ERIK MORALES, Five-Time and Three Division World Champion

“When we were first talking about this fight, we were talking about an opponent who wasn’t easy, but not as difficult as Lucas Matthysse.

“I have seen a lot of comments on Facebook…people saying I am crazy, and I want to confirm that I am crazy. I am crazy about what I do.

“This is a sport that I participate in with a lot of love and a lot of heart. People question me, but I know that I love to fight and I want to fight. I will be ready September 17. The Mexicans can have a great party and celebrate when I am victorious.

“This is my second fight in the United States since I came back and I am going to win.

“I am very excited to be here and to be boxing again. I was away for two and a half years, but I had a lot of desire to do great things again.

“In April I had a tough fight against Marcos Maidana. A lot of reporters doubted me, but I made it very clear that I am back and can still accomplish great things.

“Everyone can see how I have advanced in the last year. Little by little I am back at the level at which I expected to be. I am very happy with where I am and where I need to be for this fight.

“I am going to do whatever I have to do to win.

“This fight is going to be for the fans and a lot of my fans will be traveling from Tijuana to Las Vegas.

“We’re going to be ready on September 17. I’ll fight for the Mexican people and be champion again.”

JESSIE VARGAS, Undefeated Super Lightweight Contender

“I am definitely excited and will take full advantage of this opportunity. It’s a pleasure and an honor to be on the same card as Floyd Mayweather and Erik Morales.

“I feel that I am ready for this big stage. I had two quick knockouts in my last two fights, but the preparation was there. I was ready for 10 rounds.

“I have a new trainer and I’m very happy with the work we have put in. There will be a difference in my style for the better.

“I expect a great fight from Lopez. We could definitely steal the show. We are both coming to fight.

“Watching Floyd [Mayweather] train is something to be admired. He trains like a fighter who is just coming up. The fact that I have been able to be in the gym with him has helped me because I want to train like that. I am not as slick as him, but I have definitely added some of his tools to my belt.

“This is a great opportunity that has been given to me at 22 years of age and I’m going to take advantage of it. I will definitely come to fight.”

JOSESITO LOPEZ, #8 Rated WBC Super Lightweight Contender

“I am thrilled, ready and focused for my fight against Jesse Vargas.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to showcase my talent on HBO Pay Per View.

“Vargas is a good fighter, but I know that I am the better fighter with more drive.  Come fight night, everyone will know it.

“Whenever you put fighters like me and Jessie in the ring, you are going to have a great fight on your hands because it will be two fighters at the top of our game getting it on.

“I have to prove once again that I am ready to be at the top of my weight class. It’s a tough position to be in, but if you are mentally strong, it can be the best position to be in.”

LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions

“I have been around boxing for 30 years and I cannot remember a card that is as tremendous as this one. From top to bottom, this card is stacked with great fights.

“I think the fans are truly in for a great night of boxing.

“Behind every great young fighter there is someone who has been with them from day one and for Jessie Vargas that has been his father Jose.

“In our [Mayweather Promotions’] eyes, Jessie Vargas is the best young fighter in all of boxing. September 17 will be his coming out party.

“Jessie has been part of the Mayweather Promotions family every since he was a young kid. We have taken him under our wing for a number of years.

“I am personally very proud of him for his accomplishments thus far. Come September 17, all of you will see what Jessie Vargas is capable of.”

RICHARD SCHAEFER, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions

“Today we are here to announce the two fights that will round out this amazing card. Two young prospects in Jessie Vargas vs. Josesito Lopez and of course one of the most famous Mexican fighters in the history of the sport, the legendary Erik Morales who will face Lucas Matthysse. Matthysse is as hungry to bring that belt back to his homeland of Argentina just as Erik Morales is to take it back to Mexico.

“Erik Morales does not take and does not need to take any hand outs.

“When Barrios was not available and Lucas Matthysse became available, I think that it became evident that this was never about Morales getting a title handed to him. It was about earning his titles and if someone has earned his titles the hard way, it is Erik Morales.

“Erik Morales is truly the definition of a modern day gladiator.

“Morales’ resume is second to none. He will become the first Mexican to win a world championship in four weight divisions and make history.

“When the fight is over on September 17, we will have a new world champion and it is going to be Erik ‘El Terrible’ Morales.

“September 17 is going to be the Super Bowl, the World Series, game seven of the NBA Finals, the last lap of the Indianapolis 500, whatever sport that can help you put this into perspective, that is what September 17 is for boxing.

“The fact is, this is as good as it gets.”

CARLOS MERA, Director of Box Latino Promotions (Morales’ Promotional Company)

“As a company we are proud to be working with Golden Boy Promotions on this event.

“Morales is going for a championship in a fourth weight class.

“This is going to be a great event and a great fight.”

KEN THOMPSON, President of Thompson Boxing Promotions (Lopez’ Co-Promoter)

“This is overall best fight card I have seen in years.

“It’s an opportunity for sports fans everywhere to get together with their families and friends and enjoy a great night of fights.

“This card features eight of the greatest fighters in the sport today.

“Josesito Lopez is one of the youngest, sharpest, fastest, most exciting fighters in the world.”

ROBERT ALCAZAR, Vargas’ Trainer

“I want to thank the people who made this fight possible and I want to thank the fighters’ families.

“Jose Lopez is a good fighter. He is considered one of the top fighters in the weight class by most of the sanctioning bodies, but Jessie is ready. Jessie is an excellent fighter. In my opinion, that is what is going to be the difference in this fight…a good fighter against an excellent fighter.

“In my opinion, Jessie Vargas is going to be the big champion we are waiting for in boxing. This fight will open doors for him.

“I have big expectations for this kid. I believe in him. I believe in his family. I believe we are going to have a great fight.”

Pound-for-Pound Boxing Queen Holly Holm Preparing to establish ‘World Dominance’

Posted on | August 4, 2011 | No Comments

Dec. 2 showdown vs. Anne Sophie Mathis at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (August 4, 2011) – Boxing’s Pound-for-Pound Queen, Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm, has thoroughly exhausted the list of leading North American challengers, so her promoter, Lenny Fresquez (Fresquez Productions) looked across the Atlantic Ocean to challenge Europe’s premier boxer, French superstarAnne Sophie Mathis. Holm-Mathis will headline the “World Dominance” card on December 2 at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque.

“My fight with Ann Sophie is going to be very tough,” Holly remarked. “She’s a tall fighter who uses her range. A fight like this definitely helps women’s boxing. I don’t want to be a paper champ and boxing fans don’t want to see one. On December 2nd they’ll see the top two rated women boxers in the world. My pride will be on the line because I’ve always believed you need to beat the best in order to be the best. I’ve never wanted easy fights. Winning a challenge like this makes it an even sweeter victory.”

Holm (30-1-3, 9 KOs) will be gunning to regain her IBA Welterweight title and WBAN Championship Belt in the 10-round main event against Mathis (23-1, 20 KOs), the WBO European Welterweight Champion. “World Dominance,” presented by Fresquez Productions, is a modern day match-up of contrasting female prizefighters, showcasing a consummate boxer (southpaw Holm) versus a knockout specialist (Mathis).

A multiple world champion in three different divisions (light welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight), Holly has defeated virtually all of the significant names of the past decade in women’s boxing from the 140 through 154-pound classes, including Christy Martin, Mary Jo Sanders, Mia St. John, Jane Couch, Duda Yankovich and Chevelle Hallback (twice). Holm is riding a 24-fight unbeaten streak, dating back to her only pro loss in 2004, when a serious cut under her eye prevented her from continuing to fight.

The 29-year-old Holm sports an amazing 20-0-1 (6 KOs) record in world title fights, in addition to a 14-0-1 mark versus world champions.

“There will always be somebody out there good to fight, maybe an up-and-comer or somebody overlooked” Holm said, “but I believe I’ve fought the best here but two European fighters (Mathis and Cecilia Braekhus) are good options for me. I haven’t fought either one, yet, and they’re both very good.

“Women are constantly trying to prove themselves to boxing fans. We put our heart into fighting each time we step in the ring. The top women fights are better than a lot of men’s fight on TV.”

Mathis, who will be fighting outside of Europe for the first time, is currently on a 22-fight, 16-year win skein, since she suffered her only pro loss in her second fight. She’s a two-time world light welterweight champion and Dec. 2 will mark the fifth anniversary of her first world title victory, in which she stopped previously unbeaten Myriam Lamare (13-0) for the WBA crown and vacant EBU championship. Ann Sophie’s victims also include world champions Couch, Yankovich, Ana Pascal and Nathalie Toro.

Holm is expected to fight WBC/WBA/WBO welterweight champion Cecilia ‘First Lady”Braekhus (18-0, 4 KOs) next year.

Jimmo squares off with Sokoudjou; Light-heavyweight title clash set as MFC 31 main event Oct. 7 in Edmonton

Posted on | August 4, 2011 | No Comments

The Maximum Fighting Championship unleashes a potent lineup for its next event – MFC 31: The Rundown to be held on Friday, October 7 at the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta.

Holding down main-event status for the HDNet Fights televised live card will be a showdown for the MFC light-heavyweight title as reigning champ Ryan “The Big Deal” Jimmo puts his belt and a 15-fight winning streak on the line against the MFC’s newest addition, “The African Assassin” Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. The HDNet fights live broadcast will begin at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m.MT/7 p.m.PT.

Tickets for MFC 31: The Rundown are on sale now and available exclusively through the MFC Ticket Hotline at (780) 504-2024.

Both Jimmo (15-1), who has fought 10 times under the MFC banner, and Sokoudjou (12-8) have recently signed multi-fight contracts, and they will meet head-on for the championship. Both fighters are highly seeded in the world rankings – Jimmo at No. 25 and Sokoudjou at No. 30, according to Fight Matrix (http://www.fightmatrix.com/mma-ranks/light-heavyweight-185-205-lbs).

“I am extremely excited to see what happens when Jimmo and Sokoudjou collide. I truly believe it will be the most explosive title fight ever in MFC history,” said Mark Pavelich, Owner/President of the Maximum Fighting Championship.

“Ryan is a terrific champion and represents the MFC like no other fighter ever has before. Now we’re going to see how he handles the athleticism and pressure that Sokoudjou will put on him.”

Jimmo ran his winning streak to 15 with a convincing decision win over Zak Cummings in the first defense of his title at MFC 29. The 30-year-old, who now lives in Edmonton, Alberta, captured the MFC crown at MFC 28 with a third-round TKO via doctor’s stoppage over Dwayne Lewis. That victory was Jimmo’s sixth career win by knockout.

The most-dominating performance of Jimmo’s career came at MFC 25 back in May 2010 when he put forth a ferociousness never seen before imposing three rounds of punishment on Wilson Gouveia for a clear-cut unanimous decision. Jimmo has not lost since his professional debut in February 2007.

Originally from Cameroon, Sokoudjou now fights out of San Diego, California, and will ride a three-fight winning streak into this MFC debut. Sokoudjou’s most notable career win was a spectacular 23-second knockout of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in 2007.

The 27-year-old has eight career victories by knockout including first-round stoppages of Ricardo Arona, Bob Sapp, and Jon Nortje. Sokoudjou has sensational global appeal having fought in Israel, Australia, Japan, Poland, the United States, and United Arab Emirates.

Two other main-card bouts are also set for MFC 31: The Rundown – both in the lightweight ranks.

In a bout between two top contenders, Richie “Hell Boy” Whitson (11-1) will take on “Ragin” Kajan Johnson (18-10-1) with the winner moving a step closer to a shot at the MFC’s 155-pound title.

Whitson has bounced back from a significant leg injury that has kept him sidelined since his split-decision win over Curtis Demarce in a Fight of the Year contender from MFC 28. The Temecula, California, product will take a five-fight winning streak into the clash.

Johnson, who fights out of Vancouver, B.C., is 6-1 in his last seven fights including a dominating performance over Ryan Healy at MFC 27. Johnson holds 10 submission victories to his credit and picked up his fourth career knockout win with a stoppage of John Russell at Heat XC 4.

The HDNet Fights live television broadcast will open with an encounter between two fast-rising prospects as hometown product Mukai Maromo (5-2) battles “The Persian Warrior” Sabah Fadai (7-1).

A popular up-and-comer from Edmonton, Alberta, Maromo made a splash in his organizational debut at MFC 30 with a 36-second knockout of Scott Cleve.

Fadai, who resides in Chilliwack, B.C., makes his MFC debut carrying a four-fight winning streak. The Iranian-born 25-year-old has lived in Asia of late, and captured two wins in Singapore and two in the Philippines.

Three more bouts will be added to the televised main card, with a full complement of undercard matchups also to be set soon.

The previously announced clash for the MFC lightweight title between recently re-signed champ Antonio “Mandingo” McKee and top-ranked challenger Brian “The Bandit” Cobb has been moved to MFC 32 slated for November (exact date and host venue TBA).

Arizona State adds Pascoe to coaching staff

Posted on | August 4, 2011 | No Comments

Arizona State University Sports Information

TEMPE — Travis Pascoe, a former All-American and four-time NCAA qualifier for the University of Nebraska, has joined the Arizona State University wrestling program’s coach staff as an assistant coach, third-year head coach Shawn Charles announced today. A four-year starter at 184 pounds for NU, Pascoe will work with the upper weights on the Sun Devil roster, a group that includes returning Pac-10 Champion Jake Meredith (184) and heavyweight All-American Levi Cooper.

Travis Pascoe

“Travis Pascoe is a hard working individual with great wrestling knowledge and enthusiasm,” Charles said. “I hired him at Fresno State in 2005 because I knew he would be able to help the program succeed and I hired him here to do the same thing. He has found success at each level he has competed and I know he will be able to help our young men not only succeed on the mat, but off it as well. I am excited to have Travis back on staff with me and look forward to his contributions to the growth of the Sun Devil program.”

At the start of the 2011-12 season, Pascoe will work with the heavier weights while fifth-year assistant coach and former Sun Devil All-American Brian Stith will continue his work with the middle weights. Charles, a four-time All-American for the Sun Devils, is set to begin his third year in charge of the program and will once again work with the lighter weights on the roster.

“I am very excited to be working with Shawn Charles once again,” Pascoe said. “It is a great opportunity for me to learn from a tremendous person and coach. I grew up in the West and this program has a lot of talented wrestlers from the West, so I look forward to working with them and helping them achieve their goals, both as individuals and for the team. I really cannot wait to get started with the great group of young men Shawn has brought into the program and see were Arizona State wrestling can go from here.”

The 2011-12 season will mark the seventh year Pascoe has coached in some capacity among the collegiate ranks and his second assistant position after joining Charles’ staff at Fresno State for the 2005-06 season. After the FSU program was discontinued following that season, Pascoe headed north to Corvallis, Ore., where he has served as a volunteer coach at Oregon State for the past five seasons.

During his time in Corvallis, Pascoe worked with the Beavers’ upper weight wrestlers and helped two individuals earn NCAA All-America honors, including Ty Watterson at heavyweight (2007) and Colby Covington at 174 (2011). On the conference level, Pascoe worked with six Beavers that combined to win seven Pac-10 titles (174-184-197-285), including two at the 2011 tournament in Corvallis, while the team won two titles in that same span.

Prior to his time at OSU, Pascoe joined Charles at Fresno State for one season. That year, Pascoe worked with Greg Gifford, who captured the 184-pound title at the NCAA West Region Championships and was one of two Bulldogs to reach the NCAA tournament in 2006. Once the program was dropped, Gifford, who went 1-2 at the national meet that year, transferred to ASU for his senior season, where he won the 184 title at the Pac-10 Championships and went 2-2 at the national meet.

Before Pascoe jumped into the coaching ranks, he was a highly ranked wrestler at 184 pounds for Nebraska. Competing as the starter for four years in a row (2001-02 season through the 2004-05 season), Pascoe recorded a career record of 100-36, which ranked as the 13th-most victories in NU history. A four-time national qualifier, Pascoe advanced to the semifinals of the 2005 tournament and eventually finished sixth overall to earn his first All-America honors. Winning at least two matches in each of his four NCAA appearances, Pascoe helped the Huskers to Top 20 finishes all four years, including a fifth-place showing in 2004 and an eighth-place finish in 2002.

Charles and Pascoe first met at the start of the 2001-02 season as Charles was brought on to be an assistant coach while Pascoe was set for his first season as a starter. During those four years, Pascoe placed third in the Big 12 Championships each of this first two year and then finished fourth as a junior. In his senior season, he reached the finals and finished second in the conference to earn a berth into the NCAA tournament.

Prior to joining the Huskers, Pascoe was two-sport standout at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, Wash. A four-year member of both the wrestling and football squads, Pascoe was a three-time Washington state champion at 189 pounds and was widely considered one of the top recruits in the nation his senior year. He also was a High School All-American at 189 as a senior.

Before his first season in Tempe gets underway, Pascoe will marry Sara McFarland on September 3.
