With all the coaching changes over the past few weeks at Wisconsin some of the new recruits took the opportunity to reassess their commitments. One is at this moment in Fargo ready to compete for Team Iowa.  He is Cody Caldwell, the young star from Waverly-Shell Rock.

To say Waverly-Shell Rock two-time state champion Cody Caldwell was torn as to where he wanted to wrestle in college would be an huge and embarrassing understatement.

69-1 over the last 2 HS seasons, Caldwell won his second Class 3A state title at 145 in Des Moines. The young man had a difficult choice to make from all of the offers he had received. .

Originally he committed to Wisconsin but as the coaching staff changed so did his desire to head to Madison.  Caldwell informed Wisconsin head coach Barry Davis that he no longer wanted to be a Badger.

Instead he would go to the other of the 2 final schools, University of Northern Iowa.

Caldwell had eliminated Minnesota and Iowa State, before agonizing over Northern Iowa and Wisconsin.

“I have a great relationship with coach (Doug) Schwab and his staff, and I feel they are going to do great things,” Caldwell said. “I want to be a part of that and along with Krumwiede we can pack the West Gym at UNI.”

Caldwell is the son of Go-Hawk head coach Rick Caldwell and is the second WSR wrestler to commit to UNI. Cody Krumwiede verbally committed to UNI back on Oct. 1 of 2010.

Caldwell is projected to wrestle at either 149 or 157 in college.
