Oakey Looking To Add Glory To Portsmouth

British light middleweight champion Tony Oakey has long been his hometown’s leading sports hero, but he now shares the limelight with the football team that brought the FA Cup back to Portsmouth, England.
Oakey puts his title at risk this Friday, June 13, 2008 at Portsmouth’s Mountbatten Centre on a promotion billed as “Fright Night” against massive punching Commonwealth champion Dean Francis.
If the hard-nosed 32 year old ever needed incentive, there’s no better motivation than Oakey’s being asked to carry in the prestigious FA Cup into battle as he will do so during his ringwalk for the Francis clash this Friday.
Aside from loaning out their cup, Portsmouth Football Club has also generously allowed the Oakey vs. Francis weigh-in to take place at their stadium, Fratton Park.
This will be the first time in the history of British boxing that the Lonsdale Belt and the FA Cup will be in one place together and promoter Frank Maloney is hoping to arrange for some lucky fans to have their picture taken with these two hallowed icons of sport.
Oakey, 25-2-1 (7), hopes to bring Francis’ Commonwealth title to Portsmouth but Francis, 29-3 (23), has vowed to leave the South Coast with the British title belt in hand and leave Oakey sadly crying into the FA Cup.
“There no way my tears are going into that cup,” said Oakey. “Because it will be full of champagne as the city of Portsmouth celebrates another great night.
