Bellator 52 from L’Auberge Du Lac Loaded with Undercard Talent; Plus the highly-anticipated MMA debut of Muay Thai champion Cosmo Alexander
Posted on | September 21, 2011 | No Comments
CHICAGO, Ill. (September 21, 2011) — Bellator Fighting Championships makes its return to Louisiana on Saturday, October 1st as the promotion hosts Bellator 52 from L’Auberge Du Lac Casino Resort in Lake Charles. The action begins at 7 p.m. ET with a stacked undercard streaming LIVE on Spike.com. The televised portion of the event will feature the quarterfinals of Bellator’s Season 5 Heavyweight Tournament and will begin at 9 p.m. ET LIVE on MTV2 and in commercial-free HD on EPIX.
Lightweight sensation Cosmo “Good Boy” Alexander will make his MMA debut against Lake Charles native Josh Quayhagen, who will also be making his professional debut. Alexander enters Bellator with an incredible resume in Muay Thai, as the 29-year-old striker has over 50 professional kickboxing fights under his belt, along with several of the sport’s most notable championship titles. The Miami resident is one of the most highly-coveted prospects in all of MMA and looks to put on a show for Bellator fans. To see video of Cosmo’s devastating striking in competition, please click HERE.
Bellator featherweights collide as Genair da Silva takes on Bellator veteran Bryan Goldsby. For Silva, the Brazilian striker is looking to get back into the win column after suffering a close split-decision loss at the hands of fellow Brazilian Marlon Sandro in Bellator’s Summer Series Featherweight Tournament.
Undefeated light-heavyweight Matt Van Buren joins Bellator looking for victory over Alexandria, La. resident Nick Nichols. At 25 years old, the Virginia based Van Buren will look to impress Bellator brass with a dominating win.
There are also two intriguing heavyweight fights on the ledger as Josh Burns battles former The Ultimate Fighter competitor Zak Jensen, and Liron Wilson takes on the undefeated Justin Frazier, who will put his 4-0 record on the line.
The Season 5 heavyweight tournament will feature an eight-man field that boasts a dominating 73-15-2 record along with 41 combined knockouts. Undefeated Ron Sparks takes on Oklahoma native Mark Holata, Season 3 finalist Neil Grove faces 15-win veteran Mike “300” Hayes; and in other quarterfinal action, Thiago “Big Monster” Santos looks to be the first man to put a blemish on Blagoi Ivanov’s 4-0 record and Army veteran Eric Prindle will test Abe Wagner, the man who beat former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in the first round earlier this year.
“L’Auberge Du Lac has been an incredible venue partner for us, and we should have a great night of fights on October 1st LIVE on MTV2 and EPIX, as well as on Spike.com,” said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. “There are some first-time Bellator fighters on this card that I can’t wait to watch and see what they can do in the cage.”

Proud ‘Hammer’ Mitchell Balker Ready For Proper East End Tear Up On Oct 7th
Posted on | September 21, 2011 | No Comments
London boxing fans will get the chance to see their newest all conquering hero, Plaistow Cruiserweight sensation Mitchell Balker, in action right on their doorstep, as Spencer Fearon has signed him up to face Welsh hardman Hari Miles at his upcoming Hard knocks Boxing Promotions ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ event at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday, 7th October.
West Ham fanatic Balker shot up the rankings, to #4 in Britain and #83 in the World, after hammering then World #45 ranked Richard Turba in Blackpool last month.
It was this sensational win that prompted Spencer Fearon to pick up the phone and call Balker’s manager, Johnny Eames, to get him on the Premier Sports (Sky channel 433) televised show.
Earlier today Spencer explained his reasons for asking Balker to fight on his flagship TV show, “Why because Mitchell epitomizes what Hard Knocks is all about.
I mean look at that guy, Mitchell, he took up the challenge and got a fantastic win over Richard Turba. Nobody, but nobody, wanted to fight Richard Turba, but he fights him and gets a great win.
Now hear what I’m saying, no padded records, he wins fights, lost a fight by stoppage, comes back and beats a guy who’s a fearful puncher, who’s a demon kind of guy that nobody wants to fight, but he does and beats him.
That’s why Mitchell has to be on the next Hard Knocks show on October 7th.”
Balker, who last year relocated from Amsterdam to Plaistow so that he could be as close as possible to his beloved Upton Park and Johnny Eames’ TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, then added, “I’m really proud that Spencer Fearon wants me to fight on his big show.
I always said I will fight anyone, I came to England to fight, so when they ask me to fight Richard Turba I said yes, I did and I won.
Now Spencer wants me to fight Hari Miles, I said yes, please I want the fight. I’m really looking forward to fighting Hari Miles on October 7th, I’m ready for it.
Training is going really well, I get such good sparring at the TRAD TKO and perfect training from Barry (Smith) and Johnny (Eames), perfect preparations.
I’m really looking forward to the fight, I’m looking forward to fighting Hari Miles especially as it will be right in my own back garden as such. York Hall is so close to here.
When I moved to London I wanted to live near to Upton Park and the TRAD TKO Gym. It’s good for me here as Johnny (Eames), Kevin (Mitchell) and lots of the fighters at the gym are West Ham fans.
When I was in Holland I always watched West Ham matches when I could, I always enjoyed watching them. I’m very proud to live close to the ground, now I get to watch them at Upton Park
I’m very proud to live here and fight in the East End of London, it’s now my home, I’m very proud have the chance to fight in front of East End fans.”
Hard Knocks Boxing Promotions ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ event, which will be headlined by Choi Tseveenpürev, takes place at York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Friday 7th October 2011 and broadcast live on Premier Sports (Sky channel 433).
Tickets for ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ – priced £35 (Unreserved) and £60 (Ringside), are available now on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at The TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA. For further information please call 07960 850645.

The New Ray Robinson
Posted on | September 21, 2011 | No Comments
BAM on Boxing
Ray Robinson, not the original Sugar Ray Robinson but the New Ray Robinson, carries the name of an all-time great. At heart, though, he’s simply a down-to-earth guy trying to make his own way in the world.
I asked the New Ray Robinson to talk about himself, but the first thing he wanted to do was let me know he has six other siblings. He mentioned nothing of the hardships he endured growing up. He said his mother is his “Rock” — the source of his mental strength and drive! He idolizes her. She dealt with adversity raising seven kids on her own but managed to keep them together.
Robinson spoke about Howard “Moses” Mosley, his trainer and, in Robinson’s words, his “father”. He said Mosley–regarded as one of the best trainers in Philadelphia–would pick him up every day and take him to the gym along with other kids. Robinson said Mosley helped him and so many other kids that he lost count. There is true respect between these two. Adversity and sacrifice have welded them together for life.
I remember my first time meeting the duo—they seemed inseparable. You could tell by looking at Robinson and Mosley that they had been working together for a long time and Robinson looked up to his trainer.
As an amateur, Robinson won the Junior Olympics and Silver Gloves. He was the member of the US Boxing Team. He lived at Marquette University in Michigan, where he attended school. He boxed in Italy, Russia, Turkey and Canada on Team USA.
His professional record (11-2, 4 K0s) is impressive, especially considering the stiff competition he has faced. Robinson is not afraid to take risks. He will fight anyone at any time. The tall southpaw is coming off of a 14-month layoff and is ready to get his feet wet again.
In an era when undefeated fighters are maneuvered through the rankings, Robinson has taken the tough fights that others do not. His opponents include Eberto Medina, Darnell Jiles, Brad Solomon and Shawn Porter. Robinson has fought on television a few times and has never disappointed his fans, regardless of the outcome.
When you see him fight, watch every move he makes. He knows angles and has solutions for almost anything his opponents bring to the ring.
Outside the ring, Robinson married his girlfriend of six years, Angie, a native of Detroit. She believes in Robinson and she moved to Philadelphia to support him and start their family. They have a 3-year-old daughter named Mya. Robinson has a father-daughter connection that is stronger than any other relationship in his life. His daughter comes first!
Robinson trains at the Joe Hand Boxing Gym on North 3rd Street. Previously, he worked out of the Front Street gym in Kensington, where I first saw the connection between father and daughter. He would ride the bus to the gym with his daughter, her stroller, the baby bag and his boxing bag and he would carry her up the steps of the gym and take care of her while he was training. She is not only his motivation, but also his world.
Robinson is one of the nicest guys you could meet–until you get him in the ring on fight night. Then he becomes a different person. His never loses focus. He sticks to boxing basics, starting every combination with the jab. It seems like once fighters get to have 10 fights, they focus on a television shot. Not Robinson! He is focused on solely on fighting at home again for the second time in his professional career. He wants to build a relationship with Philadelphia fans and continue fighting in the area.

“THE LION” ROARS AGAIN IN LAS VEGAS: SHARIF BOGERE RETURNS TO SHOBOX ON OCTOBER 7 TO FACE FRANCISCO CONTRERAS IN CLASH OF UNBEATENS
Posted on | September 21, 2011 | No Comments
UNBEATEN RISING STAR JERMELL CHARLO FACES FELLOW PROSPECT FRANCISCO SANTANA IN CO-FEATURED BOUT
LOS ANGELES, September 20 – Following his exciting 10-round battle with Raymundo Beltran in May in a bout which marked his debut on the hit series ShoBox: The New Generation, NABO Lightweight Champion Sharif “The Lion” Bogere will return to the SHOWTIME® airwaves on Friday, October 7 to defend his title against fellow unbeaten Francisco Contreras at the Dallas Events Center at Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. in a rare battle of young, undefeated prospects. Unbeaten Jermell Charlo takes on Francisco Santana in another compelling match-up of prospects on the rise.
“The fans saw what I could do in my last ShoBox fight against Beltran and I promise that they will get more of the same on October 7,” said Bogere. “I am not going to stop punching until I get a world championship and right now, Contreras is in my way.”
”I’d like to thank SHOWTIME and Golden Boy Promotions for this opportunity, and I definitely won’t disappoint them or the fans when I fight Bogere,” said Contreras. “This is the fight I’ve been waiting for, to show the world how I fight on the big stage and it’s going to be a great night for me on October 7th.”
“ShoBox is known for showcasing the top prospects in the sport in competitive fights and this is a prime example of that commitment,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Bogere and Contreras are two of the top rising, unbeaten stars at 135 pounds and everyone is expecting a fight to remember on October 7.”
“This is a main event that I’m looking forward to as much as any this ShoBox season,” said SHOWTIME boxing analyst Steve Farhood. “It will be the speed and quickness of Bogere vs. Contreras’ power. Bogere proved his heart and fighting spirit against Raymundo Beltran in his ShoBox debut and we got a brief glimpse of Contreras on ShoBox in 2010 where he was spectacular. It’s a sensational matchup of undefeated lightweights.”
Bogere vs. Contreras, a 10-round bout for the NABO lightweight championship and Charlo vs. Santana, an eight round junior middleweight bout, are presented by Golden Boy Promotions and will be televised LIVE on ShoBox: The New Generation at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) on SHOWTIME.
Tickets, priced at $25 and $50, go on sale Friday, Sept. 23 at the Texas Station Rewards Center or through Ticketmaster by calling(800) 745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
A native of Uganda who captained his country’s national boxing team, Sharif “The Lion” Bogere (20-0, 12 KO’s) relocated to the United States in 2008 to continue his career as a professional. Known for his aggressive style, knockout power and extravagant ring entrances, he quickly became a favorite in his adopted home of Las Vegas. As he progressed up the lightweight ladder, Bogere defeated tougher competition, including prospects Rodolfo Armenta and Jose Hernandez, as well as veterans Ilido Julio and Shamir Reyes. In May of 2011, the 22-year-old went the 10-round distance for the first time, outlasting the tough Raymundo Beltran to win a unanimous decision and the vacant NABO title. On October 7, he defends that title for the first time.
Like Bogere, the Dominican Republic’s Francisco Contreras (16-0, 13 KO’s) was a stellar amateur, compiling a reported 350 wins while earning a place on the Dominican Republic National Team. In 2007, he turned professional in his home country and proved to be too much for the local competition, going 7-0 with seven knockouts. In September of 2008, he won his first professional title, the WBC CABOFE belt and then began competing in the United States. His string of excellence has not stopped, as he has compiled four first round knockout wins to increase his record to 8-0 in the United States. In his last bout on March 18, 2011, Contreras decisioned veteran Adolfo Landeros and he’s looking forward to keeping his “0” intact while capturing the NABO title in his Las Vegas debut in October.
21-year old junior middleweight phenom Jermell Charlo (15-0, 7 KO’s) has been on the radar of boxing fans ever since his teenage years as a stellar amateur in Houston, Texas. Now 15 fights into his professional career, the anticipation for Charlo’s fights has grown even higher. In November of 2010, Charlo made a huge statement with his near shutout victory over previously unbeaten prospect Luis Grajeda, and after defeating Larry Smith in his most recent bout in June, he will look to take out another up and comer in Francisco Santana.
Fighting out of Santa Barbara, Calif., Francisco Santana (12-2-1, 6 KO’s) earned his reputation as a rising star on the always competitive California fight scene where he has consistently tested himself against solid competition. A professional since 2005, the 25-year-old owns a 2009 win over 7-0-1 Antonio Johnson and in 2011, he stopped Adan Leal in a single round and drew with 6-0 Julian Williams. The next “0” he wants to rtarnish is that of highly touted Jermell Charlo.
A full slate of undercard bouts will be announced shortly.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. “Victor”y Proves Fact is Stranger Than Fiction
Posted on | September 21, 2011 | No Comments
How many times have you seen a superstar in the WWE win the match against a heel while the ref wasn’t watching during the course of a dirty deed going down? As long as it’s the hero/favorite who does it, the audience typically rejoices. It’s entertainment. It’s pro wrestling. That’s what the fan base expects.
In boxing, purists would say the primary emotional requirement is respect: for both the craft of pugilism and the opponent across the ring from you. It’s a sport where you need to respect the game AND the player. The Floyd Mayweather, Jr. win on Saturday night against Victor Ortiz felt and looked like a foul to many fans watching. It may have even been ruled a foul with a point taken from Floyd if the referee had actually seen what unfolded at the final moment of the fight. Unfortunately, we will never know what could have or would have been. The fight is over, and nobody’s lobbying relentlessly for the result to be reversed. Even the calls for a rematch are few and far between in the boxing media. The fact is, as low down and dirty as Floyd’s finishing moves came across to the casual observer, the win was technically legal.
The events and incidents that made up the close of the 4th round of the Mayweather vs. Ortiz fight wouldn’t be believable if they were scripted that way. The outcome of the fight truly proves the theory that fact is stranger than fiction. Floyd’s all about drama, fortune and fame. His lifeblood is controversy and hype. So, getting a win the way he did only cements his legacy as a true boxing villain. Every move he made in the end looked almost as if he’d rehearsed it all before. Ortiz even smiled broadly when Floyd came over to his corner after the KO to wish him well. Whatever you can say about Floyd, one thing you can’t say is that he isn’t a real character. He now has the unique honor of being one of the best fighters of his generation to win a fight under such wild and crazy circumstances.
If you watched this fight and had a funny feeling you’d seen this episode before, let’s rewind the clock to 2008 when Floyd Mayweather, Jr. appeared on a WWE special to battle big man Kevin Nash (A.K.A. “The Big Show”) in a hybrid boxing/wrestling scenario:
Compared with Saturday night’s smackdown of Victor Ortiz, the above clip may help prove another theory. Life appears to be imitating art when it comes to the career of Floyd Mayweather, Junior:
Referee Joe Cortez clearly claps his hands together as if to indicate it’s time to fight again before Mayweather scores the two fight-ending, unanswered and undefended blows to the chin of an absent-minded Ortiz. Cortez appears to be eyeing the timekeeper or another ringside official rather than keeping watch on the action in the ring. It’s as if he expects them to cruise through the remaining seconds of the round casually. Mayweather’s first shot shocks Cortez back into attentiveness.
Just as Ortiz looks to the ref for protection and a ruling on the legality of the first punch, he’s clocked with the follow up right that sends him to the canvas. Instead of realizing something unsavory and potentially outside the bounds of the rules of boxing just happened under his watch and allowing Ortiz to recover and continue, Cortez went in a different direction. He began the count on Ortiz, and the knockout will forever be listed as the official outcome. There will be no asterisk next to this win on Floyd’s record. The result won’t ever be changed to a no-contest. It’s final, and that’s just the way it is.
As unexpected and unfair as the outcome may have been to many fans, it stands. It’s an odd and perhaps un-classy way to get a win, but it’s unique and somewhat special in the same breath. It’s unprecedented in many ways as well. The whole fiasco gives new meaning to the phrase, “Let’s hug it out.”
More importantly for Mayweather, the nature of this victory adds to his mystique and solidifies his legendary status as an undefeated fighter in a golden era for his division. Love him or hate him, his latest stunt is on the tip of everyone’s tongue. There’s no such thing as bad publicity for a guy like Floyd. He might get more “haters” out of the deal, but even that crowd will still watch him fight from now on, just to see what he does next.
