Posted on | December 13, 2011 | No Comments

Grand opening happens this Saturday; 3-day event also features Randy Couture

St. Louis, MO (USA): Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley is one of the brightest rising stars in all of MMA, and is also one of the crown jewels of the vaunted American Top Team. Undefeated at 9-0, he is deemed the de facto top contender for the vacant Strikeforce Welterweight Championship. In addition, Woodley is keeping busy outside of the cage, and this Saturday, December 17th, he will open ATT Evolution in St. Louis, Missouri, located at 9751 Manchester Road, Rock Hill, MO, 63119. This grand opening will keep off a three-day event that will include a charity toy drive, as well as “A Night with The Natural,” a special evening with UFC Hall of Famer and MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture. More information can be found athttp://www.ATTEvolution.com/

“It’s really almost beyond words to describe how awesome it is to see all of this coming together,” stated Woodley. “Opening a gym has always been a goal of mine, and I am extremely excited to see a dream like this come to fruition.”

Doors to the new ATT Evolution MMA and Family Fitness Center will officially open for the first time this Saturday, December 17th at 12 PM noon local time. The opening will run until 5 PM. The media and the public are encouraged to attend. Vendor booths will be on display for those in attendance. Once the gym opens, Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu classes will be offered, and taught by some of the best instructors in the world. And when a gym carries the American Top Team name, quality is of the highest priority.

The next day, Sunday, December 18th, “Takedown for Toys” will take place. The doors of ATT Evolution will be open from 2-5 PM, as an open house and charity toy drive will commence. Those in need will benefit from the drive. And finally, on Monday, December 19th, Randy “The Natural” Couture will make an appearance. Happening from 6-10 PM, Couture will be launching his new book, The Last Round. He will be signing copies of his book, as well as offering photo opportunities, with those in attendance. Tickets for that exciting part of the event are $85-$100, and can be purchased over the phone at (314) 716-2186, or through email attickets@attevolution.com.

“It’s such an honor to have a legend like Randy appear at the ATT Evolution opening,” continued “T-Wood.” “He’s such a great guy, and the fans love him. I’m sure everyone that comes is going to have a great time.”

Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley is one of the top competitors in the 170-pound division. Making the transition from prospect to legitimate threat in 2011, the two-time Division I All-American in wrestling bested both Tarec Saffidiene and Paul “Semtex” Daley. Undefeated at 9-0 with six finishes, the 29 year-old is poised to hopefully compete for the vacant Strikeforce 170-pound belt next. In the meantime, he’ll be focused on making ATT Evolution the preeminent gym in St. Louis.

Gotch Statue In Humboldt IA, A Reality. St Champ Steve Reimers Talks to Takedown

Gotch Statue In Humboldt A Reality

Friday, December 2nd, 2011 | NewspaperWrestling

The dream of erecting a statue of former world heavyweight wrestling champion Frank Gotch has become a reality.

After 15 months of planning, which included a tireless fundraising effort, the committee has raised enough funds to hire a sculptor to begin the project.

The Frank Gotch Statue Committee has signed a contract to hire sculptor Jeff Adams of Oregon, Illinois, to create a bronze statue of Gotch, to be placed at Bicknell Park in Humboldt, the historic training site for Frank Gotch in the early 1900s.

The eight-foot tall bronze statue of Gotch will be placed on a three-foot base. The project is expected to be completed by next summer, with a final date and unveiling ceremony yet to be determined.

The committee has raised enough money to begin the project, but there are still bricks available to any person or groups wanting to have their name on a brick that will be part of the landscaping around the museum. Among those who have purchased bricks are three Olympians and several former professional wrestling champions.

There are four levels of bricks that can be purchased:

  1. State Champion – name on a 4 inch by 8 inch brick for $250 donation;
  2. National Champion – Name on a 6 inch by 8 inch brick for a $250 donation;
  3. World Champion – name on an 8 inch by 8 inch brick for $500 donation;
  4. Gotch Champion – name on a cement bench near the statue, for a $3,000 donation.

Anyone wishing to donate may contact Mike Chapman at 641-791-3072 or send their check directly to Friends of the Park, Frank Gotch Project, c/o Tonya Harklau, 902 8th Avenue N., Humboldt, Iowa 50548.

Gotch, one of Iowa’s most famous citizens, was born and raised in Humboldt and never left, despite many offers to leave for life in the big city. Gotch won the heavyweight wrestling title in 1908 and never lost again, winning 88 consecutive matches before retiring in 1916 undefeated. Gotch died of kidney failure in his home at the age of 39, on December 16, 1917.

“We’re really excited to have finally gotten to this point where we have enough funding so we can hire a sculptor and get this process under way,” said committee chairman Steve Reimers. “It’s been a lot of hard work but everybody has pitched in to make this project a reality.”

“We appreciate the support and pledges we’ve received up to this point. Now that we have a sculptor signed, we need to keep our fundraising effort going so we can raise funds to really complete the landscaping around the statue and make some improvements to the park,” Reimers said.

“The committee should be commended for their dedication and hard work on this project, along with those in the community who have provided funding. Very impressive to see this become a reality. This will be a great thing for the community and will also grow and maintain the huge legacy Gotch left behind,” said committee chairman and Gotch historian Mike Chapman of Newton.

Gotch, known as the Michael Jordan of his own era in the early 1900s, was as well-known in his era, as any athlete since. Chapman, who has authored several books on Gotch, says Gotch is the best-known athlete, per era, in Iowa history, even when you compare him to Bob Feller, Nile Kinnick, Dan Gable or even Olympian Shawn Johnson.

“Gotch was the star of a play that went up and down the east coast and to Europe and drew sellout crowds,” Chapman said. “Frank Gotch was invited twice to the White House by President Teddy Roosevelt. Gotch was also wooed by young Hollywood to become a movie actor. Gotch was being courted to run for governor of Iowa in 1920.”

“Frank Gotch was the co-owner of an automobile company, owned nearly a thousand acres of prime farm land in Iowa and Minnesota and was on the board of directors of several companies,” Chapman said.

Committee members include Steve Reimers, Bruce Reimers, Tonya Harklau, Ron Wasoba, Maury Abens, Chad Beaman, Jana Bratland, Ken Bratland, Kent Clendenen, Jeff Dreyer, Todd Lee, Phil Monson, Larry Leibold, Steve Samuels, Kevin Tellier, all of Humboldt. Mike Chapman and Frank Gotch III, of Austin, Texas, are also members.

GOOSSEN TUTOR BOXERS FEATURED IN TOUGH TESTS UNDERNEATH WARD-FROCH

Los Angeles, CA (DEC. 12, 2011) – With super middleweight supremacy on the line when WBA Super Middleweight Champion Andre Ward takes on WBC titleholder Carl Froch in the SUPER SIX WORLD BOXING CLASSIC FINAL on Saturday Night, December 17 in Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, matchmaker Tom Brown of Goossen Tutor Promotions has put together an explosive undercard featuring several members of their talented stable against boxers with impressive records and high knockout ratios.

The night starts with the big boys of boxing, the Heavyweights.

Bowie Tupou (21-1, 16 KOs) of Los Angeles, takes on Donnell “The Real Touch of Sleep” Holmes, who hails from Ivanhoe, NC, in a scheduled ten-rounder of hard-hitting heavyweights with only one loss each and 45 knockouts on their records.

In his most recent outing back in May, Tupou known as “Bo” scored a devastating knockout win over top ten-ranked contender, Manny Quezada.  Holmes (33-1-2, 29 KOs) is coming off consecutive second-round stoppages following his only loss – a controversial technical decision to Brian Minto in a WBO-NABO Heavyweight title bout.

Light heavyweights take center stage with Edison Miranda (34-6, 29 KOs) and Cornelius White (17-1-1, 15 KOs) take on separate challenges.

Once-beaten White, a Houston, TX native is in his toughest test to date since his only loss when he goes against Cuban sensation Yordanis Despaigne (9-1, 4 KOs), of Coral Gables, FL.

White, dubbed “Da Beast,” rebounded from his only setback in a nationally televised loss by earning a split-decision victory over tough veteran Dhafir Smith back in July in the same Atlantic City venue in which he will meet Despaigne.  Born in Cuba, Despaigne had a distinguished amateur career which included wins in international competition over current top pros Andre Dirrell and Jean Pascal.  Despaigne won by a controversial disqualification over Edison Miranda in his last outing back in July.

Miranda, the Colombia native known as “Pantera” and a former middleweight and super middleweight world title challenger, will attempt to attract the ratings organizations as he makes his third straight outing as a light heavyweight in a scheduled 8-rounder against Kariz Kariuki of Tampa, FL.

The Kenyan native, Kariuki (24-9-2, 19 KOs) is on a 3-fight win streak, having most recently scored an impressive first round knockout in May of this year.

Light middleweight Boyd Melson (6-0, 3 KOs) will look to continue making a name for himself in a scheduled 6-round outing against Daniel Lugo (9-1, 4 KOs).  Currently a Captain in the Army Reserve, the  “Rainmaker” Melson uses boxing for much more than himself, donating his earnings toteamfighttowalk.com and justadollarplease.org.

Hometown heavyweights John Lennox (7-1, 3 KOs) and Jeremiah Witherspoon (2-1, 1 KO) will showcase their boxing prowess in a scheduled four-round attraction.

In a special welterweight attraction Great Britan’s rising star Kell “Special K” Brook (25-0, 17 KOs) takes on Tennessee native, Luis Galarza (18-2, 14 KOs) in a 10-round bout promoted byMatchroom Sport.

Kell holds the WBO and WBA Intercontinental welterweight titles and is coming off a 6-round TKO victory over Rafal Jackiewicz this past October.

Tickets for SUPER SIX WORLD BOXING CLASSIC FINAL and live undercard are priced at $300, $200, $100 and $50 and can be purchased at the Boardwalk Hall Box Office, or by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 736-1420 or online at ticketmaster.com.

Promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions, Matchroom Sport and Antonio Leonard Promotions, in association with Caesars Atlantic City and sponsored by Corona.

GUERRERO: I PICKED IT, KHAN LOST NOW GIVE ME MAYWEATHER
By David “Los Gatos” Rosenburg ~ BoxingScene.com

GHOST UPPERCUT
Photo By Daisy Rosas

On Saturday afternoon, former champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero made a perfect prediction for the big weekend fight.  He selected Lamont Peterson to win a close split decision over Amir Khan to capture the WBA/IBF junior welterweight titles in Washington, DC.  The played out like Guerrero pictured, with Khan starting fast but quickly going on his bike and Peterson rallying forward to score points.  After twelve rounds, Peterson pulled off the upset – by split decision.

BoxingScene.com:  Robert, you’ve been amazing with your fight predictions of late.  What are your thoughts about the outcome of Khan vs. Peterson?

I’ve always been a student of the game and styles make fights.  I picked Victor Ortiz to beat Andre Berto.  I said Marquez would beat Pacquiao and now I’m right on with my prediction of Peterson beating Khan.

BoxingScene.com:  Peterson was hitting Khan with many flush shots.  Do you now feel that Amir has a better chin?

Khan is easy to hit.  He’s got fast hands but uses his legs too much.  Peterson fought the fight of his life and I don’t take any credit away from him but if I hit Khan flush, its good night Irene!  Continue Reading…
