“Dangerous” Dyah Ali Davis kicks-off 2012 vs. Alfonso Lopez on ESPN Friday Night Fights season opener

| BOCA RATON, Florida (January 4, 2012) – World-rated super middleweight contender “Dangerous” Dyah Ali Davis (20-2-1, 9 KOs) headlines against Alfonso “The Tiger” Lopez (22-1, 17 KOs) in this week 2012 season-opening ESPN Friday Night Fights show, held outdoors in Mallory Square in Key West, Florida.
Presently rated No. 9 by the World Boxing Council (“WBC”) and No. 10 by the World Boxing Association (“WBA”), Davis will not be fighting too far from his Fort Lauderdale home in the 10-round main event versus Lopez, who fights out of Cut and Shoot, Texas.
“Friday night is very important for me because it’s the first ESPN show of the year and my first fight on ESPN,” Davis said as he concluded training camp. “I think ESPN has an even broader range of coverage than HBO or Showtime because everybody has it. It’s my coming out party. I’m looking forward to having a great 2012, so why not start things off with a great performance on a big stage?”
The son of 1976 Olympic gold medalist and Most Outstanding Boxer, Howard Davis, Jr., Dyah’s signature victory of date occurred last April on ShoBox, when he won an impressive 10-round decision in Texas against previously unbeaten (20-0) and highly-ranked Marcus Johnson. Davis also has a decision win against USBA middleweight champion Osumano Adama, who was undefeated (13-0) in 2009 going into their six-round bout in Miami Beach. Adama, who recently defeated former world champion Roman Karmazin (TKO9) in an International Boxing Federation (“IBF”) eliminator, is the No. 1 contender in line to fight IBF champion Daniel Geale.
Lopez’ lone loss as a pro was to former world champion Kelly Pavlik, by way of a 10-round majority decision, last May in Las Vegas.
“Lopez is a good boxer who didn’t have a lot of amateur fights,” noted Davis, who didn’t have a single amateur match. “He’s a quick learner, too. He has good movement and he puts his punches together. He can make for a difficult fight with his movement, but we’ve been working hard to nullify that.”
Dyah’s head trainer the past 2 ½ years, two-time world champion John David Jackson, has been where Davis aspires to reach. “This training camp was productive and pleasant because of the addition of Mr. Craig Gibson, who worked with Dyah on strength conditioning and planning his diet,” Jackson commented. “That made my job in the gym that much easier because I didn’t have to worry about Dyah losing weight. He’s on weight and looks great.
“The biggest improvements I’ve seen since working with Dyah is the confidence he has in himself. He never had an amateur background, so fighting had been like on-the-job-training for him. And he doesn’t move around as much in the ring; his footwork is still there but he’s executing much better, and less movement has resulted in him throwing better punches with additional power. His punches now have more impact when they hit his opponent.
“I haven’t seen much of Lopez other than his fight against Pavlik, but I don’t see anything special. He has decent movement and power, but doesn’t have one dominant area. This fight is about Dyah. If he wins impressively for TV people watching, it should lead to bigger fights and better paydays for Dyah. The way in which he wins, spectacularly, will get him to that next level.”

Harry Joe Yorgey and Zain Shah to Clash February 11 on Jimmy Lange Boxing Card at Patriot Center
Fairfax, Va. (January 4, 2012) –Jimmy Lange Boxing officials announced today that highly-rated junior middleweight contender “Lightning” Harry Joe Yorgey (23-1-1, 11 KOs) of Bridgeport, Pa., will square off with undefeated local power puncher Zain “Tiger” Shah (5-0, 3 KOs) of Chantilly, Va., in a six-round contest on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at the Patriot Center. The action-packed card, presented by Valcourt Building Services, features three world title bouts headlined by Jimmy Lange’s defense of his World Boxing Union 154-lb. belt (opponent TBA).
Yorgey, coming off a fifth-round KO win against Donovan Castaneda last February, has suffered only one loss – a third-round KO to Alfredo Angulo for the World Boxing Organization Junior Middleweight Championship – during his ten-year career. The Philadelphia-area fighter has captured a pair of 154-lb. championships. He defeated Jason LeHoullier via majority decision for the International Boxing Federal International title on August 22, 2008 and won the International Boxing Association Intercontinental belt with a ninth-round KO over Ronald Hearns on March 28, 2009. This fight marks his debut in the Capital area.
Shah, a Northern Virginia native who trains at LA Boxing’s Reston gym, last fought on September 10, 2011 at the Patriot Center where he scored a controversial second-round KO over Baltimore’s Julius “Vicious” Kennedy. Midway through the second round after knocking his opponent down once, Shah dropped Kennedy again with a solid right. However, his quick follow-up strike appeared to hit Kennedy while he was still down with one hand touching the mat. The Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation officially changed the decision to ‘no contest’ on December 20, 2011. This will be Shah’s fourth appearance at the Patriot Center.
Officials also announced that Upper Marlboro, Md. heavyweight Duane Mobley will make his professional debut against undefeated Dennis Benson (1-0, 1 KO) of Norfolk, Va. in a four-round tilt. Mobley fights out of Sugar Ray Leonard’s gym in Palmer Park, Md., and compiled an amateur record of 27-2. Benson’s victory came against another Beltway boxer and teammate of Mobley’s, Abodurin Akinyanju, via a third-round KO last November at the nearby Showplace Arena.
In the Co-Main Event, top veterans Michael “No Joke” Stewart and Joe Wyatt will challenge for the vacant WBU welterweight championship, while Tori “Sho Nuff” Nelson of Ashburn, Va., will face Vashon “Lady V” Living for the vacant Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) middleweight championship belt. Also on the card is undefeated local prospect Todd “White Lightning” Wilson taking on Fernando “El Latigo” Basora.
Doors will open at 6:00 pm, with the first fight scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm. All bouts are subject to change.

Malecek’s UW LAX Looks to National Duals in Springfield, Talks to Takedown

UW-L finished 30th overall with 13.5 team points. A total of 43 teams competed.
Seeded 12th in the tournament, Yewah opened with a win by technical fall (20-3, 4:14) over Eastern Michigan’s Seth Schaner. He then earned a win by decision (9-6) over sixth-seeded Zach Neibert of Virginia Tech, who went on to finish fourth.
Yewah fell to eventual champion Kendric Maple of Oklahoma by decision (8-0) in his third match, but came back to win a pair of matches to advance to the fifth-place match. He defeated fourth-seeded Steve Dutton of Lehigh by decision (11-4) and 10th-seeded Billy Ashnault of Rutgers by major decision (15-3) before falling to 12th-seeded Adam Krop of Princeton by decision (11-5). Krop placed third overall.
Yewah earned fifth-place with a win by decision (17-10) over Iowa State’s Luke Goettl.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, January 7 at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Duals in Springfield, Illinois.
The 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Presented by Hibiclens and The Marines has announced the brackets for the event taking place on January 7-8 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Illinois.
This five division tournament will take place over a two-day period and is double elimination. Division II, Division III and NAIA will all compete in sixteen team double-elimination brackets. The NJCAA and Women’s Divisions are placed into eight team brackets, all divisions are guaranteed three matches.
In Division II Newberry takes the number one seed to start the tournament, with Upper Iowa drawing in as the number two seed. Newberry is no stranger to this tournament, they have made the finals two of the last three years. In last year’s final Nebraska-Omaha came away with a closely fought out win over Augustana 17-15. Augustana enters this year’s event seeded fifth.
Returning Champion, Wartburg College, comes in as the top seed in the Division III bracket with Augsburg College as the number two seed. , Warburg claimed their fifth team title last year with a 16-15 win over University of Wisconsin. UW La Crosse enters the tournament at No. 4.
In the ten year history of the event, Wartburg College has been in the finals all ten years while Augsburg has been in the finals eight out of the ten years. Each school has won five titles.
Great Falls (MT) earned the top seed in the NAIA division. This is the first time in school history that the program has earned this distinction. Grandview (IA) was awarded the second seed and looks to improve on last year’s seventh place finish.
Last year’s finalist in the NAIA, Notre Dame College and Lindenwood University , will not be competing this year due to the fact they are re-classifying to Division II.
Four-time NJCAA Dual Champion, Iowa Central will look for their fifth title as they enter the event as the number one seed. Returning NJCAA Champion Clackamas Community College is currently seeded second with Labette College as the third seed.
Taking the No. 1 seed for the women are returning five time champions of the National Duals, Oklahoma City University. Competing in the tournament for the first year is King College as they capture the No. 2 seed, while returning runner-up Simon Fraser takes the third spot. The women are the only division in this competition that wrestle under freestyle rules.

Diaz, Hettes, Hendricks and Overeem Propel Top Players in Recent Kountermove Fantasy MMA Tournaments

San Francisco, CA. – January 4, 2012 – The Kountermove fantasy MMA movement continued to display strong momentum over the holiday weekend, drawing the attention of thousands of MMA fans, fighters and key media players. The site gained a significant number of new members leading up to UFC® 141. Kountermove members completed a total of 1,850 game entries and competed for $5,700 in cash prizes.
UFC® 141’s most valuable Kountermove fantasy fighter was Nate Diaz who scored 149 fantasy points for a salary of $3,900. Jim Hettes and Alistair Overeem were also very good draft choices, with Hettes chalking up 116.5 fantasy points for a salary of $3,300 and Overeem, 112.5 points for a salary of $5,800. The least valuable UFC® 141Kountermove fantasy fighter was Jon Fitch. Fitch cost Kountermove players $6,200 but yielded zero points.
The best possible Kountermove fantasy team that a player could draft for UFC® 141 under the $25,000 salary cap was Alistair Overeem, Nate Diaz, Johny Hendricks, Alexander Gustafsson, and Jim Hettes.
Congrats to Kountermove member E-LoGic who scored 563 points, the highest total fantasy points in an entry fee game for UFC 141 with Dong Hyun Kim (77), Nate Diaz (149), Alistair Overeem (112.5), Jim Hettes (116.5) and Alexander Gustafsson (108).
Randy “The Natural” Couture, who finished a respectable 13th out of 22 players in Kountermove’s first ever MMA Media Knockout Invitational tournament for UFC® 141, had this to say about fantasy MMA.

OCHIENG AND QUIGLEY BATTLE FOR TITLE ON JAN 28 English Light Middleweight belt up for grabs at York Hall

Erick Ochieng and Nick Quigley will fight for the vacant English Light Middleweight title at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Saturday 28 January, live on Sky Sports.
Ochieng and Quigley will provide the chief support for Carl Frampton’s Commonwealth Super Bantamweight title defence against Kris Hughes, and their clash promises to be the perfect appetiser to the Irishman’s big night.
It’s a first title fight for the pair although 23 year-old Quigley has gone tantalisingly close to major honours when he reached the Prizefighter Light Middleweights final at the east London boxing Mecca in September – losing to Robert Lloyd-Taylor but gaining a new following with his tremendous displays against fellow Scouser Ste Harkin and Brentwood’s Kris Agyei-Dua. Quigley bounced back in December with a shut-out win over Dee Mitchell in Wigan taking him to 10-1.
Stoke Newington man Ochieng coming into the fight on the back of three wins in 2011, and the hotly-tipped 24 year-old is itching to claim the strap after recovering from the sole defeat of his career in March with a win over Liam Cameron in May and also comes into the fight with a points win over Mitchell, York Hall the venue as Ochieng moved to 8-1.
Also on the bill are Islington’s unbeaten Middleweight prospect John Ryder, Upminster Lightweight Ryan “Crash Bang” Taylor, Canning Town’s Heavyweight debutant Wadi Camacho and a real tear-up in store between former two-time World Champion Robin Reid and Waltham Abbey’s Daniel Cadman.

PSU’s David Taylor’s Performance Earns Fans Respect! Talks to Takedown

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Jan. 4, 2012 — The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team (4-1, 0-1 B1G), ranked No. 4, will return to dual meet action on Sunday, Jan. 3, when they face the Michigan State Spartans (2-2, 0-1 B1G) at Kellog Arena in Battle Creek, Mich. The dual begins at 2 p.m.
Penn State is coming off a superb run to the 2012 Southern Scuffle Championships, crowning four champions and winning the team title over No. 3 Minnesota by 14 points. Penn State won the title with 191.5 points while Minnesota was second with 177.5. The Nittany Lions entered day two with a slim 7.5 point lead over the gophers and used a superb 6-3 run in the semifinals and a 4-2 showing in the finals to claim the crown. The semifinal fireworks led way to Penn State crowning four individual champions and getting the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler Award, given to All-American David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio) for his 165-pound title. Joining Taylor as champs were All-American Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.) at 149, All-American Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.) at 174 and All-American Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) at 184.
The Nittany Lions are being led by a balanced and high scoring attack, including a trio of undefeated wrestlers. Molinaro is 16-0 and ranked No. 1 at 149, Taylor is 14-0 and ranked No. 1 at 157 and Ruth is 16-0 at 174 and ranked No. 2. Defending National Champion Wright is 13-2 and No. 3 at 184 while senior Cameron Wade (Twinsburg, Ohio) is 13-4 and No. 6 at 285. Red-shirt freshman Dylan Alton is 12-3 and ranked No. 9 at 157 while true freshman Nico Megaludis (Murrysville, Pa.) is ranked No. 10 at 125 with a 14-3 mark. Fellow true freshman Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.) is 9-5 and ranked No. 13 at 197.
Michigan State will come into the dual with a 2-2 mark, 0-1 in Big Ten action. The Spartans sport a veteran line-up featuring four ranked grapplers and six talented seniors. Sophomore Mike McClure is 11-5 and ranked No. 11 at heavyweight, senior Anthony Jones is 12-3 and ranked No. 14 at 157, senior Tyler Dickenson is 7-1 and No. 16 at 197 and junior Dan Osterman is 17-6 and No. 18 at 149.
Penn State leads the all-time series between the two schools 15-9, including the last six in a row. Penn State won last year’s meeting 30-9 in East Lansing on Feb. 4. Michigan State’s last win was a 19-12 victory in East Lansing on Jan. 15, 2005.
Penn State continues Big Ten action on the road next weekend when it visits Northwestern on Friday, Jan. 13, at 8 p.m. (Eastern) and at Wisconsin on Sunday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. (Eastern). Penn State’s next home dual is on Jan. 22 when Iowa comes to Rec Hall for a dual that is already sold out. Penn State then hosts Ohio State on Jan. 29 and only standing room only tickets remain. Fans can purchase a very limited number of those SRO tickets by calling 814-865-5555. Tickets are priced at $8 for adults and $5 for youth (18 and under) and can be purchased from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day or in person at the Bryce Jordan Center box office. A maximum of four tickets may be purchased per person. The full season slate of live dual meet and tournament action will air locally on WRSC AM (1390 AM) with Friday evening duals being simulcast on WRSC FM (103.1 FM). Lock Haven’s WBPZ (1230 AM) will also carry the entire season live and further affiliates may be added soon. WIEZ 670 AM (Huntingdon/Lewistown) will carry all Sunday duals during the regular season plus the Big Ten and NCAA Championships in March.
