Balker Gate Crashes World Top 100 After Big Win Over Turba
Posted on | August 24, 2011 | No Comments
Following his sensational defeat of World #45 ranked Richard Turba last Friday, London based Dutch Cruiserweight prospect Mitchell Balker has rocketed into the top one hundred in the World Cruiserweight rankings, moving up from his previous #220 spot to #86.
Mitchell, who one year ago relocated to London to be managed and co-trained by Johnny Eames at his famed TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, controlled the bout virtually from start to finish, saying that he did have to survive a second round visit to the canvas after Turba landed a sharp left uppercut followed by a left hook. After the knockdown Mitchell stayed calm and closed up shop until the end of the round.
Throughout rounds three to six Mitchell was barely troubled by Turba, even though the tough Blackpool based Slovakian was constantly letting rip with wild right hands, and controlled the proceedings with his superb jab and crisp clean combinations to pick up his fifth win, in six outings, by a 57-56 points margin.
On returning to the TRAD TKO Gym earlier today a relaxed Mitchell said, “It was a good fight, I just came in and I was really relaxed. focused, when I walked to the ring.
We had a perfect game plan, me, Johnny (Eames), Leon Williams worked on it. We had a perfect game plan to do it, I just had to keep focused and that’s just what I did and it worked perfect.
The second round, he caught me with a shot, I’ll have to watch the tape to see what went wrong and how he caught me with the shot.
After that everything went OK, he caught me with the shot and after that I was very focused and had my hands up and thought to myself stay calm and stick to the game plan.
After that I didn’t get caught with shots, I was moving around using the ring. He wasn’t using his jab that’s why I got mine in first.
I feel very good, very good, to be in top one hundred. I’m very excited as that means if I keep winning fights bigger fights will come up. I’m very excited.
At the end of this month I will have been at the TRAD TKO gym for one year and I feel perfect, I have a good team and a good manager, good people around me in the gym. I’m very blessed with all the people around me. It seems like family, you know, in the gym. You work hard and you can trust everybody and that’s why things go well.”
Mitchell’s next outing will be against Welsh banger Hari Miles on Spencer Fearon’s Hard Knocks Boxing Promotions event at York Hall in London on the 7th October 2011.
Tickets for Mitchell Balker versus Hari Miles will be available on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person from the TRAD TKO Boxing gym, Gillian House, Canning Town, London E16 4SA early in September.

Travis Paulson to Co-Host Saturday Morning’s Takedown Wrestling Radio
Posted on | August 24, 2011 | No Comments
Travis Paulson’s performance on the mat was replicated in the classroom, as he earned Academic All-Big 12 accolades all four years. Paulson graduated from Iowa State in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in business management and minor in entrepreneurship studies.
Paulson will be training for the 2012 Olympic Games and can be an example as a coach and as someone wrestling toward a goal and the lifestyle that goes with getting to that goal.”
Paulson has excelled in a post-collegiate competition, including winning the 2010 World Team Trials championship at 74 kg. He underwent knee surgery in December, limiting his competitive options heading into 2011.
Travis earned three Iowa prep wrestling titles at Council Bluffs-Lewis Central and posted a prep record of 174-3, including 87-0 his final two seasons.

Buffalo’s Jim Beichner Hires Nat’l Champ Matt Lackey
Posted on | August 24, 2011 | No Comments
“I’ve had the privilege to know Matt for many years and I am confident that he is a great fit for our staff and our wrestlers,” Beichner said.
As a collegiate wrestler for the University of Illinois, Lackey was a 2003 national champion among his three trips to the All-American podium. He was also named the Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year for his efforts on the mat. On an international level, Lackey is a two-time Olympic Trial qualifier and finished fourth at the 2008 U.S. Senior Nationals.
His career of success started all the way back in high school, where he won two high school state titles in Illinois out of his home town of Moline. While at the University of Illinois, he wrote his name throughout the program’s record book. He sits seventh in career wins (120), and has the best single-season winning percentage after finishing 38-0 in his senior season; his career record of 120-14 (.896) is also good for best career winning percentage.
“I welcome the opportunity to work for and learn from Jim (Beichner). We have mutual respect and we’ll fit well together,” Lackey said. “My credentials as an athlete prove that I have a lot of knowledge that I’m ready to share with these students.”
Lackey’s winning pedigree will fit in well with the current Buffalo staff. Assistant Ricky Deubel, a three-time national qualifier returns for his second season and fellow assistant Jeff Catrabone will start his seventh year with the program this winter. Catrabone also offers Big Ten experience after earning All-American status for three seasons and 160 wins while at Michigan.
“What Coach Beichner has done has been phenomenal and I’m excited to improve upon what he’s already done,” Lackey said. “With all the support from the administration, the great recruiting class coming in and the new renovations, the sky is the limit for this program.”
Joining Matt in Buffalo will be his girlfriend Elisa and their two daughters, Payton and Anna.
“This is an exciting time for UB wrestling and Coach Lackey will surely help our program take the next step at the national level,” Beichner said. “I would like to welcome Matt and his family to UB.”
