This week on Takedown Wrestling Radio
After being on the road for what seems like year’s, (not actually years) the crew returns to the Brute Adidas Studios at Des Moines Sports Station AM 1460 KXNO for the next 3 weeks. We start with a look at some top level athletes working toward the Olympics Trials, One man who has done so much for wrestling and a few who are doing some good things on a local basis.
Scheduled to join Steve Foster, Scott Casber, Chris Arns and company-
Alan Meltzer- Successful Business Man. Alan has done much for several wrestling programs and in particular Mark Cody’s American University Wrestling. AU’s Coach Mark Cody credits Mr. Meltzer as being the inspiration for American University’s improbable rise to wrestling prominence. Cody said, “Alan knows how much effort it took to get the Eagles back off the ground.” “Blind faith took them to even greater heights”. “I just knew how much wrestling had meant to me and the values, the lessons in life that it teaches you,” Alan Meltzer said. “You’re not going to get rich wrestling. You’re not going to go out and sign a contract to be a pro. But you learn lessons every single day in that practice room and in one-on-one competition and you just can’t put a price on something like that.”
Joe Williams- Former Iowa Hawkeye, Asst. Coach at Iowa and NIU and multi time champion returns to the show to talk about life, training for the Olympic trials and working toward the greater good. It’ll be good to catch up with one of the best wrestlers I’ve ever seen.
Sara Mc Mann- 63 kg/138.75 lbs. –Gaffney, S.C. (Sunkist Kids)
Olympic and World silver medalist Sara Mc Mann, U.S. Nationals Champion, and a member of The United States women’s freestyle team joins us to discuss women’s wrestling and the difficult job of earning Olympic berths. The U.S. Team under Coach Steiner recently faced the Ukraine and Japanese teams in a dual-meet event that included the top six finishers from the 2007 World Championships in which Team USA took 2nd.
Tolly Thompson- NCAA champion and Janesville, Iowa, native Tolly Thompson is beginning his 8th overall season as Panther assistant coach. He was promoted during the 2003-04 season on head coach Brad Penrith’s staff. Thompson joined the Panther staff as the team’s Conditioning Specialist in the 2002-03 season. He returned to UNI after two years as the strength and conditioning coach at Nebraska. He was a member of the Panthers’ coaching staff during the 1999-2000 season as a volunteer assistant. Thompson, 35, has a wealth of international experience and was named the winner of the 2005 John Smith Award as the Freestyle Wrestler of the Year by USA Wrestling. Thompson has represented the United States at the World Championships. He took first-place honors at the 2006 U.S. World Team Trials in Sioux City, Iowa.
Join us for this week for a program that will have the flavors of giving and international goals.
