WBF Announce Gaelic/Celtic Title

Posted on | December 2, 2011 | No Comments

Celtic/Gaelic Nations

The World Boxing Federation has announced the creation of a regional European title which will pique the interest of boxers, and fans worldwide, as the new WBF Gaelic/Celtic Championships will be open to any boxer from a Gaelic or Celtic nation or heritage.

Of course, the six original Celtic nations are Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and the Isle of Man, however Gaelic people also have roots in parts of Spain, Portugal, France and Nova Scotia. In any case, regardless of citizenship, Gaelic and Celtic parentage is the mark of eligibility for these titles, which are about to start by January 1, 2012.

Credit for the creation of these championships goes to new WBF Irish Republic Representative David Walshe, who reasons:

“The criteria to qualify for an Irish title restricts many non-Irish-based boxers the opportunity to fight for what is seen in their eyes as a very important title because of their Irish lineage. The WBF Gaelic Celtic Championships, however, includes hundreds of boxers all over the world and gives them a chance to box for an Irish-connected title.”

WBF European Coordinator Olaf Schroeder, backed with the support of WBF President Howard Goldberg and WBF Vice President Jean Marcel Nartz, is happy for the World Boxing Federation to fill this gap and be the leading sanctioning organization in this area.

“David (Walshe) and myself believe that our Gaelic/Celtic titles will soon become a serious challenger to the Commonwealth belts, because the quality of boxers eligible is of a much higher standard,” Schroeder said, “and thus provide a direct path to a shot at the WBF world title.”

Plus Dirrell and St-Juste Predict the Results of the Super Six Final

While Avalos and Romero Give Their Picks for Mares-Agbeko Showdown

NOTE: WEIGHTS (Dec. 1, 2011) – Unbeaten, top-ranked super middleweight Anthony Dirrell tipped the scales at 167 pounds and fellow world-ranked southpaw Renan St-Juste weighed in at 166 ½ pounds during Thursday’s weigh in at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif.

Dirrell (23-0, 20 KOs), of Flint, Mich., and St-Juste (23-2-1, 15 KOs), of Canada, will square off in the 12-round main event onShoBox: The New Generation on FridayDec2, live on SHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

The telecast will originate from Chumash Casino Resort in Santa YnezCalif., just one night before the highly anticipated rematch between International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight titleholder Abner Mares and Joseph King Kong Agbeko on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING

Hard-hitting ShoBox alum Chris Avalos measured 121 ¾ ounds and Jhonatan Romero weighed in at 121 pounds.  Avalos (19-1, 15 KOs), of Lancaster, Calif., will make a ShoBox-record sixth appearance against Colombia’s Romero (19-0, 12 KOs) in a 10-round co-feature battle of up-and-coming super bantamweights.

Prior to Thursday’s weigh in, the world-ranked super middleweights gave their picks for the upcoming Super Six World Boxing Classic Final, a World Championship Unification, on Saturday, Dec. 17 on SHOWTIME®, while Romero gave his predictions for Saturday’s Mares-Agbeko bantamweight world championship showdown and the bantamweight world championship co-feature between Anselmo Moreno and Vic Darchinyan. (Picks are below).

Dirrell is ranked No. 1 in the World Boxing Council (WBC) and No. 3 in the World Boxing Association (WBA). St-Juste, the WBC’s No. 3-rated contender, represents the first top-10 fighter Dirrell has faced. The bout will serve as a title eliminator for the WBC super middleweight title currently held by Super Six World Boxing Classic finalist Carl Froch

Friday’s event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions.

What the fighters had to say on Thursday:

ANTHONY DIRRELL

“It’s going to be a big fight. I’m ready mentally and physically. I’ve been training hard, working with my brother (Andre) and the team, Team Dirrell. I’m ready.”

“I’m definitely ready to go 12 rounds if I have to. The commentators always say, ‘Are they ready to go 12?’ If you can do it in the gym, if you are physically and mentally ready, you can do it. If you’re in shape, you can do it.”

“If I can get my opponent out of there, I’m going to get them out of there. I’m not going to hang in there more rounds than I have to and give this guy a chance.”

Super Six pick: “Andre Ward on a points decision.”

RENAN ST-JUSTE

“I know Dirrell is an undefeated fighter. He says he’s hungry but I know I’m prepared. I’m treating this like a world championship.

“Being at 168 is better for me. It was difficult for me to make 160. I walk around in the 180s. At 168, I can keep my muscle and not worry about the weigh-in.

“The winner tomorrow will be No. 1 in the WBC but I’m not looking past Friday night.”

Super Six pick: “Ward, by a very little bit in a tight fight.”

CHRIS AVALOS

“I didn’t know until today that I’m the only fighter with six ShoBox appearances. I love the series but I think it’s time to move on to the Championship level.

“I’ll give fans a little of both tomorrow. I’ll box and I’ll brawl. We’ll see what happens.

“I’ve been taking shots for my hand. They helped it a lot. It’s fine. I could knock a guy out just as easily as I could before the injury.

“If I win tomorrow, I’d like to see Abner Mares or Vic Darchinyan in the ring. I don’t have any picks for Saturday night. I just hope the winners want to give me a shot at their belts.”

JHONATAN ROMERO

“I think it’s better to come in here as the opponent. I’m relaxed. I’m confident. What could be better than beating a guy everyone knows?

“Only God, the promoter and my managers can tell what the future holds for me. I know that all I can do is win and better things will come for me after.”

Mares-Agbeko prediction: Mares

Moreno-Darchinyan prediction: Darchinyan

Curt Menefee will call the Dec. 2 ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood serving as expert analyst. Gordon Hallis the executive producer of ShoBox with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Gunn Stops Jackson, Retains Bareknuckle Title

Posted on | December 2, 2011 | No Comments

The scene last night for Bobby Gunn’s first title defense of his bareknuckle boxing championship was something out of a movie–a large open room in a warehouse; no glamorous arena, no ring, no concession stands…last night wasn’t about entertainment, it was about one thing–fighting.

When Ernest Jackson made his walk through the crowd as he prepared himself to go to war, he was overwhelmed by a sea of Bobby Gunn’s supporters, roughly 130 or so in total.  The cheers and praise for Gunn didn’t affect Jackson as he waited for the fight to begin.

Leading up to the fight you wouldn’t think Bobby Gunn was about to throw hands with a skilled undefeated fighter.  He appeared calm and collective as if he was simply going to work.

The fight lasted just over 8 minutes, with Bobby Gunn being the victor by way of KO.  With this win he showed the fight world two things–that he is the undisputed world heavyweight bareknuckle boxing champion and what true bareknuckle boxing is all about.

When the video of the fight is released in a few days, fight fans will be able to experience a true bareknuckle boxing match.  The haters and critics who call the sport nothing more than a barbaric street fight between two bums will quickly be silenced as they see two professionals at their trade strategically exchanging hands.

Bareknuckle boxing combines the skill and technique of boxing with the excitement of MMA into a thought-out war which is reminiscent of a chess match.

“In order to be successful in a bareknuckle fight, you have to be smart,” said Bobby Gunn.  “You can’t just walk in and start swinging away wildly; you will either break your hands or leave yourself open to get laid out.  Fighters only have a 3 ½” gap to strike, from the eyes to the nose, around the side of the temple.  When you throw a shot to the jaw you have to be careful to hit the side of the jaw.  The teeth can split your hands wide open, and if you hit too high above the eyebrows you can shatter your hand on the forehand.  Bareknuckle boxing is not about wasting shots throwing wild punches; it’s about precise, accurate shots that are effective.”

The fight last night wasn’t about one man wanting to hurt another and beat him unconscious—both warriors showed tremendous skill and professionalism before and after the fight—it was about which man was going to be the better fighter.  The bareknuckle boxing championship last night showed the true form of boxing; picking and choosing your shots and waiting patiently for your openings.

And upon completion of the fight, both men walked away unharmed; a few bruises at worst.  Gunn’s title defense last night was more than him continuing to solidify himself as one of the greatest bareknuckle fighters of all time; it also spread awareness of the trueness of the sport of bareknuckle boxing and the potential it has to become as mainstream as gloved boxing and MMA.

Bobby Gunn displayed the class and delivered the performance of a champion.

“It was a tough fight,” said Gunn.  “I give all the credit in the world to Ernest Jackson.  He is a true warrior and a tough, tough fighter, and I thank him again for stepping up to fight.  It means the world to me that everybody came out to support me.  I have the best team, family and fans in the world.”

The full fight video will be released within the next few days.
