ANGELO DUNDEE:

Legendary Boxing Trainer Angelo Dundee Remembered

ONE OF ANGELO DUNDEE’S LAST INTERVIEWS:

Statement on the passing of Angelo Dundee By Boxer Jimmy Lange

We’ve lost a great human being whose contributions reached far beyond the world of boxing.  I had the privilege and honor to have Angelo working in my corner for many of my fights over the past six years.  To me he was a friend, confidant and a great boxing mind.

I’m glad that I was able to talk with him on a regular basis and we recently discussed my upcoming fight.  His advice was always inspiring and encouraging to me.  He always seemed to be correct in his analysis.

I will miss him dearly but he will always be in my heart and in my thoughts.  My prayers are with him and his family.  May God bless him and bring him peace.

Jimmy Lange

The Assassin faces Psycho as Bellator Returns to Mohegan Sun March 30

Posted on | February 3, 2012 | No Comments

Plus, Saunders, Baker, Foster and in Stacked Welterweight Tournament Quarterfinals

CHICAGO, Ill. (February 3, 2012) — Bellator Fighting Championships returns to Mohegan Sun Arena on March 30 for Bellator 63: The Assassin vs. Psycho. The Friday night affair will feature the quarterfinals of the Bellator Season 6 Welterweight Tournament, along with a host of preliminary fights featuring some of the best East Coast talent the sport has to offer. Tickets for the event go on sale at 10 a.m. EST on Saturday, February 4 and are available through Ticketmaster.com or at the Mohegan Sun Box Office. Tickets are priced from $30-$70.

The event will broadcast LIVE starting at 8 p.m. EST on MTV2 and in commercial-free HD on EPIX. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. EST, with the first fight scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. The preliminary card, featuring the area’s top local talent will be streamed LIVE and FREE around the world on Spike.com starting at 7 p.m. EST.

The night will be highlighted by Karl “Psycho” Amoussou (@KarlAmoussou) and Chris “The Cleveland Assassin” Lozano as the two vie for a spot in the welterweight semifinals. The Frenchman, Amoussou is known for his tenacious style and desire to finish every fight, leading to 11 finishes in his 13 career wins. For Lozano, the Cleveland Assassin looks for another shot at the Bellator title after coming up short last year against eventual tournament winner Douglas Lima. While Lozano should be a familiar name to Bellator fans after competing in the previous two welterweight tournaments, the evolution Lozano has made over the last half year should make “The Cleveland Assassin” one of the most dangerous fighters inside the Bellator cage.

“After the last tournament, I knew I needed to grow, so I decided to make the move to Greg Jackson’s,” said Lozano. “Over the last months, I have just elevated my game by leaps and bounds. Every day I’m surrounded by some of the best fighters in the world, and it has made me a better fighter. It’s controlled chaos. I’ve really gotten back to some of the things that made me so dangerous, and I can’t wait to show off all the training and hard work this March.”

“I don’t care who I fight in the upcoming Bellator Welterweight Tournament,” said Amoussou. “I’m going to rock the Bellator welterweight division and destroy every fighter that stands in front of me. I don’t care where you train or who you are, if you are in my way to the belt, I feel sorry for you.”

Former Bellator Welterweight finalist Ben Saunders (@BenSaundersMMA) returns and will take on Bellator newcomer Raul Amaya in quarterfinal action. Saunders tore through the Bellator Season 5 Welterweight tournament with a TKO victory over Chris Cisneros and a submission victory of Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Luis “Sapo” Santos, but fell short against tournament winner Douglas Lima in the finals and now Saunders is poised to make another run at the title. Amaya enters the tournament with a spotless 9-0 record and will be looking to stay perfect on his way to the finals.

Brian Foster (@BrianFoster170) enters the tournament riding a four-fight win streak, including two victories with the UFC. A true finisher in every sense of the word, Foster is already making big plans for his Bellator career.

“I’m getting that belt,” Foster said. “I want to fight the best. I want to fight Ben Askren and take home that belt.” Standing in his way will be David Rickels (@TheCaveman316), who holds an impressive 3-0 record inside the Bellator cage.

Long time Bellator veteran Bryan “The Beast” Baker (@bryanbeastbaker) is making the drop to welterweight and will try his hand at 170 lbs. when he battles Carlos “Indio” Pereira. Fighting almost exclusively out of Brazil, Pereira brings a wealth of experience to the Bellator cage, and should be a force within a loaded welterweight tournament.

Originally slated for a tournament spot, “War Machine” Jon Koppenhaver was replaced by Lozano after the troubled welterweight encountered legal issues that prevented him from entering the tournament.

“Mohegan Sun has been a second home to us throughout this company’s history, so I’m thrilled to be returning on March 30,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. “Top to bottom, this is one of the deepest welterweight fields we’ve ever assembled. This tournament is stacked with experienced fighters that are still in their primes, so we should be in for a great night of fights.”

FRAMPTON TO DEFEND COMMONWEALTH BELT IN SHEFFIELD

Posted on | February 3, 2012 | No Comments

Belfast man chief support on March 17 blockbuster card

Carl Frampton will make the second defence of his Commonwealth Super-Bantamweight title as the chief-support bout on the undercard of Kell Brook vs. Matthew Hatton at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on March 17.

Frampton delivered a punch-perfect performance in his first defence on Saturday (January 28) with a stunning seventh round knockout of Kris Hughes at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Barry McGuigan’s protégé moved to 12-0 as a pro in front of a sold-out east London crowd and the 24 year-old will fight in front of the biggest crowd of his career so far on March 17 before Brook and Hatton meet in their blockbusting Welterweight clash.

“It’s a wonderful bill for Carl to be fighting on,” said McGuigan. “The arena will be full of proper discerning boxing fans who will be eager to see Carl in the flesh. We are anxious to keep him busy this year to solidify his position as the most exciting Super-Bantamweight in Britain and he is chomping at the bit to be involved in this massive night for British boxing.”

Also on the undercard, former British Welterweight champion Lee Purdy will hope to get back on track against Nottingham’s Adnan Amar. Purdy claimed the British strap with a fine fifth round stoppage win over Craig Watson at the M.E.N Arena in Manchester in April and then repeated that feat in a rematch in Watson’s backyard of Oldham three months later. He faced Colin Lynes in his second defence at York Hall in November with a chance to claim the Lonsdale belt for keeps, but Lynes tore up the form book to take the belt on points.

John Ryder steps into double figures as a pro on the night, taking on Alistair Warren in an eight-round middleweight clash. Ryder, 23, picked up his sixth win inside the distance on the Frampton-Hughes undercard with a second round stoppage of Mariusz Biskupski taking his unbeaten run to 9-0. Standing in the way of the Islington man’s perfect ten is Huddersfield’s Alistair Warren (8-1-1), the 24 year-old who fought for the WBC Youth Super-Middleweight title in November 2010, losing to Hugo Kasperski.

Amateur star Scott Cardle makes his professional debut at Lightweight on the night, while unbeaten Dudley Middleweight Ryan Aston faces Barnsley’s Lee Noble and Sheffield Heavyweight David Howe also features.

Tickets for Kell Brook vs. Matthew Hatton with Scott Cardle’s debut on the undercard priced £30 (tiered), £60 (tiered/floor) and £100 (ringside) are available from the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield Box Office on 0114 256 5656 or online atwww.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk

£40 tickets and £150 VIP tickets have now sold-out.

Undefeated Heavyweights Nearly Come to Blows at Weigh-in!

Abdusalamov vs. Rodriguez Heating Up

Tensions rose and a scuffle broke out between heavyweight prospects Magomed “Mago” Abdusalamov (12-0, 12 KOs) and Pedro Rodriguez (8-0, 6 KOs)at todays’ Superbrawls weigh-in for tomorrow’s (Friday, February 3) ESPN Friday Night Fights broadcast from theTexas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel in Las Vegas.

The two undefeated big men will meet in a potentially explosive eight-round televised feature attraction tomorrow night.

“This is typical Russian/Cuban rivalry that goes back to amateur boxing for many, many years,” said Superbrawls co-promoter Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing.

Abdusalamov was the 2005 and 2006 Russian amateur champion at super heavyweight and Rodriguez is a former member of the Cuban national team. “These two countries are always at the top and they’ve learned to despise each other and yet respect each other. You won’t see a Russian give any ground to a Cuban and vice versa. It’s a matter of national pride.”

Lewkowicz was forced to step in and separate the two giants when the publicity staredown led to forehead contact and then pushing.

“Magomed is extremely confident in himself and his power and Rodriguez made it clear he plans on exposing him tomorrow night,” continued Lewkowicz. “I think they both want to let the other one know they’re in for a surprise tomorrow. Only one of them is right!”

Thankfully for Lewkowicz, cooler heads prevailed and no punches were exchanged. He wasn’t so lucky in 2005 during the buildup to his former fighter Sultan Ibragimov’s fight against Lance “Mount” Whitaker.

Lewkowicz stepped in to stop a pushing match between Ibragimov and Whitaker during a press conference at Gallagher’s and when the punches started flying, he took most of them on his chin and was knocked out cold in such spectacular fashion he made the front page of the New York Daily News and was splashed all over television.

“You’d think I would have learned my lesson,” laughed Lewkowicz after the conference.

###

Superbrawls will be topped by a 10-round light heavyweight main event between Colombian powerhouse Edison “Pantera” Miranda and South Africa’s WBC #6, WBA #13, and WBO #14-rated Isaac “Golden Boy” Chilemba, and also feature two up-and-coming warriors in the eight-round co-main event: Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (14-0, 11KOs) against fellow undefeated Hylon Williams Jr. (15-0, 3 KOs).

Topping the all-action undercard will be “can’t miss” Puerto Rican super middleweight prospect Roberto Jose Acevedo (2-0, 1 KO) in a four-round showcase fight against Las Vegas resident Velvet Malone (0-3).

Other bouts scheduled include a noteworthy six-round super featherweight tussle between Igrim, Russia’s undefeated Eveny Gradovich (11-0, 6 KOs) and Las Vegas’ Robert Osiobe (11-3-4, 6 KOs); a four-round junior welterweight match-up between Vegas residents Cameron Kreal (0-0-2) and Jesus Gutierrez (1-0, 1 KO); and Puerto Rico’s Juan Carlos Velasquez (10-1, 5 KOs) in a six-round super featherweight bout against TBA.

Tickets for “Super Brawls” are priced at $25 and $50 and are available atTicketmaster, any Texas Station rewards center or at Stationcasinos.com/concerts. A few VIP seats are available at a price of $100. Please call (954) 985-1155.
