San Fernando, CA — On April 21, 2008, boxing unfortunately lost one of its own due to heart failure. Jim Moriarty was not only a great man; he was part of our boxing community. I remember meeting Jim about 20 years ago. He was a man’s man. I was the U.S. Heavyweight Champ at the time. I was in his gym screwing around and before you knew it he whacked me in the leg with a bat. He didn’t care who I was, this was his gym. It was the start of a friendship that was based on respect and our mutual love for boxing. I was fortunate enough to represent BROTHERS BOXING GYM at the end of my amateur career as well as train there as a pro. I was able to see Jim’s generosity toward myself and others. Never did he ask me for a penny and refused when I offered. I saw him do this for a lot of kids who just didn’t have anything. I knew of boxers that were homeless and Jim always opened his door to them. I had my troubles along the way and I could always count on Jim. His guidance and words of wisdom got me back to where I needed to be. There are only a few people that I feel I owe anything to and Jim was one of them. Not only has the boxing community lost a great man, the world has lost a great man. To know Jim, was to love and respect him. He earned it. My prayers are with Jim and his loving family. God Bless Brother………
