DR. PETER GOLDMAN: THE MIRACLE MMA HEALER
Goldman’s Zone Healing practice relieves his patients’ pain in minutes
By: Rich Bergeron
Who ever said there is no such thing as a quick fix has never met Dr. Peter Goldman. As the chiropractor of several well known sports stars—particularly those in the fight game—Goldman has made a name for himself by offering super fast healing sessions that tap into a process called Zone Healing.
“I never really looked at myself as a sports doctor,” Goldman said. “Actually, I do take care of a lot of MMA stars, and that happen kind of inadvertently. I’m the kind of doctor who just loves to help whoever I can, but I’ve always been involved in MMA myself, and because of that I ended up attending to a lot of fighters. Some of them are very high profile. The word kind of got out, and now I get emails and calls from all over the world. I work with people all over the world involved at all levels of the fight game. They come from all over the world to my office to see me, and they get great results from that.”
He maintains it was never his goal to work directly with some of the most famous MMA fighters, but his specialty ended up being just what many of them needed in order to stay in top physical condition. “One of the first big names I worked with was B.J. Penn,” Goldman explained. “Before B.J. I’d taken care of many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts, and I had other BJJ fighters already as my patients, but I hadn’t met too many real MMA stars. B.J. was in his mid 20s when we met, and he was one of the best fighters in the world. He had a lot of problems with his neck, and he was told he had to get neck surgery. At the time, even though he was so young, he was considering retirement. After the first treatment I gave him he was about 70 percent relieved. I saw him a couple of times a day for three straight days, and after that he was 100 percent relieved.”
The doctor no doubt saved Penn’s career, so the fighter never forgot that. “B.J. started to fly me out to his fights a few days beforehand. I’ll work on him every day, and I’ll give him treatment before and after the fight,” explained Goldman. “He loves the results. After the success B.J. had with Zone Healing, which is the type of technique I use, the word got out in the MMA community.”
He eventually had other fighters knocking on his door including Bas Rutten, Eddie Bravo, Rob Kaman, Rigan Machado, John Machado, Renato “Charuto” Verissimo, and Female Boxing Legend Lucia Rijker.
“I actually don’t do anything specific to fighters,” he admitted. “Zone Healing is so specifically powerful. I’ve even been able to help fighters who have already gone to other chiropractors, homeopaths, naturalists, acupuncturists, and etcetera. They’re so not where they want to be in a physical healing sense when they first come in, but after Zone Healing they’re all better.”
He points out that nothing he does is really all that special. It is just a proven, effective method of natural healing. “I look at it like a fuse box. If one of the circuits blew, all the things controlled by that circuit will not work,” he explained. “If you just reset the circuit, everything will work again. There are circuits in the body, too. You have an eliminative circuit, a glandular circuit, a nerve circuit, a digestive circuit, a muscular circuit, and a circulatory circuit. What Zone Healing does is it lets me feel points along the back of the head that relate to the six circuits, and that tells me which circuit is or is not working. When stimulated I can reset these circuits. Once reset the body is in a situation where it is more balanced and more able to heal itself.”
Seeing the faces of his patients light up is what he enjoys most about his work. “I just love seeing people’s faces go from complete frustration and hopelessness to complete relief and happiness when they actually see with their own eyes their healing. When they see that their body is actually healing, they feel so much better,” he said. “I had a woman come in this morning who is not a pro fighter, but she had been diagnosed with MS years ago. Basically, when she started coming to me she could not walk. She used a walker or a wheelchair wherever she went. I’ve been working on her twice a week for a couple of months. I got a call this morning and she said to me, ‘Doctor, I can’t believe it, I’m actually walking.’ So, I told her to come in for a treatment, and she came in with her husband, and they were both thrilled.” He added that is was gratifying to him to actually witness her come into the office without her walker. He maintains he never did anything different with that woman that he might do with a fighter.
“What I do with Zone Healing is not taught in any school in the world,” he explained. “Doctor Fleet was the founder of Zone Healing, and he taught many doctors in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. Some of his original students actually taught me. I would say there’s probably about 100 doctors who know this system, and there’s maybe 30 doctors who use this system combined with other systems. As far as pure Zone doctors go, there’s just a handful, and I’m one of them.”
What truly makes this treatment seem like pure magic is the time it takes for a typical session. “The treatment only takes about one minute. If you are a chiropractor doing Zone Healing, you can easily see about 30 patients in an hour,” he said. “Even though I already have a very successful practice, there’s always room for me to help more people.”
Goldman’s doing so well he even made a point to recommend another Zone Healing doctor who practices the method on the East Coast. Dr. Mike Fitzgerald has an office in
Goldman’s first experience with Zone Healing occurred during his childhood when his parents took him to a chiropractor who was a student of Zone Healing Pioneer Doctor Thurman Fleet. Dr. Goldman graduated from Life Chiropractic School in Marietta, Georgia. In 1994, while at school, he also met a chiropractor who helped him learn the Zone Healing method. “We spent about 100 hours together over a four year period, and he taught me everything I know about Zone Healing,” said Goldman. “He was a direct student of Doctor Fleet.”
Dr. Goldman is not greedy about his skills, and he would someday like to start a Zone Healing school. “I have taught the principles for years, and I’ve actually given a lot of thought to opening my own school,” he said. “I actually have a lot of patients who are medical doctors, homeopaths, energy workers, etc. The only qualifications for my school is that my students would have to have some kind of degree, whether it’s medical, chiropractic, or homeopathic medicine. I’d want them to use what they already know plus what I’m gonna show them. Hopefully that will increase their healing results.”
Other than instituting the school, Goldman’s goal is to completely master the Zone Healing technique and make the whole process quicker than it already is. “I found that for a person to really fully heal, they usually need a series of treatments,” he said. “Even though the session only lasts a minute, they have to come back two or three times a week for a few more times to feel better. Compared to other systems that’s fantastic. But, my ultimate goal is to see a patient only once and have them heal 100 percent. That would be pretty cool. Say if a guy lived in Australia and he could come see me once, and boom, it’s over. It’s probably just going to take me expanding and opening up my own healing consciousness more and more.”
He is extremely proud of the differences he’s made in the lives of many of his patients, but even more so, combining his love for the fight game and being able to help fighters keep on fighting has been an amazing experience for Goldman.
“When I met Rigan Machado, his neck was in such bad shape, not only couldn’t he practice or teach Jiu Jitsu, but he could hardly function, period. At the time we lived about two hours away from each other, and he couldn’t drive himself,” explained Goldman. “He was driven in by his friend once a week for about four or five treatments until he was 100 percent healed. He went on to compete in the Abu Dhabi Championships after that.”
He also helped Bas Rutten overcome asthma he suffered from since he was a child. He explained that after a few Zone Healing sessions, Rutten’s breathing was perfect and he no longer has to use his inhaler. When asked if maybe WBO Champion Shannon Briggs could be helped with his asthma through Zone Healing, Goldman didn’t hesitate to say he knew that he was confident in the possibility of Briggs being helped.
He also mentioned his work with Lucia Rijker. “She’s the best female boxer in the world, and right now she’s looking at different offers to fight,” said Goldman. “If she does fight soon she wants me with her during her training camp and with her before and after the fight.”
Goldman went on to explain why his methods are so useful for fighters of all sizes and stripes. “You gotta figure that a fighter leading up to a fight has a lot of nerves, and they want their body to be 100 percent balanced before the get in the cage or the ring. It’s good to have Zone Healing for a few days and then right before the fight to keep everything balanced and get in the most perfect possible shape they can be in to fight,” he said. “After the fight, it usually depends on how the fight went. Sometimes after a fight it’s a good idea to get balanced again. After B.J. Penn beat Renzo Gracie, I was in the ring celebrating with him, and it was really loud in there. He grabbed me and said, ‘We gotta get in the locker room. I need an adjustment.’ He didn’t have a scratch on him, and he did great, but he got rebalanced. We went and did it right away.”
