POST-FIGHT REPORT

MCC VIII kicked off his past Saturday in Urbandale, Iowa and provided an amazing card of high-caliber fights. Here’s the rundown:
FLYWEIGHT TOURNAMENT FIGHT #1: Matt Cook vs. Jeff Carstens
RD 1
A stand up war, with neither man giving an inch.
RD 2
Started as an extension of round one, with both fighters firing off on each other. Matt Cook gets into the guard of Carstens, and seems to be controlling the ground war until Carstens shows off his Ju-juitsu with an arm bar to finish the fight.
FLYWEIGHT TOURNAMENT FIGHT #2: Will Shutt vs. Josh Atwell
RD 1
The fight began with Shutt catching Atwell with a two or three punch combo that put Atwell to sleep. The knockout came in 12 seconds of round one.
I’m looking forward to seeing both fighters in the future.
FLYWEIGHT TOURNAMENT FIGHT #3: Will Shutt vs. Jeff Carstens (FINAL)
Will Shutt was looking good after his 50 second KO in the first round of the tournament, while Carstens showed wear after his battle with Matt Cook.
RD 1
Will Shutt explodes with pucnches, gets the side mount with Carstens, then mounts with elbows and punches to win the fight by referee stoppage only one minute and two seconds into round one.

FIGHT #4: Charlie Krabbe vs Josh Christenson
RD 1
Josh Christenson gets the win 50 seconds into round one with a KO over Krabbe of the Ames Fight Company
FIGHT #5: Matt Scaggs vs Jesse Lund
RD 1
A ground war pretty much as soon as they squared off, with Scaggs controlling the tempo of the fight and the ground game, pulling off a submission victory 2 minutes and 6 seconds into round one.
FIGHT #6: T. J. O’Brian of Team Revolution vs. Steve Young of Des Moines Mixed Martial Arts Academy
RD 1
Taking the fight on short notice, O’Brian still brought his A game. Young took the fight to the ground, displaying a lot of power and great wrestling skills. Young had one great over the shoulder, Matt Hughes style slam and then worked repeatedly on an arm submission from side mount, throwing a knee or two in for good measure. Good job by O’Brian warding off the strong submission attempts by Young.
RD 2
Starts with another big slam by Young, but he ended up getting caught in a triangle 1 minute and 20 seconds into the second round by O’Brian.
FIGHT #7: Tim Ross vs Troy Cline
RD 1
Overwhelmed by hammer fists and strikes, Tim Ross can’t escape as the referee stops the fight 1 minute and 32 seconds into the contest, with the win going to Troy Cline of Des Moines Mixed Martial Arts Academy.
FIGHT #8: Mark Gearhart vs Ted Worthington
RD 1
An early takedown by Worthington is reversed by Gearhart, who immediatly rains down vicious punches and elbows, but out of nowhere Worthington secures the arm bar to clinch the victory 1 minute 53 seconds into round one.
FIGHT #9: Mike Suttles vs Billy Armstrong
RD 1
Both fighters come out throwing high kicks to begin round one. Suttles gets taken down and eats an elbow and a solid punch before being submitted at 3 minutes and 28 seconds of round one by Rear Naked Choke.
FIGHT #10: John Cornett vs Doug Onstot (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MAIN EVENT)
The crowd was really into this fight, with many of them not liking the champ.
RD 1
The intitial take down goes to Onstot, who moves to side mount, then half guard, throwing punches the whole time. It was like a chess match with Cornett doing a good job at not letting Onstot getting much off. The fight pauses and then ends with an illegal elbow thrown by Cornett to the back of Onstot’s head. The judges ruled the fight a NO CONTEST, but there will be a rematch in July.
