Fight Night Announces 20+ Fights and Full-Card For February 11th, 2012

Posted on | January 14, 2012 | No Comments

Lewiston, ME (January 13, 2012) – New England Fights! And Nick DiSalvo Promotions are proud to announce the full card for February 11th’s Fight Night I mixed martial arts (MMA) event at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be bringing the first ever mixed martial arts event to Lewiston, Maine,” stated DiSalvo. “Way back in the fall—over four months ago—we began seeking out the best talent in the Northeast to introduce Lewiston to MMA. We did an exhaustive search to make sure that we were coming with the best fighters in the state and region. I am truly humbled by the incredible Maine and Northeast talent that my matchmaker has assembled for this show. Lewiston is a town known for champions and on February 11th we’re bringing a championship card with us.”

Fight Night will be headlined by a main event welterweight bout between Maine’s own Ryan Sanders (2-0) from Young’s MMA in Brewer and Wai Kru/IntenZe fighter Dan “The Ghost” Keefe (7-2).

The Co-Main event will feature a bantamweight clash between The Academy’s Paul Gorman (8-7), out of Portland, Maine and ranked #2 in the Northeast at 135-pounds, and WEC/Bellator veteran Anthony Leone (9-4) from Ithaca, New York.

Fight Night’s professional and amateur competitors collectively represent 19 of the East Coast’s top martial arts schools from eight different states.  “We have high school state champions and collegiate wrestlers on this card; boxers, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Blue Belts, Purple Belts, Brown and Black Belts—you name it, we got it,” stated DiSalvo. “We’ve got some of the top-ranked fighters in the region, big show veterans, and newcomers that you’ve never seen nor heard of before, but that people will be talking about after this show,” he said. “This fight card really does have something for everyone.”

“This card is a labor of love,” stated Fight Night matchmaker Matt Peterson. “I’m so proud to see so many of my favorite fighters pulled together to all compete on one night. The lineup for February 11th represents literally months of work and I want to personally thank all of the fighters, coaches and managers that have decided to be a part of this show. I have such respect for the sport of MMA and the incredible discipline and dedication that the athletes scheduled to appear on this show possess. Participants and fans alike are in for a great evening in Lewiston next month. I hope everyone in the area will take advantage of the affordable general admission rate of $25 per ticket to come out and support some exceptional mixed martial artists and see a great evening of fights.”

“We intentionally marked our ticket prices lower,” DiSalvo added. “We know that Maine, like the rest of the nation, is hurting financially right now. We wanted everyone to be able to afford a ticket to come see MMA live. With over 20 fights booked, you’re paying a little better than a buck per fight, so you can’t go too wrong at that price. Whether you’re a longtime fan or you want to see the sport live for the first time—this card is for you. Come out on February 11th and experience the fastest growing sport in the world and find out for real what all the talk is about.”

Fight Night takes place on February 11th, 2012 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine. Tickets can be purchased online at www.thecolisee.com or by calling 207.783.2009.

New York Golden Gloves officials Guest speakers at Tuesday’s Ring 8 Meeting

Posted on | January 13, 2012 | No Comments

NEW YORK, NY (January 12, 2012) – The first Ring 8 monthly meeting of the year will be held Tuesday evening (Jan. 17 @ 7 PM/ET), featuring a trio of guest speakers representing the upcoming 85th annual Daily News Golden Gloves Tournament, at the historic Waterfront Crabhouse in Long Island City.

The speakers are Brian Adams, director of the Daily News Golden Gloves Tournament, U.S. Metros president Eddie Acevedo and Mickey Rosario, chief of officials.

“This will be an informative meeting about how the Daily News Golden Gloves Tournament has operated so successfully during the past 84 years,” Ring 8 president Bob Duffy said. “This is the largest amateur tournament of its kind in the United States. We’re very fortunate to have Brian, Eddie and Mickey discussing how US Metros officials are assigned, boxers are matched, required tests and how scoring in the tournament differs from in the pro ranks. Everyone in attendance will get a special insight into the inner workings of this great New York event.”

Formed in 1954 by an ex-prizefighter, Jack Grebelsky, Ring 8 became the eighth subsidiary of what was then known as the National Veteran Boxers Association (hence, RING 8) and today the organization’s motto still remains: Boxers Helping Boxers.

RING 8 is fully committed to supporting less fortunate people in the boxing community who may require assistance in terms of paying rent, medical expenses, or whatever justifiable need.

Go on line to www.Ring8ny.com for more information about RING 8, the largest group of its kind in the United States with more than 350 members. Annual membership dues is only $25.00 and each member is entitled to a buffet dinner at RING 8 monthly meetings, the third Tuesday of every month, excluding July and August. All active boxers, amateur and professional, are entitled to a complimentary RING 8 yearly membership.

Melson to face Wilson January 21!

Posted on | January 13, 2012 | No Comments

Boyd and Steve.jpg

New York, NY (January 13, 2012) – Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson will face his most experienced foe to date when he battles Shawn Rawley Wilson in a six round junior middleweight bout Saturday, January 21 at New York City’s Roseland Ballroom.

Hailing from Omaha, NE, Wilson’s faced a number of quality opponents including contenders DeAndre Latimore, Grzegorz Proksa and Jesus Gonzalez. In his most recent bout on October 15,Wilson improved to 6-5 (1 KO) by outpointing Reuben Rodriguez. In addition to having a winning record as a pro boxer, the 29-year-old is a top-notch mixed martial artist with close to 50 fights.

“Wilson is definitely coming to fight,” said Melson, a West Point graduate who improved to 7-0 after knocking out Danny Lugo in December on the Andre Ward-Carl Froch undercard in Atlantic City. “With the experience he has in boxing and MMA, I need to be at my best, especially because a number of West Point boxers are going to be on hand watching me. I’m training hard and working on my endurance because this is going to be a barnburner!”

Melson is also excited about his growing fan base, which helps support his donations to Justadollarplease.org in association with America’s first Clinical Stem Cell Trial using Umbilical Cord Cells.

“It’s truly an honor to see more and more people supporting me each fight. All of my tickets for this fight have been sold, so I really owe it to the great fans out there that are not only helping me, but those in need by supporting the cause”

In association with Justadollarplease, Melson created Team Fight to Walk, whose mission is to raise awareness within the boxing community about the importance of stem cell research for spinal cord injuries. Team Fight to Walk is comprised of Melson, former two-time cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, title contender DeAndre “The Bull” Latimore, Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana, Hector Camacho Jr., 2008 US Olympian Shawn Estrada, and prospects Sid “The Messenger” El Harrak, Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin, Frank Galarza, Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien, Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Samir and Delen “Sniper” Parsley.

The WBKBA Launches The First Sanctioned Bare Knuckle Boxing Association

Posted on | January 13, 2012 | No Comments

Last year the WBKBA—World Bare Knuckle Boxing Association—made history as it held the first sanctioned bare knuckle boxing bout since BKB legend John L. Sullivan fought an epic 75-round contest against Jake Kilrain, winning by knockout and retiring the last heavyweight champion.

In August of 2011, in the Fort McDowell Casino in Scottsdale, Arizona, former IBA Cruiserweight champion Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn defeated Richard Stewart via third round knockout to claim the vacant title and become the new world heavyweight bare knuckle boxing champion.

Gunn and his team formed the WBKBA as the first and only sanctioning body in bare knuckle boxing.

“Our goal with the WBKBA is to provide bare knuckle fighters around the world with an organization where they can legitimately compete in a sanctioned sport,” said Chris Cella, President of WBKBA.  “Moving forward in 2012 we have big plans, and in the near future we believe we can be as big—if not bigger—than gloved boxing and MMA.”

The WBKBA has already announced an upcoming show—BKB 2—to take place in either late February or early March, in which Bobby  Gunn will put his world title on the line, and Dan Batchelder will go to battle for the United States World Heavyweight BKB Championship.

Since the reemergence of the original form of combat, several big names in both the boxing and MMA world have expressed interest in BKB.  The fight sport has been featured in ESPN The Magazine, CNN, Sports Illustrated, Maxim, espn.com, and several other media outlets.

“Bare knuckle boxing is exploding on an international level,” said Cella.  “Each week we continue to get countless requests from fighters around the world asking for information on how they can get involved in BKB in their region, and we expect the forthcoming response to expand exponentially.”

Bare knuckle boxing combines the technique and strategy of a gloved boxing match with the excitement and stand-up of a MMA fight.

“BKB is going to take off big time in 2012,” said Cella.  “We have a solid team—in addition to the world heavyweight bare knuckle boxing champion—and we have some big things in the mix that are going to make BKB a household name.”

For more information on the WBKBA visit www.wbkba.com.
