Four World Titles, Plus The RING Magazine Belt and Inaugural Super Six Cup

All Up for Grabs in Unprecedented One-Week Span on SHOWTIME®

NEW YORK (Sept. 14, 2011) – SHOWTIME® will televise yet another important super middleweight world championship bout when former world titlist Mikkel Kessler of Denmark returns to the ring to challenge World Boxing Organization (WBO) kingpin Robert Stieglitz of Germany on SaturdayNov. 5, from renowned PARKEN Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark. The WBO championship fight will be shown on same-day delay and precede the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight title fight between unbeaten defending champion Lucian Bute and Glen Johnson live on SHOWTIME from Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

The Nov. 5 doubleheader will take place just seven days after world champions Andre Ward (World Boxing Association) and Carl Froch(World Boxing Council) collide in The Final of the Super Six World Boxing Classic on SaturdayOct. 29 live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast), from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

The addition of Stieglitz vs. Kessler to the Nov. 5 telecast completes a lineup that puts all four super middleweight world titles up for grabs, along with The RING magazine belt and the inaugural Super Six World Boxing Classic Cup, in back-to-back Saturdays on SHOWTIME.

Stieglitz (40-2, 23 KOs) is at the peak of his game. The 5-foot-11, Russian-born boxer-puncher has won nine consecutive fights and 11 of his last 12. He’ll be making the fifth defense of the WBO belt he won in Hungary on an upset, come-from-behind 11th-round TKO overKaroly Balzsay in August 2009.

“I have a lot of respect for Kessler but he will not take my crown away from me,” said Stieglitz. “It may be that he is a national hero in Denmark, such as Karoly Balzsay was in Hungary, but I travelled there, defeated him and became world champion. The home advantage did not help Balzsay at all and it will not help Mikkel Kessler either. I will defend my title.”

In his most recent outing and lone start this year on April 9, the 30-year-old Stieglitz retained his crown when challengerKhoren Gevor was disqualified at 2:45 of the 10th-round for an intentional headbutt in Germany. In April of 2010, Stieglitz’ unanimous decision over Eduard Gutknecht was dubbed Fight of the Year in Germany.

A true sportsman in and out of the ring who idolizes the Klitschko brothers, Stieglitz is a confident and technically sound boxer with good conditioning and strength. He’s improved most areas of his game in recent years and competes with the poise of a world champion.

As Stieglitz hasn’t fought the caliber of opponents as his challenger, he views the fight against Kessler as a chance to boost his profile in the talent-laden 168-pound division.

Kessler (44-2, 33 KOs) is a former WBA titleholder and WBC titleholder. The 32-year-old is coming off a thoroughly dominant sixth-round TKO over outclassed Mehdi Bouadla last June 4 for the vacant WBO European crown on SHOWTIME.  Making his first start in 14 months, Kessler scored four knockdowns – one in the third and fourth and two in the sixth – before the one-sided proceedings were halted at 2:25.

The victory was especially satisfying to the popular, 6-foot-1 Kessler because he escaped virtually unmarked in his first bout since apotentially career-ending eye injury had forced him to withdraw from the Super Six and vacate his WBC title. Prior to leaving the tournament, Kessler was riding high after capturing the WBC crown with an exciting 12-round, unanimous decision slugfest over the then-undefeated Froch on April 24, 2010.

“I look forward to be fighting on SHOWTIME again,” said Kessler. “I want to show the fans in the U.S. that I am the world´s best super-middleweight. After my successful comeback in June, the next step is to become world champion for a fourth time. The fight against Robert Stieglitz will be exciting. He is technically very strong and he deserves to be holding that belt, but I think that I am better and that I will take the title away from him. It will be a great night of boxing with my passionate Danish fans raising the roof at world-famous PARKEN Stadium.”

Kessler, who’s ranked No. 1 in the WBO, attained the WBA belt in June 2008 and made two successful defenses before losing to Ward on an 11th-round technical decision in Group Stage 1 of the Super Six on Nov. 21, 2009, on SHOWTIME. The Dane’s only other defeat came on a 12-round decision to future Hall-of-Famer Joe Calzaghe on Nov. 3, 2007.

The world title fight in Denmark is promoted by Sauerland Event and SES Boxing; the world title fight in Canada by Interbox, DiBella Entertainment and Warriors Boxing.

Melson to appear in Special Attraction Bout on Martinez-Barker undercard!

Posted on | September 13, 2011 | No Comments

New York, NY (September 14, 2011) – Undefeated junior middleweight Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson of New York City will make his Atlantic City debut Saturday, October 1 at Boardwalk Hall.
Melson, a West Point graduate, will face an opponent to be named in a six round special attraction bout prior to an HBO doubleheader headlined by the middleweight title showdown between champion Sergio Martinez and unbeaten challenger Darren Barker.
Sporting a perfect 5-0 record, Melson’s stopped his last three foes, most recently dispatching Zach Schumach in July. Melson, who had a multi-year layoff between his amateur finale and pro debut, is fighting for the fifth time in 2011 and feels that he’s making the strides to one day become a top-notch professional.
“It’s an honor to fight on this card and I’m working hard as I can in the gym in order to shine,” said Melson, who left his home in New York on September 11 to participate in stringent Anti-Terrorism Training as part of his Army Reserve duties. “The more I fight, the more I believe I can compete against the world’s best fighters like I did in the amateurs.”
With America’s first clinical trial for Spinal Cord Injuries tentatively scheduled for 2012, Melson is donating his entire purse for the sixth consecutive time to “Justadollarplease” in effort to ensure that he is doing his part so the necessary resources are available to make the trial successful.
“Approximately, 10,000 Americans are paralyzed annually from Spinal Cord Injuries. With limited government funding for Embryonic Stem Cell research along with the vast polarized views regarding the ethical aspect of conducting this type of research, the trial is looking at using Umbilical Cord (Non-Embryonic) cells to give human beings with Spinal Cord Injuries their God given right to walk again.”
Melson also acknowledged the importance of the trial and the impact it would have on paralyzed Americans.
“A successful trial would mean that a new FDA approved standard of care that treats Spinal Cord Injuries would be legal in the United States. More importantly, if everything goes as planned, this would be the first FDA approved treatment for Spinal Cord Injuries that would allow the once paralyzed to live their lives full of independence. Between my involvement in the pending trial and the expectations of those that will come to watch me fight, I have a lot to fight for and must perform better than ever before!”
In association with Justadollarplease, Melson created Team Fight to Walk, whose mission is to raise awareness within the boxing community about the importance of stem cell research for spinal cord injuries. Team Fight to Walk is comprised of Melson, IBF cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, title contender DeAndre “The Bull” Latimore, Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana and prospects Sid “The Messenger” El Harrak, Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin, Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Samir and Delen “Sniper” Parsley.
Tickets prices range from $50 to $300 and can be purchased on teamfighttowalk.com. Boardwalk Hall is located at 2301 Boardwalk in Atlantic City, NJ.
Melson’s opponent will be announced shortly.

MMAX ANNOUNCES THE ADDITION OF THE AMATEUR TEAM LEAGUE TO THEIR SCHEDULE AT THE JOINT INSIDE HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO

Posted on | September 13, 2011 | No Comments

First exciting event will be official team qualifier on September 16, 2011

Las Vegas – It was announced today that MMA Xplosion (MMAX), proudly presented by Millennium Events, will host a Team Qualifierevent at The Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011. This action-packed event boasts several unique elements as MMAX Team Qualifier will feature an all-amateur card, with teams coached by UFC® veterans Tony “The Freak” Fryklund and Marvin “The Beastman” Eastman, respectively. In short, MMAX is developing a league of amateur teams coached by high-profile MMA coaches and fighters that will be sponsored by trainers/team owners. Regional squads will be added in the near future as the amateur league develops into a country-wide recognized and established brand, and MMAX continues to stage exciting professional fight events featuring top names and athletes. The amateur league is designed to become a platform for young fighters to gain experience on their way to becoming professional athletes in mixed martial arts.

The September 16th fight card is sure to become a fan favorite, as it is stacked with the best talent from some of the top gyms in Las Vegas –The Tapout Training Center, Throwdown MMA, Xtreme Couture, Wand Fight Team, Sunset Boxing & MMA, and others will all be represented on the card. In the main event, fan favorite Cesar Campos (8-1) will battle the tough and rugged Rudy Morales (7-1) in an excellent match-up between two rising local stars.

“This is a great fight card, and MMAX fight fans will be extremely pleased with the amount of action they will witness on the 16th,” stated MMA Xplosion Owner, Rani John. “I know that Campos and Morales will bring the heat, and we are honored to have pros like Fryklund and Eastman coaching at the event.  It has been a determined goal of ours to develop a team oriented MMA league to help us capture the support of fans across America.”

Tickets are on sale now, with prices starting from $25 and can be purchased at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Box Office, by calling (702) 693-5222 or visiting www.hardrockhotel.com or www.ticketmaster.com. The event is open to all ages. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first match is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Tony “The Freak” Fryklund (14-9) made his pro MMA career way back in 1997 at UFC® 14. The Militech Fighting Systems product ran his record to 8-1 to start off his career. In addition to the UFC®, Fryklund competed in Strikeforce® and Cage Rage during his career. The six-foot welterweight, never one to shy away from a fight, battled many top names in MMA, including Jonathan Goulet, David Loiseau, Brian Ebersole, Eugene Jackson, Matt Lindland, Ivan Salaverry, Thomas “Wildman” Denny, Duane “Bang” Ludwig, Cung Le, and Anderson “The Spider” Silva. Fryklund retired in 2007 after a stellar career, and is now intent on giving back to the sport that gave him so much.

A native of California, Marvin “The Beastman” Eastman (17-13-1) is a consummate professional who has taken on all comers during his career. He has fought all over the world, in promotions from King of the Cage to the Maximum Fighting Championships to the UFC®. “The Beastman” holds wins over well-known competitors such as Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Floyd Sword, Vernon “Tiger” White, Jason MacDonald, Alan Belcher, Travis Wiuff, Jason Guida, Rob Kimmons, and Terry Martin. He’s also faced Rich Franklin, Vitor Belfort, Travis Lambert, Jason Lambert, Drew McFedries, Denis Kang, and Ricardo Arona. In short, Eastman has battled a virtual who’s who in MMA, and is determined to pass on his experiences to the next generation of fighters through Team Beastman.

MMA Xplosion Promoter Vlad Warton said, “Given the level of success from the four professional shows staged at the Hard Rock, we decided to add the amateur league concept to enable the top amateurs the transition to professional ranks. We are committed to developing our amateur/professional MMA brand name to the status of national and international following and recognition. Holding both amateur and professional events will help us achieve out goal and I’m very excited to finally see the Team Qualifier concept come to life.”

Canton’s Bellator 51 Prelims Live on Spike.com Loaded with Ohio’s Best

Posted on | September 13, 2011 | No Comments

CHICAGO, Ill. (September 13, 2011) — In a city that is known for celebrating world-class athletes, Bellator Fighting Championships brings the greatest local talent to Canton, home of the National Football League Hall of Fame, on Saturday, September 24th from the Canton Civic Center for Bellator 51. The night will feature the quarterfinals of the Season 5 bantamweight tournament LIVE on MTV2 and in commercial-free HD on EPIX at 9 p.m. ET. As an added bonus the six preliminary fights, which are packed with the best talent Bellator and The North American Allied Fight Series has to offer, will air free on Spike.com at 7 p.m. ET. Doors for this highly-anticipated event will open at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Tickets for the September 24th event can be purchased on Bellator.comTicketmaster.com and at The Canton Civic Center box office.

A popular name amongst most Ohio fight fans, Cleveland native and Bellator veteran Frank “The Tank” Caraballo will be looking for victory against the well-rounded Dustin Kempf, who calls Carrollton, Ohio home.

Fan favorite and rising star Jessica Eye will be in action, taking on 3-1 fighter Casey Noland. Eye trains with Team Strongstyle in Cleveland, which is the home to Bellator tournament competitors Chris Lozano and Brian Rogers.

Two explosive strikers meet when Canton’s own John Hawk takes on Allan Weickert in light heavyweight action. Originally a middleweight, Weickert is making the move up to light heavyweight and is ready to put on a show for the fans of Canton and the ones watching live on Spike.com.

Dan Spohn looks to keep his undefeated record intact when he meets Dane Bonnigson in another light heavyweight battle. Spohn has started his career with a spotless 5-0 record, including a dominating TKO victory over UFC veteran Josh Hendricks. For Bonnigson, the Bowling Green resident has an impressive wrestling background and when he’s not in the cage, he teaches math at a local junior high.

Newly signed Farkhad Sharipov will be in action against a yet to be determined opponent. The 13-3 bantamweight hails from Kyrgyzstan and is riding a six fight win streak, including a win at Bellator 24. Back with Bellator, Sharipov wants to make the most of this opportunity.

“I wanted to fight for Bellator because I’ve seen how they build a fighter from the ground up,” said Sharipov. “I remember training with Joe Warren years ago before he ever fought for Bellator and I’ve watched as he’s become a world champion. That was a big factor in why I signed with Bellator.”

The night rounds out with 2-0 fighter Clint Musser taking on Joey Holt, who will be making his professional debut. During his high school days in Ohio, Musser was a wrestling state champion and parlayed that success to become a member of the Penn State University wrestling team. IBF Junior Lightweight Champion Amanda Serrano New Boxing Queen of New York 1st Boxing 360 World Champion

NEW YORK (September 13, 2011) – Boxing 360 has its first world champion, new International Boxing Federation (“IBF”) junior lightweight Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano, who stopped WIBF Inter-Continental lightweight titlist Kimberly Connor in last Saturday night’s scheduled 10-round title fight in Brooklyn’s Aviator Sports Complex.

The undefeated 23-year-old Serrano (12-0-1, 8 KOs), a native of Puerto Rico who fights out of Brooklyn, took control early against her game Arkansas opponent, Connor (9-2-2, 4 KOs).

“It’s amazing,” Serrano spoke about winning her first world title at home in Brooklyn. “It was the best crowd ever and I had a lot of mixed-up emotions to deal with. I had so many family and friends there who’ve watched me grow in this sport. Winning a world title means the world to me. Kimberly was tough but I train for every fight like I’m fighting Mike Tyson. What’s next? I’m a fighter who just fights and trains. I’m ready to fight anybody between 122 and 130 who my team puts in front of me.”

Serrano’s promoter, Mario Yagobi (Boxing 360), believes Amanda will soon be ready to take on anybody in the world between the junior lightweight and junior featherweight divisions. “Amanda gave Boxing 360 its first world champion and we believe she’ll soon be adding more title belts to her collection,” Yagobi added. “She is the most dedicated fighter I’ve ever seen. Amanda lives boxing 24/7 and she’s worked very hard to get to this point. What’s really remarkable is that she’s only 23 with more to learn through ring experience. Right now, I’m not sure what’s next for her but the fighter we’d like to get in the ring is Maureen Shea. A fight in New York City between those two would be great for female boxing but, for whatever reason, Maureen doesn’t seem interested in fighting Amanda. Hopefully, she’ll change her mind because it’s a real natural.”

As world champion, Amanda has to relinquish herNorth American Boxing Federation Featherweight title belt.

“Once Amanda hurt her opponent, knocking her down (in the second round), she didn’t let up,” Boxing 360 Director of Boxing Bob Duffy added. “She just let her hands go until the referee (Benjii Estevez) stopped the fight (1:45). She looked good.”

Other members of Boxing 360’s stable include USBA heavyweight champion Maurice Sugar Moe” Harris, WBC #5 super bantamweight Leon “Hurry Up” Moore, former IBF super middleweight champion Alejandro “Naco”Berrio, unbeaten welterweight prospect Vitaliy “Demyan” Demyanenko, WBC Caribbean& NY State super middleweight champion Lennox “2 Sharpe” Allen, Dominican lightweight champion Eudy “AK47” Bernardo, KO king Tyrone Brunson, Mike Mollo, Nick “Hands of Gold” Casal, middleweight prospect DonYil Livingston, Joel Diaz Jr., and “King” David Estrada.
