Promotion to Air Every Friday Night; Feature Five Tournaments

 

CHICAGO, Ill. (December 5, 2011) — After a historic fifth season that saw Michael Chandler capture the Bellator Lightweight Title in a four-round classic that many critics labeled fight-of-the-year, and Eduardo Dantas, Douglas Lima and Alexander Shlemenko all earning tournament championships, Bellator will open their sixth season on Friday, March 2^nd from a soon to be announced location. The premiere will mark the first time Bellator has aired on Friday nights.

“Our focus was to find the right night, where the largest number of MMA fans could enjoy the show,” Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “We’ve been discussing this move with our partners at Viacom for months. When we looked at the alternatives, we agreed that Fridays provided a great night for us to reach MMA fans with our live, real sport, tournament events every week.”

Bellator’s Season 6 will feature five tournaments, each loaded with world-class talent from across the globe as well the potential for six World Title fights.

In arguably the deepest division within Bellator, eight featherweights will go to battle looking to earn their right to challenge for the belt.

The lightweights are back, and will be gunning for newly crowned Bellator Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler after his fight of the year with Eddie Alvarez (Watch Here: http://bit.ly/uoaoCE).

Fresh off a welterweight tournament that saw Douglas Lima punch his ticket to a guaranteed title shot against reigning Bellator Welterweight Champion Ben Askren, eight 170 pounders will compete to earn their title shot against the winner of this tremendous world title fight, and Middleweights collide as the promotion searches for a challenger to take on the winner of Lombard vs. Shlemenko II for the Bellator Middleweight Title. Bellator Season Five Tournament winner Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko will battle Lombard during Season 6 in a rematch of their third season showdown where Lombard successfully defended his title with a unanimous decision victory.

A fifth tournament will also be featured in Season 6 with an announcement coming shortly.

Mansour, Delgado & Hendrix Lifts WBF Titles

Amir “Hardcore” Mansour won the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental Heavyweight title on Friday night, December 2, at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Dover, Delaware as he scored a sixth round stoppage over former world title-challenger Epifanio Mendoza from Columbia.

Rapidly building a reputation as one of the most spectacular heavyweights around, Mansour came out in his usual all-guns-blazing fashion in the first round, while Mendoza boxed defensively and tried to counterpunch when Mansour missed.

This pattern continued in the second, and Mansour quickly established that he was the stronger of the two as Mendoza was forced to use his legs more than his fists. Mansour hurt, and almost knocked down, Mendoza in rounds three and five, and at this point it looked as if the end was near.

Mansour was getting stronger as the fight progressed, while Mendoza was clearly tiring. The end came at 1:17 of the sixth, when Mendoza was caught in a corner taking several punches without being able to offer anything in return and his trainer threw in the towel to rescue his boxer.

With the victory Mansour improved his professional record to 16-0 (12), and continues his quest for a world title shot in the future. Mendoza dropped to 32-13-1 (28).

On the same night in Atlanta, Georgia, two new WBF North American Champions were crowned as Paul Delgado captured the vacant Super Welterweight title and Tyrese Hendrix took home the Welterweight strap on a show promoted by Sports Fan Properties, Shea Bailey Promotions and Delgado Boxing Promotions.

At the Georgia World Congress Center´s Thomas Murphy Ballroom, Delgado proved too classy for veteran Ruben Galvan and scored a shutout unanimous decision by scores of 100-89, 100-90 and 100-90. The former world-title-challenger is now 26-11-1 (4), and Galvan goes to 27-20-4 (10).

In a more competitive and closer contest, at least on the scorecards, Tyrese Hendrix was awarded a majority decision over tough campaigner Chris Gray. Judge Robert Ezor had them even at 95-95, but was overruled by Edward Kanner and Irwin Deutsch who had Hendrix ahead by 97-93 and 98-92 respectively.

As the new WBF North American champion Hendrix took his professional ledger to 21-3-1 (9), and Gray is now 13-17-1 (1).

Mansour and Mendoza thrilled the sellout crowd at Dover Downs with Mansour throwing some wicked shots to the head and body of Mendoza.  Mendoza showed surprisingly good defense and decent counter punching ability.  Tensions grew during the fight as both landed shots after the bell that nearly incited a brawl.

In the sixth, Mansour landed a huge flurry of punches that forced the corner of Mendoza to throw in the towel.

Mansour, ranked number seven by the WBO raised his mark to 16-0 with twelve knockouts and he indicated the he is ready to take on anybody in the top ten.

Mendoza fought well but he falls to 32-13-1.

In the co-feature, Light Heavyweight Anthony Caputo Smith, had a few tense moments but scored an incredible final round stoppage over Douglas Okola in a six round bout.

Smith was dropped and then cut badly over his right eye and it was looking like his perfect mark would be falling by the wayside.  In the final round Okola walked into a huge left hook that put him down and out and in an instant Smith scored the knockout.

Smith is now 12-0 with ten knockouts.

Veteran Dorin Spivey scored his 40^th professional victory with a solid six round unanimous decision over rugged and tough as nails Angel Rios in a Lightweight bout.

Spivey boxed well by putting some solid combinations together.  Rios never had any quit in him and kept coming forward and even buckled Spivey during the fight.

Spivey will now look to jump into the rankings when he takes on Victor Vasquez on February 4^th.  Ironically, Vasquez was ringside calling the action with Marc Abrams during this bout.

Mike Tiberi made it 18-1 with a solid six round unanimous decision over Puerto Rico’s Emill Gonzalez in a Super Middleweight bout.

QUEBEC CITY, Que. – Former UFC fighter Pete (The Secret Weapon) Spratt stopped Quebec welterweight Martin (The Hammer) Grandmont in the second round of the Instinct 2 MMA main event Friday night.   An emotional Spratt (24-21) came into the fight just hours after his grandmother passed away Thursday. The 40-year-old Texan elected to fight anyway. “This was for you grandmamma,” said an emotional Spratt, who had lost five of his last eight fights prior to Friday. “I knew she would want me to come out and fight hard and that’s what I did,” he added. Grandmont, a native of Lac Megantic, via Drummondville, Que., tried to punish Spratt with kicks in a back-and-forth first round. But the American finished strongly, knocking Grandmont down late in the round with a right and left to the head. Spratt, a southpaw, looked down at his left hand in the second round as if hurt. He threw it sparingly after that but managed to take Grandmont down later in the round. Grandmont fought his way back up but went down after eating an uppercut in the clinch. Spratt finished him off four punches later to end the fight at four minutes of the second round. Grandmont (12-6) was coming off a knockout win in October when he stopped Muay Thai veteran William Sriyapai with a head kick at the inaugural Instinct show in Montreal. Grandmont, 29, was originally slated to meet Phil (The New York Bad Ass) Baroni but the former UFC and Pride veteran was forced out with an injury.   In the co-main event at the Pavillon de la Jeunesse, American welterweight Brandon (Rukus) Thatch (6-1) made short work of France’s (Dexter) Patrick Vallee (7-2-1).   Thatch caught the Frenchman with an early uppercut then finished him off after just 15 seconds for his sixth first-round win. “I’m sure I’ll get my day but until then I’m going to keep doing what I do,” said Thatch.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Dec. 3, 2011) – In the first defense of his International Boxing Federation bantamweight world title,Abner Mares (23-0-1, 13 KOs) left little doubt this time that he is still the IBF king at 118 pounds with an electrifying unanimous decision over Joseph King Kong Agbeko (28-4, 22 KOs) in the main event Saturday night onSHOWTIME®.

           

Mares, of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif., by way of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, also took home the World Boxing Council Silver bantamweight belt with scores of 118-110 on all three judges’ scorecards in the 12-round rematch of their controversial August fight which Mares won by majority decision in Las Vegas.

 

In an equally thrilling co-feature, Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno (31-1-1, 11 KOs) of Panama City, Panama, was victorious in his United States and SHOWTIME debut defending his World Boxing Association Bantamweight Supertitle with a 12-round unanimous decision against former two-time world champion Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan(37-4-1, 27 KOs) of Sydney, Australia, by scores of 116-111, 117-110, 120-107.

 

Cut above the eye by an Agbeko jab in the second round, Mares relied on the handy work of cutman Miguel Diaz. “I asked Miguel, ‘Are we going to stop the fight?’ And he was like ‘What? I’m the best. No way we’re stopping this fight,’ “said Mares, who landed 183 power punches to 107 for Agbeko. “(The blood) bothered me a few times because he was only going for my eye, but I knew I could get through it.”

 

SHOWTIME announcer Al Bernstein scored the fight 116-112 for Mares while Antonio Tarver had it 115-113 in favor of the champ.

 

“Tonight they saw the real Abner Mares,” Mares said. “I’ve beat him once and now I’ve beaten him again.”

 

Asked what was next by SHOWTIME’S Jim Gray, the 26-year-old Mares responded, “Maybe Nonito Doniaire. Whoever they want to put in front of me. I might even move up to 122. Tonight the world saw my true boxing skills. I knew I was winning the whole fight.”

 

The 31-year-old Agbeko, who hails from the Bronx, N.Y., and is originally from Accra, Ghana, said he was asked in pre-fight press conferences if he had to knock Mares out to win in Mares’ home state. “I always told them no,” Agbeko said. “If I win I deserve to win. Right now, I don’t have anything to protest. I don’t feel like a loser. I think this decision is unfair. You shouldn’t have to knock out your opponent to win in California.”

 

The victim of several low blows that weren’t called in the first fight, Agbeko added, “I thought I fought better tonight than the last fight.”

 

The esteemed referee Dr. Lou Moret, a 28-year veteran, warned Mares just once of a low blow in the sixth round.

 

In the biggest fight of his career, the 26-year-old Moreno dominated Darchinyan connecting on 216 total punches to 101 in the 12-round win.

 

“If (the public) didn’t know about him before tonight, they do now,” Bernstein said of Moreno.

 

“I’m extremely happy tonight,” Moreno said. “I will show more in the future. I was a little nervous because it’s my first fight in the States. He couldn’t catch me tonight.”

 

Said Darchinyan: “I just couldn’t figure him out. I was missing the whole time. I couldn’t find him and that was the fight. I knew he was just going to go for points. I knew this but still I lost the fight.”
