Roku
Upper Iowa University’s Carl Broghammer (Manchester, Iowa), a redshirt freshman wrestler, was named the top 197-pound rookie at all levels by the Amateur Wrestling News.  The All-Rookie teams were announced in the May issue of the magazine.  Broghammer was just one of four Division II wrestlers among the publication’s 60 honorees and the only Division II grappler on the first team.

Following the announcement, Coach Heath Grimm said, “This recognition doesn’t surprise me after turning in such an outstanding freshman campaign. You only deserve what you’ve earned, and Carl earned this recognition all season long. His daily work ethic and competitive drive will continue to play a vital role in his pursuit to be the best possible student-athlete he can be.”

Trevor Franklin was the last Peacock to be named to the All-Rookie Team in 2009.  He was named to the 133 Pound All-Rookie Fourth Team.

Broghammer was named the Rookie of the Year in the Northern Sun Conference and All-NSIC second team after completing his first varsity season with the Peacock wrestling program. He capped off a solid first season with a third place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships with a 5-1 record.

The Peacock wrestler posted a 31-11 mark on the season.  Three of his wins at the championships came by decision, while one was by major decision and one by medical forfeit. The 197-pounder became the first freshman All-American within the Upper Iowa wrestling program since 1969 when Craig Campbell earned the honor.

The Peacocks closed the 2010-11 campaign with a fourth place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships.

197 Pounds: Division II warrants a first team member here in Carl Broghammer of Upper Iowa.  Early-season titles at the Loras Open and Midwest Classic, Broghammer finished second at the UNI Open losing 5-3 to Missouri’s Brent Haynes, our No. 1 Rookie at 197 in 2010.  At the DII Nationals, the UIU rookie lost a tight first round match before zipping off five straight consolation matches to finish third.

Behind Broghammer are 20-match winners Zac Bennett (28-13), North Carolina, Pete Capone (20-17), Ohio State, and Caylor Williams (23-17), North Carolina-Greensboro. Bennett was the ACC Champ.
