TOP THREE CINCO DE MAYO OPPONENTS FOR DE MAYWEATHER

Posted on | November 28, 2011 | No Comments

By Mike Juhas ~ FightHype.com

DaisyIf you’re fighting on Cinco De Mayo, it makes sense to fight someone of Mexican heritage.  While Canelo Alvarez would be a huge event, he’s not ready for the Mayweather challenge, and Erik Morales is too past his prime for this fight.  But there is an attractive option that most are overlooking, Robert Guerrero.  The Ghost is a young, multi-division world champion (also with Golden Boy) who is bilingual and has a great personal story, far more compelling than Victor Ortiz’s story was.  He has the natural frame to handle welterweight, and his boxer/puncher style would be entertaining paired up against Mayweather. He’s moved up in weight with ease, and although this would be a big jump, Guerrero has faced much more adversity than simply gaining a few pounds for a career-defining fight.  Continue Reading…

Title Shot For Nathan Weise, Faces Steve O’Meara On 14th December

Nathan Weise Vs Steve O’Meara
Southern Area Light Middleweight Championship
Wednesday 14th December @ York Hall, London

For Immediate Release

London – Monday, 28th November 2011

One of the most exciting young prospects from Johnny Eames’ always excellent TRAD TKO stable, ‘Sugar’ Nathan Weise, gets his first taste of Championship action – when he challenges West Drayton’s Steve O’Meara for the Southern Area Light Middleweight title on December 14th.

Weise-O’Meara will be chief support to the Lee Selby versus John Simpson British Featherweight title clash at Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry Promotions event at York Hall in Bethnal Green on Wednesday, 14th December and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky platform Channel 456 & Virgin 546).

Speaking earlier Weise made it clear that he intends to emulate TRAD TKO gym mates; Southern Area Lightweight Champion Ben Murphy, Southern Area Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders, British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams, British Welterweight Champion Colin Lynes and WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight Champion Kevin Mitchell, who all bought back titles to the famous Canning Town gym this year.

“First of all I want to thank my manager, Johnny Eames, for getting me the opportunity to fight for the Southern Area title.

My last fight I drew against former Champ Ryan Toms, who Steve O’Meara beat to get the title.

If it wasn’t for the knockdown I would have won the fight, but that’s boxing for you. It only takes one punch.

I showed heart and got up and got myself back in the fight. As I said if it wasn’t for the knockdown I would have won.

I can see this fight being a whole different type of fight, as I don’t think O’Meara’s as big a puncher as Ryan Toms, even though he stopped him in the first round his record doesn’t say he’s a big puncher, he’s more of a stylist boxer.

I see this fight being more of a chess match, but he’s a champion so I’m going to have to put it on him, take it to him and take the fight from him.

My trainer, Mark Tibbs, has had me training so hard in the gym in preparation for this fight, training’s spot on.

I only boxed just over three weeks ago so really I’ve been training for this fight for seven or eight weeks already. I’m going to be in tip top shape, I’m ready to go

You know what they say ‘styles makes fights’ and I just can’t wait to get in there and win the Southern Area title.

I’m not going to say I am going to stop him but I’m going to outwork him out hustle him and bring the title back to the TRAD TKO gym, where it belongs, and have a good Christmas.”

Nathan Weise versus Steve O’Meara for the Southern Area Light Middleweight Championship takes place on the Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry Promotions event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, on Wednesday 14th December 2011 and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky platform Channel 456 & Virgin 546)

Tickets, priced £40 (Standard Seated) and £60 (Ringside) are available on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com. Tickets are also available in person from Nathan at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA.

TORONTO (November 28, 2011) – Buxton Promotions and Hennessy Sports announced today that they are now co-promoting unbeaten Canadian light middleweight prospect Brandon “Bad Boy” Cook.

The 25-year-old Cook (4-0, 2 KOs), fighting out of Ajax, Ontario, is a very popular prizefighter who made his pro debut last February, taking a four-round decision from Francis Lafreniere. Three wins have followed, including a devastating first-round knockout of Jason Bernava last Friday night in New Brunswick.

“Brandon’s certainly not afraid to mix it up,” 29-year-old Tyler Buxton (Buxton Promotions) noted. “He’s a boxer-puncher with an aggressive style that’s helped him become one of the biggest ticket sellers in Greater Toronto.

“I’ve promoted him since his pro debut. We signed with Hennessy Sports in order to get Brandon more exposure and bigger fights. We’ve done shows with Hennessy Sports and know they can help us build Brandon’s fan-base, not only in Canada, but internationally as well.”

The all-action Cook is an aggressive, come-straight-ahead fighter who International Boxing Hall of Fame nominee announcer Al Bernstein, who called Cook’s last fight from ringside, referred to as a bigger version of WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios.

Other members of the Hennessy Sports Canada stable include NABA super featherweight champion and that organization’s 2011 Fighter of the year, Logan Cotton McGuinness, WBC Silver welterweight titlist welterweight Victor Lupo and unbeaten prospects Tyler Asselstine, Samuel Vargas and Lionell “Lonnie B” Thompson.

MIDLANDS TO HOST FIRST PRIZEFIGHTER OF 2012

Wolverhampton stages 23rd edition of the show on February 11

Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Sport are delighted to announce that Prizefighter will head to the Midlands for the first time as the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton plays host to the Light-Welterweights II of 2012 on February 11.

The early line-up sees Wolverhampton’s English and British title challenger Dean Harrison, English Welterweight champion Adil Anwar and Liverpool’s British Lightweight challenger John Watson and undefeated 20-0 rising star Tyrone Nurse all gunning for the £32,000 winner’s cheque.

The 23rd edition of Matchroom Sport’s revolutionary eight-man, one night tournaments live on Sky Sports, with the Light-Welterweight division providing one of the hottest Prizefighters yet back in December 2009 when two World Champions met in the final, with Gavin Rees defeating Colin Lynes.

Hearn is delighted to be taking the show to the atmospheric Black Country venue, which hosts the Grand Slam of Darts – an event Professional Darts Corporation board member Hearn has enjoyed attending over the last four years.

“The response we get when we take Prizefighter out of London is always fantastic and we expect more of the same in Wolverhampton,” said Hearn. “I’ve had some great nights at the Civic Hall for the Grand Slam of Darts and the fans will create a real cauldron of noise on February 11 – it promises to be a great start to the year for Prizefighter.”

For the first time there will be two ‘Prizefighter Prospect’ fights on the night as two of Matchroom Sport’s hot prospects – middleweight Ryan Aston and welterweight Tommy Ghent – look to continue the unbeaten starts to their careers.

Tickets for Prizefighter Light Welterweights II will be on sale from 9am on Monday 5 December from Matchroom Sport on 01277 359900.

New WBF Champions Crowned In Poland and France

Posted on | November 28, 2011 | No Comments

Saturday November 26 was another busy WBF championship fight-night, as new champions were crowned in Poland and France.
Aleksy Kuziemski and Doudou Ngumbu battled it out for the vacant World Light Heavyweight title in Byalistok, while Loic Foure and Stefan Worth clashed for the International Welterweight strap in Saint Maur.
Ngumbu Beats Kuziemski For World Light Heavyweight Crown
Doudou Ngumbu of France is the new World Boxing Federation (WBF) World Light Heavyweight Champion after impressively beating Aleksy Kuziemski for the vacant title in Bialystok, Poland on Saturday night, November 26.
Ngumbu got the unanimous decision by scores of 118-11 and 116-113 twice, and improved his record to 28-3 (11). Kuziemski is now 22-4 (6), and came up short for the third time in world championship fights.
Both contestants entered the bout brimming with confidence, and with an enthusiastic crowd cheering him on Kuziemski was by many considered the favorite to win. But Ngumbu had other plans, and quickly established himself as the quicker and more dynamic of the two.
The Frenchman got off to a good start and never really let Kuziemski into the fight. In round five Ngumbu caught the hometown-hero with a swift combination that had Kuziemski visibly hurt, and only the vast experience of the Pole kept him from suffering a knockdown.
Kuziemski did have his moments, and at times managed to keep Ngumbu at bay with long straight punches. But it was only moments, and the visitor always seemed to come back to take control.
After twelve somewhat one-sided rounds, nobody really had any doubts that Ngumbu deserved the unanimous decision. He showed his world-class qualities, and is a worthy new world champion.
The Fight was promoted by Dariusz Snarski and his Boxing Production, and televised throughout Poland on Canal+.
“Four De France” Clinches International Title
He gave it his all, but when the final bell rang after 10 intense rounds, Germany’s Stefan Worth still came up short and left hometown favourite Loic Foure going home the new World Boxing Federation International welterweight champion on Saturday (Nov. 26) at Saint Maur, France.
Luxembourg judges Tonio Tiberi and Dominique Schmit both arrived at identical scores of 96:94, while French judge André Pasquier had his countryman ahead by an incredible 97:93. However, most rounds were hotly contested and often there was little to separate the two warriors. Still, were it not for a huge effort by Foure in the last round – which got his army of fans screaming madly – Worth would have clinched a majority draw.
In fact, it was the man from Cologne, now 12-2-1 (3), who landed the best shot of the fight. A mighty left hook in round seven shook Foure down to his toes and dislodged his mouthpiece. But instead of going for the kill, the 26-year-old Worth inexplicably stepped back to allow referee Noel Monnet to replace the safety device! This piece of sportsmanship might well have cost Stefan the victory.
“I have no complains,” Worth said immediately afterwards, “I just hope we can have a rematch. This time I came to his city, so maybe he can come to my place for a return. I think it was a very good action fight.” Most definitely it was and Loic Foure bathed in the adoration of his fans, who had filled the 1.500-seater Salle Omnisports to the last place, after winning the first championship of his seven-year professional career at the age of 31, in the process improving his record to 17-8-2 (4).
