Cote vs Herrera postponed

Posted on | January 12, 2012 | No Comments

Montreal, Thursday, January 12th 2012- It is with regret that InterBox announces that its February 3rd 2012 boxing event scheduled to take place in Quebec City must be postponed.  Undefeated IBF 140 pound Intercontinental champion Pier-Olivier Cote has been informed by his doctor that he must immediately cease training for an undetermined period of time while doctors perform a battery of tests.  Cote was preparing to fight IBF World #6 rated 140 lbs boxer Mauricio Herrera in the Main Event that was due to be broadcast live on the popular SHOWTIME series ShoBox: The New Generation.

“We are less than a month out of the most important fight in Pier-Olivier’s career and he could not train adequately in the gym. He wasn’t feeling well.  I really do not want to speculate what could be wrong with him until he undergoes the necessary medical tests.  The first doctor he saw told him he has to stop training and rest.  Until we know more we are following his recommendations” states Cote’s trainer Mr. Francois Duguay.

InterBox President Jean Bedard is disappointed for boxing fans across the world.  This is the first time InterBox has to postpone an important fight, but the health and security of all InterBox athletes is of the utmost importance to him.  “My primary responsibility is to protect our athletes.  We had a very bad experience in the past with health issues related to Lucian Bute and we certainly do not want to repeat this same error.  We await the results of Cote’s medical exams before reevaluating the situation.  Hopefully it is minor and we can sit with Thompson Boxing Promotions and SHOWTIME to discuss another date” states Jean Bedard.

Pier-Olivier Cote is equally disappointed with this sudden turn of events.  “I was really looking forward to fighting Herrera on February 3rd.  This is the first time in my 18 fights that such a situation arises. I will follow the recommendations of the doctor and undergo every test that I have to.  My goal right now is to get better and return stronger than ever.  I would like to thank my promoter for supporting me during this difficult time”.

This week’s USA Wrestling Story Ideas

(more detailed information available)

  1. 2008 World champion and Olympian Clarissa Chun hungry for more gold – Hawaii native Clarissa Chun had a breakthrough year in 2008, winning a World gold medal and placing fifth at the Olympic Games at 48 kg. She has continued to excel, making two more World Teams, with a 2011 World fifth place. One of the veterans on Women’s Team USA, Chun is seeking to be the first U.S. woman to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling.

  1. World champion and soldier Dremiel Byers has 3 World medals but seeks Olympic gold – Dremiel Byers, North Carolina native and member of the Army World Class Athlete program, won a World gold in 2002, a World silver in 2009 and a World bronze in 2007 at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. He also made the 2008 Olympic team but fell short of a medal. Byers remains No. 1 in the USA with eyes focused on London and another chance for an Olympic medal. An interesting fact – Byers, who serves in the Army, was born on September 11.

  1. Will Chun or Bernard be the first two-time U.S. Olympian in women’s wrestling – Clarissa Chun and Ali Bernard were teammates on the 2008 Beijing Olympic team in women’s freestyle, both placing fifth. Women’s wrestling was added to the Olympics in 2004 with four weight classes and no U.S. woman has made two teams. Both Chun and Bernard are No. 1 in the USA going into 2012 Olympic Trials process. Can they become the first repeat team members?

  1. Son of Olympic coach, Reece Humphrey seeks his own Olympic glory – 2011 U.S. Freestyle World Team member Reece Humphrey is adding to a family legacy. His dad, Jim Humphrey, was a 1977 World silver medalist in freestyle, and head coach of the 1988 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team. Both were stars at Ohio State. A two-time University World medalist, Reece was ninth at the 2011 World Championships at 60 kg/132 lbs. Reece, an Indiananative, enters the Olympic year at No. 1, and looks to get a medal of his own.

  1. “Flying Squirrel” inventor Ellis Coleman seeks spot on the Olympic Team – One of the most popular sports videos in 2011 was the Flying Squirrel move from U.S. Greco-Roman star Ellis Coleman during the 2011 Junior World Greco-Roman Championships. Illinois native Coleman jumped over top of his Iranian opponent, landed and threw him for three points. Captured on Romanian TV, the video had over 4.5 million views on YouTube. Coleman dropped in weight and is a top Olympic hopeful at 60 kg/132 lbs. where he won titles this fall at the Sunkist Kids International and the New York Athletic Club International.

KELL BROOK VS. MATTHEW HATTON – PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Posted on | January 12, 2012 | No Comments

Kell Brook: This fight has been a long time coming but I am just so pleased that we’re going to get it on – I want to prove on March 17 that I’m the number one Welterweight in Britain. Matthew is a proven fighter and as tough as they come and the Hatton’s have done so much for boxing. But this feels like my big night and it’s a dream come true to be headlining the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield. I remember watching Johnny Nelson and Ryan Rhodes fighting in The Full Monty back in 1997, and now it’s my turn to be the big draw – I can’t wait.

Matthew Hatton: I always knew that Kell and I would fight. I’ve got nothing but respect for Kell and there’s no doubt that he’s a real talent, but I am peaking at the right time and we’ll see just how talented he is on fight night. There’s local rivalry there with the War of the Roses but for me, this is truly a fight with worldwide significance as we are two of the best Welterweights in the World. I want to prove that I am the number one Welterweight in Britain but talk is cheap and on March 17 we will have a definite answer.

Eddie Hearn: This is the sort of fight that I love to be involved in – a classic British battle between two great fighters. I fully expect this to catch the imagination of fight fans and the general public and really be something very big when we get to fight night. We talked to World champions for Kell but nothing that was put on the table excited me as much as this fight.

Ray Hatton: The fight was talked about a year ago but that was too soon. Kell is a fabulous talent but he’d been too inactive. He’s been impressive in his last fights and Sky Sports see a winner in him so the time is right now for this fight to happen.

Hatton’s trainer Bob Shannon: Matthew will be in great shape on March 17 and this is a fight that will be won by who gets their tactics right. I know Kell well and I will live and breathe Kell Brook from now until fight night. He is a proper talent but this is a real test to see just how talented he is.

Brook’s trainer Dominic Ingle: Bob is right – this fight is all about the tactics. Kell has Plan A and that’s to win, so Matthew will have to have Plan A, B and C to cause Kell problems. But I’m very pleased Matthew has taken the fight, a lot of other fighters would have turned this down and gone for a World title fight. But he recognises that this is a massive fight, Bob has got him in great shape and I am excited that we are getting it on.
