Williams Unfazed By Late Change, Says He’ll Crush McPhilbin On Jan 13th

Posted on | January 3, 2012 | No Comments

British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams is in bullish mood, following the news that he will now defend his coveted Lonsdale Belt against Bulwell, Nottinghamshire’s Shane McPhilbin on the 13th January at York Hall.

Just before Christmas William’s original opponent, Tony Conquest, was forced to withdraw due to illness, which opened the door for Midlands Area Champ McPhilbin to step up to the plate for a crack at the big one.

Speaking earlier today Williams clearly had long time friend Conquest ‘s plight in mind, as he said  “First and foremost I hope Tony gets better soon, I was really looking forward to us fighting each other again, as I’m sure he was.”  Before adding, “I’m sure he’ll get his chance again.”

The Streatham based Champion then changed tack and spoke briefly about his preparations, “I’m a hundred and ten percent ready for the 13th, it doesn’t matter to me who they put in front of me, Johnny (Eames) and Barry (Smith) have been pushing me, working me hard and honing my skills for any eventuality.

Had some great sparring over Christmas with Mitchell (Balker), Menay (Edwards) and my new gym mate Paul David (English Super Middleweight Champion).

Paul’s my new main sparring partner. He’s very awkward, very cagey. It would have been great to have had him here when I was preparing for Rob Norton.

As I said here at the TRAD TKO I have a great team around me, got plenty of great sparring partners and it’s all good, it’s almost perfect and the guy that’s fighting me now is gonna get crushed.

I know nothing about him, as far as I’m concerned he’s just an opponent for me to beat up, I’m the Champion and I’m gonna stay the Champion, I’m gonna look so good on TV as I beat him up, yeaaah.”

Leon ‘Solid’ Williams versus Shane McPhilbin,  for the British Cruiserweight title, headlines Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry Promotions first event of the New Year, which takes place at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, on Friday 13th January 2012 and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky platform Channel 456 & Virgin 546)

Tickets, Standard Seated – £40 and Ringside SOLD OUT for Williams vs. McPhilbin are available now on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com. Tickets are also available direct from the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA.

BROOK READY FOR SHEFFIELD BLOCKBUSTER; March opponent to be unveiled at press conference next week

Posted on | January 3, 2012 | No Comments

Kell Brook will make his first appearance of 2012 at the Sheffield Arena on March 17.

The unbeaten Welterweight star is back from his successful debut in America and promoter Eddie Hearn was quick to secure Brook to sign for another hometown show against an opponent to be named at a press conference next week.

The 25 year-old blasted Luis Galarza away in five rounds in Atlantic City on December 17 to extend his unbeaten pro record to 26 fights. Brook will fight in the Steel City for the third time in ten months and the WBA Inter Continental champion is looking forward to the biggest show of his career so far.

“America was a great experience and a valuable one for the future, but I’m delighted to be headlining a massive show in Sheffield,” said Brook. “This is a huge night for me – the biggest show to come to Sheffield in many years and I’m ready to put in a devastating performance against a tough opponent.”

Hearn added: “Kell was a big hit in America – he performed well, charmed the fans and pundits and learnt so much in the process. Now it’s time to kick on in 2012 and when we first sat down the plan was always to aim for a big showcase fight at Sheffield Arena as soon as possible. March 17 is a massive fight for Kell Brook and for British boxing and fans can also expect a top undercard with Matchroom’s talent on display.”

Central Maine BJJ Ready To Show It’s Happening Here on February 11 in Lewiston, ME

Posted on | January 2, 2012 | No Comments

Lewiston, ME (January 2, 2012) – Central Maine Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (CMBJJ) may be one of the best-kept grappling secrets in New England. However, all of that could soon be changing when two CMBJJ representatives step into the cage to showcase their skills in full-contact mixed martial arts (MMA) action atFight Night I on February 11th.

Owned and operated by Travis Wells, CMBJJ has been quietly building its stable of jiu-jitsu fighters and mixed martial artists since 2004 when Wells first started the school. “At the time it was more like a club,” Wells explained. “Initially we were just a few guys that got together that wanted to do jiu-jitsu.  Today, CMBJJ represents a great group of people from every age bracket with varied levels of interest in jiu-jitsu.”

Wells’ own Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) origins began under Julio Fernandez in Burlington, Vermont. After years of dedicated training and competition, Wells was awarded his brown belt from UFC-veteran Ricardo Almeida. Today Travis represents the legendary Master Ricardo de la Riva under the watchful eye of 4th degree black belt Alexey Cruz Pickerell.

Wells’ star student and BJJ blue belt protégé, Jesse Erickson, will be stepping into the cage for the first time at Fight Night I with the hopes of representing his school—and his instructor—with the honor and discipline he has developed through countless hours of study at CMBJJ. “Erickson is very well rounded and ready to showcase his jiu-jitsu skill set,” stated Wells. “He will be in outstanding shape and ready for this fight.”

For his part, Erickson feels prepared due to Wells’ tutelage. “Travis has been an outstanding instructor and coach,” he said. “He does a great job catering to the strengths and abilities of all of his students. He helps us reach our goals whether it’s competing in BJJ, fighting MMA, or just getting in shape and learning a new art. I’m excited that I get to showcase some of the things I’ve learned from my coaches and teammates at a great new promotion in my hometown. This fight will be the culmination of all my hard work.”

Also representing CMBJJ on February 11th will be a fighter that goes back a few years in the regional MMA scene, Jesse Peterson. Peterson last fought in 2008, but after his last win was forced into dormancy due to injuries. Peterson, who will jointly represent CMBJJ and his longtime school South Shore Sport Fighting (SSSF), credits Wells with helping him to get back in the cage.

“Travis has been a loyal supporter of mine since I first met him years ago,” Peterson stated. “Despite injuries that impacted a consistent training regimen, Travis has been a faithful friend and supporter and always encouraged me to focus and make a run at it again. My goal at Fight Night is to show how serious I am this time to pay respect to people like Travis who have stayed with me through the years.”

“I feel Jesse has put in a lot of hard work and will be ready for his return to the cage,” Wells said. “People can expect to see a very talented wrestler with a dominant top game when he goes to work at the Colisee on Fight Night.”

As confident as Travis Wells is in his students’ ability to perform on Fight Night, he sees the greater Lewiston/Auburn area as the real winners on February 11th.  “I’m very pleased to have this fight in our backyard,” Wells smiled. “Now that MMA is in Maine we finally have the chance to showcase our local talent—and it’s all right here on this card. Tickets are affordable so anyone that wants to go should be able to attend. We’re in for a real treat; it’s going to be a great night of fights.”

The WBF In 2011 – Growing And Growing Fast

Posted on | January 2, 2012 | No Comments

After already having a tremendous 2010, again the only way was up for the World Boxing Federation in 2011, easily surpassing the previous years’ numbers and setting a new record in terms of championship fights.

This is especially remarkable in view of the WBF policy to keep the number of different titles to a minimum as opposed to some ‘colorful’ titles created by other sanctioning bodies.

In 2011, the WBF sanctioned a total of 40 championship bouts, which amounts to a 15% growth rate from the previous year.

These 40 fights for WBF titles took place in 15 different countries, namely Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Mexico, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea and the USA.

With these statistics, the World Boxing Federation now is firmly on the fast track to establish itself as the most serious contender to challenge the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO.

“We bring sanity back into boxing by not bringing in ridiculous and meaningless titles which no fan really wants or having regional titles with ineligible fighters competing for it, simply to earn a sanction fee,” explains WBF President Howard Goldberg of South Africa, further saying “Plus, we try to eliminate officials who only serve  the benefits of promoters. We want honest, honorable officials with integrity and that is exactly what we have at this time.”

The highly qualified staff of the World Boxing Federation grew during 2011 parallel to the growth of the championship activity and noteworthy additions in the past year included Alan Santana of California (North American Coordinator), Torben Seemann Hansen of Denmark (Executive Committee Chairman), Gianluca Di Caro of England (Marketing Director), as well as David Walshe of Ireland (Irish Republic Representative) and Dan Hernandez of New Mexico (North American Media Coordinator).

Also, 2011 saw the WBF embracing facebook and twitter as well as launching its own merchandise clothing line. More is in store for 2012 with the next WBF World Convention firmly in the pipeline, the Gaelic/Celtic championships designed to give an impetus for boxer worldwide from these heritages, and further countries lining up to start promoting WBF championships.

“We know it is a long road ahead of us, but we are ready for the journey, well equipped and will never stop improving. I promise 2012 will be even more of a success for the WBF,” says Goldberg.
