Brother vs. Brother at ‘Evolution 2’ on December 10 in Clovis, New Mexico

Posted on | November 22, 2011 | No Comments

Clovis, NM. – November 22, 2011 – Over the years MMA has seen its fair share of conflict between brothers, such as the highly publicized feud between MMA legends (and adopted siblings) Ken and Frank Shamrock. The toxic family feuds, fueled by years of sibling rivalry, would undoubtedly produce memorable battles in cage, yet a true brother vs. brother MMA bout has yet to come to fruition, that is, until now. New Mexico based Evolution Combat Sports Championship will soon make their mark, by becoming the first fight promotion to officially deliver a bonafide brother vs. brother bout in the professional MMA arena.

On Saturday, December 10, 2011 Jeremiah Paco ‘The Punisher’ Castillo and his brother Angel Castillo are slated to headline ‘Evolution 2.’ The event marks the highly anticipated return of‘Evolution’, the show that launched the now popular regional MMA promotion. The event will take place at the Curry County Event Center in Clovis, New Mexico. The promotion is thrilled to mark the return of ‘Evolution’ by featuring the first ever brother vs. brother headliner.

According to Martin Singleterry, founder of Evolution Combat Sports Championships, “We are thrilled to bring back our high profile ‘Evolution’ shows.  The Saturday night shows are a perfect addition to our ‘Friday Night Fight’ series. We have a stellar event planned for December. Fans are in for a real treat! Not only is the card stacked with New Mexico’s top contenders, fans will get to witness the first ever brother vs. brother pro MMA battle!”

Singleterry went on to say, “Although the Castillo brothers may not be house hold names on a national level, they are well-known and respected within the regional fight scene …and when it comes to their high octane personal vendetta …well, heh… it’s no secret. I thought, what better way for these two warriors to settle the score than in their element, in the cage, in front of their fans. I approached the Castillo brothers about the match-up and the rest is history.”

On December 10, the Castillo brothers will go head-to-head in a 130-pound catch weight bout, which according to many, has fight-of-the-night implications. In addition to the highly anticipated brother vs. brother headliner, ‘Evolution 2’ will also feature a co-main event bout between two of New Mexico’s best female fighters.  Knockout artist Heather “Hurricane” Clark drops down to the 115lb division to take #10 ranked Chelsea “Italian Princess” Colarelli, in a fight that is sure to be a crowd pleaser. The full fight card will be announced soon. Fight fans will not want to miss this event!

‘Evolution 2’ will take place on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the Curry County Events Center in Clovis, New Mexico. Doors open at 5:00pm CT. Fights start at 6:00pm CT. Tickets are on sale now! Prices range from $12.00 for grandstand seating to $35.00 for VIP. To purchase event tickets, please log on to www.evolutioncombatsports.com . Tickets can also be purchased at the venue the night of the event.

TORONTO (November 22, 2011) – One of Ontario’s best amateur boxers, undefeated featherweight prospect Tyler Asselstine, steps-up in class December 10 for his first scheduled eight-round bout against Frenchman Philippe Frenois at Bell Centre in Montreal.

In his last action this past June in Ireland, Frenois (14-4-1) went the full 12-rounds, albeit in a losing effort, against undefeated Patrick Hyland for the World Boxing Federation featherweight title. The French boxer has never been stopped.

Asselstine’s amateur pedigree includes being a member of the 2009 Canadian National Team, representing his country in numerous International matches, as well as being the 2010 Ringside World Championships gold medalist. Since completing a standout amateur career (70-10), the 25-year-old Asselstine (7-0, 5 KOs) from Kingston, Ontario has taken to the professional ranks by storm. The gifted southpaw, who started boxing at 18 after being a kick-boxer, has been a pro prizefighter for only 13 months but he has already had seven fights.

In some ways, Tyler is a smaller, younger version of his boxing idol, IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute, sort of a “Bute-light.” Asselstine’s promoter, Hennessy Sports, believes Tyler has what it takes to be the next great Canadian boxer.

“He’s only 25 and we think, to say the least, Tyler has a very, very bright boxing future,” his promoter Adam Harris (Hennessy Sports) said. “He has been totally dominant in his first seven pro fights. We’re keeping him as busy as possible because all he really   lacks at this stage of his young professional career is ring experience.”

Asselstine-Frenois is on a GYM Promotions card headed by Adonis Stevenson vs. Aaron Pryor, Jr. for the NABA/NABO super middleweight titles and a WBC International middleweight championship bout between David Lemieux and Joachine Alcine.

Other members of Hennessy Sports’ growing stables of champions, contenders and prospects include undefeated Commonwealth and British heavyweight champion, WBC # 11 Tyson Fury; WBC #15 light heavyweight contender Danny “The Big Mac” McIntosh, former Commonwealth welterweight champion John O’Donnell, former British light welterweight title-holder “Lightning” Lenny Daws, former WBC light welterweight king Junior “The Hitter” Witter, WBC International Silver welterweight champ Victor Lupo; unbeaten prospects such as NABA super featherweight champion and WBA #9 Logan Cotton McGuinness, light heavyweight Lionell “Lonnie B” Thompson, super bantamweight Kid Galahad, newly-signed middleweight sensation Chris Eubank, Jr., and welterweight Samuel Vargas.

Go on line at www.HennessySports.com for more information about Asselstine, upcoming Hennessy Sports events or any of his stable-mates.

Terry Martin: Heavy Hands, Giant Heart

Posted on | November 22, 2011 | No Comments

belveder_banner2

He really does look like Mike Tyson. And when he walks into the ring and knocks some poor soul into next week with one punch, it only furthers the resemblance.

But MMA star and fledgling pro boxer Terry Martin is his own man; a remarkable one.

31-year-old Martin (4-0, 4 KOs) will appear on the undercard of Hitz Boxing’s return of the “Thanksgiving Eve Belvedere Bash”, on Wednesday, November 23, at the posh Belvedere Banquet in Elk Grove, Illinois, that will be headlined by former world title challenger Johnny Lewus (25-4-1, 21 KOs) taking on Saint Paul, Minnesota’s Allen “The American Boy” Litzau (13-6, 7 KOs).

A native of the streets of Chicago, Martin was in a gang by the age 10 and was shot five times in a drive-by shooting at the age of 15. It was a wake-up call that led him away from the gangs and into school where he has gone on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master’s Degree, and is working toward a PhD. He also frequently takes his own time to visit schools, churches and community centers to speak to young people about the value of staying in school.

An impressive 22-9 in MMA, hammer-fisted Martin rose to national prominence in 2005 when he first competed in the UFC. He eventually made six appearances in the world’s premier MMA promotion and has also competed for Strikeforce, Affliction and King of the Cage promotions, among others. He continues to compete in MMA, having won a fight by first-round knockout in October of this year.

“Boxing is what my father and grandfather always wanted me to do. They boxed all their lives,” explains Martin of his ring career. Both boxing and MMA have their pros and cons, but right now I think I’m liking boxing a little better than MMA. The training is more focused on one thing. You don’t have to worry about being kicked.”

Martin, who trains at Chicago Boxing Gym under the guidance of well-respected trainer Sam Colonna, says he’s coming to Wednesday’s fight with some noticeable technique improvements.

“Every punch I throw I still try to nail you with it. I’m still trying to knock your head off, but me and Sam are working in the gym on combination punching and staying aggressive. He’s teaching me to keep throwing them. If one misses, three or four will catch you. You’ll see the improvements in that when I fight this time.”

The idea to serve as inspirational speaker and role model came from another fighter, who recalled Martin’s history and recognized how valuable he could be as a mentor to impressionable young people.

“One of my old peers suggested I come up and talk to some students. I didn’t think anything of it, but I guess when I talked to them I had inspired them so much that my friend said ‘man you should do that more.’ I think kids might look up to me a little more because I’m from where they come from. Somebody else telling them what’s right and wrong might not work as well as someone who knows what they know. I’ve been there. I have that street credibility and I would do anything to help a young person out.

So how does he feel about resembling the former champion “Iron Mike”?

“I love Mike Tyson! Everybody’s been telling me I look like him since I was a kid and that’s probably why I’ve done what I’ve done with my life,” he laughs. “Mike Tyson has to get some of the credit.”

Tickets for the “Thanksgiving Eve Belvedere Bash” are $100 Ringside and $35 G/A and are available at fanfueled.com or the HITZ TIX HOTLINE: 630-442-4203. All bouts are subject to change. On fight night, doors open at 6:30 pm and the action starts at 7:30.

The Belvedere Banquet is located at 1170 West Devon in Elk Grove.

Press Release for Kid Shamrock

Posted on | November 22, 2011 | No Comments

 Winner Take All Productions Presents

KID SHAMROCK

November 18, 2011, New York City — The acclaimed Off Broadway production KID SHAMROCK returns with an exclusive run of 10 performances at the TADA Theater from Friday, November 25 to Sunday December 4. The heart-wrenching and inspiring true story of middleweight contender “Irish” Bobby Cassidy will be directed by former WBO heavyweight champion of the world, Michael Bentt.

“KID SHAMROCK rocks, rolls and provides a raw slice of what we think it is to be a fighter,” said Bentt.  “A fighter intuits that after every congratulatory pat on the back, (literal or metaphorical) a shot, or a punch delivered from the blind side awaits. It’s the nature of the game and the nature of life; It takes maniacal and monumental courage to endure and get up every morning, which is why the storytelling in KID SHAMROCK is truly transcending.”

Examining the depths of a fighter’s soul and celebrating the proud tradition of the sweet science, KID SHAMROCK provides a rare glimpse into the mindset of the fighter. And providing that glimpse are fighters themselves. The cast is replete with former boxers, including John Duddy, Seamus McDonagh, Wayne Kelly and Cassidy himself.

“These fighters have shown a tremendous amount of heart inside the ring,” said executive producer David Schuster. “Guess what? They display the same heart and courage on the stage. The fighters, the actors, they lay it on the line every night.”

The cast is anchored by veteran actor Vinny Vella (The Sopranos, Casino), the show-stealing Patrick Joseph Connolly and the explosive Nick Roman.

Each performance provides a message of perseverance and hope. As such, the cast and crew of KID SHAMROCK would like to extend a sincere thank you to Maxim Group LLC for sponsoring an evening in which tickets will be given away exclusively to teenage fighters from boxing gyms in the New York area. We applaud Maxim Group’s desire to expose young men and women to such important life lessons played out on the stage.

Praise for KID SHAMROCK:

“The boxing scenes may well be the best-choreographed fight action ever seen on a New York stage, on or off-Broadway,”  — George Kimball, The Irish Times

“Kid Shamrock packs a punch,” — The Irish Voice

“For boxing, today it’s Off Broadway, tomorrow Broadway!” — New York Daily News

“Poignant … superbly written,” — Brian Doogan, The Ring Magazine.

Washington, DC (November 21)…Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell will take the biggest step of his thus far unconventional professional boxing career on Saturday, Dec. 10 against Timur Ibragimov in the co-featured bout to the “Capital Showdown: Khan vs. Peterson” championship fight taking place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC which will be televised live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing.  Mitchell’s transformation from a standout linebacker at Michigan State University into a professional boxer is the most well-known part of his personal narrative.  However, it is his raw athletic talent, coupled with certain serendipitous events that have led him to a promising career as a heavyweight pugilist.

“I’ve been very competitive throughout my whole life,” Mitchell said.  “I believe that God blesses each and every one of us with a particular gift or talent, and athletics is my gift and my talent.”

Mitchell is the second oldest of five children born to Jeanette Mitchell.  When he was 12 years old, he and his family moved from Virginia Beach, Va., to Brandywine, Md., to live with his grandparents.  Little did he know that moving to Brandywine was the first event in a long line of fortunate occurrences that set Mitchell up for success.

“I don’t know what would have happened to me if I would have stayed in Virginia Beach,” Mitchell said.  “I witnessed a lot of abuse and negativity there.  When we moved to Brandywine, there were 11 of us living in our grandparents’ house, but there was a lot of love there.  If we hadn’t moved, I never would have met the influential people who have helped me get to where I am today.”

While Mitchell was known as “Little Superstar” on the streets of his Virginia Beach neighborhood, he dreamed of becoming a star basketball player, but when he realized he would not grow to be tall enough for basketball greatness, he switched his focus to becoming a football player.  He started as a freshman on the Gwynn Park High School football team.  Eventually, Mitchell became an All-State and an All-American linebacker who was named the 2000 Associated Press Maryland Defensive Player of the Year.  Upon graduation from high school, he received a full scholarship to Michigan State University (MSU) to play football.

During the 2003 season, Mitchell led the Spartans by averaging 10.6 tackles per game and was second on the team in defensive production despite missing the first two games of that year.  He was a preseason All-Big Ten selection going into his junior year, but after an unfortunate series of knee injuries during his three-season tenure on the MSU football team, Mitchell decided to walk away from football.

“I was not at peace with myself at first,” Mitchell said.  “I had to go home, regroup with my mom, the Daniels [Mitchell’s godparents] and my mentor Maurice Banks to figure out what I was going to do next.  I knew that I was going to be all right.  I had my college degree [in Criminal Justice with a specialization in both Homeland Security and Security Management], but I was not ready to walk away from sports completely.”

Perhaps one of the most important moments of Mitchell’s life came when he happened upon the televised pro boxing debut of current Baltimore Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski.  Mitchell immediately knew he had found a way to provide for himself and his then-pregnant wife-to-be. He left Michigan and returned to Maryland where he met his manager Sharif Salim and trainer Andre Hunter, who helped him set out on a heavyweight boxing career.

A quick learning curve rapidly paid off, as Mitchell went 9-1 in his amateur contests, with all of his victories coming via knockout.  He began his professional career in 2008.  After just one professional fight, he signed with Golden Boy Promotions, which he said was the most surprising and rewarding part of his journey thus far.

“I love the sport of boxing,” Mitchell said.  “I want to stay on this path and continue to provide for my family.  Hopefully, that brings financial security along with winning the heavyweight championship.”

He very well could be on his way.  With a record of 23-0-1 (17 KO’s), Mitchell is an American heavyweight on the rise.  A 2010 ESPN.com prospect to watch, he has been anointed as the United States’ best current hope for a heavyweight world champion.

“Seth Mitchell is a special fighter,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.  “He doesn’t have the outside distractions that a lot of athletes have.  He has a supportive wife, a strong team and a competitive edge that can take him far in the sport of boxing.  I think December 10 is going to be a big coming out party for Seth Mitchell, and I can’t wait to see it.”
