Bombs Away Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez vs. Donovan “Da Bomb” George Mar. 17, Theater at MSG, HBO Co-Feature

WORCESTER, Mass. (February 2, 2012) — The fuse has been lit for a super middleweight explosion March 17 on HBO between an undefeated Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez and Donovan “Da Bomb” George, live from the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The 10-round, non-title fight between International Boxing Federation (“IBF”) No. 4-rated Donovan (22-1-1, 19 KOs) and No. 5-ranked Rodriguez has world title shot implications for the winner. The much-anticipated, action-packed fight between two of the top 168-pounders in the world will serve as chief support for the Sergio Martinez-Mathew Macklin main event on the DiBella Entertainment-promoted St. Patrick’s Day show, THE REAL Middleweight Championship – Get Your Irish Up.

Dominican Republic-native Rodriguez (20-0, 14 KOs), a 26-year-old fighting out of Worcester (MA), is genuinely excited about making his HBO and MSG debuts. “This is a dream come true for me,” Rodriguez said from his Houston training camp. “Fighting on HBO is the biggest stage in boxing, outside of a pay-per-view event, especially at Madison Square Garden. I’m extremely excited to be fighting for the first time on HBO. I will work as hard as I a can to win impressively on March 17th. Irish fans are going to love this fight because both fighters have the same entertaining style of fighting.”

Rodriguez is coming off of a 10-round unanimous decision victory (100-90 X 3) last October at MGM Grand at Foxwoods against previously unbeaten Will Rosinsky. Edwin’s other notable wins have been against Aaron Pryor, Jr., James McGirt and Marcus Upshaw.

“It doesn’t get any bigger in boxing than fighting on HBO in Madison Square Garden,” Rodriguez’ manager Larry Army remarked. “Edwin and Donovan will stand apart from the other world super middleweight contenders. We’re talking about two offensive powerhouses who will keep fans on the edge of their seats. The winner will be in a great position for a world title fight later this year. I don’t think that there will be a real ‘loser’ in this fight. Both guys are the type that fans love to watch and TV networks enjoy showcasing. Rodriguez-George has all the makings of a Gatti-Ward fight; they’re going to stand and exchange blows.”

Also rated No. 5 by the World Boxing Council (“WBC”) and No. 9 by the World Boxing Association (“WBA”), Rodriguez was a two-time U.S. national amateur champion in two weight classes, and is now the reigning United States National Boxing Council (“USNBC”) champion.

The 27-year-old George was born and raised in Chicago. The popular knockout specialist captured the vacant United States Boxing Association (“USBA”) title in his last fight, stopping Maxell Taylor in the eighth round last April in Chicago. George also holds impressive wins over Cornelius White and world title challenger Osumanu Adama.

“I don’t know a lot about him but I saw him fight the first time I fought on Showtime (April 30, 2010 – Rodriguez WKO6 Kevin Engel, George WDEC8 Adama),” Edwin noted. “He’s a good fighter…..but I’m better. He comes to fight and I do as well. I’m really looking forward to this fight. Not a lot of people get a second chance to fight on HBO, so I’m going to take full advantage of this huge opportunity.”

Tickets are priced at $505, $355, $205, $125 and $65 and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased through the Madison Square Garden Box Office or through Ticketmaster, at ticketmaster.com, or by calling (800) 745-3000. Call DiBella Entertainment at (212) 947-2577, or visit www.dbe1.com and @loudibella on Twitter for more information.

Team Rodriguez is also offering a junket package on a first come, first serve basis, of $110.00, which includes round-trip bus transportation and a ticket to the fight. Busses are scheduled to leave at 9 AM/ET from Worcester City Hall and will return right after the conclusion of the Martinez-Macklin fight. To book contact Rodriguez’ manager Larry Army at larmy@armyandarmy.com.

Both bouts will be shown exclusively on Channel 5.

Sheffield’s unbeaten hot prospect Kid Galahad will be vying for his first professional title when he takes on former British and Commonwealth champion and IBF world title challenger, Nottingham’s Jason “2 smooth” Booth for the WBC International Super Bantamweight title, which has been previously held by great fighters like Manny Pacquiao and Naseem Hamed.

Kid Galahad said “Jason Booth is an experienced operator, who has fought consistently at British and European title level for most of his career and also challenged for a world title back in 2010, but come the 18th February the millions of fight fans watching me live on Channel 5 will know who KID GALAHAD is and that I’m the next major star to come out of Sheffield.

“It’s an honour to be fighting for the prestigious WBC international title and I will look to emulate what Naseem and Manny have done.”

Middleweight sensation, Chris Eubank Jr, son of former world champion Chris Eubank, made his professional debut back in November last year on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s Commonwealth Heavyweight title defence said “I can’t wait to get back in the ring and start to show the world of boxing what I’m all about”

Promoter Mick Hennessy said. “I’m really proud to be showcasing these two brilliant young talents together on Channel 5 and with Kid Galahad headlining for the prestigious WBC International title in only his 11th fight, I believe he will show the boxing world why we have so much faith in him.

“There is great anticipation for Chris Eubank Jr’s second pro fight and rightfully so, he’s a special and unique talent who brings a real buzz to this great sport.”

“Obviously people have known about this great fight between Kid Galahad and Jason Booth for a while now but it was stipulated by the WBC and the Boxing Board that the fight could not be announced until Jason Booths medicals had cleared, which they have now.” Added Mick Hennessy

Top Middleweight Prospect Richard Pierson Ready For Battle February 17

Posted on | February 2, 2012 | No Comments

Paterson native and up-and-coming middleweight Richard Pierson will return to action Friday, February 17, 2012 as Gabe LaConte’s First Round Promotions presents a night of boxing at the Nutley High School in Nutley, New Jersey.

Following nearly a two-year layoff from the squared circle, Pierson (9-2, 6 KO) put on an impressive show in his comeback fight in June of 2010, stopping Reynaldo Rodriguez at 2:32 of the first round, handing the undefeated fighter his first loss.  But the young fighter has had problems with fights falling through and getting cancelled last minute.

Having fights fall through has been somewhat of a regular thing for Pierson, through no fault of his own.  Fighters and promoters have been avoiding the devastating puncher because in four fights he was supposed to be the “B” fighter, and he came in and knocked out the “A” fighter.

Along with his heavy hands, Pierson has caught the attention of boxing fans around the world because he has always stepped up to fight every time he was given the chance.  To his credit, he has never faced an opponent with a losing record.

Although not having a set opponent would present an issue in training for some fighters, Pierson doesn’t allow it to affect him.

“I haven’t changed how I prepare for a fight,” said Pierson.  “I train the way I always do; I focus on the win.  It is unpredictable.  I could have an opponent right now and a week before the fight that can change, so I just make sure that I’m in shape and able to go out there and do what I know I can do.”

Despite the problems Pierson has faced in the past with getting fights, this past year Pierson sought out the management of former heavyweight knockout artist and boxing trainer Lou Esa.

“Richard is probably one of the most devastating punchers I’ve ever worked with,” said Esa.  “This kid can hit you with either hand that’ll put you on Queer Street.  Just knowing a little bit about Richard has put me in a different state.  He has 10 children.  He takes care of them all by himself.  When you look up father in the dictionary, you see a picture of Richard Pierson.  He shows that kind of determination inside the boxing ring.  He is determined to win a championship, and I think he will.  This kid is not going away silently; in fact he isn’t going away at all.  He is someone to be reckoned with, and nobody wants to fight him now.”

In his young career Pierson has fought at top level venues, including the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas, Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, and several others.

When asked if he felt he had an advantage since he has always fought tougher competition, Pierson responded, “The thing with the tougher competition, it’s the same way I look at this fight coming up.  I go out there to fight, and look at each fighter as a human being, just like I am.  To me it doesn’t matter who you have fought or where you have fought…it depends on what you are bringing to the table.  But I don’t think it was an advantage for me to be fighting on big stages early in my career.  That’s one of the reasons why it has been so hard for me to get fights now.”

Going forward in 2012 Pierson hopes to stay active and consistently fight throughout the year.

The middleweight prospect currently trains at Ike and Randy’s gym in Paterson, New Jersey.

“Lastly I want to give a shot out to Lou Esa for being one of the only guys who was willing to take time out to try to get my career back and moving, and Maureen Shea, who always gave me great advice.  She is the female champion, and always gives me great advice and showed me the right way to go, and always kept me level-headed.  There were times that I’ve gotten down in boxing, and she is the one who brought me back.  With the two of them I believe my career is going to go on and my life is going to go how it should be.  And thanks to Blockstarzzent for getting my photo up on the promo flier for the fight.”

Tickets for Richard Pierson’s return to the ring cost $40 for general admission and $100 for a VIP table (which includes a buffet dinner) can be purchased directly through Lou Esa at Final Round Boxing and Fitness in Whippany, NJ or by calling (973) 885-7962.

For more information follow Richard Pierson on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Richard-TP-Pierson-Fan-Page/251954198152149.

MCGUIGAN: FRAMPTON HAS THE CLASS TO BE HUGE

Posted on | February 2, 2012 | No Comments

Legend expects protégé to fight Scott Quigg this year

Barry McGuigan believes it’s a big year for Carl Frampton after the Belfast boy’s stunning knockout of Kris Hughes in his Commonwealth Super-Bantamweight title defence on Saturday (January 28).

In an exclusive interview with Matchroom Boxing, McGuigan said that Frampton’s spectacular seventh round assault on Hughes live on Sky Sports is an early contender for knockout of the year.

‘The Jackal’s’ mentor said that the 24 year-old was brilliant that night at the York Hall in Bethnal Green and “handled the pressure well” he retained his title in his first defence.

He also told of how he is looking forward to the upcoming Scott Quigg fight with Jamie Arthur on Saturday night in Bolton where he will be a pundit for Sky Sports – and he expects Quigg to “do a number” on Arthur.

The former World Champion also revealed he had a “very interesting meeting” with Eddie Hearn and that “big news about Frampton will be out at the end of the week.”
