing Vashon “Lady V” Living for the vacant WIBA women’s middleweight crown.
The rest of the undercard will feature two dominant local fighters, both undefeated. Chantilly, Va. junior middleweightZain “Tiger” Shah will face his toughest test to date with highly regarded “Lightning” Harry Joe Yorgey, while junior welterweight Todd “White Lightning” Wilson of Fairfax, Va., vies for his 12th win opposite Fernando “The Whip” Basora. A heavyweight battle between pro debuting Duane Mobley of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Dennis Benson of Norfolk, Va. is also scheduled.
Doors will open at 6:00 pm, with the first fight scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm. All bouts are subject to change.
Tickets, priced at $35, $50, $75, $125, $200, $300 and $500 (plus applicable service charges), can be purchased through all Ticketmaster outlets including the Patriot Center box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com/ and via Phonecharge at 703-573-SEAT, 202-397-SEAT and 410-547-SEAT. Gunn Wishes Roy Jones, Jr. ‘Happy Birthday’; Asks For Fight
Posted on | January 16, 2012 | No Comments
Former IBA Cruiserweight champion and reigning world heavyweight bare knuckle boxing champion Bobby Gunn recently discussed coming back into the squared ring and fighting one last time with the gloves on.
The Celtic Warrior (21-4-1, 18 KO) last stepped in between the ropes in July of 2009, when he suffered a TKO loss to Tomasz Adamek for the IBF Cruiserweight title. Through his boxing career Gunn faced much adversity and controversy, and following the Adamek fight, he hadn’t planned on making a return to the gloved sport.
“I have seen much corruption and politics in boxing, and it has really taken away from what the sport used to be about,” said Gunn. “The only way I would make a return to the ring is for the chance to fight Roy Jones Jr. He is a true champion and a legend, and it would be a great honor and privilege to go to battle with him.”
Regarding having the opportunity to fight Roy Jones Jr., Gunn stated, “I’m far from the best in the world, but I was in the mix with the best, and I never been much of a talker. The bottom line is that I will fight, and I will go to anybody’s back yard and fight them; that has never been a problem in my career. I have been involved in a lot of controversial fights, but at the end of the day I’m a fighter, and if a fight makes sense, I’ll do it.”
BKB title defense in late February or early March, but Gunn was adamant about accepting an offer from Jones if it was presented.
“If this fight materializes, it would be a fight for fans,” said Gunn. “Jones is a warrior and I know we would fight a war. He’s a great fighter, and I don’t know if I could win a decision over him, but I can promise that Roy Jones Jr. would never forget the fight.”
At 43-years-old, Jones Jr. (55-8, 40 KO) has still remained active inside the ring, fighting twice in 2011 (1-1). Through his career Jones Jr. displayed incredible skill, winning numerous world titles in four different weight classes.
If this fight ever materializes and becomes a reality and not just talks, it will be a fight that Roy will never forget. I absolutely know I would not win a decision, but I can promise the fight would not go the distance. It will be a fight that fans will not forget for a long time to come.”
Although this fight may be just a pipe dream at this point, if it does happen fight fans will be in for a treat. With all of the disappointing fights of 2011 and the ongoing drama encircling the boxing world, the sport desperately needs a fight featuring two warriors who will leave it all in the ring and throw hands for the sake of fighting, and nothing else…not a seven digit payday or endorsements, but fighting because that is what is inside of them, and ultimately to see who the better fighter is on that night.
Yes, boxing needs Gunn vs. Jones Jr. to happen, to reignite the excitement that has slowly been fading away.
Gunn finished with “Happy Birthday Roy…take me as your next fight.”

January 16, 2012 – Huntington, New York – Star Boxing’s light welterweight sensation, Chris Algieri (12-0, 6 KO’s) looks to remain undefeated when he returns to the ring, January 28, 2010 against Atlanta’s Curtis Smith (10-5, 5 KO’s). The fight takes place in Algieri’s hometown at the Paramount Theatre in Huntington, New York.
When asked about his training camp Algieri stated, “Training camp has been fantastic. I’ve been sparring with Ajose Olusegun (30-0, 14 KO’s) who’s one of the best fighters in the world. He’s a southpaw just like Smith so I couldn’t ask for a better sparring partner. My trainer Keith Trimblehas come up with a few different game plans being that we don’t know too much about Smith. Come fight night I’m going to listen to my corner and execute those game plans. We are about two weeks away from fight night and I’m feeling great.”
A sellout crowd is expected when Algieri faces Smith in his hometown of Huntington, New York. The rising star Algieri continued, “The Paramount Theater is right in my back yard and it was a great success when I fought there last time. Joe DeGuardia is a great promoter and I’m please with his decision to bring me back to Huntington. I’m looking to put on a great show for my fans who’ll be there supporting me.”

Del Valle facing tough challenge this Saturday
Posted on | January 16, 2012 | No Comments
Luis ‘Orlandito’ del Valle training in December at the Juan “Popo” Guzmán Gym in Cupey Alto, Puerto Rico.
This week, undefeated super bantamweight (122 lbs) Luis “Orlandito” del Valle (14-0, 11KO’s) is finishing up preparations in Newburgh, New York for his bout against José Beranza (34-21-2, 26 KO’s), to be held January 21st, 2012 at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City.
Beranza, who is well respected and considered a tough rival, is just coming off a win against Christopher Martin, who was until then undefeated in his previous 25 matches.
Raymond Rivera and ‘Orlandito’ del Valle
Raymond Rivera, Orlandito’s trainer and manager said: “We’ve been working very hard in Puerto Rico and Newburgh ( New York ) getting ready for the fight. It’s gonna be ’round by round’, very smart as always.”
“He’s a great fighter,” said Del Valle about Beranza. “Other prospects and great champions haven’t been able to defeat him, but we are more than ready for this challenge and to bring another triumph for my island.” The Bayamón native is part of ‘Team Puerto Rico’, a collaboration between promoters Gary Shaw Productions (GSP), DiBella Entertainment (DBE), Universal Promotions (UP) and Warriors Boxing (WB).
As a professional at the featherweight division (126 lbs.), del Valle won the New York State title after defeating veteran Pascal Rouse, and won the WBA’s regional title, the North American Boxing Association’s (NABA) after defeating Vietnamese fighter Dat Nguyen (17-1, 6KO’s at the time) by unanimous decision on the eve of New York’s Puerto Rican Day Parade.
This event is part of Dibella Entertainment’s ‘Broadway Boxing’ series, in which the main fight will feature fellow Boricua and junior welterweight (140 lbs.) Gabriel ‘Tito’ Bracero (18-0, 3KO’s) who will take on former world champion, DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley (37-19-1, 22KO’s).
