Two Time World Champ Choi Headlines ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ On October 7th

Posted on | September 8, 2011 | No Comments

Two time World Featherweight Champion Choi Tseveenpürev is set to headline Spencer Fearon’s Hard Knocks Boxing Promotions latest offering ‘This is Hard Knocks’, which takes place at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Friday 7th October 2011 and broadcast live on Premier Sports.

Choi won his first World Crown, the vacant WBF version, in 2006, with a spectacular third round stoppage of Kenyan WBF International Champion David Kiilu at the Tara Leisure Centre in Shaw, Lancashire and successfully defended the title twice in 2007.

He vacated the WBF title a year later, in order to challenge Liverpool’s ‘Dirty’ Derry Matthews for his WBU crown. On the fifth of April 2011, at the Bolton Arena in Bolton.

Choi won his second World crown in spectacular fashion, for five scintillating rounds Choi battered Matthews, sending him to the canvas no less than five times, three times in the third and twice in fifth.

Choi, who never got the chance to defend the WBU crown, has longed for another title shot and following his sensational ‘Fight of the Year’ nominated victory over former IBO World Champion Jackson Asiku in June this year looks set to have his dream come true in the very near future.

On making the event announcement an elated Spencer Fearon said, “Yeah, Choi Tseveenpürev, we’re looking at two opponents.

We had him originally for the WBA Pan Asian title, but you know, everyone is frightened of Choi.

When we did the last show and Gary Logan, the former British title challenger, who was doing the commentary said Choi’s retained his title, and I said what title is that and he said the Champion of the nobody wants to fight club.

He’s right nobody wants to fight Choi, as soon as you get a phone call you see some astronomical money asked for. You know what I mean, guys that would be willing to fight Choi are asking me to pay 90% more than they usually get on TV shows. That’s crazy but Choi’s coming back and he’s gonna do his thing. It’ll be another fight of the year for sure.”

The main support for Choi, against whichever big name Spencer can get to put their record on the line, is a rematch, or is that grudge match, between Southern Area Light Welterweight Champion Darren ‘Mr R&B’ Hamilton and Midlands Area Light Welterweight Champion Dave Ryan.

Back in June, when the pair first faced each other, their fight came to a very premature end, after just one minute and forty two seconds of the first round. Hamilton, who had been controlling the first round easily, backed Ryan to the ropes and as the red mist descended lunged forward, head first. The referee, Ken Curtis, instantly stopped the bout and disqualified Hamilton for head butting.

Hamilton has vowed that this time he will not let Ryan’s constant head butting make him respond in kind, this time he’s going to punish any indiscretion by boxing his head off instead.

To add even more international flavour to ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ Spencer was quick to sign high flying London based Dutch Cruiserweight prospect Mitchell Balker for the show, following Balker’s sensation victory over World #45 ranked Richard Turba a few ago.

The TRAD TKO Boxing Gym fighter will face another super tough opponent, and another member of the ‘no one wants to fight club’, Wales’ Hari Miles.

Hard Knocks/The Real Fight Club unbeaten rising star Joe Catchpole will take on Balker’s TRAD TKO team mate Daryl Setterfield in a Light Middleweight contest.

Young Joe will have his hands full, as Redhill’s Setterfield is a renowned battler with a big right hand, as Catchpole’s team mate Darren Hamilton can attest, as Setterfield knocked him out cold when they went to war back in March last year.

Aylesbury Welterweight Nathan Graham will also be back in action, against Hayes, Middlesex’s Robert Lloyd Taylor. Graham will be looking to get back to winning ways, after the close loss to former World Champ Junior Witter at Prizefighter – Welterweights in June and his prior loss to Adil Anwar, when they fought for the International Masters Welterweight title in March.

Also making his return to York Hall on the 7th October is exciting young Croydon Light Welterweight Danny Davis, who made his debut at the Hard Knocks ‘Shamrock Showdown’ back in March.

Finally Spencer’s prodigy James Wallace will be making his debut at ‘This Is Hard Knocks’.

Hard Knocks Boxing Promotions ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ event, which will be headlined by Choi Tseveenpürev, takes place at York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Friday 7th October 2011 and broadcast live on Premier Sports.

Tickets for ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ – priced £35 (Unreserved) and £60 (Ringside), are available now on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at The TRAD TKO Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA. For further information please call 07960 850645.

“STAR POWER: MAYWEATHER VS. ORTIZ” THE MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY EVENT FOR ALL GENERATIONS

Posted on | September 7, 2011 | No Comments

9-17 HBO PPV Letterhead FINAL

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 7)…Throughout the history of boxing, generations of family members have come together to watch the sweet science.  Whether it was fathers and sons watching fights together or grandfathers buying tickets to take their grandsons to stadiums or arenas, the sport has always been a family affair.  Now, with top pay-per-view events being televised live nationwide, it’s not uncommon for three generations (or more) to gather in the same room and share in the thrills of major prize fights.

This is certainly true with boxing’s massive Mexican and Mexican-American fan bases and it’s no accident that there’s a major fight card on the Saturday of Mexican Independence Day weekend every year.  It’s an ideal night for bringing these families together and this year is no different with“STAR POWER: Mayweather vs. Ortiz” Saturday, Sept. 17 from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as well as STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.  This event will provide the kind of ultra high quality fight card from top to bottom that offers something for fans of every generation.

Maybe Grandpa doesn’t yet know and love the new stars of the fight game, but he certainly knows and loves Erik “El Terible” Morales.  With the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez long retired, Morales now represents the “old guard” of Mexican warriors, a blood-and-guts aggressor from the traditional all-action Mexican mold who has been delighting audiences for more than 18 years.  He is a throwback to whoever was the most popular Mexican fighter of the older fan’s youth, whether that was Kid Azteca, Ruben Olivares, Carlos Zarate or Salvador Sanchez.  For fans who love Morales, his fight on Sept. 17 against knockout-minded Lucas Matthysse might feel like the main event of the evening.

For slightly younger fans, those in their twenties perhaps, it’s rising star “Vicious” Victor Ortizwho might be their favorite.  Ortiz, a Kansas-born, California-based Mexican-American who faces the challenge of a lifetime against the best in Floyd Mayweather in the evening’s main event, is the fighter who’s been developing in front of our eyes for the last five years, rising from prospect to contender to champion.  If he defeats Mayweather, he’ll instantly become the hottest Hispanic attraction in all of boxing.

However, what if you’re a little younger, a Mexican or Mexican-American teenager or a pre-teen kid beginning to follow in Dad and Granddad’s footsteps as a fight fan?  Then your favorite is probably Guadalajara’s Canelo Alvarez, the undefeated super welterweight sensation who’ll be headlining STAPLES Center portion of the event against Mexican-American veteran Alfonso Gomez.  If there’s a young woman at the family pay-per-view gathering, you’d better believe Canelo is the fighter on this card who will grab her attention.

If that’s not enough, don’t forget Jessie Vargas, the unbeaten 22-year-old from Las Vegas who represented Mexico in the 2008 Olympics.  Like Alvarez and Ortiz, he’s a star of the future that today’s kids might be telling their grandchildren about in the future.

For many years, Oscar de la Hoya’s fights were associated with the Mexican Independence Day weekend.  There was his domination of Hector Camacho in ’97, his rematch with the iconic Chavez in ’98, his superfight with Felix Trinidad in ’99 that set the record at the time for a non-heavyweight fight with 1.4 million pay per view buys, his grudge match with Fernando Vargas in ’02, his second fight with Shane Mosley in ’03 and his challenge of Bernard Hopkins in ’04.  Prior to De La Hoya’s rise, the holiday weekend belonged to Chavez; he fought Mario Martinez in ’84, Lonnie Smith in ’91, Camacho in ’92, Meldrick Taylor in a rematch in ’94, David Kamau in ’95 and finally De La Hoya in ’98.  De La Hoya and Chavez both fought six times in headlining bouts on Mexican Independence Day weekend.

In more recent years, the weekend has been spread among other beloved Mexican fighters.  Marco Antonio Barrera defeated Robbie Peden in ’05 and Rocky Juarez in ’06.  Juan Manuel Marquez took center stage against Joel Casamayor in ’08 and Mayweather in ’09.  In 2010, both Canelo Alvarez and Victor Ortiz turned in show-stealing performances on the undercard of the event topped by Mosley’s fight with Sergio Mora.

Major boxing events are a great Mexican Independence Day weekend tradition and this year, it will be a tradition that the whole family-every generation-will enjoy.  From the opening bout until Mayweather and Ortiz are in the ring and Michael Buffer is bellowing “Let’s get ready to rumble!,”STAR POWER is precisely the type of event fans have come to expect on Mexican Independence Day weekend.

‘A Fighting Spirit’ looks at the NY MMA community in the wake of 9-11

Posted on | September 7, 2011 | No Comments

Description: cid:image002.jpg@01CC6D59.6CF87180  This Sunday marks the ten-year anniversary of the terrorist  attacks of September 11, 2001. The way America looked at itself  was altered immensely on that date, and a decade later the  world is a very different place. Memories of panic and  uncertainty are still present, but the urge to keep moving  forward is even stronger.

In remembrance of this anniversary, MMA news & editorial  website, TheFightNerd.com, has released an exclusive short-  film that commemorates this event alongside the New York  MMA community. “A Fighting Spirit” is a video memoir that  interviews members of the NY martial arts community and  discusses where they were when the Towers collapsed, how they have coped, and how New York and America have grown stronger.

Directed by Kahleem Poole-Tejada (director of the full-length documentary “New York MMA,” which will be shown at this year’s Fight Summit in Las Vegas in December) and produced by Matthew Kaplowitz (Editor-in-Chief of TheFightNerd.com) in association with Ranger Up (www.RangerUp.com), the film takes viewers around a tour of downtown Manhattan and provides a glimpse inside several of New York City’s top MMA gyms.

It features many NY-based fighters, such as Renzo Gracie, Chris Weidman, Pete “Drago” Sell, and Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro, as well as Stephen Koepfer of NY Combat Sambo, Mark Yehia of “Elite Plus MMA,” Rob Constance of “The Renzo Gracie Academy,” and Emilio Novoa, President of ADCC North America. Also appearing is UFC middleweight fighter Jorge Rivera, as well as Strikeforce middleweight Tim Kennedy, who adds the voices of members of the U.S. Armed Forces to this emotional piece.
