For his ‘Graduation’ Against Roman

javier fortunaSampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing wishes to congratulate his up-and-coming featherweight sensation Javier “El Abejon ” Fortuna (18-0, 13 KOs) for taking the biggest step of his young career in beating Juarez, Mexico’s former world title challenger Miguel Roman (38-8, 28 KOs).

Making the second defense of his WBC Youth Intercontinental featherweight title at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino on Friday night, Fortuna dropped Roman in round one and then held off a late rally to win by unanimous decision (97-90, 96-91 and 96-92).

“He’s ready for an important television date now,” said Lewkowicz of the 22-year-old southpaw. “Javier is exciting and quick and powerful and he’s always in a great fight. I think with this victory over a tough opponent that has fought for a world title, he has graduated to the world-class level.”

In beating Roman, the IBF #12-rated Fortuna won his fifth fight of 2011 and snapped Roman’s four-fight winning streak.

“It was a very impressive showing against a determined veteran and Javier did a great job,” Lewkowicz continued. “He started very strong and didn’t fall apart when the other guy tried to come on. I think he has star qualities and he’s ready to jump into the mix at featherweight now.”

Pantera Miranda Returns with Big Victory; Now Stalking Cleverly

“Cleverly will feel stupid when I’m done with him.”

One of boxing’s hardest punchers and most exciting warriors, Edison “Pantera” Miranda (35-6, 30 KOs), fresh off a sensational TKO win over WBO #7 light heavyweight Kariz Kariuki on Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, is already back in the gym looking and forward to his next bout.

“I felt really good in there. Probably the best I have felt in years,” said the energized Miranda. “I trained hard and was in great shape. Kariz hit me a few times, but I was able to walk right through them. I knew I could hurt him with the left and as soon as I saw the opportunity I took advantage of it.”

Miranda dropped Kariuki in round five with a devastating counter hook. Kariuki was able to get up, but never recovered. Shortly after, the fight was stopped by referee Allan Huggins.

With the victory, the Colombian slugger is sure to move up in the WBO rankings. The current WBO Champion, Nathan Cleverly, is currently without an opponent for his Feb 25 homecoming fight in Wales.

“Sure, I would love to fight him in his backyard. I have never turned down a challenge. I have a huge fan base in England and all over Europe. I’m back in the gym and it would be no problem for me to get ready for a title fight in February. It would give me great pleasure to fight in front of all those great fans and give them a night they will never forget.”

Ever the showman, Miranda also added: “Cleverly will feel stupid when I’m done with him.”

Until word of his next fight, the 31-year-old Miranda will stay in the gym and continue working hard. “I am ready for anyone.”

Robert Guerrero wants Mayweather and it all makes sense

Posted on | December 21, 2011 | No Comments

By Brad Cooney ~ 8countNews.com
Five time world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero wants a crack at Floyd Mayweather Jr and he wants him next.  Guerrero, a big, tall, strong, fighter with knockout power in both hands has the skill set that would make this fight a very interesting one.  What better opponent for Mayweather for a May 5th date? Cinco De Mayo a huge Mexican Holiday that would bring Guerrero fans out by the thousands, especially if they did the fight in the Bay area in Northern, California.  Even if Mayweather wanted to stay in Vegas, Guerrero would still sell tickets.

This would be a perfect good guy Vs. bad guy type of fight.  Floyd loves to take on the villain part, and Guerrero is naturally a good guy with a very interesting feel good story behind him.  Robert and his wife have faced down their most powerful opponent thus far, cancer.  Mrs Guerrero was diagnosed with Leukemia which required a bone marrow transplant.  Together, Robert and his wife took on the biggest fight of their lives.  The HBO producers would eat this story up and it would make a very powerful HBO 24/7 series.

If Mayweather picks Guerrero as his next opponent, nobody can say that he is cherry picking this time.  Guerrero is a 5 time world champion with dangerous knockout power in both hands.  He is in his prime and he comes forward and can adapt to any circumstance presented to him.

We all know that Top Rank is in no hurry to make Mayweather Vs. Pacquiao so why not make Mayweather Vs. Guerrero?  Continue Reading…

8CountNews sat down with Guerrero and talked about a potential Mayweather showdown.  He had a lot to say, and he explains why this fight makes sense for boxing.  Guerrero also talks about a very touching and heartfelt documentary that will soon be released about his wife’s battle against cancer.  Listen to the Podcast of this interview here.

The WBF Active, Even On Christmas Eve

Posted on | December 21, 2011 | No Comments

The World Boxing Federation has had an active and busy 2011, and one would think that at least during the Christmas holidays things would slow down.

But not so, as the WBF is sanctioning two international title fights on December 24 in Belgrade, Serbia.   On a show promoted by Zoran Andjic, German International Champion Uensal Arik (7-1, 7 KOs) will face his biggest test so far when he takes on Turkish-born veteran Turgay Uzun (37-18-2, 24 KOs) for the vacant WBF International Super Middleweight title.

While this will only be the second title fight of Arik’s career, Uzun, a former German International title-holder himself, has been part of twelve championship bouts so far. However, all his victories so far being by stoppage, Arik will be looking to neutralize the experience advantage of Uzun with his significant punching-power.

In the second WBF title fight on the card, and the main event, local hero Nenad Stankovic (13-12-1, 9 KOs) squares off with Germanys Jonathan Pasi (22-23-2, 8 KOs) for the vacant International Cruiserweight crown.

This will be a clash of unusual title-challengers, as both started out as clear-cut journeymen before turning their careers around. Although winning a Yugoslavian title in the process, Stankovic went 4-12-1 in his first seventeen fights before taking a six-year break. Since his return in 2007 he has won nine straight, eight of them inside the distance.

Jonathan Pasi was 3-17-2 after his first twenty-two professional starts, but has since gone 19-6 with his losses coming against very good opposition. His last two bouts were at Heavyweight where he lost to notables Alexander Kahl and Timo Hoffmann, but back in a more suitable weight class, Cruiserweight, he expects to continue his good form against Stankovic.

Lewkowicz Congratulates Jackson and Rogers

Posted on | December 21, 2011 | No Comments

john jackson vs leatherwoodSampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing wishes to congratulate his two Virgin Islands-based junior middleweights for their impressive victories on Friday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Fighting in front of a huge crowd of boxing dignitaries, undefeated power puncher John Jackson (12-0, 11 KOs) scored a TKO 6 over formerly undefeated Keandre Leatherwood (9-1, 6 KOs) to win the vacant WBC Youth World light middleweight title and Samuel Rogers (11-0, 6 KOs) scored a TKO 10 over formerly undefeated Jamar Freeman (9-1-2, 5 KOs) in a fight for the vacant WBC FECARBOX light middleweight title.

“Both guys fought undefeated opponents in very competitive fights and now they both have significant professional titles. Along with John’s older brother Julius, they are the fighting pride of the Virgin Islands and I’m very happy for them,” said Lewkowicz.

22-year-old Jackson, the son of former three-time world champion Julian Jackson, is a “chip off the old Hawk.” Like his father, he has enormous punching power that can turn a fight in his favor at any second. “He has the style fans like the best. His fights are always spectacular because sooner or later he catches up to his opponents and when they fall, they fall hard.”

John’s older brother, Julius Jackson (12-0, 8 KO’s), is an undefeated super middleweight prospect.

Samuel Rogers action29-year-old Rogers stands over six-feet tall and has the solid fundamentals and sneaky punching power to also become a force in the division. “Samuel can do it all. He can hunt you down with his aggression and he can also fight as a counter puncher who wears his opponents out by frustrating their efforts to reach him.”

Lewkowicz says it won’t be long before all three fighters begin regularly appearing on the premium networks.

“The people of the Virgin Islands are rallying behind these future world champions and for good reason,” added Lewkowicz. “They all have the power and skills to bring big-time boxing back to their homeland.”
