With everyone celebrating New Years Day around the world, some who have lost a loved one to the streets recently will be wondering if they could have made a difference. Could we all make a difference and help us get the word out.
JimmyJamesMMA.com is proud to announce, “Stop the Violence Day” which will be created this year on January 11, 2011 at 599 Canal Street, Lawrence, MA. Will “the Brown bomber” Santiago, a local role model will be hosting this event.
At 1:11pm we will be doing a live webcast from the Canal Street Gym to give the family members a chance to share their stories.
Jose Bugzy Martinez (Canal Street Gym) and Will “the Brown Bomber” Santiago (MMA Fighter) have partnered to get the word out to get kids into the Gym and off the streets.
“Will approached me with this event idea after a recent surge in murders in Lawrence”, Said Jimmy James
Santiago is a role model for kids in the Lawrence area and has recently started his own website called BrownBomberMMA.com which is being used to promote his fight career and also get the “Stop The Violence” message out through a blog style video format.
Santiago got his story about his move from the streets to the cage covered by WMUR and Eagle Tribune. “Off the streets and into the ring”, Lawrence’s Santiago fighting for a better life.
“There are two ways you can go when you’re running on the streets. You wind up in prison or you wind up dead,” said Santiago, who competes as a 185-pound middleweight. “I feel like I got off lucky.”
It is away from the gym, though, and away from work, where Santiago, known as “The Brown Bomber,” accomplishes his most significant work. “All those mistakes I made, I just want to do all I can to correct them. I’m ready to give back to the community,” he said.
Most recently, he has been a featured speaker at the Lawrence Boys Club and will be speaking at Department of Youth Services (DYS) to 13-15 year old kids in Q1 2011.
“It’s far from a ‘scared straight’ kind of talk,” he said. “I speak about life experiences, and I just try to be honest with them about what’s out there and the mistakes I made.” (Jan 15th, 2010)
Will “the Brown bomber” Santiago can be seen in the Octagon next on January 28th at the Combat Zone in Salem, NH.
