NEW YORK (Dec. 9, 2011) – Through the last two years, no four men have been closer to the action in the Super Six World Boxing Classic than SHOWTIME announcers Gus Johnson, Al Bernstein,Antonio Tarver and Jim Gray. Appropriately, the entire team will again sit ringside on Saturday, Dec. 17 as Andre Ward and Carl Froch battle for super middleweight supremacy in The Final LIVE onSHOWTIME^® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

 

Each member of the Super Six broadcast team offered their commentary on the historic bout.

“We’re witnessing two fighters who haven’t reached their peak yet. This fight is going to go a long way in determining what path they take. The winner has the opportunity to launch into super stardom at 168. The winner will have the chance to potentially become a household name moving forward.

 

“These two men are meeting each other at the right time. They’re young. They’re strong. They’re hungry, humble and – maybe most importantly – they really want to test themselves. It’s tailor made. Ward-Froch will be cataclysmic.”

 

Al Bernstein, Expert Analyst

“Andre Ward is the consummate boxer-puncher. We thought Mikkel Kessler was the most skilled fighter in the tournament and Andre dominated him. In this match, Ward must bring the kind of ring generalship that allowed Andre Dirrell to do well against Froch – even in losing. The Ward jab needs to be established early and he must punch in combination, while mixing in just enough lateral movement.

 

“Carl Froch is a much more nuanced fighter than we expected to see in this tournament. He is a better pure boxer than he’s given credit for being. He showed that in wins over Arthur Abraham and Glen Johnson. He also has an iron chin. Ward will not attack him like Johnson and Abraham so Froch will need to push the pace more. He, too, must establish the jab early and then land his right hand behind it. He has not used his excellent uppercut as much in the Super Six; this would be a good time to bring it out of mothballs.”

 

 

Antonio Tarver, Expert Analyst

“The key for Andre Ward is to stay within himself, keep boxing and keep winning the rounds. I think there is a lot of pressure on him to do something exciting, to do something great, but he can’t play into that hype. He must stay disciplined. I think that’s the key word when I look at what he needs for this battle: discipline.

 

“For Froch, he’s going to have to cut the ring off. He’s going to have to limit Andre Ward’s movement. Carl is going to have to press him and I think he’s going to have to be the aggressor. He needs to make it a fight instead of a boxing match. Froch will have to corner Ward and make him fight with his back against the ropes. And if he can do that and sustain that kind of attack, press him mentally and physically, Froch will give Ward the hardest fight he’s ever had. If anybody gets knocked out in this fight, I see Froch catching Ward.

 

“I really feel like the winner of this fight will write his own ticket as to what he’d like to do in the near future so there is a lot at stake. I’m looking forward to it. We could be looking at the Fighter of the Year. When you look at what they’ve gone through, you’ve got to put Ward or Froch in the category for Fighter of the Year if one man can win convincingly.”

“The key for Ward will be to be patient. He needs to fight at his pace and not be lured in by Froch to brawl. He must also know that Froch has a great chin, and not be frustrated that Froch may not budge with his best shots.

 

“The key for Froch would be to somehow be able to get Ward to brawl. To get him into wild exchanges and catch him. Froch is tough and he has the ability to take fighters out of their plan and create opportunities.”

The Reemergence of Bare Knuckle Boxing

Bareknuckle fighting has been going over for hundreds of years as a means of settling disputes between families as well as a sport.  The first registered bareknuckle boxing champion of England was crowned in 1719 when James Figg claimed the title.

Over the years the sport expanded and a handful of assorted champions passed the title around, with the last sanctioned bout taking place in 1889 as John L. Sullivan defeated Jake Kilrain in an epic 75 round battle.  Though the sport had evolved into a form of competition, travelling families have continued the tradition of settling family disputes purely through bareknuckle fighting.

Recently Ian Palmer released the film Knuckle which followed the lives of an Irish Traveler community over 12 years.  Starring renowned Irish Traveler and undefeated bareknuckle fighter James Quinn, Knuckle is an in-depth look at the lives these families lived and the epic ongoing bareknuckle wars that were fought throughout the years.

As Knuckle created a lot of buzz in the UK with its release this past summer, Americans got introduced to the world of bareknuckle boxing as former 7 time cruiserweight champion Bobby Gunn and Richard Stewart fought for the vacant world heavyweight bareknuckle boxing championship, last held by John L. Sullivan.

In this first sanctioned bareknuckle boxing bout since in nearly 123 years, Gunn once again displayed his winning ways and knockout power, ending the fight in round 3 via knockout.

Within recent months of the movie release and championship fight, the buzz and popularity for bareknuckle boxing has taken off exponentially.  Websites, blogs and pages have been created throughout the online world in support of seeing bareknuckle boxing become as big as traditional boxing and MMA.  One of the top bareknuckle groups can be found on Facebook.  Rage!! Bareknuckle Boxing Group is comprised of bareknuckle fighters and enthusiasts who share the same passion and support for this growing sport.  It is a common place for fight fans to talk about all the latest news in the bareknuckle boxing world.

The reason for the recent taking off of bareknuckle boxing is that it offers the science of boxing coupled with the excitement of a MMA fight.  A common misconception is that bareknuckle boxing is simply a street fight or a back alley brawl.  But anyone who has ever witnessed a bout has seen that it is a smart fight fought between two professionals; not two inebriated fellas outside of a pub.

After capturing the STRIKEFORCE middleweight championship by defeating Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in September, Luke Rockhold (fighting out of San Jose, Calif.) makes his first title defense against one of the toughest in the business in Jardine. A product of the famed American Kickboxing Academy, Rockhold (8-1) is surrounded by some of the most experienced fighters in the world, who should help in providing a well-balanced training camp and gameplan in order for the 26-year-old to defeat his veteran opponent.

 

“Jardine is a big name who’s fought a lot of tough guys in this sport,” Rockhold said. “I’m not going to sleep on him or this opportunity. This isn’t just another fight for me, I’ve wanted my chance to prove I’m a champion and a five-round title defense is the way to do it. Keith Jardine (fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.) is widely considered one of the toughest and most unorthodox fighters that the sport has ever seen. “The Dean of Mean,” who trains at Greg Jackson’s MMA, is a UFC veteran holding wins over Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin and Brandon Vera.  The Ultimate Fighter^® season 2 contestant would like to cap off his impressive résumé with a world championship.

 

“I’ve completely rededicated myself to this sport,” said Jardine, whose record currently stands at 16-10-2. “I’ve sacrificed a lot to be where I am and I want to make the most of it. A title shot against Rockhold is a huge opportunity that I’m not going to waste. Luke’s a tough kid and he beat a tough opponent in ‘Jacare’. but he doesn’t fight like I do and he’s never had an opponent push him like I will. This will end with me imposing my will on him in a way he’s never seen.”

 

With a record of 18-8, 1 NC, Robbie Lawler (fighting out of Gilbert, Ariz.) is a veteran of STRIKEFORCE, UFC and PRIDE, and captured the middleweight championship during his time in EliteXC. A frequent training partner of UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes, “Ruthless” often relies on his dominant wrestling knowledge to control his opponent and secure the victory, though he also holds knockout victories over Frank Trigg, Matt Lindland and Scott Smith.

 

Though new to MMA fans in the U.S., Adlan Amagov (fighting out of Fairfield, N.J.) has had an extremely successful career in Russia. Only 25 years old, “Borz” currently trains under the tutelage of Mike Constantino at AMA Fight Club alongside UFC standouts Jim and Dan Miller, as well as Charlie Brenneman. Owner of a 9-1-1 record, Amagov knows what a victory over the more experienced Lawler can do for his middleweight title hopes and is looking to keep his winning streak intact by utilizing his effective striking and Sambo skills.

 

One of the most vocal and recognizable personalities in the sport, “King” Mo Lawal (fighting out of San Jose, Calif.) steps back into the cage for the first time since September when he knocked out Roger Gracie in the final seconds of the first round. The former NCAA Division I wrestler also bears heavy hands, having ended six of his fights via KO to bring his overall record to 8-1. The former STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight champ is ready to put gold back around his waist, but must first get through undefeated rising prospect Lorenz Larkin (fighting out of Riverside, Calif.), whose record currently stands at 12-0. In his career, “The Monsoon” has scored eight knockout victories and hopes his ninth comes on Jan. 7.

 

At just 25 years old with a record of 11-3, Tarec Saffiedine (fighting out of Temecula, Calif.) has no doubt made a name for himself in the welterweight division, engaging in wars with Tyron Woodley, Scott Smith and James Terry. A versatile fighter who trains with UFC star Dan Henderson, “Sponge” has put the division on notice that he wants the belt more than anything. His title hunt continues when he takes on 21-7 Tyler Stinson (fighting out of Kansas City, Kan.). “The Evolution” was last seen knocking out Eduardo Pamplona at the 0:15 mark of the first round in July at STRIKEFORCE^®: FEDOR vs. HENDERSON. Expect Stinson, a proven striker, to go for a similar ending in this bout when these two meet in Las Vegas.

Amateur Boxing Returns To LA Boxing In Paramus

To close out the year with a bang, LA Boxing in Paramus will be hosting a night of amateur boxing next Friday, December 16.

Amateur boxing not only gives kids the opportunity to work their way up the rankings and gain exposure, but for the kids who don’t go into the Olympics or turn professional, amateur boxing instills a great work ethic in them and is a strong character builder.

 

“This is the last USA Boxing event of the year, for New Jersey,” said Mike Rizzo, Competition Boxing Coach/Trainer of LA Boxing in Paramus.  “It is going to be a big card, one of the biggest of the year.  There’s going to be around 20 bouts or so with all different weight classes and divisions.”

 

Mike Rizzo has been around the fight game since the age of five, and has been training up-and-coming fighters for several years now.  Adamant about spreading awareness of amateur boxing, he coordinated the first of LA Boxing’s amateur shows earlier this year, and is aiming to make it a recurring even.

 

“Our show in May was great, and looking forward, we would like to have two shows a year,” said Rizzo.  “We are lucky to have fighters from some of the top gyms fighting on the show, and with it being the last of the year, we are going to do it as big as we can.”

 

Top local amateurs are expected to go to battle as they look to continue to make a name for themselves and work their way up the amateur circuit.

 

Amateur boxing is more than about fighting, it’s about the kids.  It teaches them camaraderie that is felt amongst boxers of all levels, and can help them establish contacts both in and out of the ring that are invaluable.
