Joe DiGuardia (center) with boxer Livingstone Joseph of the Bronx ahead of Joseph’s Saturday night professional debut.

Three-time Golden Gloves champion Livingstone Joseph of the Bronx is determined to destroy his opponent when he makes his professional boxing debut on Saturday night.

He also plans to crush cancer.

The 26-year-old boxer is jazzed for his undercard bout at the Knock Out Cancer benefit on the grounds of the sprawlingHunts Point produce market.

Joseph, who trains at John’s Gym in Melrose, feels strongly about helping people with cancer because the disease has ravaged his family. His uncle died from throat cancer eight years ago, and his aunt died from breast cancer two years ago. They lived in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Joseph grew up.

Joseph’s uncle helped introduce him to the sweet science.

“I know my uncle and aunt are going to be watching me from above,” he said, calling Saturday’s event “a blessing.”

Proceeds from the benefit – sponsored by the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Cooperative Association, the American Cancer Society and STAR Boxing – will fund cancer research.

The world’s largest produce market has never hosted a sporting event before. Joseph lives just a few blocks away.

“To fight in my own backyard – it’s a great feeling,” said the lightning-fast welterweight, who was an alternate on the U.S.boxing team at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Joseph will face Tre’Sean Wiggins of upstate Newburgh. Heavyweights Joe Hanks and Alfredo Escalera Jr. will also lock horns at the Hunts Point rumble. Like LivingstoneHanks knows what it takes to fight cancer; his mother was diagnosed with the deadly disease last year.

“She just finished her last chemo treatment three months ago,” said the muscle-bound 6-foot-4 bruiser from Newark. “I’m really motivated to get out here and perform. … I’m going to visit her right after the fight.”

Hanks, 28, will battle Escalera, of Puerto Rico, for the IBA World Heavyweight Championship. The Knock Out Cancer bouts will take place in an outdoor ring at the busy produce market.

“I’m expecting a hot, humid night,” said Hanks, undefeated with 16 wins and 11 knockouts.

The market is located at 772 Edgewater Road in Hunts Point. It will open to spectators at 6 p.m. and the fights will start at 7 p.m., with tickets available in advance and at the gate. For tickets, call STAR Boxing at (718) 823-2000 or visitwww.starboxing.com.

More than 600 tickets have already been sold, including a large number to produce market workers, said Joel Fierman, owner of Fierman Produce Exchange and a market board member.

“We have a lot of boxing fans down here,” he said.

Nate Marquardt Signs with The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA)

Posted on | July 22, 2011 | No Comments

London, England – July 22, 2011 – Europe’s largest and most prominent Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion, The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA), announced today that they have signed one of the top-ranked fighters in the world, former UFC contender Nate Marquardt. The organization will reveal Marquardt’s next opponent and more details on his highly anticipated BAMMA debut in the coming weeks.

Liam Fisher at BAMMA stated, “As soon as we received word that the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission lifted Marquardt’s suspension we jumped at the chance to sign him. He is a top ranked contender and an asset to any promotion. Words cannot express how excited we are that Marquardt is now fighting under the BAMMA banner.”

The three-time Middleweight King of Pancrase Champion and former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight contender boasts knock out of the night and fight of the night honors and has faced some of the toughest competition in the world. Marquardt holds notable wins over names like Yves Edwards, Jeremy Horn,  Demian Maia, Martin Kampmann, Rousimar Palhares and many others.

Marquardt had this to say about signing with Europe’s leading MMA promotion“Offers came in from several fight promotions, but we felt that BAMMA was definitely the best fit. They put on high-quality shows, stack their cards with top-level fighters, and sign those fighters to multi-fight deals.  They are also the only fight organization in the UK that implements PED testing. To be honest, that is one of the main reasons that we chose BAMMA. I want to prove to my fans and to the world that I’m the real deal and that I belong on top.”

Marquardt recently made the decision to drop down to the 170lb division and was expected to make his welterweight debut in June at UFC on Versus 4 against Rick Story, but was unexpectedly pulled from the card the day of weigh-ins due medical clearance issues.  Shortly after, he was released by the UFC.  It was later revealed that medically prescribed hormone replacement therapy caused the elevated testosterone levels that lead to his release. Marquardt’s suspension has since been lifted and he has found a new home with the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA.)

According to Marquardt’s manager Lex McMahon, “Nate & I are very excited to establish a strategic relationship with BAMMA, as they are the premiere brand of MMA in Europe and a significant global player in the industry. BAMMA has stepped up and will be putting on top notch fights with elite fighters.  Nate is honored to represent BAMMA and looks forward to a long term & mutually beneficial relationship.  As Nate mentioned, one of the key factors in our decision to work with BAMMA is their aggressive steps to bring regulation to the forefront of European MMA.  Additionally, Nate is a highly marketable athlete and we feel that he will quickly become one of the most sought after corporate spokesmen in Europe.”

Marquardt went on to say, “Now that my suspension has been lifted and I’ve found a home with a new fight promotion, I can move forward and turn my focus back to my fight career. This has been an extremely difficult time and I’m very thankful to those who stood by me.  I’m looking forward to getting back to fighting and there are some guys out there that I would definitely like to get my hands on. I’m talking about the fighters that kicked me while I was down. BAMMA is known for signing top talent …so I may just get my chance.”

Compelling bout cards, arena sized venues, and high quality televised fight events. These are just a few of the qualities set the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA) apart from other fight promotions in the UK. These same qualities are what continue to draw top prospects to the fast-rising organization. Nate Marquardt is just one of many top-level fighters that BAMMA has signed. Other fighters include Frank Trigg, Efrain Escudero, Joey Villasenor and many more to be announced over the coming weeks.

Nate Marquardt will be doing an exclusive interview with MMA Live tonight on ESPN 2. Tune in at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT!  MMA Live also airs in the UK on ESPN at 10p.m. GMT.

ASH WANTS TO CASH IN ON WORLD TITLE FIGHT

Posted on | July 22, 2011 | No Comments

London (July 22, 2011) — Ashley Theophane is eager to show that there is not just one British fighter who can be at the top of the light-welterweight division this Saturday night at Wembley Arena.
While WBA World champion Amir Khan clashes with IBF champion Zab Judah in the early hours of Sunday morning, Theophane defends his British light-welterweight title against former European lightweight champion Jason Cook.

“The Big Brawl” PPV event is being distributed in the U.S. by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 3 PM/ET– 12 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, and Avail-TVN, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. (Check with your PPV provider for same day replay times.) The telecast is also available in Canada to all Super Channel network subscribers.

Theophane, who holds wins over top fighters such as Demarcus Corley and Delvin Rodriguez, wants a successful defence on Saturday night to pave the way to a fight that will lead him closer to a world title shot.
“Khan has never been on my radar, I want Timothy Bradley who I believe is the number one in the 140lb division,” said Theophane.
“I know that I belong at world level, my record shows that and it’s up to me to beat Cook and then look for a fight that will get me into the world title scene.
“I don’t want to be hanging around on the British and European level, I’ve always wanted to test myself against the very best.”
Meanwhile, challenger Cook’s coach Darren Wilson says the Welshman could not in better shape for his shot at Theophane.
“Nobody is hitting harder than Cookie at the moment. This is the title that he turned pro for and he wants it more than anything,” said Wilson.
“He knows this is his last chance at the British title and he will give it everything.”

IT’S TYSON TIME!

Posted on | July 22, 2011 | No Comments

LONDON (July 22, 2011) — Tyson Furysays he is more than ready for his moment of truth against British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora on Saturday night at Wembley Arena.
The 6ft 9′ Mancunian, with Irish ancestory, has come in for some criticism for how outspoken he has been leading up to his clash with Chisora but unbeaten Fury says he will back up the talk and claim the titles he has always wanted.

“The Big Brawl” PPV event is being distributed in the U.S. by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 3 PM/ET – 12 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, and Avail-TVN, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. (Check with your PPV provider for same day replay times.) The telecast is also available in Canada to all Super Channel network subscribers.

It is by far Fury’s biggest test and he is aware that some may feel it has come a bit too soon but the 22-year-old has no doubt he will produce a performance to remember.

“I’m in the shape of my life for the fight of my life and Dereck Chisora won’t know what hits him on Saturday night,” said Fury.

“I don’t care if I knock him out early or whether I have to go into the trenches, the titles are mine and Dereck knows it. He’s going to freak out when he sees the condition I’m in. I’ve done my talking and now it’s time for action.

“I’ve had some great sparring with a Canadian that we brought in and I know that this is my time, this is Tyson time and on Saturday night everybody watching Channel 5 and everybody watching in Wembley Arena will see it.

“I am the future of British heavyweight boxing, I’m the man who can bring the World title back to Britain. David Haye has lost it apparently because of a sore toe, well I’ll bring it home again.”

Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy is adamant that the public will wake up to the talent of Fury and get behind him after he takes the titles from Zimbabwe-born Chisora.

Hennessy said: “Tyson is a special talent. He fears nobody, he has the natural strength and he has the skills to become a real star of the heavyweight division.

“Chisora is a dangerous opponent and we respect him as the champion but I am very confident that Tyson Fury will begin a journey to the top of the heavyweight division on Saturday night.”
