JUST ANOTHER NIGHT IN NEWARK–TORRES & LAMANNA WIN BELTS; CONTROVERSIAL KO AND VINAN – ELLISON IS A CLASSIC

Posted on | September 15, 2011 | No Comments

FIGHT CARD TO BE STREAMED ON DEMAND ON WWW.GFL.TV

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEWARK, NEW JERSEY (September 15, 2011)—On Wednesday night at the Robert Treat Hotel, Vincent Ponte’s Gulfstream Boxing along with Gabe LaConte put on a fantastic night of boxing that saw two titles won; A Controversial Heavyweight fight featuring two undefeated fighters and a New Jersey Fight of the year candidate.

The card can be seen on demand on www.gfl.tv for just $9.99

In the main event, Michael Torres of Jersey City, New Jersey captured the New Jersey won the New Jersey State Jr. Welterweight title with an eight round unanimous decision over Mark Alexander of London, England.

In what was a major step up fight, Wanzell Ellison gathered himself to salvage a hard fought draw against rugged and battle tested Carlos Vinan in a six round Jr. Lightweight fight.

Vinan was all over Ellison over the first two rounds until Ellison started mixing up his attack by both boxing and slugging with the upset specialist Vinan.

When the two went toe to toe the near capacity crowd at the Robert Treat stood and cheered on the two fighters from Newark.

There was not much to choose from as each fighter had some great moments and most ringsiders believed that a draw was the proper verdict.

Young nineteen year old Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna won his first hardware as he captured the BAM Youth title when he took a four round unanimous from Josh Williams of Sheridan, Arkansas.

LaManna tried to use his length advantage but Williams was a gritty customer and kept coming forward in an effort to crowd LaManna.

LaManna made the proper adjustments to come home with the BAM Youth Middleweight crown.

In what was the most controversial bout of the night, undefeated Heavyweights John Lennox and Joey Dawejko locked up in what may have been the most anticipated fight of the night.

Dawejko came out strong and landed some thunderous body punches along with some solid head shots.

Dawejko landed a big left hook that sent Lennox back a step.  Dawejko the preceded to land two more shots before referee Lindsay Page stopped the bout.

Many at ringside (and most vociferously Lennox’ corner protested and were upset at what was very possibly a quick stoppage)

Lennox team has asked the New Jersey State Commission to look at the tape and see if the verdict can be over turned.

Vincent Ponte Gulfstream Boxing and Gabe LaConte plan to return to the Robert Treat Hotel in late November.

The matchmaker was Renee Aiken

FOX Network Deal Flips The Script on Dana White, MMA, and The UFC

Posted on | September 15, 2011 | 1 Comment

By: Rich Bergeron

The new UFC Fox Network deal is ready to take effect in November, and the sport of MMA is bound to get a popularity boost out of the extra exposure. Rolling out the welcome mat for their new partner, Fox News Channel featured Dana White on the morning show “Fox and Friends” soon after the ink dried on the contract. What makes White’s interview so intriguing this time around is that it marks a real shift in the way MMA used to be covered on Fox News.

Consider the following interview from 2006 featuring Dana White, Rich Franklin, And “No Spin” Bill O’Reilly:

Five years later–after millions were spent to make the FOX network the UFC’s new television programming hub–Fox News flipped the script on White and the UFC. They invited White to appear on Fox and Friends (congratulating him for joining the family in the intro), and it actually turned out to be a very professional interview. For the first time in a long while, White cuts out the F-bombs and harsh language and talks like an educated scholar instead of a drunken bum. He even maintains a bit of humility by admitting that the $44 million put into the company (by the Fertitta Brothers) is what really put the sport on the map. He lays out a speech that shows he knows the sport and his organization well, and he handles all the questions like a real expert:

The Fox partnership is a landmark moment for Zuffa and the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. The above video shows that even before the first fight card televised on FOX the tide against the sport is turning. Dana White always aimed high in proclaiming constantly that he wanted the sport to contend with the NFL someday. Back when he first started spouting that philosophy, few people could have imagined he would be able to fulfill his promises. Today, White’s bravado doesn’t seem so ridiculous.

The MMA-themed movie “Warrior” hit box offices on September 9th, introducing even more folks to the sport of MMA. Though Dana White isn’t featured in the film, some of Zuffa’s best current and former fighters do make cameos. UFC is mentioned in the film, and much of the production model involved in the fictitious “Sparta” fight league in the movie is based on UFC shows. Combined with the incredible expansion of the UFC fan base that will no doubt be drummed up by the Fox deal, Hollywood’s tribute to MMA makes the sport a true growth industry these days.

Now if only White would clean up his act and quit cursing all his critics out, we might actually see MMA become a more family friendly sport. Maybe then MMA might actually compare to the NFL, although it seems hard to imagine ever having to buy an NFL game on Pay-Per-View.

Love him or hate him, Dana White at least got the sport on the same network that covers the National Football League. That’s a real milestone for “The Baldfather” and the UFC brass. Since it inevitably leads to more free UFC shows for the fans and a bigger spotlight for the fighters, everybody wins. Bill O’Reilly might not like it, but don’t bet on him coming out of the woodwork to say so at this point. When money talks, O’Reilly walks in this case. He’ll no doubt toe the company line and forget he ever had a bad thing to say about the sport.

LLOYD-TAYLOR BECOMES FIRST RESERVE TO WIN PRIZEFIGHTER

Londoner beats Nick Quigley in the Light-Middleweights II final

Robert Lloyd-Taylor became the first ever reserve fighter to win Prizefighter after defeating Nick Quigley in the Prizefighter Light-Middleweights II final at York Hall in Bethnal Green.

Lloyd-Taylor won the coin-toss with fellow reserve Nathan Weise after JJ Bird fainted in the dressing rooms and was picked out of the hat first by former British, European and Commonwealth Light-Middleweight champion Jamie Moore in the first ever live draw, and WBC Super-Middleweight champion Carl Froch matched him with former two-weight World Champion Takaloo. Lloyd-Taylor was undaunted by facing the ‘Margate Rock’ and kept the veteran at the end of his jab and reached the semi-finals through a split decision.

In the semis Lloyd-Taylor met the favourite Peter Vaughan but threw the form book out of the window with the only stoppage of the night, dropping the Banbury fighter after 90 seconds of the final round, before the contest was waved off in the dying embers.

Quigley had been involved in two wars to reach the final – taking a split decision in an all-Liverpool fourth quarter-final against Steve Harkin, before clinching a spot in the final in the fight of the night against Kris Agyei-Dua, where both men threw plenty of leather but Quigley took a unanimous decision.

The Liverpudlian gave so much in his first two fights and fought bravely in the final, but Lloyd-Taylor’s fairytale had a happy ending, with a confident performance impressing the judges who all gave him the fight 29-28 – meaning the 20th edition of Prizefighter saw a reserve take the £32,000 winner’s cheque for the first time.

“I had the hardest route to the final with the two favourites for the tournament so I should get some credibility from that tonight,” said Lloyd-Taylor. “I haven’t performed well on my last couple of turns on Sky Sports so that makes it really special to win tonight.

“The money is fantastic of course but I’ve never made money out of boxing – it’s never been about money, but now I’ll enjoy this and see what doors are opened.

“I was just sitting there and relaxing when they came in and said that JJ had pulled out. Nathan called heads, tails came down and I was getting taped up – I didn’t even have time to warm up. But that maybe helped in a way as I wasn’t tense at all and I got in there for the first fight.”

Quigley was left to rue a tough draw that saw him fight the last quarter-final and semi-final, but the previously unbeaten 22 year-old believes the night will push his career forward.

“Every fight I had felt like a final and against Robert I thought I did enough but I didn’t get the decision,” said Quigley. “That happens, it’s not the end of the world and I’m glad that I got the chance to show my skills and hopefully I’ve won some fans as well.

“It was sickening when I got Steve Harkin in the quarter-finals. He’s a good mate and that was like a loss, I was genuinely gutted.”

Unbeaten pair Vaughan and Wayne Goddard met in the second quarter-final and both men tore into action from the off, with Goddard enjoying success with some neat combinations but although Vaughan was often wild, he constantly stepped forward and held the centre of the ring, perhaps enough to get him the split decision.

The third quarter-final of the night was a real comeback tale for Agyei-Dua as he came off the canvas in the opening round against Jeff Thomas to claim victory on the referee’s card after the first draw in Prizefighter. A belting left hook from Thomas grounded the Brentwood man, but he came back strong from that point and his stylish and dominant display saw him through.

Fights between friends from the same city can often disappoint but Quigley and Harkin entertained the packed York Hall crowd with Quigley winning through to meet Agyei-Dua in a cracker of a semi-final, one that he won but expended valuable energy and Lloyd-Taylor capitalised in the final to make Prizefighter history.

Prizefighter Light Middleweights II results:

Quarter-finals

Robert Lloyd-Taylor beat Takaloo – split decision 29-28, 28-29, 29-28

Peter Vaughan beat Wayne Goddard – split decision 30-27, 28-29, 29-28

Kris Agyei-Dua beat Jeff Thomas – 29-28 on referee Terry O’Connor’s card after judges scored the contest a majority draw

Nick Quigley beat Steve Harkin – unanimous decision 29-28, 28-29, 29-28

Semi-finals

Robert Lloyd-Taylor beat Peter Vaughan – third-round stoppage with 15 seconds remaining

Nick Quigley beat Kris Agyei-Dua – unanimous decision 30-27, 30-27, 30-27

Final

Robert Lloyd-Taylor beat Nick Quigley – unanimous decision 29-28, 29-28, 29-28

SUCKERPUNCH FIGHTER JEFF CURRAN’S LONG-AWAITED RETURN TO THE UFC HAS BECOME REALITY

Posted on | September 15, 2011 | No Comments

“Here I am, and I am here to stay.”

 Description: cid:image001.jpg@01CC73B3.396C97A0

“The Big Frog” is back. Jeff Curran, after a seven-year absence from the promotion, is back in the UFC, and he doesn’t plan on leaving again. Curran recently signed a brand-new agreement with the world’s biggest MMA promotion, and will face former title challenger Scott Jorgensen in a bantamweight bout at UFC 137 in Las Vegas. He last competed in the organization in January of 2004, when he took a fight with future UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra on nine days’ notice as a late replacement, losing a decision in the process. Since that time, Curran has hopped all over the globe, fighting in promotions such as Pride, King of the Cage, the WEC, the XFO, Strikeforce…they’ve all played host to “The Big Frog.”

Now, he’s back home where he belongs.

“This means the world to me,” states “The Big Frog. “It is a testament to myself more than anyone else of what I am made of. I wasn’t brought in to be filler for the next big thing, or as a publicity stunt. I earned it. I literally fought my way back to UFC…through physical, emotional, mental, and financial battles.

“Here I am, and I am here to stay.”

Every MMA fighter’s dream is to make it to the UFC. Only the best make it. Curran, fighting above his natural fighting weight of 135 lbs. for years due to the lack of lighter weight classes at the time, earned his spot with the promotion in 2004, before the big boom that MMA and the UFC has enjoyed commenced. And what a journey it’s been for Jeff.

“Since the Matt Serra fight, I have had the awesome experience of competing all over the world. From Canada to Japan to the States, shows like King of the Cage, the XFO, the IFL, Japan’s ZST, and many others paved my way to the WEC. Since being released from the WEC a couple of years ago, I have had fights with promotions such as Strikeforce, Bellator, and the XFO. This journey has been one of the most mentally-demanding experiences of my life, and physical, all at the same time. It almost got the best of me, and I even considered retirement at times, which lasted about five minutes at the most (laughs).”

After leaving the UFC, Curran went 14-1 to earn an invitation to the place seen as the mecca for lighter fighters, and the UFC’s sister promotion, at that time, the WEC. “The Big Frog,” in his first fight for the promotion since WEC 4, was tested right away, taking on tough youngster Stephen Ledbetter in his re-debut with the promotion. After garnering the victory, Curran endured a virtual “murderer’s row” of opponents in Urijah Faber, Mike Thomas Brown, Joseph Benavidez, and Takeya Mizugaki. Despite only being finished in the Faber fight, and many feeling he won the Mizugaki bout, Curran was released from the WEC following that stretch of opponents.

“After beating Stephen Ledbetter, I had won fifteen of sixteen fights, so I think facing top guys like that all in a row was a detriment to my career because I was the best. It didn’t get much better than what I had accomplished at that point. The loss to Urijah was most painful. I had that fight won, but a bad grip at one point, or bad movement, more or less put me in a losing position, forcing me to make a desperate move to save the round. This is where the rest of my career went downhill.

“But I’d like for people to understand that losing at the very top levels doesn’t cut it for me. ‘Almost,’ as I was taught years ago, doesn’t count. It’s not a game of horseshoes. But rather than come up for air and rethink our strategy, I went off the handle and insisted on fighting more top-level contenders rather than gain my momentum once again.”

This approach earned Curran a lot of respect amongst fight fans and MMA insiders, but also cost “The Big Frog” his place in the WEC. After his exodus from the promotion, he really began to focus on his gym and fight team, Curran Martial Arts. There, Curran has trained fighters such as Bart Palaszewski, Jens Pulver, Felice Herrig, and his cousin, Pat Curran, who has won both of Bellator’s recent lightweight and featherweight tourneys. With a growing stable of successful fighters, Jeff’s career has grown from fighter exclusively to a hybrid fighter/teacher, as well.

“I love teaching, as long as I don’t feel my knowledge is being chewed up and [spit] out. If it’s being absorbed and taken in, and used for the long term, I love it. I just hate teaching those who don’t take learning serious, be it fighters or students. Guys like Bart, Pat etc…they take it all in, and always have. They are my inspiration still.”

Part of Jeff’s journey has also been personal. Always known as a serious, focused competitor, he wants the fans to know that there’s more to him than what they see in the Octagon.

“People close to me get the ‘person’ that I really am. In the gym and in training, I am focused. In the ring, the cage, I have a job to do. But I love being with my family, having fun, and enjoying life. I just don’t get enough time to do that which is where my ‘serious’ attitude comes off (laughs).”

They say, in life, sometimes all you can do is smile. After facing and conquering all the ups and downs that come along with being a professional fighter, Jeff Curran has earned the right to be happy. And nothing will make him happier than leaving the Octagon with his hand raised in victory at UFC 137 on October 29th in Las Vegas.
