ST. LOUIS, MO (June 25, 2008) Two weeks ago St. Louis native Deandre “THE BULL” Latimore scored the biggest win of his career as he stopped #1 IBF Junior Middleweight Sechew Powell in the seventh round at the Hard Rock Café in New York City. The bout, broadcast on ESPN2’s Wednesday Night Fights is being called an early contender for upset of the year.
Said Jerry Guiliano, manager of Latimore, “We had a terrific game plan coming into the fight. I knew it was a step up for Deandre, but our camp was very confident we could pull the upset.
We feel that since we beat the IBF #1 we should be given that ranking. Deandre took it right to Powell and should be rewarded. “
About Latimore’s next bout, Guiliano stated, “We’d like to have a big fight in St. Louis . Either Verno Phillips or Cory Spinks would be perfect. Cory’s from St. Louis and it would be a perfect cross town showdown. It would be a great fight with all of St. Louis wanting to see two of their favorite fighters.”
Throwing down the gauntlet, Guiliao said, “The question is will Cory have the guts to fight after Deandre’s stunning upset of Powell? Cory is being promoted by Don King and this fight fits into Don’s “Only in America” theme. With the floods in the Midwest and all the other issues St. Louis faces, a fight like this could really boost moral in the area. If Cory is a good as everyone claims he will step up and take our challenge. “
The 22 year old Latimore, 19-1 (16KO’s) is trained Kenny Adams who has worked with numerous world champions and assistant Jacob Chaves with strength and conditioning coach Ray Franklin rounding out the team.
