Inaugural ‘Fight To Ireland’ Event, Savannah, Georgia March 17th
Posted on | January 6, 2012 | No Comments
The World Boxing Federation recently introduced the Gaelic/Celtic title for boxers with roots in Gaelic and Celtic nations, and now the WBF has announced “The Fight To Ireland”, an event that will support the newly created regional European title, and launch a way for American Professional boxers to earn the right to defend or challenge for Gaelic/Celtic titles in Ireland.
Promoted by Alex Beadle, President of the Georgia Boxing Association, the debut “Fight To Ireland” will be staged on March 17, St. Patrick´s Day, in Savannah, Georgia, where the city hosts the second largest St. Patrick´s Day celebration outside of Ireland and draws in the region of 600.000 spectators and national media coverage.
“This is a great opportunity for Irish American/ Celtic fighters to compete for the opportunity to fight in their home country” said Beadle.
“Irish-American fighters have contributed greatly toward early American boxing history and we are forever grateful. It is an honor to promote a title that embraces the heritage of some of the most feared fighters in history. It is our goal to finale “The Fight to Ireland” each year on St. Patrick’s Day.”
The idea to create the new title comes from WBF Irish Republic Representative David Walshe, who added:
“The criteria to qualify for an Irish title restricts many non-Irish-based boxers the opportunity to fight for what is seen in their eyes as a very important title because of their Irish lineage.
The WBF Gaelic/Celtic Championships, however, includes hundreds of boxers all over the world and gives them a chance to box for an Irish-connected title.”
Alex Beadle is currently working with WBF North American Coordinator Alan Santana on which fighters will contest the inaugural Gaelic/Celtic titles on St. Patrick´s Day in Savannah.

Light Welterweights II to be aired in 3D by Sky Sports
The first Prizefighter of 2012 at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton on February 11 with the Light Welterweights II has completely sold-out.
Fans without tickets can watch the show live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1 and also in stunning 3D and Matchroom Sport have assembled “the best line-up in the tournaments history” as the 23rd edition of the groundbreaking event hits the Midlands for the first time.
Unbeaten stars Dale Miles and Tyrone Nurse lead the way alongside former British champion Barry Morrison, English Welterweight king Adil Anwar and major title challengers John Watson, Young Mutley, Dean Harrison and Mark Lloyd.
“I think this is the best line-up we’ve had in Prizefighter so far,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Every one of the eight quality performers in the mix on February 11 will believe they can win and that promises to make it a special night in front of a packed crowd at the Civic Hall.”
Before the action gets underway there are two Prizefighter Prospect contests as unbeaten Matchroom Sport young guns Ryan Aston (Middleweight, 4-0) and Tommy Ghent (Welterweight, 2-0) look to further their respective winning pro records.

‘Irish’ Micky Ward training ‘The Wolf’ Unbeaten light welterweight prospect Levan Ghvamichava
Posted on | January 5, 2012 | No Comments
CORK, Ireland (January 5, 2012) – Irish boxing manager Gary Hyde announced today that he has come to an agreement with “Irish” Micky Ward to train his hot prospect, light welterweight sensation Levan “The Wolf” Ghvamichava.
Ghvamichava (6-0, 5 KOs), who is a native of Georgia living in Belfast, will relocate in February to Lowell, Massachusetts, where he will train under the guidance of three-time Fight of the Year participant, Ward, whose life was portrayed in the Academy Award winning movie, The Fighter.
“I am delighted we have Micky Ward on board,” Hyde said. “He has a lot of valuable experience to share with Levan, whose style of fighting is very similar to Micky’s. ‘The Wolf’ is a throwback fighter who loves nothing more than going into the trenches, just like his new coach, and fighting toe-to-toe. Micky has been approached by a lot of fighters who wanted the benefit of his coaching and experience, so I am very happy that Micky has chosen to work with us.
“Levan is a six-time Georgian Senior champion, European silver medalist, and one of the leading 140-pound division amateur fighters in the world the past few years. I have been in talks with some of the leading promoters in the United States who are very keen on signing Levan. When he makes his US debut, sometime fairly soon, he could be fighting on a major undercard.”
In 2011, Ghvamichava won all six of his pro fights and he is already fighting in scheduled eight-round bouts. Levan is one of the highest ranking fighters in the world for a fighter with relatively so little pro fights. In his last fight this past October in Scotland, he knocked out former European and Italian champion Guiuseppe Lauri (51-8, 32 KOs) in the second round.
“I’m looking forward to working with Levan and Gary,” the popular Ward commented. “Levan looks like a talented fighter with a very, very bright future. We’ll get him good sparring at my gym (Chelmsford, MA), as well as the West End Gym in Lowell, and also take him to some gyms in Boston. There are a lot of young fighters around here who will be good sparring partners for Levan. I can’t wait to get started.”
Hyde, president of Nowhere To Hyde, also manages a stable of other undefeated fighters such as WBA Interim Super Bantamweight Champion Guillermo “The Jackal” Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 KOs), undefeated British welterweight prospect Mark Heffron (5-0, 4 KOs) and light middleweight Dee “Wealthy” Walsh (1-0). Hyde plans to sign more fighters in 2012 and make Lowell his U.S. base.
