Blood and Sand X
Sat Aug 13 8:00PM ET

Click here to watch this event on GoFightLive!

The Gulf Coast’s premier cage fighting event is back as Fight Force International presents Blood & Sand X on Saturday, August 13 in beautiful Biloxi, Mississippi at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Fight Force International always puts on jumbo cards and this event is no different. With evenly matched opponents, Blood & Sand shows are always competitive and exciting.

In one of the featured bouts, Drew Wallace (5-1) fights undefeated Jason Knight (3-0) in a lightweight contest. Both fighters have quite a following in the Mississippi area and you can bet this contest will be full throttle from the opening bell. The more seasoned Wallace will look to set the pace early in the fight and use his ring experience to wear down the fast-starting Knight, a grappling prodigy, who has defeated all of his opponents in the first round by submission. Wallace’s only defeat came by decision and the veteran looks to be the first to put a check in the loss column for Knight. Both fighters are established stars prepared to take the next step in their careers and they will leave everything in the cage to prove it.

In other action, Zebulon “The Prophet” Stroud (2-0) faces Austin Parker (3-3) in a welterweight battle of up and coming prospects. The undefeated Stroud is quite a talent in the sport while Parker is on a 3-fight win streak, with all of his wins coming in the first round. These two very explosive 170 lb fighters will lock horns in the center of the cage and the result could be fight of the night.

In more action, Harris “The Sandman” Stephenson (2-0) battles Blake Miles (0-2) and James “Razor” Sharp (5-6) takes on Jason Goodin (3-5) in matches that promise to be barnburners. These two matchups are full of risk takers who have wild fighting styles and always give the fans a great show.

Don’t miss this thrilling mixed martial arts card as this will also mark 10 years of action-packed cage fighting that Fight Force International has staged for the MMA fans of the South. Both professional and amateur fighters from around the Dirty South will compete! Watch the champions of tomorrow compete today on this stacked card as Fight Force International delivers Blood and Sand X on August 13, streaming live on pay-per-view exclusively at GFL.tv!For full fight card and more details about this event, visit gfl.tv or click here

Fight Night Round XVI – Combat at the Cabaret
Sat Aug 13 10:00PM ET

Click here to watch this event on GoFightLive!

Fight Night Entertainment presents Combat at the Cabaret – Fight Night Round XVI on August 13 at the Swinomish Casino located on the beautiful Fidalgo Island in Anacortes, Washington. The event features a bevy of top matches, in both the professional and amateur ranks, highlighted by a UFC veteran fighting at the top of the card.

In the main event, 4X UFC veteran Mario “Super Mario” Miranda (10-3) fights undefeated Jason Zentgraf (5-0) in a high-octane middleweight bout. For Miranda, this fight is a chance to get a “W” against a tough up and coming opponent. Miranda has refocused and rededicated himself to his craft and looks to be the first fighter to put a blemish on Zentgraf’s perfect record. For Zentgraf, this is a wonderful opportunity to fight against a UFC caliber opponent and if he is able to pick up the victory, then he is very likely to gain the attention of the national promotions. Zentgraf’s task is no easy achievement as Miranda went the distance against Aaron Simpson and Demian Maia in his last two UFC appearances inside the Octagon. This fight couldn’t have bigger stakes for both and the winner will climb the ladder and inch one step closer to realizing his dream.

In the co-main event, Craig “The Bullet” Jackson (3-1) battles Dustin Praxedes (1-3). This fight will resemble two Tasmanian devils fighting in the middle of the cage. For Jackson, who is riding a 3-fight win streak, he will look to keep the momentum going with his high risk/high reward fighting style. “The Bullet” always starts fast and will look to push the pace on Praxedes. For Praxedes, a victory over Jackson would show how deceiving his record is. All 4 of Praxedes fights have ended in the first round, so don’t blink. This fight is sure to be a fan-favorite because with these two athletes fighting, it is impossible for this to be a boring match. Look for fireworks early.

Don’t miss this exciting card featuring UFC veteran Mario “Super Mario” Miranda and a collection of other great matchups. Watch the future world champions of MMA compete today on this stacked card as Fight Night Entertainment presents Combat at the Cabaret – Fight Night Round XVI on August 13 only through pay-per-view exclusively at GFL.tv!For full fight card and more details about this event, visit gfl.tv or click here

Muay Thai

M1 Grand Muay Thai Championship
Sun Aug 14 8:00PM ET

Click here to watch this event on GoFightLive!

The Stand Up Promotions crew has put together an all pro fight card featuring talent from Thailand, Japan, and the US. But perhaps the most important fight on the card and possibly of this entire year, is the fight pitting arguably the best nakmuay in the world, Saenchai Sinbimuaythai against the fighter Muay Thai is Life considers the best and most complete Muay Thai fighter to have ever come out of the United States, Kevin Ross.

Although many may qualify this fight as a losing battle for Ross, you have to remember that it was Saenchai himself who asked to fight Ross as he was impressed by the Americans talent. And although Ross will be participating in the fight of his life, in the end it is the Thai who has more to lose than the American. Being that Saenchai is widely considered to be the top Muay Thai fighter in the world at the moment, losing to a fighter from a country that is considered to be behind in Muay Thai prowess would make quite a dent in Saenchai’s growing legend. As for Ross, an opportunity to fight someone like Saenchai is an opportunity to further advance not only his name but the current state of Muay Thai in the United States. Win or lose, a good showing against Saenchai will further cement Ross’ legacy in the sport of Muay Thai worldwide.

Aside from this historic main event, the M1 Grand Muay Thai Championship also features a few other top names in the sport such as the aggressive and exciting Rungravee Sasiprapa and Japan’s Kunitaka Fujiwara.

FULL CARD:

Saenchai Sinbimuaythai (THAILAND) vs Kevin Ross (USA) for MTAA World Title
Rungravee Sasiprapa (THAILAND) vs Kunitaka Fujiwara (JAPAN)
Coke Chunhawat (THAILAND/USA) vs Tetsuya Yamato (JAPAN)
Shane Oblonsky (USA) vs Daniel Kim (USA)
Malaipet Sitprapom (THAILAND/USA) vs Chike Lindsay (USA)

In an exciting under card bout, three-division World Champion and future Hall of Famer Erik “El Terrible” Morales will attempt to become the first Mexican to win titles in four weight divisions when he faces power punching Argentine Lucas Matthysse for the vacant WBC super lightweight championship from the MGM Grand.

Tickets for Star Power: Mayweather vs. Ortiz Fight Live are available at participating theater box offices and online at www.FathomEvents.com. For a complete list of theater locations and prices, visit the NCM Fathom website (theaters and participants are subject to change).

Presented by NCM Fathom, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions, Star Power: Mayweather vs. Ortiz Fight Live is the latestboxing eventto be broadcast live in select movie theaters across the country through NCM’s exclusive Digital Broadcast Network- North America’s largest cinema broadcast network. Fathom, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions first teamed up for the highly successful cinema presentation of the Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez fight in September 2009. Fathom and Golden Boy also presented live boxing on the big screen in high definition in 2010 with four boxing matches including Mosley vs. Mora LIVE in HD last Mexican Independence Day.

“If there’s one thing people know about me, it’s how much I enjoy performing on a big stage and in this case, the big screen,” said Mayweather. “Fans in the theaters can expect a great night of boxing from me and the rest of the stars on the show that night, but I have no doubt that my star will shine the brightest.”

Mayweather (41-0, 25 KO’s) remains boxing’s biggest attraction, wowing crowds and generating record pay-per-view numbers each time he steps into the ring. In his last ring appearance on May 1, 2010, Mayweather dismantled Sugar Shane Mosley in a lopsided unanimous decision victory. Mayweather is no stranger to fighting on Mexican Independence Day weekend, as prior to his sensational win over Mosley, he took on Mexican boxing star Juan Manuel Marquez on September 19, 2009, beating his opponent in spectacular fashion. During his extraordinary career, he has amassed wins over world champions such as Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Oscar de la Hoya and Ricky Hatton.

“Watching the fight on the big screen in movie theaters across the country is a fantastic way to experience a mega-fight like Mayweather vs. Ortiz, Canelo vs. Gomez and Morales vs. Matthysse, all on Mexican Independence Day weekend,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO Golden Boy Promotions. “It is great to work with NCM Fathom again to bring championship boxing to the big screen in an unparalleled level of entertainment.”

Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) is on fire. He is riding a six-fight undefeated streak including his sensational title capturing win over Andre Berto on April 16, 2011. The hard-punching southpaw proved himself throughout their 12-round battle when he survived a knock down in the sixth round and came back to drop Berto at the end of the same round in one of the most exciting boxing fights this year. Ortiz, who was already known as one of the most powerful young fighters in the sport, but was questioned in the past for his desire, showed the world that his heart matches his hands of steel when faced with the best in boxing.

“Since boxing made its exciting return to movie theaters in 2009, Fathom has allowed fans to experience every punch and jab at their local movie theaters,” said Dan Diamond, vice president of Fathom. “This big screen fight brings Mayweather back to the ring in what promises to be one of boxing’s most memorable matches of 2011.”

Already Mexico’s brightest young star, 21-year-old Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KO’s) of Guadalajara is quickly becoming an international sensation with fans around the world taking noting of his power and prowess in the ring and his charm and charisma outside of the ring. Following wins over former World Champions Carlos Baldomir and Lovemore N’Dou in 2010, Alvarez kicked off 2011 with a March victory over Matthew Hatton that earned him the WBC super welterweight world championship. Three months later, Alvarez returned to Guadalajara for a homecoming title defense and victory over Ryan Rhodes that captivated a nation.

A fan favorite who was present in American living rooms every week when he competed on “The Contender” reality show, Alfonso Gomez (23-4-2, 12 KO’s) has proven that he has what it takes to battle it out with the elite in the years since his stint on national television. The owner of wins over Arturo Gatti, Ben Tackie, and Jesse Brinkley, the 30-year old Los Angeles resident (who originally hails from Guadalajara) has also faced current WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Miguel Cotto and Peter Manfredo Jr., but he is currently showing the best form of his 10-year career thanks to a five-fight winning streak that includes victories over Jesus Soto Karass and Jose Luis Castillo.

A three-division world champion and future Hall of Famer, Erik “El Terrible” Morales (51-7, 35 KO’s) ruled the boxing landscape for years, thrilling fans with his classic battles against Manny Pacquiao, Marco Antonio Barrera, Paulie Ayala, Wayne McCullough and In-Jin Chi. But when he returned from a nearly three-year layoff in 2010, many wondered if the Tijuana native still had what it took to compete with the elite. Those questions were answered loud and clear with a three fight winning streak in 2010 and a Fight of the Year candidate in April of 2011, when he went to war for 12 rounds with Marcos Maidana before losing a razor-thin majority decision. Now, the 34-year old warrior is back in the ring and back in Las Vegas to face the concussive punching Matthysse as he vies to become the only Mexican fighter in history to win world titles in four weight divisions.

One of boxing’s hardest punchers, Lucas Matthysse (28-2, 26 KO’s) of Trelew, Argentina has made former World Champions Zab “Super” Judah and Devon Alexander see stars in his last two fights, knocking each of them down, only to lose both fights by controversial split decisions.  The 28-year-old’s new role as the people’s champion is a good one for the crowd-pleasing standout, who has been delivering stellar performances from the time he turned professional in 2004.  A former WBO Latino and WBO Intercontinental champion who counts “Vicious” Vivian Harris, DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley and Rogelio Castaneda Jr. among his vanquished foes, Matthysse, who has won 93 percent of his fights by way of knockout,  is amped up and ready to trade blows with one of the sport’s modern greats, Erik Morales, on September 17.

Hollywood Ending in Hammond for Ring Announcer Treiber

Posted on | August 11, 2011 | No Comments

ESPN Banner

Tom TreiberThey call it a “Hollywood ending” when the conclusion of a story is just a little too good to be believable.

On August 19, Ring announcer Tom Treiber will cap off an incredible 2011 season of ESPN Friday Night Fights – one that saw him become a regular on the show, appearing 15 times in total – with an appearance in the season finale in his hometown of Hammond, Indiana.

“What are the odds that I would cap off my most successful year as a ring announcer, on the show’s season finale, in the city I was raised, Hammond, Indiana, of all places?” laughs the 38-year-old Treiber, who still resides in the nearby Chicago area. “It’s kind of hard to believe.”

Hard to believe as it may be, Treiber will indeed be the ring announcer that Friday night at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond when Hitz Boxing in association with Banner Promotions presents “Fight Night at the Horseshoe”, featuring former world champion David Diaz against younger, faster Hank Lundy and up-and-coming Demetrius Andrade taking on the always-troublesome veteran Grady Brewer.

So, how does a self-professed former casual boxing fan become a well-respected ring announcer known for his professionalism and passion for the sport?

“I started ring announcing senior year of high school,” he explains. “There were a couple of guys I went to school with who were bothers and they were boxers and one of them was Marty Jakubowski. What happened was I had emceed our school talent show and I was interested in getting into broadcasting and I knew Marty was a pro boxer. Marty introduced me to a promoter out of Indianapolis named Fred Berns. At the time, Fred was doing several shows a year at the Hammond Civic Center and he gave me a shot. It was just luck that I went to school with Marty Jakubowski.”

That was 20 years ago. Treiber has gone on to appear on several television networks, travelling the world one show at a time, meeting boxing fans and gaining respect in his field. “It’s not like punching a clock every day. It doesn’t work that way in this business, but I love it. I love travelling. I’ve been all over the world and all over the states. Being a ring announcer has enabled me to do something I love and see the world.

Treiber says his big break came in 1997.

“The thing that put me on the map was in 1997 when I contracted to be the exclusive ring announcer for Fox Sports Net with America Presents. It was for the series Fight Time on Fox. That was my first real big break. People started to recognize me. I was very young and very green but that opportunity is what helped me develop a lot of the relationships I have today with a lot of the people I’m working for now.”

And working he is, nearly every weekend. If not as a ring announcer, then at one of the other broadcast jobs at which he is very talented. “When you work in broadcasting, you wear many hats. I’ve done play-by-play for boxing. I’ve been an on-air personality in radio. I’ve also been a pit reporter for boat racing on Spike, done professional wrestling ring announcing and commentating. I also ring announce for MMA events. I was even on an episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians as a ring announcer.

The secret, says Treiber, to top-level ring announcing is doing the work before the fights. “I typically leave the day before a televised event. Most promoters request I emcee the weigh-in. I truly believe preparation is the key to being a successful ring announcer and at the weigh-in, that’s where I do my show prep.  That’s where you get the correct pronunciations. Make sure all my i’s are dotted. Speak with fighters and get their hometowns. I really try to pay attention to detail. I’m a perfectionist.”

Treiber says he’s still surprised by the breakthrough he’s made this year. “Being in this business for as many years as I have, you develop relationships and it seems like a lot of the seeds I planted throughout the years have started to blossom. This past year has made me feel like the twenty years I have in are really starting to pay off. It’s a really great feeling to finish what has been a terrific year for me working with ESPN and to announce the finale in the city I grew up in. I’m hoping to see a lot of familiar faces. I know I’ve gotten a lot of comments on Facebook and messages from people saying they’ll come to the show. It’s a great opportunity for people who live in this area and see a great show and be part of a live national audience.”

Local boy jumps right out of high school, catches a break, works hard, perseveres through the lean years and ends up seeing the world as one of the top performers in his field. And at the end of his runaway breakthrough year, he ends up right back where he started, doing what he loves in front of friends and family on national television.
