MAIN EVENT USBA MIDDLEWEIGHT REIGONAL TITLE BOUT BETWEEN OSSIE DURAN AND LATIF MUNDY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEWARK, NEW JERSEY (June 6, 2011)—Promoter Gabe LaConte is back.
The man who put on some of the most entertaining fights in the 1990’s in New Jersey is teaming up with The Gulfstream Group to present a big night of boxing on Wednesday June 22nd at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, New Jersey
In the main event, Ossie Duran of Accra, Ghana will take on Latif Mundy of Philadelphia in a ten round main event for the USBA Regional Middleweight title.
La Conte started promoting shows in the late 1980’s in Newark.
“Newark was a boxing town”, said La Conte
“I met all of the great champions and that inspired me to get into boxing”
LaConte started working as a trainer, manager and then a promoter.
“I did about ninety shows from West Orange, Atlantic City and Newark. Boxing was flourishing in that region. Marc Roberts had his Triple Threat Company and we put on some great shows”
When asked about this card, LaConte is not only very excited about the event but the future for the fighters on the card.
“First you have Duran and Mundy in what will be a great fight. Duran has a few losses on his mark but he can fight. I look at him as the modern day Cinderella Man” (referring to former Heavyweight champion Jim Braddock who also didn’t have the most amazing record before winning the title)
“He is fighting a tough guy in Mundy. Mundy is from Philadelphia and Philadelphia has the toughest fighters in the world so I expect this to be a great fight”
“The rest of the card is made up of the four and six rounders. These fights are the grass roots fights that help make the stars of tomorrow and I expect some of these guys to be fighting for world championships in the next few years.”
“Not only is the undercard thrilling, but we have three undefeated fighters on the show. These are great competitive fights which in my opinion are a television level card. What we are looking to do these shows and have the fans know that when these fighters are coming to fight at The Robert Treat that they are coming to win”
The rest of the exciting card is as follows:
In a four round Jr. Middleweight bout, Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna (2-0, 2 KO’s) will take on an opponent to be named.
In six round Super Middleweight fight, undefeated Andy Mejias (9-0, 4 KO’s) of Utica, NY will battle Yasin Rashid (7-1, 2 KO’s) of Brooklyn, NY
