ROUFUSPORT ROSE TO NEW LEVELS IN 2011; LOOKS TO EXPLODE IN 2012

Description: cid:image001.png@01CCCEE2.5C6CD9B0

(Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA): 2011 was a banner year for the Roufusport. Nominated for “Gym of the Year” by the World MMA Awards…opened up the Roufusport Fighter House…won “Top MMA Gym” from Versus.com…brought in Bellator Welterweight Champion Ben Askren…brought in 2008 BJJ World Champion Joao Zeferino as its new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Head Coach…

In short, it was quite a year.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our fighters and staff,” says Duke Roufus. “They all did such a fantastic job this past year. I’m extremely excited about 2012, and seeing just how far we can go. It’s going to be a great ride.”

Looking ahead to 2012, Duke and his staff are focused on the opening of the new Roufusport facilities, and launching its successful “Fighter House” into greater heights. The new gym will have its grand opening soon, and Duke recently gave a sneak preview of the new facilities: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqvSVNq_mEw&feature=youtu.be

The “Roufusport Fighter House,” which spawned the career of top-ranked UFC featherweight title contender Erik Koch, gives up-and-coming fighters from across the country the chance to train with some of MMA’s best athletes, and receive instruction from some of the top trainers in the sport. It includes all Roufus Kickboxing, technique, and fighter training classes, and provides an opportunity for world class training without the cost of traveling across the world. Roufusport has so much to offer the MMA world, and those looking to get into it.

Closing out 2011, here’s a rundown of some of the Roufusport fighter highlights from 2011:

–         Anthony “Showtime” Pettis put his full skill set on display in a win over Jeremy Stephens at UFC 136 in October.

–         Ben “Funky” Askren downed both Nick Thompson and Jay Hieron in an undefeated 2011 campaign.

–         Erik “New Breed” Koch also went undefeated in 2011, besting both Raphael Assuncao and Jonathan Brookins in UFC fights.

–         Alan “The Talent” Belcher returned from a career-threatening eye injury with a victory over Jason MacDonald at UFC Fight Night 25 in September.

–         Joe Cason made his Strikeforce debut.

–         Sergio Pettis made his professional MMA debut in 2011, and went 2-0 with two head-kick knockouts.

2012 is looking even better. With a stable of fighters that stacks up against any other, the New Year is shaping up to be another year of explosive growth for Roufusport.

Bellator Signs World’s Top Welterweight Prospect Andrey Koreshkov

Posted on | January 9, 2012 | No Comments

For 2nd straight year, Bellator signs long-term contract with world’s top welterweight prospect

CHICAGO, Ill. (1/9/12) — As Bellator Fighting Championships prepares for its highly anticipated sixth season, the promotion has once again added a premier talent from across the globe, this time signing undefeated Russian welterweight phenom Andrey “Spartan” Koreshkov. Last year, Bellator signed highly-touted Douglas Lima, who went on to win the Season 5 Welterweight Tournament and will face Ben Askren for the title.

Widely regarded as the top welterweight prospect in the world, Koreshkov joins Bellator under the tutelage of two-time Bellator Middleweight Tournament Champion Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko as the two dynamic strikers represent RusFighters in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Undefeated in nine professional fights, “Spartan” is a true finisher in every sense of the word. The 21-year-old prodigy has never had a fight move into the third round and is the owner of five knockout victories. While the competition will surely increase with Bellator, Koreshkov adds to an already dangerous welterweight field.

“The international market has produced some incredible talent for us, and Andrey is near the very top of that list,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. “Our Talent Development team, lead by Sam Caplan continues to be at the forefront of international scouting, and we’ll continue bringing the best talent from across the world to Bellator.”

Jantzen earned his second career EIWA Wrestler of the Week Honor after going 4-0 in his seasonal debut.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior co-captain Corey Jantzen has been named the EIWA Co-Wrestler of the Week after posting a 4-0 record and helping the Harvard wrestling team to a 3-1 mark over the weekend.

Jantzen earned bonus points in three of his victories, recording one fall and two major decisions while making his seasonal debut. His biggest win came via a 7-4 decision in tiebreakers, however, as he knocked off third-ranked and previously unbeaten Mario Mason of Rutgers.

Jansen trailed Mason 4-0 in the second period before an escape and takedown by the Crimson grappler moved the score to 4-3 heading into the third. Jantzen evened the score at four with a third-period escape, sending the match into overtime. Neither grappler scored in the sudden victory period, and Jantzen rode out Mason in the first portion of the tiebreaker. Jantzen scored an escape in the second portion of the tiebreaker, and sealed the victory with a takedown before time expired.

This is the second EIWA Wrestler of the Week honor of Jantzen’s career. He shares the accolade this week with No. 4 Steve Bosak of Cornell.

The Crimson will return to action Saturday, Jan. 4 at the Lonestar Duals where it will meet Oklahoma, Appalachian State and Air Force.

Middleweight Prospect Richard Pierson Back In Action February 17

Posted on | January 9, 2012 | No Comments

For more information follow Richard Pierson on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Richard-TP-Pierson-Fan-Page/251954198152149.

Paterson native and up-and-coming middleweight Richard Pierson will return to action Friday, February 17, 2012 as Gabe LaConte’s First Round Promotions presents a night of boxing at the Nutley High School in Nutley, New Jersey.

Following nearly a two-year layoff from the squared circle, Pierson (9-2, 6 KO) put on an impressive show in his comeback fight in June of 2010, stopping Reynaldo Rodriguez at 2:32 of the first round, handing the undefeated fighter his first loss.  But the young fighter has had problems with fights falling through and getting cancelled last minute.

Having fights fall through has been somewhat of a regular thing for Pierson, through no fault of his own.  Fighters and promoters have been avoiding the devastating puncher because in four fights he was supposed to be the “B” fighter, and he came in and knocked out the “A” fighter.

Along with his heavy hands, Pierson has caught the attention of boxing fans around the world because he has always stepped up to fight every time he was given the chance.  To his credit, he has never faced an opponent with a losing record.

Although not having a set opponent would present an issue in training for some fighters, Pierson doesn’t allow it to affect him.

“I haven’t changed how I prepare for a fight,” said Pierson.  “I train the way I always do; I focus on the win.  It is unpredictable.  I could have an opponent right now and a week before the fight that can change, so I just make sure that I’m in shape and able to go out there and do what I know I can do.”

Despite the problems Pierson has faced in the past with getting fights, this past year Pierson sought out the management of former heavyweight knockout artist and boxing trainer Lou Esa.

“Richard is probably one of the most devastating punchers I’ve ever worked with,” said Esa.  “This kid can hit you with either hand that’ll put you on Queer Street.  Just knowing a little bit about Richard has put me in a different state.  He has 10 children.  He takes care of them all by himself.  When you look up father in the dictionary, you see a picture of Richard Pierson.  He shows that kind of determination inside the boxing ring.  He is determined to win a championship, and I think he will.  This kid is not going away silently; in fact he isn’t going away at all.  He is someone to be reckoned with, and nobody wants to fight him now.”

In his young career Pierson has fought at top level venues, including the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas, Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, and several others.

When asked if he felt he had an advantage since he has always fought tougher competition, Pierson responded, “The thing with the tougher competition, it’s the same way I look at this fight coming up.  I go out there to fight, and look at each fighter as a human being, just like I am.  To me it doesn’t matter who you have fought or where you have fought…it depends on what you are bringing to the table.  But I don’t think it was an advantage for me to be fighting on big stages early in my career.  That’s one of the reasons why it has been so hard for me to get fights now.”

Going forward in 2012 Pierson hopes to stay active and consistently fight throughout the year.

The middleweight prospect currently trains at Ike and Randy’s gym in Paterson, New Jersey.

“Lastly I want to give a shot out to Lou Esa for being one of the only guys who was willing to take time out to try to get my career back and moving, and Maureen Shea, who always gave me great advice.  She is the female champion, and always gives me great advice and showed me the right way to go, and always kept me level-headed.  There were times that I’ve gotten down in boxing, and she is the one who brought me back.  With the two of them I believe my career is going to go on and my life is going to go how it should be.  And thanks to Blockstarzzent for getting my photo up on the promo flier for the fight.”

Tickets for Richard Pierson’s return to the ring cost $40 for general admission and $100 for a VIP table (which includes a buffet dinner) can be purchased directly through Lou Esa at Final Round Boxing and Fitness in Whippany, NJ or by calling (973) 885-7962.
