He may have been born in Omaha, Nebraska but the head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes will always be an Iowa kid at heart living with the history of Frank Gotch in his backyard.
Raised in Sheldon, Iowa not too far from Humboldt, Brands was not only aware of Gotch, he studied him. Brands told me that he thought “Gotch could have been a contender for Olympic Gold.” Brands himself a World and Olympic Champion (96) would know. He’s been coached by Gable, has practiced with and competed alongside some of the best the world has to offer.
Tom Brands will join Mike Chapman, Tony Ersland, Bruce Reimers, Brad Rheingans, Jim “Baron” Raschke, Bill Smith, Bob Steenlage and others at the Frank Gotch Open House.
Please make a point to be there and join together as we salute the memory of Frank Gotch at the Rustix Restaurant at 716 Sumner Ave, Humboldt, Iowa on Thursday May 19th.
Buy a brick in the sidewalk that will lead to the new 8ft tall statue of 1 of wrestling’s greatest athletes. Frank Gotch.
